ICC World Cup 2019 - Shouldn't cricket be promoted by including more teams?

Dear all, please accept my greetings.

I am a cricket fan from the Netherlands. I am watching/following cricket since the World Cup 2003 in South Africa. My first match was India vs the Netherlands. Since then I am hooked on cricket and have watched many matches.

I really want cricket to grow and especially I want that the associate nations to atleast be allowed to participate in World events (like the world cup for T20 and 50 over formats).

I do understand that the top 8 test playing nations are on another level. But I kind of think that this is the case with Test Cricket.

I was wondering the following (that's why I opened this thread):

-Do you agree as fans of Test playing nation Pakistan, that for cricket to become popular, the sport needs to be promoted and thus these associates needs to get more chances (not that bogus argument of: yes but they are minnows, who wants to play them etc)

-OK, maybe for Test Cricket the bar is to high. But how about T20 and 50 over cricket. Surely when these associate nations get more chances (this means home and away tours as well), they will improve over time? India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand used to be called 'minnow' as well, weren't they?

-Where does this elitist (Top 8 Test nations) way of thinking come from? Do the players, managers, boards and cricket fans of these nations think they are better then the rest of the world? Do you really think you have some sort of monopoly on the wonderful sport called cricket? We here in the Netherlands, feel like you do

-The world consists of alot of more countries, not just 8. Do you know this?

-I do not see a thread here on PakPassion about the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament which starts tommorow. Why? Are you not interested?

I thank you kindly for reading and replying to this thread. I would have loved it if there were more opportunities for other countries.

Live Cool and think Cool!

De groeten uit Nederland.

Increase of teams in the WC

I think that there should definitely be an increase in teams playing in the WC especially since there are so many associates and more and more countries are starting to play cricket. Discuss!

I've been arguing for this for years and years but you get people crying about the 'quality' of associate nations as though we don't see the top test teams regularly receiving epic phainty whenever they go abroad.

The fact of the matter is the whole system is fixed to ensure that the big teams don't get eliminated early and Pakistan play India for the TV ratings in every tournament. They will never repeat the format from 2007 when India and Pakistan got eliminated at the expense of Bangladesh and Ireland, it's all a joke.

In 50 overs the gulf is too big. The higher variance T20's is where associates should aim to gain a foothold on the international scene.

T20 WC should have a lot more teams. The format is much shorter and several games can be played in a single day.

And let's not forget about the Olympics, if cricket became an Olympic sport it would result in a massive increase in the funding available for nations like China and USA.

Currently the Chinese cricket team gets something like $30,000 a year. That's basically nothing, there's no point even having a Chinese cricket team. If cricket becomes an Olympic sport then there is a good chance of the Chinese government giving them millions of dollars more or less overnight because of the prestige they give to Olympic sports.

Cricket would go from being a quaint, parochial Commonwealth game into a proper global sport.

So why hasn't it happened? The big boards don't care about the sport growing, they just want to line their pockets in the short term. Watch Death of a Gentleman, they ask Giles Clarke about cricket becoming an Olympic sport and what was his response?

"The Olympics takes place during the English season, it's impossible for us to set aside time for it...It's a complete non-starter"

The powers that be literally don't care about the game, they cannot stand to sacrifice a single penny if it means cricket as a whole grows. Never mind that the more popular cricket becomes, the more money they will make in the long term.

Who cares if it clashes with the English summer? It's once every 4 years, just have the test teams send over U-21 or U-23 squads and the diddy nations have no age restrictions. Problem solved but no, that's too sensible.

Meanwhile people try and blame T20 for the death of test cricket, when it's the administrators that are doing it themselves.

Thing is i could genuinely see public interest in T20 games involving wild cards like Afghanistan and Netherlands, even if they play eachother.

A 50 over game though no way. Even i would turn off.

Both T20 and 50 over WC’s should have more teams, especially the T20 WC.ODI WC can have 14 and T20 16-18(without ‘qualifiers’).Teams like Scotland,Netherlands and Nepal can become good teams as they have lots of potential. They can be like Afghanistan and Ireland.

Worth noting that the current ECB chairman Colin Graves has actually been a big advocate for pushing for cricket to be in the Olympics.

on topic I do like more team participate in T20. But for ODI WC max 12

More teams would be good, guess it's just trying to get that balance between quantity and quality.

It definitely should feature more teams.

After all, It is the world cup and there are plenty of associate teams.

Therefore being a global event the associates should be given a chance.

There should be 12 teams minimum. Unfortunately the BCCI lobby wants less.

Cricket is only going downwards and it seems like ICC want to squeeze every bit of revenue out of it as possible.

They dont realize the importance of investment.

Also a major issue is cricket is not in the olympics. If it was, then the money some of the associate teams would get from government would skyrocket. It would also means some countries would have been forced to create facilities for cricket.

But hey, that is cricket for you. No will to spread the game.
