Mohammad Amir recently said during a TV Show:

"By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in IPL, and if given a chance then why not - I will play in IPL."

This has sparked a fresh debate about whether any IPL franchise would consider picking him if he becomes eligible. Amir, known for his lethal bowling in his prime, has experience in high-pressure T20 leagues worldwide. However, his past controversies and the political tensions between India and Pakistan add layers of complexity to this discussion.

Do you think an IPL team would take the risk and pick Amir?

I feel that the IPL train has left for Amir.

Many newer talents are more likely to find places in IPL squads putting to bed for good that romantic notion of Amir bowling for some IPL franchise.

It all depends on how fit he is. Let’s not forget Amir is a magician with the new ball. One of the most threatening opening pacers of all time. If he can still get 1-2 break throughs with the new ball at this age, he will have many takers.

Worth the hype and can make around 2 Million USD in first year. If not for anything else he can be a great mentor among some young guys about big match temperament.

Skillset wise even at 35, he'd easily be a worthy pick for 2-4 cr INR range in a 10 team league. Like a foreign version of Bhuvi.

However with all the baggage of his name and previous citizenship, I believe he will not be bid on.

Even azhar mahmood got an opportunity with Britain passport for 1 year. But ab mauled him so badly that he was ignored later .Amir may get 1 opportunity with kohlis help but don't think he will be there after.

He's had a stop start career and nobody knows his real age.

No IPL franchise would take a chance.

If PSL and IPL clash in 2026 (and if Amir is picked for both) it would be interesting to see what he chooses...

But I can't imagine any IPL league picking regardless due to political issues

I would pick him for MI. We always have a left arm pacer and he still has good skills and decent head on his shoulder.

He will likely choose the IPL, even if he is on the bench all season.

And even after that, we can expect to see some Pakistani fans pining for him and Imad a week or two ahead of the next WT20.

Issue for Amir iis BCCI has zero tolerance for betting / fixing accused. As Sreesanth found out the hard way. Spent many years in Ranji but never got any IPL team
This guy is an ex-con and a jailbird.

That'd be stooping to another level for the gold standard, that is ipl.

As an aside (I’ve written this in another thread) in my strong opinion no IPL team will even consider Amir unless he gives up Pakistani citizenship. Dual citizenship won’t cut it.

So his choice is opting to be considered for IPL or Pakistan. He can’t do both.

I’ve said ‘be considered’ because there is no guarantee he will be selected in either.

Amir is washed-up, finished at any decent level. I would question the sanity of anyone selecting him in the IPL. It's not happening regardless of how much he wants it.

With the exception of Mohali and Dharmashala perhaps, Amir's magic with the new ball won't work on most Indian pitches,

He might find a job in IPL as a bowling coach few years down the line but as a player, his time is up. He was literally sweating while bowling superover vs USA.

I would say he would go for as much or similar to what Trent Boult goes for.

He will and should pick whoever's paying him most. PSL is just a league. Not same as representing your country.

Shameful to even think that this fixer wants to play ipl. This current generation of Pakistanis have absolutely no self respect whatsoever

There are a lot of washed-up trundlers like Ishant Sharma, Shami, Umesh, Khaleel Ahmed, Arjun Tendulkar, Unadkat, Mustafizur, etc., still playing in the IPL. I don't think Amir would perform worse than them.
But the only issue is getting picked in the final XI, as there are just 4 overseas quota spots, and most teams already have top players in that quota.

2025 Amir is nothing special. He would have been a great addition if this was 2017.

No he won’t. Unless he is a leading wicket taker of BBL or other T20 tournament, there’s zero chance of him getting picked.

He’s all talk. Did nothing of note in the t20 World Cup. Even as a rcb fan I’ll look elsewhere.

Azhar Mahmood?

I mentioned this yesterday, so yes there might still be a chance for Amir to get selected but he'll need to do well in the other T20 tournaments before next year's IPL.

I never liked cricketers who were involved in fixing, but somehow I feel sympathetic towards this Amir.
Unlike others, he was just a kid and literally innocent. He has a great talent and would have reached great heights if that incident hadn't happened... poor guy.

What a shame. So it proves that he did all this dramaybazi of retiring early just to play in league of a nation than insults your nation day in and day out

He was not a kid. He was an adult who faked his age.
No one forced him to do anything. Same tour had many other youngsters and seniors
Great heights? He came back to international cricket after 3 years.

He was secretly playing in pindi clubs, and when his comeback was confirmed he booked a ground for his coach from pindi, moved him from pindi to lahore and than had a falling out with him. And when he played international again, he wanted to play tours of his choice as he sucked in UAE and flat wickets.

Guys like Azhar Mehmood called him a softie

Not sure active Pakistani cricketers can get IPL contracts , let alone retired ones like Aamir

If he doesnt get an IPL contract, watch him spew up a lie that he was contacted by a team but he did not want to play for them as his Pakistan comes first. Or he will make up an injury.

Everyone knows Misbah has a strong dislike for Amir and he used to play in the IPL.

Do you think he should use his contacts in India to block Amir's path towards an IPL contract?

India does NOT select fixers in IPL. Sreesanth despite being a world cup winner was never picked after spot fixing.

Everything else is moot.

if this is true, i will really respect IPL for this.

Lets see what happens in the next draft. I wonder he gets his British nationality before this years auction or next year. Cause you need to be registered in the auction list even if you want to be selected as a replacement later.

Forget the premier cricket league, I am would be surprised a small time league like PSL would even select him.

Maybe during his prime. I would pick Taskin before this guy these days.

Picking Aamir up will send a very wrong message to upcoming cricketers + as it is he is past his sell-by date. Hopefully IPL teams stay away from him.

IPL doesn't give fixers another chance. Our own world cup winning Sreesanth was never picked in IPL again.
Not sure about it. 2 franchise owners were caught involved in betting and their franchises just faced a ban of 2 years. At the end of the day IPL is not real sport but just a commercial golden goose. So if teh franchise insists then he will ahve a chance.

No...it is not
This must be lie then

In 2013, the IPL faced a major scandal involving spot-fixing and betting, leading to the suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years, with key officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra banned from all cricket activ
ities for life.

Meiyappan & Kundra was banned with the allegation of betting in IPL matches which is against the policy and conflict of interest.

Most likely because BCCI has not allowed any fixer players to be part of IPL

But i would like Aamir to play in IPL for a session.
That is the precise reason IPL teams will not pick someone with that kind of history. IPL teams care about there image .

It can happen. Azhar Mahmood played a number of seasons in the IPL aswell for KKR and Kings XI. But based on current climate, I don't think IPL owners will risk the damage to their image that will come with buying a Pakistani player.

Azhar Mahmood wasn't a convicted fixer. Our own world cup winning Sreesanth was never selected in IPL ever again after his ban.

Guess, you are not used to basic standards which other boards have. No fixers means no fixers, we dont spare fixers because they are "talented".
No I really just don't give a damn whether he plays or not. I was simply expressing an opinion. I certainly don't need this lecture from an Indian poster considering the amount of Indian players that have been found guilty of match-fixing over the years. So pipe down and keep the sermons to yourself.

Amir wouldn't fetch a single bidder for multiple reasons-

1. Tainted past. For all the faults of BCCI, you have to admire that they have zero tolerance for even accused ones of fixing. Jadeja, Sreesanth etc were cleared by court yet they never found themselves near national team.

2. Pakistani connection. No team would want to afford a potential backlash from Public. No need to explain this further.

3. Too old, too slow. Dozens of better foreign options available.
