If you could make one law change to T20 cricket, what would it be?

T20 cricket is the modern format and has a huge following, however the format still has flaws. Batsmen have an advantage with small boundaries such as Sharjah, bowlers need more support.

Shane Warne recently suggested the following changes:

I would improve T/20 cricket by

1 Boundaries as big as poss at each venue & on small grounds keep grass on the outfield long
2 Bowlers a max of 5 overs not four
3 Pitch must = day 4 test match pitch & not be a flat rd
As we all want a contest between bat & ball not just 6’s
— Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) October 2, 2020

If you had only one possible change, what would it be? I think a change to benefit bowlers would be ideal.

I'd make sure 70+ meter long boundary all part of the ground..

Minimum size boundaries and not the ridiculous 50 or 60 metre boundaries some grounds have.

Nothing.

T20's main point is entertainment. It's not meant for the purists like us. Why turn it into something else?

1. how about allowing some form of legalized ball tampering. not sure how it could be controlled/managed, simple things like allowing throwing ball to ground for throws to keeper.
2. 3 bouncers instead of 2?
3. allowing one bowler to bowl 5 over spell?

same as for any form of cricket, leg byes shouldn't count as runs.

I’d just allow at least one batsman to bat twice in an innings. Teams wouldn’t be required to nominate him/her before the start of the innings since different scenarios require different batters.

Having four bowlers allocated 5 overs each is very interesting.

It improves the quality of bowling but also allows an extra batsman to be shoehorned in.

I quite like that idea as the quality should improve all around in the case.

Let bowlers bowl 5 overs.

Anything else is silly because T20 is meant for entertainment and while you want to even the contest between bat and bowl, you don't want scores of 130/140 to become norm.

May be only change I’ll do is to make 9 men team, but 5 bowlers. 20 overs are too little to accommodate 6 batsmen, therefore 4 specialist bat is enough. Also with 9 men field, gaps will be much more means batsmen’s average stay will be higher. That’ll also ensure that T20 is established as a different ball game that uses gears & rules of cricket - something like beach soccer, footsal or roller hockey.

At current state, I think it’s fine but boundaries should be smaller - Max 60 metres, may be a free hit for wides as well, a mat on half volley length can be posted - bowlers have to drop it in that zone so that batsmen can hit through the line; six men inside the circle for entire duration, bonus runs for innovative shots - like switch hit, French cut, reverse scoop. One batsman of choice by the batting side gets one extra life - innovations can be endless.

From engagement point of view - May be extra squad members can join cheer leaders in dance show during mid break ..... T20 is to sell entertainment in abundance - the cheaper the beater.

No ridiculously small boundaries. To constitute a legal T20 game there should be a minimum boundary length of X meters (ideally around 70).

How about more use of technology and just have a referee in the middle to convey the "third umpire" decisions. Don't know why we need two people in the middle.

Ban any cricket ground that is unable to provide less than 80 meters boundary in all directions.

This will separate boys from men.

Growing taller grass in smaller grounds won’t do. Mis-hits should be caught and not land outside the boundary for a six. This is ridiculously shameful !!

And if the boundary line is less than 80 meters but they still want to play an international game in it then the bat’s edge size must not be more than 20 mm and spine height must not be more than 45 mm.

Again, this will separate skillful artists from Unorthodox tullaaz.

Minimum 70 meter boundary on all sides.

Strict restrictions on bat sizes.

Over the years, nothing has changed in the shape, size, weight and specs of the ball, but cricket bats are allowed to evolve into tree trunks - and in my opinion, this is THE MAJOR cause of this tasteless imbalance in the game.

Even after the recent clamp on the bat size, (40 mm edge and 60 mm spine) it still is hugely unfair to the bowlers.

If you want to keep bat size that way? Fine then, allow a fair bit of ball tampering. Let them use their nails (if not sandpaper) to roughen up one side and use sweat/saliva (if not Vaseline) on the other side to shine it up. And then we will see whose bat talks?

T20 is about fun and excitement. T20 is the way to attract more viewers to cricket. I wouldn't mess around with the current rules too much. But I think the bouandires should be long as you can't have miss hits going for 6 on 60m grounds!

India captain Virat Kohli on Wednesday said he wouldn’t mind having an option of reviewing contentious wide deliveries and waist-high full tosses in T20 cricket, more so in high-profile tournaments like the Indian Premier League.

Hosting a star-studded ‘Puma India Instagram live chat show’, Kohli, who leads Royal Challengers Bangalore in the lucrative league, said they have “discussed it internally” as “these things can make a massive difference“.

“I am going to speak as a captain. As a captain, I would like to have the ability to review a wide, which could be a wrong call, or a waist-high full-toss, which could be a wrong call,” Kohli said during an interaction with K.L. Rahul, his first guest of the evening.

“We have seen this historically how big these things can be in such a high-profile tournament like IPL and in general T20 cricket.

“It is a fast-paced game and you can miss a small margin and we have all seen this is a big factor. If you lose the game by a run and you are not able to review that wide, it could make a massive difference in someone’s campaign,” Kohli added.

Rahul seconded Kolhi and said: “If that rule comes in, it is very good. You can give a team two reviews and say you can use it for whatever.”

Rahul, who is captaining Kings XI Punjab in the ongoing league, feels that a team can be given two reviews instead of one that is available currently.

Asked about changes he would like to bring in in the tournament given a chance, Rahul said, “If someone hits a six over 100 metres, it should be given more runs. I will ask my bowlers about this.”

The 13th edition of IPL is being hosted in the UAE after the organisers could not hold it in India due to a surge in COVID-19 case load. This is the first competitive tournament the Indian cricketers are engaged in following the coronavirus-forced hiatus.

“I was nervous coming into the tournament. I was scared from injury point of view, that fear was always there,” Rahul said.

“There was self doubt, the other part is skill, after having not played for such a long period of time. I was a little nervous but I knew I would enjoy a lot. Once the tournament started, you started getting into the groove... the fear was starting to go away,” Rahul said.

Speaking about captaining a side, which he is doing for the first time in the IPL, Rahul said he is using the learning from the likes of Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the tournament.

“Since it’s my first time doing this, whatever I have played and learnt from you, Mahi bhai, I have tried to pretty much do the same thing.

“I tried to stay balanced in victory and loss, it’s important to ensure that everyone is enjoying ... it’s been a good learning for me, leadership helps to grow individual faster.”

On locking horns against national teammates in franchise-based tournaments like the IPL, Rahul said, “I have been playing IPL for 4-5 years. I don’t think it’s (captaincy) a massive shift, it’s just about understanding each other. We play against each other so oftenm we know our strengths and weaknesses.”
