"If we're losing after scoring 300, it means we need an x-factor in our bowling" : Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah-ul-Haq presser after announcing the ODI squad:

"We have developed a system where all coaches need to submit a report to me about all top performers which includes feedback on those players as well"

"Some coaches send me daily reports but mostly at end of the 4-day game, where I get feedback on performance, attitude and fitness of every player on a form"

"If I have to ask about a particular player then I phone and ask them directly also"

"We will try to get daily feedback on each player to understand who stands where, so as to avoid situation where four games go by or we wait for end of season for this as we should be aware of the conditions of players"

"Ahmed Shehzad's performance in T20s in PSL is excellent and Umar Akmal has good performances in all formats"

"We are working with them to make them fit for the longer versions of the game; We have given them a plan and a time period also"

"Obviously when we asked them to come to the camp, they were in our planning for T20s, he will stay with us in the camp and they will get a chance in T20s"

"Our openers in are all performing well, In One-Days we have Abid Ali, Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman who are all performing well, so we will see how this goes gradually"

"As far as Mohammad Hafeez is concerned, he has a NOC and he is playing in CPL, we will consider him later - no one is out of our plans"

"There is no doubt that Fakhar Zaman's performance has come down but even after that his ODI average is around 45; In the last few series his performance hasnt been up to par but still he is an impact player and is someone who, if he plays 10 overs, increases the chances of winning the game"

"So we will try and work on Fakhar's problems and instead of wasting him as a player, we need to see how we can utilize him in a better way as such players for you are match winners"

"From what I have seen in the camp at the way he is batting, I hope that he will give good performances"

"Abid Ali was dropped for the World Cup but we have brought him back as his performances in domestic and 100 in ODI series were good; Also he has worked hard on his fitness, and we will all see that in action"

"We have just 3 ODI games and then next ones are sometime after that, so we have kept a lot of batsmen in the camp so that we give them chances where possible"

"Mohammad Nawaz is a capable batsman, he has also done well in limited overs and 4-days"

"We always have an issue with filling the position of bowling and batting all-rounders at the number 7 position so that is one position, whether a spinning or fast-bowling all-rounder, where apart from Imad Wasim we have someone who can fill that slot"

"So looking ahead, we have thought that we can develop Nawaz for the future so that we have a good back-up"

"Future planning should always be there but Pakistan team is not a laboratory"

"We cant invite people to the side based on a few performances, obviously anyone who joins the side has had to have good performances and I feel that the people we have chosen are those who have performed well"

"We have some youngsters in mind, some are in the camp and some are playing cricket at the moment, but just because they perform doesnt mean that they will play against SL, if they are good they can also second XI games"

"My vision is clear, and that is to only include players in national side when they are ready and they conform to the team's needs"

"It shouldnt be the case that we are experimenting in international cricket to check how some cricketers cope"

"Hasan Ali's confidence has been low as for the past year or so, his performances havent been that good"

"But he is putting in a lot of effort in 4-days also, and with Waqar Younis here, he will work with Hasan to sort out out some of the issues with his bowling"

"If it was about friendship with Hafeez then we should have seen the effects of that now; We have to be professional about this and plan things properly; Hafeez is still playing cricket but we had a chance to give an opportunity to one or 2 guys who were not getting a chance, to utilize them"

"Hafeez and Malik are both there and we have to go to Australia and a few T20s are also coming up so before World Cup we have many chances so after looking at everything we need to make a balanced side for the World Cup"

"Whoever we feel is most effective for Pakistan side, we will bring him in"

"You cannot write off Hafeez and/or Malik as in the past few T20 games they have had good performances"

"As far as blaming our batting [for bad performances] is concerned, then you need to consider how many times in South Africa or England have we scored 300+"

"We need to improve our bowling and fielding; We have been losing after scoring 300+, but I remember that even when I was playing, Pakistan would score 230 or so and still win games"

"This was because our strength was bowling; If we're losing after scoring 300, it means we need an x-factor in our bowling"

"All our players are playing around SR of 90, with averages around 50, what more can we expect from them - even if we compare with other similar top-class players "

"Yes, our lower order needs more firepower, we need to develop that and we will work on that"

"The impact that can be made in the 8,9,10 position is something we need to work on in LOIs"

"Rizwan's batting in the past few series has been very good where he scored 2 100s against Australia, he usually plays in ODIs at the number 4 position, his role and Sarfaraz's are different and both can play in the same XI"

"Also he is a backup for the wicket-keeper if God Forbid some injury happens, and fitness wise he is in top one or 2"

"Iftikhar has a 50 run average and has been a top performer in all formats. He also serves as your 5th bowler, he can bowl anywhere in the innings, he can bowl 10 overs. He has done well in fitness tests. He's a mature player with performances, he's a three-dimensional player, he can field well and bowl and bat. If there is a batsman with a good record in the longer format and also has a good limited-overs format, it means he has both things. 91 SR, 51 avg, he knows how to play in different situations. He couldn't come into the team before as Hafeez and Malik were there but he provides a middle order batting and off spin option"

"Junaid Khan wasn't part of the team, let's see how he performs. If we feel he's in good form, he can be included. The doors are open"

"It's very unfortunate for us that all the cricket Hasnain has played has been 4 over cricket. Even now he was in CPL, he hasn't bowled much in the longer version. Waqar bhai was working with him to make him stay in the field for 3.5 hours and bowl 10 overs and we'll try to ready him for the series. We'll see how we can use him. Ideally we'll try to play him"

"Let's give Sarfaraz a chance, hopefully all the work he has done on his batting and fitness pays off. I don't think he gave enough chances to prove himself as a batsman which is his biggest mistake. If you bat in 3 matches out of 10 then you're only giving yourself a 30% chance to perform. If he gives himself a 100% chance, he is the type of player who will perform. I will try to make him not underestimate himself as a batsman"

"Malik and Hafeez have good performances in T20. We will look at the different options for the T20 squad"

"In all-rounders, we have Aamer Yamin, Faheem Ashraf and Amad Butt. These are 3 players who can be developed. In back to back series, it's difficult for us to fit them in the team. We are working on Faheem's batting, he has played some good innings but doesn't have consistency in his batting. My concept of an all-rounder is one who makes his spot in the team on the basis of one aspect. He should make the team on his batting or bowling and the other facet is an extra advantage. Wahab Riaz has this advantage, he can come into the team as a bowler and he can make 15-20 runs in crucial situations. So these players will need to be better in at least any one department. We are working on them and let's see what happens"

Good insights into all the players - and a clear blind spot for Hafeez and Malik for whom it should have been curtains.

Really like his point about Sarfaraz having confidence in his own batting. It will help his captaincy too.

I also think he is right about players like Imam, Fakhar, Babar having high averages and good SRs. Pakistanis tend to overlook numbers with qualitative judgments but numbers have value.

Also right about bowling - impactless especially in the first 20 overs.

Overall though, with Misbah, I am pessimistic about a change in team's fortunes. More pessimistic because Misbah used to mentally lose a series in Australia and SA before setting foot on the ground - and Australia series is his first overseas assignment.

Appreciate the detailed responses from Misbah.

Thank you ! Been saying this for years.

Hafeez’s ODI career is over it seems

He kept on talking about Malik and Hafeez T20 stats

Well it could also mean that it was a 350 pitch in which case 350 would be a very chase-able score.

One of the annoying things about Misbah's captaincy in ODIs was when he was insistent that "with our bowling we only need 250" when every other team was moving into the 300+ era.

He should also be talking about how we can chase which we often struggle with, even low totals. This is an area, we need a vast improvement in.

which is why iftikhar ahmed is going to be the next experiment, and lets hope he proves hismelf this time.

Finally, someone is thinking about our bowling.

Misbah was a shrewd captain who knew how to get opposition out, or at least limit their scoring.

We need that back.

But where is that x factor?
Who is that x factor?

The x-factor bowlers only seem to want to play in T20s.

Waqar working with the bowlers now is a start. A good start. Too much of Azhar Mahmood's T20 coaching/mediocrity has ruined our bowling.

Hasnain, Shaheen, Abbas, Amir, and probably one or two new names, working with Waqar, can be that X Factor.

Of course, need a spinner as well.

I totally disagree about all-rounders.

To me, the requirement is that they be half a batsman and half a bowler. So they add balance to the team, especially if you have two - like Shadab and Faheem in Tests outside Asia.

And having the extra bowler keeps the specialists fresh.

Anything above “half the level of a specialist” in batting or bowling is a bonus.

X factor is good but more importantly our bowlers have to use their brains. Can't have them bowling inconsistently and expect them to defend a par target. Hopefully Waqar can work with the fast bowlers and give them confidence so they can back themselves and stick to plans. Also need to make sure our fielders hold onto the catches. We dropped way too much in the world cup and that could have made a huge difference

Misbah enjoyed the services of a pre 15 degree Ajmal, Hafeez, an in form Junaid, Irfan to the fullest. Otherwise he would be conceeding 300 plus runs everytime as well.

So its ok to lose games after scoring 300+?

Sounds like an over-generalization to me without considering pitch conditions. He even mentioned that Pak used to win games with a score of 230 in his day. Yeah, but Pak was horrible in your day Misbah, and that's why we fell to no. 8.

In ODIs, Pakistan played like minnows in the UAE after scoring 220-230 in spite of having Ajmal, Hafeez and Afridi.

We literally lost to everyone except Sri Lanka, so I am not sure what Misbah is talking about. Lazy analysis as stated above.

in other words he says if we are losing matches after scoring 300 then we definitely needs chuckers.

How many series he won with that approach even in UAE??

Fahim is not even half of a bat and nor is shadab?? Ammad Butt can be one of them.

I cannot see X factor compared to past of Waqar, Wasim, Imran, Shoaib, Ajmal.

Currently only Shadab and Babar come close to previous generations. Very disappointing that Amir has retired from tests.

Its worrying that after years of X factor now there is none especially bowlers
