"I'd like junior players to play against Zimbabwe but we only play 8-9 Tests a year": Azhar Ali

Azhar Ali speaking to the media at end of Day 1 of the 2nd Test:

"When you play in a short 2-match series, you try your best to play one or 2 big innings, so I am satisfied with my performance although after scoring the century, I was looking to convert that into a bigger innings but unfortunately I got out when the new ball was introduced"

"If you take out the last 10 overs so when the new ball came into play, we dominated the day; Whenever there is a big partnership, the bowlers try and induce mistakes by taking the field on one side and bowling outside (the off stump) due to which we probably scored 20 runs less than we should have; We lost 3 wickets in the end but overall the day was ours"

"We need to give credit to Tabish Khan as he set an example for us with his never give up attitude; He has always worked towards representing Pakistan, he worked hard and kept on performing; We need to congratulate him for getting a Pakistan Test cap; It was a very emotional moment for him this morning as he has worked hard for this for a very long time; We are pleased about his debut and are hoping that he will perform well"

"We all hope for each batsmen to score in every innings but we need to support Imran Butt as conditions in Zimbabwe due to 9:30am start are such that ball doesn't come that easily on to the bat; He was unfortunate in his dismissal"

"As a senior player, I would also like to give an opportunity to junior players against a team like Zimbabwe but whatever the opposition, the fact is that we are only playing 8-9 Test matches a year and if dont play same players how will we get a settled team? In 11 years of playing for Pakistan I have only played only 86 Tests or so so average is about 8 matches a year; So you can see how few opportunities a player gets to play Tests, so its not that easy to change teams like that in Tests"

"The second new ball seemed to be coming faster and more bouncier than the first one"

"When you play a Test match after such a long time, then you don't need any further motivation regardless of the opposition; But the problem is that when you perform in such cases, its not considered a great achievement and the same applies if you don't perform; So there can be pressure on you because you have to perform for sure; But as a professional, you need to plan your innings against each and every side; I am happy that this is my first century against Zimbabwe"

Scheduling is a problem wholly of the PCB's own making, they haven't shown any indication that test schedules will be harmonized with the requirements of the team. These desultory 2-match test series will not aid in team development or allow room for squad management.

Wasim Khan and Ehsan Mani made a song and dance about being hindered by the previous administration through these legacy 2-match test series, but have themselves shown no initiative in the negotiation of the FTP going forward. Hypocrites.

He’s absolutely right

Don’t crucify the man for speaking the truth.

Pointless comment made to make himself look good in front of fans. If that was the case then why didn’t you let a Junior bat ahead of you?

I'm not in favor of handing out test caps just for the heck of it. We are already seeing that in ODIs and T20s, esp in the shortest format where just about anyone gets a national cap. I'm not a fan of this trend.

At least in tests I would like to see the best XI being put forward by all teams every time they step out to play.

This excuse of playing 8 tests as a reason to play your strongest team is kinda dumb. We have selected a lot of players who will need replacing in the next year or 2. We know this already and the management should know this. So if we play so few tests why waste a chance to debut you some new players and play players who will decline or need replacing in the next year lol?

I think the management don’t want to risk losing to Zimbabwe and they are clueless when it comes to building a team with good age balance. It’s either too old or too young. And then a couple of players who are in their prime.

Exactly what I was saying the other day. It's not like we have to rest players for a 5 match test series against England. And there's no reason to leave out the test specialists who barely play any cricket as it is.

I don't buy the we can't player younger players as we only play 8 or 9 Tests a year theory.

Yes Pakistan don't play as many Tests as they should, but that shouldn't stop the think-tank giving deserving youngsters a chance.

Exactly, when will they give them a chance? When a Senior has retired, forcing their selection? Still gutted I didn't get to see Mohammad Wasim Junior, do you think he should have been chosen for the test team to test his skill properly?

No one watches Test cricket in Pakistan anymore.

Why should PCB arrange more Test matches? In fact, we should play even less Tests moving forward because it is a product that does not sell in the Pakistani market.

About time fans accept the reality that their opinions and views on the game do not matter. It is what the millions of people want and they want more LOIs, especially T20Is.

Most of the times, players have to debut in tough situations in Test Cricket. Not many Tests are considered to be dead rubbers even if the series is already won. Even if you get to make a debut against a "weak" side, you will have to face a tougher opposition in probably your 2nd or 3rd test anyway.

Haven't really seen many teams except England whose player rotation policy is already under a scanner changing their XIs every few tests. And England are also probably doing it because they play "too much" international cricket per year. Almost the double amount of test cricket than us.

Faf debuted in Aus in 2nd Test against a hostile Australian side
Root debuted in India in the last Test with series on the line.

There are so many examples of players debuting in tough conditions in tests that it is very much a standard.

Its absolutely shameful that even against Zimbabwe we are playing our veterans and not any youngster .

This cycle will continue , God know for how long, failure against good team, centuries against minnows to solidify their position in the team and to balloon up their fake averages.

If we play only 8 test, that leaves youngsters with even fewer opportunities, why deny that.

This comment would make sense if older players like Abid were actual decent and deserved to represent Pakistan at Test level. Plus, Azhar Ali is not going to miss out on some crucial match fitness or will forget how to bat if he rests for a match against Zim and a youngster like Saud gets his debut.

In a current team only babar and azhar have played more than 20/30 tests, our team is already youngster considering experience,

It's a fair point, even if I would like to see some younger players introduced regardless. Someone like Kamran Ghulam, with the form that he was in, should have played against South Africa at home, to make the most of his form and to allow him to continue playing regular cricket.

If Azhar Ali had been rested, I don't think we would have been able to score 300 in the first inning. No way would Abid Ali have been able to singlehandedly drag Pakistan to 300 plus.

I think the PCB needs to prioritise Test cricket more than they are doing.

They need to be looking at playing at least 12 Test matches a year, with at least 6 at home.

That would be near the tally of the big 3 and would be great if it can be around that mark. I think Wasim Khan did mention that they will be looking at more test cricket for next FTP as previous FTP was already decided when he took the charge. Also hopefully more of 3 test match series.

Test cricket at home can still be profitable but they need bigger teams to come back. Bangladesh Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe aren't going to cut it.
England touring Pakistan for tests will be huge and will fill stadiums like yesteryear. Getting Aus and NZ will be a dream but I can see it happening in the next 5 years.

I agree that in tests you should play your best xi but I would say saud is part of the best xi thats the only 1 I'd say

Playing seniors against Zimbabwe is a no win situation different players are scoring runs which will cost the team in the long run.

They will hang around for another 2-3 years at least which will mean more losses outside Asia in SENA as Abid Azhar Fawad and others will struggle again once we play in SENA again.

This is like a domino effect consistent losses and not competing some of the time will lead to less tests offered to us in the future.

To play more tests and become a top team we have to win more outside Asia but the way the team is built and the lack of vision shown by Misbah and co will continue our decline in tests for the next 5 years.

When it comes to test cricket position in the team should be earned anyway regardless to opposition or age. Test cricket is not the format where you have to plan long term its as simple as fielding your strongest team each and every test match to win. Players should be given chances in 50 / 20 over format and than brought into test cricket gradually. the all round players that is obviously some player now a days are specialist LOI players.

He is absolutely right, Pakistan will never be a force in test matches if they only play 8 test matches in a year. We need 4 & 5 test match series. I know the top 3 might not give Pakistan that mant tests but we should try to play longer test series against other teams like Srilanka, NZ, SA, West Indies and even Bangaldesh & ireland.

The only player that should have played and wasn't played was saud shakeel

Flawed argument honestly. Young players should always get chances every now and then so that they are ready when the oldies retire.
