ICC World Cup 2023: Afghanistan (242/3) secures their third victory this World Cup as they defeat Sri-Lanka (241) by 7 wickets

Ibrahim bats well, not explosive but can stay for long - AFGs don't need explosive batting today, needs to play out 50 overs.
 
3 overs in and this looks like a very true surface. 50 runs short my team SL but anything can happen if they successfully build pressure on these mediocre batsmen
 
It helps them when gurbaz gets going but the entire batting lineup doesn't hinge on him.
They can still chase this.
 
Rehmat Shah has better technique than whole of BD top4 5 batsmen. Very underrated batsman.

But I think his weakness is against spin.

Afg have played like a killer team this cup. They deserve to finish 5th
 
If they pull this off that is a sign of maturity. Wonder how much of a role Ajay Jadeja plays in this set up another calm guy.
 
Afghans are approaching this chase same way they did against Pakistan.

Second reason is that teams haven't come out of T20 mind set yet. Short 20 over games doesn't need innings planning, neither there is much stake in building an innings - either boom or bust - try get to 170+, doesn't matter if it results 120 all-out, in any case, you are not winning with 140 on board hence players play with same tempo. Yesterday, IND summed up the wicket very well and all they batted was to reach 250, which would have been enough for any team in this WC, and the innings was build on a very slow RS-KL partnership - I am sure, most teams would have left the game after quick three down, thinking 280 is bare minimum.... no point finishing 50 overs methodically.

Same condition, just another 6-12 metres longer boundary, most of these games would be 450-575 match total affairs. But still will be one sided because of skill and experience gap - that time better teams batting first would score around 300, inferior chasing teams below 150.....

I agree. Both skill and application gap from teams have turned many matches into one sided games. SA has played a remarkably aggressive game while batting first. Apart from that everyone who is dominating has played good cricket with ability to plan and adapt to the given conditions. India mostly rides in the push given by Rohit at the start a template as old as 1992 WC. NZ is doing what NZ does best. Methodically planning and playing common sense circumspect percentage cricket.
 
This is what Pakistan needed to do against Afghanistan i.e. to build dot ball pressure. Instead, everyone tried to go for wickets hence leaked runs. SL bowling well here.

Are the Afghans a bit too defensive and giving the initiative back to SRL? May be after next wicket they can send someone like Rashid or even Mujib to hit some boundaries and break the shackle; might not work but worth trying and not a big deal.
 
Honestly Afghans are impressive. Next world cup if its ever in Asia again they will be a force.

Happy with the way Afghans have played, so far. But still a long way to go, hope the two at the crease continue the good work and nears the target as close as possible.

2027 hosts are South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

2031 hosts are India and Bangladesh.
 
Afghanistan has really learnt the art of rotating strike. They used to be the poster child of just swinging the bat mindlessly and getting out without understanding the match situation

Now their batsmen are showing maturity which is a great sign for their cricket. Hope its not a case like Bangladesh which showed flashes and then reverted back to being terrible

While BD did reach qtrfinals of 2015, the format was way easier than the current one.

Yeah.

BD defeated Scotland, England, and Afghanistan in 2015. They also got 1 point from Australia game because that game got rained out.

They needed 3 wins and 1 draw to go to quarterfinal. 2015 format was much easier.

Irrespective they did well, Pak in 1992 moved to next group similarly, so did England to finals.

Kenya somewhat as well in 2003 reached semis lol

Kenya got benefited because New Zealand refused to play in Kenya. Kenya was awarded 2 points. Without those 2 points, Kenya should've been knocked out in group stage (if I remember correctly).

It is still an uphill task with Rahmatshah back to the pavilion for Afghans. But would be super happy seeing them win this game, nevertheless.
 
Come on Afghans! You got this! 5 runs an over you will chase this with ease. Big overs or two from now till before 40th over, will make it easier.

Nabi, Rashid, Ikram - they all can bat. Mujeeb can slog too.

Can bat is different form what they have done especially Nabi and rashid against big teams.
 
This world cup has settled one thing for sure. Afghanistan can now be considered as Tier-2 team among cricketing nations (Pak, Sri, WI...). They should do regular tours to all test nations. Also should have UAE (as their country can't host) as home now with Pakistan getting back their original home! They can start with LOIs + probably 1 test too and see how they can improve.

With teams like Pakistan, WI, Srilanka declining (Bangladesh never making any progress) it will be a welcome if Afghanistan becomes a competitive cricket nation!

If England lose to Aussies and Pakistan, Netherlands-England game can become a qualifier game for 2025 CT.

Netherlands have 4 points now. England have 2.

It makes me happy seeing Afghanistan doing well. Yes they have some arrogance and can be ultra aggressive, their fans can be hot headed. In football there’s lot more arrogance and bravado shown by fans and players. As long as not disrespectful off the field coming from players themselves, then it’s fine.

It is a big ask - Netherland vs England. But The way England is batting, anything is possible.
 
Afghanistan win this. Theyll have huge chance against Netherlands. If they win that. Omg semi final is very much on.

Based on what I have seen, they are only aggressive with Pakistan. They seem friendly with other teams.

I personally enjoy watching them. They are talented and entertaining to watch.
 
It’s so amazing to see that Afghans are not panicking, they believe in themselves to chase the target.

The mess Saffers made against Pak made me appreciate Afghans even more.
Go afghans chase it.
 
Afghans just dont panic. 5 runs an over is enough. There will be boundaries and overs over 8-9! Keep ticking along
 
Conditions have gotten easier at night. SL needed 280 to defend.

But they haven't tried to stop strike rotation either and build pressure
 
We live in a time where Afghanistan is expected to beat SL, Pakistan (harsh but true), Bangladesh and even challenge out of form top teams like England.

Hopefully in 1-2 years Netherlands join the fray too.
