If a bowler like Imran made a good Test captain then why arent we considering that for today's team?

Why do we always assume a batsman or a keeper needs to be the captain?

Mohammad Amir, Junaid Khan or Wahab Riaz are as worthy as anyone else.

Amir can't be made captain for understandable reasons.

The rest of the Test pacers apart from him have no brains so they can't captain anyway.

So batsman it is.

To be honest, apart from Amir, no other fast bowler is a certainty in test matches, let alone captain it. And with Amir still trying to regain his rhythm, I don't think he is ready for it mentally. It should be either Sarfraz or Babar Azam.

None of our pacers are settled in Tests. Nor are they automatic selections. There have been plenty of questions raised regarding the performances of Amir and Wahab whereas Junaid hasn't played a test match in almost 2 years.

Just to clarify I am open to the idea of having a fast bowler as captain but none of the current crop are worthy of the role.

I think it's because the last bowler captain PAK had was Waqar and he was a very poor captain. Anyway, around 2003 or so, most teams discarded the idea that bowlers can be captains. It is not just a Pakistani thing. Jason Holder is probably the sole exception.

How about this...

Imran Khan was an all rounder and not just a pace bowler...

Surely bowlers are the best judge of bowling conditions/strategies etc in the field? A captain doesnt do much with the batsmen when they bat spends the most time on the field.

If Amir is good enough to play in the team, then he can also lead. Why not?

Our best captains have always been bowlers. That being said we don't really have any bowlers who are in a position to be captain just yet.

Amir - still finding his feet back, has a tainted history which may irk some people and is too young to exert any sway over the 'seniors'

Junaid - hardly cemented his place yet, and as per PP superman experts he seems to be chucking so don't want the situation where we have to change a captain because he got banned for throwing.

Wahab - too hit or miss, can have an absolute belter one day and the next day can break the record for most runs hit in an innings. Would have been ideal candidate if his performance was even slightly better.

Sohail - will become unfit and handover captaincy after the third over.

Rahat - Allah na kare

Imran - See Rahat

Yasir - I would have loved for him to be captain, excellent attitude and fighting spirit. Yet he is very mediocre in LOI and I doubt he has any captaincy experience.

We don't have a fast bowler who's cemented his spot. Besides, the workload is too much these days for fast bowlers to play every game.

Cricket is now a batsmen's game... Tell me which team has a bowler as captain , even WI and SRL have are allrounders not bowlers... no team in the world has a bowler as captain now since Pollock and Vettori i guess..

idk why but before the spot fixing crisis, i really wanted them to make Asif the captain.

It's a lot of work. And it's hard to bowl 25 overs in a day and captain. I think that's the main challenge of captaining as a fast bowler. Fast bowlers also miss tests through injury so you need a reliable vice-captain.

Anyhow, it's a moot point since I don't see who it could be. Amir will have that cloud hanging over his head for ever and should not captain. It's unclear how long Wahab can even play test cricket. And Junaid isn't even playing test cricket.

Fair point - even Wasim Akram (who led us to the 1999 WC final) was just an okay-ish captain. Had a very good team at his disposal.

However, India had Anil Kumble at captain during 2007/2008 and Vettori was captain of NZ from 2007-11 so it is not entirely true that teams moved away from having bowlers as captains.

Waqar was appointed captain when he didn't even deserved a place in the team, he was a very insecure man at that time and many ppl pointed out that. Pak will do better under a fast bowler as captain, provided someone has cemented his place in the team, which isn't the case right now.

.

Akram when compared to Inzi/Misbah/Azhar and Afridi was a very good captain, thats a different thing that he wasn't a very honest one.

I would say Inzy was better and Misbah was a better captain in Tests in Asian conditions

Captain lead from front ( Misbah has done this quite well )

Now what has Amir , Wahab or any bowler done recently that be put in that category

Wasim was a very good captain in my opinion. In fact, he was the last decent captain Pakistan had who truly understood the game. That 1999 team of Pakistan did not have a strong enough batting lineup and peaked a bit too early IMO.

Kumble was captain for a very short period of time iirc and it was just a transitional thing and Vettori was barely a test bowler in the years you mentioned. He was making the team primarily to bolster the lower order.

If we go by that, then our next test captain should either be Azhar Ali or Asad Shafiq.

not really , Azhar Ali is a good player for tests.FULL STOP

He has been given numerous chances in ODI to prove his credentials as Captain which he has failed miserably.

Azhar ali is not a leader otherwise he was the best choice
