Money makes a huge difference

That's right, after 2 decades we are seeing those big boys , tall and strong with old Caribbean flare back in West Indies team, future looks brighter. They already have beaten two fancy sides , Aussies and now England ( almost ) , looking forward to their progress in coming days.

ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2020 Match 9 Mon 20 January, 10:00 Local ( 11:00 AST ) Country Club B Field, Kimberley, South Africa

Australia Under 19s win by 10 wickets

Australia Under 19s - 62/0 7.4/50 ov RR: 8.08
Nigeria Under 19s - 61 30.3/50 ov RR: 2.00

England suffered a 71-run defeat to the West Indies in their first match of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup with Nyeem Young the star of the show in Kimberley, South Africa.

Having been put into bat, West Indies started well with captain Kimani Melius and wicketkeeper Leonardo Julien adding 47 for the first wicket.

Melius rode his luck with several airborne shots, one which was dropped by England skipper George Balderson. The introduction of spinner Hamidullah Qadri saw Melius’s luck run out, caught sharply by Jack Haynes at short cover.

Julien stylishly moved to 40, looking fluent with Kevlon Anderson before strangling a legside ball from Joey Evison to wicketkeeper Jordan Cox.

While England’s seamers all went for over six runs an over, spinners Qadri and Lewis Goldsworthy clamped down on the West Indies’ run rate. Somerset’s Goldsworthy took two excellent wickets with his left-arm spin, conceding just 28 runs, with Kent’s Qadri also picking up two wickets.

The power-hitting of the West Indies’ middle order made the difference, though, with Young smashing 66 from 41, adding 109 with Anderson in just 13 overs to swing the game in his team’s favour

Anderson also showed his ability to clear the boundary, finishing unbeaten on 86 as West Indies set England 268 to win.

England’s openers set a good platform, reaching 53 before Cox – blighted by cramp – reverse-swept the impressive Ashmead Nedd to slip.

Nedd and his fellow spinner Matthew Patrick had similar luck in stifling run-scoring as England’s slow bowlers. Patrick bowled in tandem with Nedd to tie England down when they needed to up the run-rate.

Ben Charlesworth (36), Jack Haynes (27) and Dan Mousley (4) all fell to high catches as they tried to move things on, while Tom Clark looked good for his 38 before missing a sweep to Nedd and departing LBW.

Young took five for 45 with his seamers as England lost seven wickets for 54 runs before rain brought play to an early conclusion to proceedings.

Balderson said: “It’s disappointing to lose, especially having got ourselves in good positions with both bat and ball.

“Our spinners were excellent, with both Hami and Lewis helping us restrict the West Indian batsman. Unfortunately we couldn’t score the runs off their seamers like they did off ours, which led us into some tricky spots with the bat.

“We’re now looking ahead to our match with Australia later this week, where we’ll look to put some of our learnings from this match into practice to give us the best possible chance of success.”

England face Australia on Thursday, knowing a victory is needed to have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition.

What a start to the tournament for the West Indies. Looks like they have another strong group of players this time. They won the World Cup four years ago and look like contenders again. With Hetmyer, Pooran and Hope and hopefully some players from this batch added to the mix, the future looks bright for the Windies.

Australia has recorded a dominant 10 wicket victory over Nigeria in Kimberley, South Africa, to keep its hopes of reaching the Super League stage of the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup alive.

After losing the toss and being put into the field, Australia made early inroads into Nigeria's top order via wickets to each of Bradley Simpson (3-11) and Liam Marshall (1-17) in their respective opening overs.

Two quickly became three as Simpson struck again, before the introduction of in-form leg spinner Tanveer Sangha tore the middle order apart.

Sangha backed up his 4-30 against the West Indies with a brilliant spell of 5-14 from 10 overs here, demonstrating his full array of skills at the Country Club B Field.

The miserly Liam Scott (0-6 from six overs) proved the perfect foil for Sangha, before off-spinner Todd Murphy (1-13) joined the party to skittle Nigeria for 61.

In reply, Sam Fanning and opening game top-scorer Jake Fraser-McGurk were untroubled, chasing down the target without losing a wicket in just 7.4 overs.

Fanning made the most of his inclusion after missing the XI that went down to the West Indies, cruising to 30 from 26 deliveries, while Fraser-McGurk was stylish again in his 23 from 20 balls.

The result lifts Australia to second in Group B behind the West Indies, who remain undefeated after defeating England by 71 runs (DLS method) overnight.

Australia plays England in what shapes as a defining showdown in the race to the Super League quarter finals on Thursday at 7:00pm AEDT. The match will be shown on FOX Sports 506 and streamed on Kayo Sports.

Reigning champions India start with victory at ICC U19 World Cup

Defending champions India got their ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title defence off to a perfect start with an impressive 90-run win over Sri Lanka in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Siddhesh Veer was the standout as his unbeaten 44 off 27 balls helped set a challenging target of 297 for four, before he was one of three Indian bowlers to take two wickets as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 207.

Victory sends India straight to the top of Group A in what they will hope is the start of a successful quest to claim a record-extending fifth ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title.

In Sunday’s other game, two-time champions Pakistan made short work of Scotland as their fast bowlers skittled the opposition for 75 – a target they then chased down inside 12 overs.

India seal big win in style

An impressive all-round display meant India were comfortable victors in their opening Group A match on Sunday, securing a 90-run triumph against Sri Lanka in Bloemfontein.

Half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Priyam Garg and Dhruv Jurel helped India post a commanding 297 for four, before two wickets apiece from Akash Singh, Siddhesh Veer and Ravi Bishnoi proved crucial in dismissing their sub-continent compatriots for 207.

Yashasvi Jaiswal of India bats during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Group A match between India and Sri Lanka at Mangaung Oval on January 19, 2020 in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

India lost the toss and were asked to bat first at the Mangaung Oval, with their openers setting the ideal platform as Jaiswal and Divyansh Saxena (23) combined for a 66-run partnership.

The highly-rated Jaiswal went onto record an impressive 59 off 74 balls, including eight fours, after finding another partner in Tilak Varma (46).

After Jaiswal was caught behind, Varma then teamed up with Garg, to put on 59 runs for the third wicket.

The latter raised his bat for a measured 56 off 72 balls to continue the defending champions’ impressive outing.

India then had Jurel’s undefeated 56 off 48 balls and Veer’s thrilling cameo of 44 off 27 deliveries (six fours, one six) to thank as they ended with a dominant total of 297 following the pair’s 63-run stand.

In the second innings, Sri Lanka needed a good start from their top order and Kamil Mishara (39) and Ravindu Rasantha (49) obliged with an 87-run, second-wicket partnership before Jaiswal (one for 18) made the breakthrough to leave them 106 for two.

Sensing a momentum shift in the game, India pressed on with the ball to take wickets at regular intervals, despite a battling 50 off 59 balls from young Lions captain, Nipun Perera.

Veer (two for 34) along with Kartik Tyagi (one for 27), Singh (two for 29) and Bishnoi (two for 44) picked up six middle and lower-order scalps, along with a run out, for just 94 runs to bowl out their opponents with 4.4 overs to spare.

Player of the match, India’s Veer, said: “I was really happy with my performance, the shots I played came off which helped me with my innings. It was a good start for the team and we are happy.”

Jaydon Seales looks to be a very talented and if and its a big if, he develops as he should, the Windies have a star in the making.

Under 19 World Cup is such a beautiful event, variety of teams as well as fresh faces.

Maybe the ICC should have a T20 version that runs on the odd numbered years as well(2023,2025,etc.). More cricket for everybody and if marketed properly, it would probably run a decent profit.

India qualify for Super League while Bangladesh stay perfect

India have qualified for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Super League Quarter Finals after a stunning ten-wicket victory over Japan in Bloemfontein.

Ravi Bishnoi took four for five as India bowled out the tournament debutants for 41 before chasing down the target to reach the next stage of South Africa 2020 with a game to spare.

Bangladesh are on the cusp of joining the defending champions in the Super League after a comfortable victory over Scotland for their second win of Group C.

Their place in the next stage would be confirmed if Pakistan beat Zimbabwe on Wednesday – a result which would also see Pakistan progress, while New Zealand face Sri Lanka.

Wednesday’s other two fixtures both come in Group D, with UAE and Afghanistan – victorious in the first round of matches – facing off, while hosts South Africa face Canada as both sides look for their first victories of the competition.

India qualify as Japan revel in momentous occasion

Ravi Bishnoi and Kartik Tyagi were the destroyers in chief as India sped to a swift ten-wicket victory over newcomers Japan.

Japan batted first but found one of the favourites too strong an opposition with ball in hand en route to being bowled out for 41.

Big-game expertise proved key in the first innings but the young Japanese side will take some strong learning from the experience.

Bishnoi, with figures of four for five in eight overs, and Tyagi (three for 10) never gave Japan a sniff, with India disciplined from start to finish in their bid for an impressive win in Bloemfontein.

The four-time champions wasted no time in chasing down the target, requiring just 4.5 overs to reach 42 for no loss.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 29 not out from 18 balls, while opening partner, 15-year-old Kumar Kushagra was 13 not out by the time they crossed the winning line.

There was a silver lining to the day, with two birthdays celebrated between the two sides.

Japan's Kento Ota-Dobell turned 17, while Indian player Dhruv Chand Jurel turned 19.

They received cake after the match, and both teams marked the occasion to emphasise the importance of development as well as success in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.

"It was a great experience to get Player of the Match for my performance and taking four wickets," Bishnoi said of his display.

"The whole team has enjoyed today's win, and we have also enjoyed our teammate’s birthday while being able to cut cake with him.”

Hat-trick hero Hassan takes Bangladesh to the brink

Spinner Rakibul Hasan took a stunning hat-trick as Bangladesh moved closer to the knockout stages with a seven-wicket victory over Scotland in Potchefstroom.

The Scots were bowled out for 89 – with Hassan finishing with figures of four for 20 including the scalps of Kess Sajjad, Lyle Robertson and Charlie Peet in successive balls.

Bangladesh reached the target within 17 overs, though Scotland did force a fight back with a sterling bowling performance from seamer Sean Fischer-Keogh (three for 27), before Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s 35 not out steered his side to the line.

This win leaves the Asian nation top of Group C with four points, and a place in the Super League would be theirs as soon as Wednesday should Pakistan beat Zimbabwe in Potchefstroom.

Bangladesh captain Akbar Ali was pleased with his side's clinical display so far in the tournament, having opened the tournament with a nine-wicket win over Zimbabwe on Saturday.

"It feels good to win back to back matches and gives us some confidence heading to our next game against Pakistan. We will try to beat them and look at getting to the next round having finished at the top of the group," said Ali.

Hat-trick hero Hassan added: "I feel very great today with getting the first hat-trick of my career. My teammates were also excited."

‘Every game is a semi-final’ for Junior Proteas ahead of Group D clash against Canada

Tuesday, 21 January 2020

South Africa under-19 assistant coach, Chris van Noordwyk, emphasised the importance of the team’s upcoming matches in pursuit of a place in the ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup super league quarter-finals, starting with the encounter against Canada in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

Following the side’s disappointing seven-wicket defeat in the opening game against Afghanistan, the Junior Proteas will most likely have to secure maximum points in the remaining Group D fixtures to finish in the top two spots.

The SA U19s will end off the group stages with a contest against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday, 25 January at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

Speaking to the media at the pre-match training session, Van Noordwyk pointed out that although the Canadians are an unknown quantity, the team feels suitably prepared for what they’ll come up against after getting over the disappointment from the first match.

“It’s a new game, it’s a new day. We’ve put Afghanistan behind us. We’ve dissected it and we know exactly what we need to do,” Van Noordwyk commented.

“Canada is an unknown quantity to us but we have gone through the footage and they seem to be top-heavy in their batting and we are going to come at them and neutralize that, it’s as simple as that,” he added.

In their opening match of the World Cup, Canada suffered an eight-wicket loss to the UAE despite impressing with the bat and posting 231/8 before the team from the gulf region had Jonathan Figy to thank, who’s unbeaten 102 off 101 balls helped the UAE youngsters chase down the target with 11.2 overs remaining.

“From a bowling point of view, we are going to stick to our KPI’s (Key Performance Index) and make sure we are nice and aggressive against them,” Van Noordwyk continued. “We’ll make sure we compete and that they are going to be very uncomfortable for 50 overs.

“For us, every game is a semi-final but again, we have to look after our processes and make sure our team is in a good space; they’re fresh and their minds are clear.

“And that they work towards what we expect from them; the values and the standards that we have set,” he concluded.

The contest will take place at the JB Marks Oval from 10h00 (SA time), a ground famous for its quick outfield and high-scoring matches. This is something that the SA U19s captain, Bryce Parsons, is relishing.

“It’s really exciting, playing at this ground,” he said. “It is known for being one of the quickest outfields in the country, we don’t have to hit the ball too hard.

“A big outfield with lots of singles and twos, so it’s a high-scoring ground and we need to be aware of that in the field as well. We are extremely excited to play here but the most important thing is to try and get the win tomorrow,” the skipper added.

Windies won the u-19 2016 one as well.. shah_1 talent is not an issue there imo

Quite impressive show by our boys and that too without much of a contribution from arguably the best batsman Tanzid, who was out first ball, otherwise this chase could have ended inside first 10 overs. We are missing one Leg spinner as they decided to retain Rishad for the High Performance program, otherwise this is arguably our best team since 2006 (that team had Shakib, Tamim, Mushi, Mahmood, Arafat Sunny, Imrul .....)

I think, it’s quite an unique situation for both PAK & BD - both would love to win the dead rubber, but then the champion of Group C will take on India in SF (provided both group champs win their respective QF). So far, what I have followed, there are two teams in this tournament - India in one half of the Final and probably 6-7 other teams, anyone of whom can make the other half. Among AFG, BD, PAK, NZL/SRL, SAF & WIN; I believe anyone can win the QF and make it to SF>F, unless they cross path with India. One of ENG/AUS will miss the cut at group stage, the other one will take on India in QF - so, both are missing in my previous list.

Even if Pakistan win tomorrow, we'll be at no.2 in our group as on Friday it's predicted to be very showery and the match will most likely be cancelled but let's see. Forecasts do change

How do you know - it’s based on NRR and PAK can blow ZIM as well!!!! Excluding ZIM, PAK’s NRR is better against SCT, while due to DWL calculations, BD’s win inside 12 overs against ZIM won’t be that decisive when it comes to NRR. I haven’t seen the numbers but my hunch is, if PAK wins by ~150 runs or inside 23-25 overs, I believe their NRR will go above BD.

Talent was the issue, I feel youngsters were more inclined to play others sports like althetics, football, and basketball as cricket wasn't lucarative(for WI) before francise cricket. Money has changed things, Chris Gayle is as popular as Virat in India. This wasn't the case before IPL.

2016 team had Hetymer, Alzarri Joseph
2014 team had Pooran

Before this, the most hyped batting talent since Gayle debut were Sarwan, Samuel and Bravo.

Pakistan's NRR is only a bit higher than BD's.

Even if we win by 150 runs, we'll still not be able to sustain that NRR and our NRR will fall below BD's. I've looked at the numbers
It'll take another 70 all out and for us to chase it inside 10 if we want to go to the top otherwise no chance

Parsons blasts maiden century to guide SA U19s to first win in Group D

Wednesday, 22 January 2020

A superb hundred from the captain, Bryce Parsons, was the catalyst as the South Africa under-19s sealed a convincing 150-run victory over Canada in their second Group D match of the ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

The talented all-rounder dispatched an amazing 15 fours and three sixes on his way to a Youth One-Day International (ODI) career-best score of 121 off 91 balls as the Junior Proteas posted 349/8.

This was before Merrick Brett (2/32), Jack Lees (2/39) and Tiaan van Vuuren (2/24) shared two wickets apiece to help dismiss the North American side for 199 all out with 8.5 overs remaining.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, the SA U19s got off to a positive start. Opener, Jonathan Bird, teamed up with Parsons for a 66-run partnership for the second wicket.

Bird kicked on to bring up his half-century, hitting 54 off 49 balls (7 fours, 2 sixes) before being dismissed, while Parsons went one better and to the elation of the crowd gathered at the JB Marks Oval, to raise his bat for the biggest score of the tournament so far.

The left-hander then combined with Tyrese Karelse for another stand worth 50 runs or more, with the latter going onto notch up his first half-century in Youth ODI cricket, finishing unbeaten on 60 off 51 balls (7 fours) as the home side put on a daunting target.

Canada’s Akhil Kumar took the leading figures of 4/56 with the ball

In their chase, Canada took the expansive approach in their innings to score at more than five runs per over as they were aided by loose deliveries from the South Africans, before crucial inroads from Brett and Lees during the middle period.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Canadians were anchored by Ben Calitz, before his undefeated 62 off 77 balls (6 fours) ended in vain as his side were eventually skittled out under the 200-run mark.

Man of the Match and SA U19s skipper. Parsons said: “We feel really good, it’s nice to get on the board in the tournament. We had a hard week of preparation and its good to see the results starting to show.

“I am just excited that the batting unit has started click,” he added.

South Africa U19s won by 150 runs against Canada U19s at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom

South Africa U19s – 349/8 after 50 overs

Bryce Parsons 121 (91), Tyrese Karelse 60* (51); Akhil Kumar 4-56

Afghanistan and Pakistan qualify for Super League while New Zealand win a thriller

Afghanistan and Pakistan will both compete in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Super League after maintaining their perfect group-stage records in South Africa.

Pakistan’s victory over Zimbabwe means both they and Bangladesh will progress from Group C with a game to spare, while Afghanistan lead the way in Group D after their win over the United Arab Emirates.

South Africa’s victory over Canada means the final group game between the host nation and UAE will see the winner join Afghanistan in the Super League.

The most dramatic game of the day came in Group A however, with New Zealand putting themselves on the cusp of qualification after a six from the penultimate ball helped them defeat the now-eliminated Sri Lanka.

Shafiqullah Ghafari spun Afghanistan to the next stages of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup after their 160-run victory over the United Arab Emirates at the North West University Oval, Potchefstroom.

The leg-spinner, the tournament find who has now picked up 11 wickets from two matches, took a five-wicket haul as UAE were bowled out for 105 chasing Afghanistan's total of 265 for six.

The result means that the winner of South Africa’s match with UAE – who both sit on two points – on Saturday will progress through from Group D to the Super League stages alongside Afghanistan.

Batting first, Ibrahim Zadran (87), Rahmanullah (81) and Ishaq Shirzad (35 not out) anchored the innings for the Afghans as they scrapped their way to a competitive target.

For the UAE, only captain Aryan Lakra (28) and fellow opener Vriitya Aravind (19) were able to show any resistance at the top of the innings before the collapse after they were dismissed.

“The wicket was good for spin bowling, there was a bit of turn. I just kept at it and eventually, I got the rewards,” said Ghafari.

Afghanistan captain Farhan Zakhil concluded, saying: "I would like to thank all the players and staff for ensuring that we manage to qualify through to the next round."

Parsons’ superb century gives hosts first win

Captain Bryce Parsons led from the front as his superb century proved the catalyst for South Africa’s convincing 150-run victory over Canada in Potchefstroom.

The talented all-rounder dispatched 15 fours and three sixes on his way to a Youth One-Day International (ODI) career-best score of 121 off 91 balls as the Junior Proteas posted 349 for eight.

This was before Merrick Brett (two for 32), Jack Lees (two for 39) and Tiaan van Vuuren (two for 24) shared the wickets to help dismiss the North Americans for 199 all out with 8.5 overs remaining.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, the hosts got off to a positive start with opener Jonathan Bird teaming up with Parsons for a 64-run partnership for the second wicket.

Bird kicked on to bring up his half-century, hitting 54 off 49 balls (seven fours and two sixes) before being dismissed, while Parsons went one better and, to the elation of the crowd gathered at the JB Marks Oval, raised his bat for the biggest score of South Africa 2020 so far.

Opening bowler Akhil Kumar took leading figures of four for 56 with the ball.

In their chase, Canada took the expansive approach in their innings to score at more than five runs per over as they were aided by loose deliveries from the South Africans, before crucial inroads from Brett and Lees during the middle period.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Canadians were anchored by Ben Calitz, before his undefeated 62 off 77 balls (6 fours) ended in vain as his side were eventually dismissed just shy of 200.

“We feel really good, it’s nice to get on the board in the tournament. We had a hard week of preparation and its good to see the results starting to show,” said Man of the Match Parsons.

“I am just excited that the batting unit has started click.”

Kiwis leave it very late but prevail over Sri Lanka

New Zealand's Kristian Clarke struck a six off the penultimate ball of the match to help his country to a dramatic three-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Group A.

Clarke arrived at the crease with his side seven down, and after Sri Lanka had taken two wickets in the 49th over, including that of Beckham Wheeler-Greenall, run out for a crucial 80 off 111 balls.

He was followed a ball later by Quinn Sunde, as New Zealand suddenly looked like falling short of their testing 243-run target with 12 needed from the last over, bowled by Dilshan Madushanka.

That equation became from six from two balls when Clarke cleared his head and the ropes to spark huge celebrations from the side in black.

"Being able to take the match into the last over is something we don't really see usually,” said New Zealand captain Jesse Tashkoff. “It was a great game of cricket, and credit to the Sri Lanka boys who really put up a good fight.”

Sri Lanka had earlier posted 242 for nine, after being sent in to bat by New Zealand. Several batsmen got starts, but failed to kick on, and it was Sonal Dinusha's 46 from 52 balls that gave the innings some structure.

That platform allowed Ahan Sanchitha (64 from 48 balls) the license to charge at the back end, which he did to great aplomb, striking nine boundaries in the process.

The leg-spin of 17-year-old Adithya Ashok was again key for the Kiwis, as he returned figures of three for 38.

The chase was set up for New Zealand by opener Rhys Mariu, who compiled a sensible 86 from 106 balls, and staying at the crease until the 38th over.

With him around, the Kiwis looked in control, but they needed to hold their nerve at the last to claim the win, one that takes them within touching distance of the Super League.

Victory over India in their final game would see them progress as winners of Group A, though a loss could see them eliminated should Japan inflict a heavy defeat on Sri Lanka.

Tashkoff added: "India is going to be a great challenge for us. We will enjoy our rest day, and then look through some of the processes that might not have gone right today, and need work ahead of the India game.”

Haris heroics take Pakistan to next round

Pakistan sealed their passage into the next phase of the U19 World Cup after defeating a plucky Zimbabwe side by 38 runs in Potchefstroom.

Man of the Match Mohammad Haris clattered 81 from just 48 balls, featuring four sixes and six boundaries, to help his side notch 294 for nine.

"It was a great game for me. The coach just told me to relax and play my natural game, and that is what I did," Haris said after his swashbuckling knock.

"The coach told me that if I can bat to the end (of the overs), then we will get big runs. That is what I tried to do."

Around Haris, there were good contributions from Fahad Munir (53) and Qasim Akram (54 from 50 balls), and that ensured that the runs kept flowing, despite regular strikes from the Southern Africans.

Dylan Grant returned figures of three for 46, while off-spinner Wesley Madhevere held his own against good players of slow bowling, with a tidy spell of ten overs for 42 runs.

Chasing 295 to stay in the competition, Zimbabwe certainly gave it a good go.

Madhevere, a product of St Charles College in South Africa, showed his prowess with the bat, too, starting the innings positively, with a 55-ball 53. He clubbed one six, and sprayed six other boundaries around the park, to give Zimbabwe hope.

Milton Shumba (58 from 82 balls) and skipper Dion Myers (39 from 50 balls) kept it going, but once they fell, the Zimbabwean spirit started to wilt.

Tahir Hussain finished the tail off with the ball, with figures of three for 42, while Abbas Afridi was more expensive (three for 55), but also helped himself to key wickets in the middle overs.

Don't know about Australian batting depth. If they have any this could turn into a nail biter. At this point advantage England.

Hamidullah Qadri provided the vital breakthroughs. It says he was born in Kandahar. Afghanistan? Damn England is getting players from every other country.

Aus needed 15 Rpo and they were 8 down and still won.

Bookies at play definitely

Australians have an habit of bouncing back from hopeless situations.Australia's population is only 24 million yet this country is very good at sports (cricket, rugby, football, tennis, golf etc).In olympic games ,Australia is usually in top ten countries with highest medals. They have a strong sporting culture and facilities to go with it.

I think, now we have a clearer picture -

Group A: India, New Zealand
Group B: West Indies, Australia
Group C: Bangladesh/Pakistan (Most likely BD winning group)
Group D: Afghanistan, South Africa

QF:
IND-AUS
BD/PAK - SAF
PAK-BD - AFG
WIN-NZL

SF:
IND/AUS - BD/PAK/SAF
WIN/NZL - PAK/BD/AFG

That AUS-IND QF will be a cracker, so should be PAK/BD-AFG.

England suffered an agonising final-ball defeat to Australia in their second match of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, leaving the Young Lions unable to qualify from Group B.

Having been put into bat, England openers Ben Charlesworth and Jordan Cox started well, taking the score to 67 before Cox returned a catch to spinner Todd Murphy to fall for 25.

Tom Clark departed three overs later having been bogged down by the spin attack, bringing Jack Haynes to the crease to add 64 with Charlesworth. Haynes’ wicket – caught at cover after top-edging a sweep – brought on a mini-collapse with England losing two more wickets for five runs, including Charlesworth for an excellent 82.

Joey Evison and Dan Mousley arrested the slide and pushed the score on to 191 before two more wickets fell, putting England on the back foot once again.

But Mousley batted maturely with number nine Kasey Aldridge to keep the scoreboard ticking, rotating the strike well before upping the tempo in the closing overs. The duo added 60 from the final seven overs, with Mousley reaching his 50 with a huge six over midwicket.

Set 253 to win, Australia’s openers came out with an attacking intent. Jake Fraser-McGurk blitzed 11 off five balls before falling LBW to captain George Balderson. Sam Fanning continued the attack with Mackenzie Harvey before the pair settled into a rhythm, keeping the scoring rate at the required five-per-over.

Fanning fell with the score on 70, leaving Harvey and Lachlan Hearne to patiently add 73 more. With 100 needed from the last 20 overs, Australia had a collapse of their own with four wickets falling in five overs.

Hamidullah Qadri bowled Harvey as he attempted to work a sweep through the legside before Lewis Goldsworthy had Oliver Davies caught at short cover 11 balls later. And at the end of the following over, Qadri picked up another, bowling Liam Scott through the gate.

Cox missed a stumping off Qadri’s next over but made up for it three balls later as Hearne came down the wicket to Goldsworthy and missed a wider delivery, allowing Cox time to take the bails off.

Goldsworthy bowled three maidens in his 10 overs, taking two for 24, with Qadri taking two for 35 and seamer Blake Cullen added two late wickets to his tally.

With Australia’s eighth wicket falling for 206 in the 46th over, the game looked to be going England’s way, but some late power hitting from number nine Connor Sully (33 off 20), with support from Todd Murphy (16 off 10), took Australia to victory, knocking off 40 runs in the final three overs.

Balderson said: “It’s obviously very disappointing to lose the match and end our chances of winning the World Cup.

“The two innings were very similar in the way they progressed, with flurries of wickets swinging the match in each team’s favour and then late runs ultimately deciding it.

Credit goes to the Australians, though, who took their chances well at the end, targeting the short boundary.

“We’ve still got four matches to play, against Nigeria on Saturday and then into the Plate competition. We want to win every match we play while representing England, so we’ll look to move on and win the Plate.”

Australia’s Connor Sully steps up to seal incredible victory over England

Connor Sully’s late show brought Australia back from the brink as a two-wicket win over rivals England blasted them into the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Super League.

The dramatic victory, which saw Sully strike three sixes in the 48th over and hit the winning run off the final ball, saw Australia join West Indies in the Super League after progressing from Group B.

The Windies rubber-stamped top spot in the group and maintained their perfect record with a thumping 246-run win over Nigeria in the day’s other clash.

Australia soar into Super League with pulsating England win

When Tanveer Sangha perished to the bowling of Blake Cullen, Australia needed 44 runs from the final four overs with two wickets left. Up step Connor Sully to pull off the seemingly impossible.

The crucial over was the 48th, where Sully slammed three sixes and a four from Cullen’s bowling, the Queensland product single-handedly keeping his side in the contest.

The 19-year-old found an able partner in Todd Murphy (16 not out), scoring 35 runs from 20 balls to seal an improbable triumph.

"We had a few wobbles in the middle, but the guys set it up, and I guess I took the glory at the end," said Sully.

"It was a must-win game. Credit to the England boys, they put up a good fight. To be honest, I didn't think we were going do it. I just said see ball, hit ball.”

In a game that ebbed and flowed and had the feel of a knockout contest, England posted 252 for seven after being asked to bat first at the Diamond Oval.

Ben Charlesworth was again in the runs, his 82 giving England an anchor, but late-innings impetus was provided by Dan Mousley (51 not out) and Kasey Aldridge, who chipped in with 32 not out from 25 balls.

Player of the match Sully had a big say with the ball, too, removing Charlesworth, finishing up with two for 39 in his ten overs.

But the real drama came in the chase, as Australia tottered from 153 for two, to 189 for seven.

Mackenzie Harvey of Australia hits the ball towards the boundary, as Jordan Cox of England looks on during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Group B match between Australia and England at De Beers Diamond Oval on January 23, 2020 in Kimberley, South Africa.

Captain Mackenzie Harvey's 65 looked like it would take Australia home, but his departure was swiftly followed by Lachlan Hearne (45) and the middle-order crumbled under the pressure of English spin before the dramatic finale.

Australia go into the Super League, while England will now compete in the Plate section of the tournament.

West Indies stay perfect with Nigeria victory

Impressive performances with bat and ball helped West Indies end their group stage campaign with a 100 per cent record as they dominated Nigeria in Kimberley.

Half-centuries from Kimani Melius and Matthew Patrick propelled the 2016 champions to 303 for eight before Jayden Seales continued his hot streak with the ball, taking four for 19 to consign Nigeria to 57 all out.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Windies were soon vindicated as captain Melius and Leonardo Julien (18) put on 70 runs for the first wicket.

Melius went on to record his first half-century of the tournament, scoring 65 off 81 balls including nine fours and two sixes.

Although Nigeria pegged their opponents back during the middle overs with crucial wickets from Peter Aho (two for 53) and Sylvester Okpe (two for 66), a 90-run seventh-wicket stand between Joshua James (43) and Patrick carried the West Indies closer to their formidable total

The latter top-scored in the innings with a 70-ball 68 (six fours, two sixes).

The defence of their score was straightforward as debutants Nigeria struggled to make headway with the bat, with Okpe (10) and Abdulrahman Jimoh (17) the only batters to register double-figures.

Fast bowler Seales grabbed four of the five top-order batsmen, with Ashmead Nedd (three for 11) and Patrick (two for 16) also contributing to dismiss the West African side with 28.2 overs to spare.

Aus really shouldn’t have won.

It’ll be harder for Pakistan to win the WC now.

England would have been a much easier semi final opposition

According to the forecast for today there’s a thunderstorm throughout daylight hours. Very very very high probability match is rained out. This means Pak-Afg and Bang-SA quarter finals in addition to Ind-Aus and WI-NZ. The winner of Pak-Afg will go against the winner of Ind-Aus if I’m not mistaken which will be India most likely, so England beating Australia doesn’t affect Pakistan at all. There will be an India-Pak semi final either ways (unless Afg u30s thrash our u19s). The way things are shaping up, It looks like Pak, Ind, Bang, WI will be into the quarters with the semis either being Pak-Ind and Bang-WI or Pak-WI and Ind-Bang. Depends on which quarters they’re matching with which. Neither England nor Australia would have been in the equation.

The youngest team i.e. Afghanistan will win the ICC World Cup because it is packed with talented players.

Lol maybe worry about getting past Afghanistan first before dreaming about the semi-finals.

Also stop gassing. Your team ain’t all that either. You won a game against zim and you’re acting like you just beat India or something. Lol.

It doesn’t mean anything.

Also, iirc you lost the asia cup final even though you bowled out Ind for only 106 :)))

Mental midgets

Mousely batting was fun to watch. England bowling was poor. adri was the stand out bowler. Lot of full tosses. Both teams were down for the count. Late order saved them both teams.

England choked big time oh my god. Misfied. yorkers becoming full tosses. Bouncer became half trackers.

Pakistan need to avoid Afghanistan at all costs. However even if we do come up against them, we should still be able to beat them.

I genuinely can’t remember the last time we beat Afghanistan at the under 19 level.

Our batsman are hopeless against spin. Unless we bowl first and dismiss them for <150 we ain’t winning.

Hopeless against spin according to who?? Also these grounds support pacers more than spin, where Pak > Afg.

India lost because they rested many of their top players for the last 3 games. Priyank garg (current captain), jaiswal, Tilak varma. Even saxena playe donly 2 matches.

Apart from Jaiswal i didn't know much about others. Spent some time learning about who are key players. Surprisingly this Rohail Nazir name popped up. Did he play last under-19 WC as well?

Well I haven’t seen any of this bunch bat but from memory our batting in under 19 Asia cup was dismal. IIRC they were skittled for <80 against Afghanistan during that tournament only a couple of months ago.

The pitches are fairly dry from what I’ve seen and the stats back that up, where 6 of the current top 10 wicket takers are spinners, albeit a small sample size.

Pakistan to Play Afghanistan in the Quarter Final of the Under 19 World Cup on Friday 31st of Jan.

From what I can see this game WILL NOT be televised.

Will be a tough game for the boys and the batsmen will need to figure out a way to deal with Shafiqullah Ghafari.

First time i see akash live in action. Very aggressive mindset which is good. Bad is bowling too short on a flat track even though he extracts a lot of bounce. His yorkers are very good. He has to stick to it.

Would be a shame if the boys don't make it through because of poor weather - specially after pretty much having today's game in the bag.

ICC WC19 group stages were also ruined by poor weather.

Don't even know what to expect at this point. They are aggressive alright. But they are little under pump
