Not even the harshest critics — could have imagined Australia finding themselves in such a humiliating situation. After a dreadful week that saw heavy defeats to Zimbabwe national cricket team and Sri Lanka national cricket team, Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign has ended almost as soon as it began.

For the first time since 2009, Australia national cricket team have been eliminated in the group stage. Instead of heading home quietly to regroup, they must now face Oman national cricket team in a match that carries little significance.

Just a week ago, this fixture was seen as a warm-up before the tougher tests expected in the Super Eight stage. Instead, Australia’s tournament has unraveled into a nightmare defined by injuries, questionable selection decisions, and key players struggling for form.

Back home, the T20 World Cup had already been overshadowed by anticipation for the upcoming AFL and NRL seasons. However, Australia’s dramatic collapse has jolted public attention, sparking intense criticism and widespread backlash. Shockingly, matters could deteriorate further if they were to suffer an upset against Oman, who have already endured heavy losses to Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Sri Lanka.

Australia have never lost to an Associate nation in T20 internationals, though Oman did challenge them strongly in their only previous meeting at the 2024 World Cup.

With the next major global T20 event not scheduled until 2028, this match could potentially mark the final international appearances for veterans Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.

Although their hopes of lifting the trophy are gone, Australia remain under considerable pressure to salvage some pride by ending this disappointing campaign on a winning note.

Jatinder Singh captain of Oman feels his team has a prime chance to upset a faltering Australia:

"One hundred percent this is an opportunity,"

"And our boys are looking forward to it. Because T20 is a game of momentum and the moments, and if you play those moments right, you can do anything on that particular day. Australia is not doing well at the moment… it is the best time to crush them,"

"The boys are really positive. They are looking forward to the match against Australia to make their mark."

"Well if I have to sum up [how Oman can improve], it would be if we have the franchise cricket happening in the country or our guys get a chance to play franchise cricket elsewhere,"

"I think we can fill that gap and they can bring vast amount of experience for our national team."

"But if we don't get to play competitive cricket, whereas other teams are getting to play the competitive cricket, we will need to fill that gap. There have been instances where we've been inviting the teams to come and play in Oman. The response has been really delayed, or we don't get any response. So I think if we have the franchise cricket, that would really fill the gap."

Just as I thought. Aussie public are more interested in AFL and NRL than World T20.

I guess Aussies mostly care about ODI WC, Test series, and WTC. They never seemed that interested in Mickey Mouse T20. :inti

Really? Source?

As far as I know, Olympic qualifications haven't been confirmed yet. :inti
Having entered the tournament comfortably ahead of New Zealand in the world rankings that will determine automatic Olympics qualification places at the end of the Cup, Australia’s early elimination may have opened the door for the Black Caps to overtake them.

Based on ranking calculations that the competing teams were still looking into on Wednesday, the Black Caps may now be able to earn Olympics qualification by venturing to the semi-finals or beyond.

I see.

As of now, Aussies are 8 points ahead of the Kiwis. I think Aussies should make it. Kiwis have to win all games if they are to overtake Australia. :inti

Waiting for Oman to get a win here .... that would be funny, but yeah, chances are slim. Australia will not want another upset.

Cricket Australia made Steve Smith travel from Australia to Sri Lanka just to make him serve drinks to players & see them getting knocked out in group stage itself.

They atleast could have give him the match tonight in this in consequencial match. What an insult!

:klopp :kp

Australia built their team for absolute roads which was supposed to paper over cracks in their bowling potency. Unfortunately on these pitches they couldn't do that. They have head, Marsh, Maxwell, Stoinis, Inglis all of them have 100 right in T20 except stoinis may be? They just need two guys to click and tailender with hitting skills can add to that. Didn't work out.

Bro that means this Australian are proper flat track bullies if they don't have a team to counter sri lankan conditions i mean that's a pretty rubbish team if their upcoming talent ia green renshaw that guy looked associate player vs spin in pakistan.

They were winning everything with this strategy albeit in Australian conditions. They had batsmen till 10 and they were okay with a slightly less potent fast bowling bit like ODI England unit in 2019. They just wanted to outbat opposition. But once that didn't happen their half baked bowling couldn't control the opposition.

Told you guys Aussies will vent out their anger at Oman bowlers 😂

I expect they will come hard at next edition of 2028 which is also at their home too

It has been a troubled campaign for Australia, but the former champions ended T20 World Cup on a high, as they beat Oman by nine wickets in Kandy.

Battered by injuries before and during the tournament, Australia missed out on Super Eight slot after losing to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

On Friday, in their final group game, Australia chased down a modest target of 105 in 9.4 overs. Captain Mitchell Marsh led the way, galloping to a half-century in 26 balls and finished with an unbeaten 64 off 33. Australia struck 15 fours and four sixes to race to the finish line.

His opening partner Travis Head fell for 32, off a brilliant caught and bowled by Shakeel Ahmed.

After electing to field, Australia quickly stamped their authority on the game. Xavier Bartlett castled Aamir Kaleem off the first ball of the innings and Oman were pegged to 47/3 in powerplay.

The Asian side wasn't been able to put together a substantial partnership together and was bowled out for 104 in 16.2 overs. Wasim Ali top scored with 32, but none of the other batters were able to go past 20. Six of the batters were out bowled, equalling the record of such dismissals in T20 World Cup history.

Glenn Maxwell, who hasn't had the best of World Cups, snapped his 50th T20I wicket, when he trapped Mohammad Nadeem leg before wicket. He has been Australia's premier all-rounder in the last few years, bringing up the milestone to go with 50+ catches and 2500+ runs in the shortest format.

Oman especially struggled to read Adam Zampa, and the leg-spinner finished with 4/21 in 3.2 overs and was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Zampa rejects idea Australia do not value T20s

Spinner Adam Zampa rejected the narrative Australia do not value T20 cricket as highly as other formats after his side departed the World Cup by thrashing Oman for a consolation nine-wicket win.

Mitchell Marsh's side were already out of the tournament after defeats by Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe but lifted themselves to dismiss Oman for 104 before racing to their target in just 9.4 overs.

Since their exit was confirmed on Tuesday, it has been suggested, external Australia do not value the shortest format as highly as Test or 50-over cricket.

"It is totally false," said Zampa, a white-ball specialist who has never played a Test.

"The time the coaches and staff put into our T20 cricket is probably as much as Test cricket, potentially even more time because T20 cricket and one-day cricket, everyone is a lot tighter in the world. The work is definitely there."

Australia's poor World Cup follows their 4-1 victory over England in the Ashes. They have not lost an Ashes series since 2015. They have won six 50-over World Cups but only one of the 10 men's T20 World Cups.

They lost bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood to injury before this tournament while left-armer Mitchell Starc has also retired from T20s, but their thinking often appeared muddled throughout the group stage here.

"The Australian public struggle with the fact they don't get to see much white-ball cricket played," said 33-year-old Zampa.

"We play three to six games in the summer and do a lot of our work away from Australian time.

"They don't get to see the way we play and prepare for these World Cups.

"It is disappointing it has ended like this but the work and time is as much as the other formats."

This has to be one of the most embarrassing world cup campaign in any world cup ?

Look at the teams they were part of Australia group

Australia ICC ranking 3
Srilanka ICC ranking 8
Zimbabwe ICC ranking 11
Ireland ICC ranking 12
Oman ICC ranking 20

If you can't finish the first 2 spots in this group in this T20 era then you should be embararssing about yourself.
