ICC tournaments and schedules moving forward

This is what I have in mind:

- ODI WC should be played every 4 years on an odd year (as it is). 14 teams with 2 groups of 7 and the top 4 teams per group go into the quarterfinals.

- ODI Champions trophy should be played every 2 years on an odd year (even during the WC years). Straight up knockout with 8 teams so the tournmanent concludes in two weeks max.

- World T20 should be played every 2 years on even years. 14 teams with 2 groups of 7 and the top 4 teams per group go into the quarterfinals (like the ODI WC)

- T20 Champions Trophy should be played every 2 years on even years (so same year as World T20). Straight knockout with 8 teams. Done and dusted in two weeks.

- Asia Cup should be played with 8 Asian teams every 2 years. ODI format. Two groups of 4 teams and the top 2 teams reach the semifinals.

Test Championship should be plyed every 4 years on odd years (2 years before ODI WC). Should also consist of 8 teams in a home and away knockout. If both teams win one game each against each other - then the team with the faster run rate or fewer wickets lost should progress.

Seems like a lot of cricket but I give a lot more preference to tournaments rather than meaningless bilateral series. Plus - minnows also get more regular exposure against the top teams.

T20 WC World Cup Schedule was good as it is, every two years. Don't know what was the need to change the interval to 4 years.

That one change I would like see very soon. It also gave chance for T20 World Cup to be held in all the countries and hopefully in the future there is a proper cycle in which every country gets to hold it.

Starts on Sunday, ends on Sunday.


Before that, 8-10 practice games in 18/19 days prior to WC - if they wish, can give these games T20I status.

India won't play ball with this as it directly competes with IPL. If there's no India, there's no world cup

I think there should be an ICC tournament every year so fans and teams have something to look forward too.

They should have one window of 1-2 months in which all T20 leagues operate. Let them compete with each other and not international cricket. This will create real team loyalty, increase player salaries and allow players to focus on their national teams outside of these two months.

Then we can have a smaller tournament where the champions of each league compete with one another in a round robin tournament.

Sorry we don't need ICC World T20 and CT T20 as well. As such there is a overkill of T20 games world wide. We don't want T20 to become similar to ODI format. One ICC World T20 is more than enough. Players and fans already see too much of T20 cricket all over the world. Even if fans don't watch the players play excessive amount of cricket in that format, so why increase the number? No need for CT T20/Tri-series T20 etc..

I would agree with you buddy but I would rather see T20's played in a somewhat meaningful tournament where all team get to participate rather than bilateral series dominated by England,India and Aus.

The purpose of playing more iCC tournmanets is to reduce the frequency of bilateral series - which I think most fans would agree with.

That sounds like something straight from the BCCI journal on how to even further increase the divide between the IPL and every other league twelve levels below it

Not really. That was pretty much controlled by the BCCI with four IPL teams making the cut and just one from the PSL, for example. These new playoffs will be governed by the ICC.

You are right, but it still failed. Which is why BCCI got out. Whatever version of CL that ICC has to come up with has to be without BCCI/IPL. They would want no part of it.

It can still happen with champions of 8 other *PL's (BBL, PSL, BPL, CPL, SA, Eng, SL and NZ T20). It will involve a lot of $$ investment. But the big question - is the ICC up for this?

-WT20 should be held every 2 years starting from 2020,with 16 teams in 4 groups of 4.

June wouldn't be viable for Australia and New Zealand.

They have pretty much stated that they are not interested and want no part of it. If they did, CL will still be ongoing. So I am sure BCCI/IPL will not be part of this.

But that should not stop ICC from organizing CL. There are 8 other teams or they can do 16 teams by inviting the losing finalist as well. That will make it a full fledged tournament.

These leagues are crucial, PSL is the only time outside of India-Pakistan games and/or ICC events I see the same level of public interest in the sport, you can't say "oh if it dies, it dies".

As for player participation and franchise vs national interest, that should be something for the individual cricket boards to tackle, I don't think shackling the leagues themselves is very helpful.

Its a big govt vs small govt sort of argument, I don't think it should be mandated to have leagues all running in the same time period where you have 8 editions of national Faysal Bank T20s for every nation bar India.

It helps ensure consistent cricket, if you have a player that wants to prepare and get in rhythm for a series, he may want a stint outside the IPL season in another league under different conditions which is fair and viable and often even helpful for his national side if he improves.

It should be down to his board to establish the rules and limitations for when to and when not to play so we get consistent cricket, players get higher pay potential and exposure, and other leagues can remain competitive and afloat.
