Mohammad Rizwan shared following thoughts in pre-match press conference today:

Motivation from 2017 Champions Trophy triumph as underdogs:

"Even in 2017 when we entered the Champions Trophy, no one was rating PCT as top contenders to win that tournament"

"So If Pakistan wins this tournament too with similar expectations, and after not being rated so high then it will be something really special for me and also will be a great source of motivation."

Need to Improve in certain areas:

"I think we need to improve as a team in certain areas. If you ask me personally then I think we as players need to work on enhancing our game awareness, professionalism and then everything would become fine for us."

Views on the strength of the current squad:

"Pakistan team has accomplished many big achievements in the past"

"Big players from other foreign teams have approached our players too even our local players to get a tip regarding performing well on Pakistan's pitches. So it indicates how good our players are generally."

"So there are a lot of expectations from us. The players from outside are ours (friends) too. They watch our players and also talk to them regarding any help or tips"

Belief and Hard Work Key to success in CT

"I believe in one thing that if on any day our hard work, our bravery, our smartness is better than the other team then we can win any match easily. So this way Allah will grant us victory, Otherwise, Allah is their lord too and whichever team exhibits above traits then they will emerge victorious."

Approach for CT 2025 as captain compared to approach as player in previous ICC tournaments:

"I won't try to do something drastically different as captain. If you have observed our performances in the last few ICC events, we have gone to the final & semi-finals but have lost those matches with barest of margins. So we would try to cover those areas and get over the past mistakes which are keeping us from getting over the line and we are open to suggestions from anybody in this pursuit."

Team Dynamics and Learning from Recent Defeat Against New Zealand:

"Alhamdulillah, Everyone in the team is getting along well as a group and enjoying their stuff."

"We really have learnt many things from our recent defeats against New Zealand and we shall try to work on our weaknesses but in a big match, like tomorrow, only that team emerges victorious who performs better on the given day"
"
"Our weaknesses are visible and not beyond us and we shall definitely work over them"

Calling Babar as "King", it's impact on his performances and how CT triumph could cement his legacy as 'King'

"I don't follow social media much but everyone in the team like Hassan Ali call Babar Azam as "king". So I also call him the same."

"Trust me it is not only Babar or me but everyone in the team wants to win this tournament for our country and as you said this achievement may cement his (Babar Azam's) tag as king too.

"The thing that is in our hands is hard work and we are trying our best to achieve triumph in this tournament with our hard work"

"People from Pakistan are generally hard working so we are clinging to this aspect of our culture too and will leave the rest on the will of Almighty God. We ask Allah for the result Inshallah and will also do what is required for it in our quest for success"

What???

You are rated as favourites at home having beaten Australia and SA away?

What kind of chawwal statement is this?

Dramay baaz at it again.

Someone posted this a while back for him. Acting resemblance is uncanny.

Yes and no, Yes as in no one actually believed Pakistan was the strongest or favourites for CT even before saim's injury.

No as in rizzu made this statement because he lost to NZ at his own den twice. Had he not lost those games he would have said something like "We beat Australia and SA in their own home ground hence by Allah's will i am confident that Pakistan will win champions trophy as we are favourites to win"

^^ This has been the story of every Pakistani captain that has gone into a tournament in red hot form be it 1999, or 2011 or 2025 ct.

YK was the only captain who made the favourites claim and actually won the tournament and neither Imran nor sarfi stated they were favourites due to Pakistan ranking no during sarfi's era and imran just never bothered to make a comment due to absence of social media.

The sane conclusion without any bias is that New Zealand and India are most favorites followed by Pakistan.

That's what most experts have predicted. Good thing is both the teams are in our group. If we beat New Zealand we can then be termed as favourites. Until then it's good to see kaptana be a bit realistic and down to earth. Big game coming up for us

You're giving too much credit to YK. We were good in T20s back then as we marginally lost the first t20 WC tournament. Shoaib Malik led that side and 90% of it was the same under YK.

Wasn't PCT fans doing Bhangra after Beating Second string Australia and South Africa?

Now where is the Josh?

:kp

Josh from fans is there bro, we are going to murk India on Feb 23. The captain is more realistic though :kp

I'm not giving yk any credit. I'm saying he claimed Pakistan were favourites and win the tournament. He's the only who made a claim and managed to uphold it.

Compare that to afridi(2011), Hafeez(t20), Babar(2021,2022 and 2023 lol) and our past 90's captains, they all failed.

Pakistan is top contender to win.

The chellenge I can see from NZ.

Rest are not on that level. India will struggle.

Tommorow match will be decide the fate of pakistan in the champion trophy.

If they win Semi-final birth is 100% secure otherwise pack the begs

:kp
If Pakistan win then India better pack their bags too, there is no way New Zealand are just going to turn up and job to India

Tbh if Pakistan win this tournament then it would be a bigger upset than Mohammad Ali beating George Foreman

Babar Azam: A lot has changed since we won the Champions Trophy – but our belief is the same

Babar Azam was a precocious and promising 22-year-old when he helped Pakistan win the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy in 2017.

Almost eight years on, he has developed into one of the world’s best batters across all formats and has his sights set on helping his country repeat the feat.

The 2017 competition helped Babar announce himself on the international scene. A typically busy 46 from 52 balls in the final against India helped Pakistan on their way to a 180-run win at The Oval which remains etched in the national cricketing consciousness.

But the elegant right-hander refuses to live in the past and wants to make more memories in front of the adoring Pakistani public in the coming weeks.

“I am very excited,” he said. “We are going to have an ICC tournament in Pakistan after a very long time. As a player, I am very excited, and all the fans are excited.

“My primary memories of the 2017 final are Fakhar Zaman's innings (of 114), the spell of Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali's spell and the winning moment.

“For me, it was a new journey as I was a young player. Playing against India, that excitement and the nervousness was there but when we won, we enjoyed and celebrated.

“A lot has changed since the Champions Trophy was held in 2017. We have new players coming, we only have three or four players who were part of that winning team. But the belief, confidence and execution is the same.”

Pakistan kick-off the tournament against New Zealand in Karachi on Wednesday, a clash which will include two of biggest names in the competition, with Babar set to go head-to-head with Kiwi star Kane Williamson.

Joe Root, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli are part of the respective England, Australia and India squads but Babar stands in a league of his own in ODI cricket, heading into this competition as the world’s top ranked batter in the 50-over format.

“When you have responsibility as a senior player in any team and the team relies on you and has belief in you, then I take it in a positive way,” he said.

“I try to give my best in every match. I try to perform so that Pakistan win and I enjoy my cricket.”

His form will be crucial if Pakistan are to improve on their recent tournament record. They have been knocked out in the group stage at the last two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups and suffered the same fate at last year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after losing to co-hosts USA.

“There is no pressure of anything,” Babar said.

“What has happened in the past is beyond us. We have discussed mistakes we have made and we have worked on them. So we will try not to do what we have done in the past.”

Home advantage could be key if Pakistan are to experience a change in fortunes. Babar’s home city of Lahore is among the three Pakistani cities hosting matches and he believes local knowledge will help his side thrive.

“When you play at home you get that edge as you know the conditions,” he said.

“You have a knowledge of how the pitch will behave, both in the first and second (innings), but still you have to play good cricket because all other teams are among the best.

“It means a lot to be hosting the competition. The hospitality here in Pakistan is great and people love cricket here.

“Cricket puts everyone in one place. It unites everyone and the whole of Pakistan is busy praying that Pakistan wins. Everyone is united in that.”

May be a pep talk from 804 to instill Jazba in team or a AI video of IK to turn the Boyz into men, its a shame Pakistan cricket greatest player is behind bars during this mega event

This statement reminds me of Inzamam from the 2007 World Cup. If Rizwan is out doing tableegh and we lose this CT, he should be removed as captain.

Pakistani fans are strange.

They know they are favorites to win yet downplaying because they dont want to end up with wooden spoon.

Nahi ab rakho issey kaptaan.

You guys cried the most for him to be made captain. Ab poori tassali kar lo. And don’t bother with suggestions of who should be captain after that.
