What's new

If you could show four Bollywood movies to foreigners, what would they be?

Sholay was fantastic for it's time but it would look slightly ridiculous now, especially to a foreign audience.

Think that's one of the main points, Bollywood's meant to be a bit oddball to a foreign audience.

Hey Ram is another good movie but I believe it is an original Tamil movie dubbed in Hindi. Brilliant story, cast and acting.

You should if you are a film connoisseur. He is the greatest Asian film maker along with Akiro Kurosawa.

If there is just one Satyajit Ray movie one must watch, it is Agantuk. Through Utpal Dutt, it was Ray speaking. That conversation between Dutt and Dhritiman Chatterjee is brilliant.

That reminds me of a British film called Rita Sue and Bob too, where one of the girls hooks up with a Pakistani who takes her to watch Sholay. In the scene where Dharmendra is tied up while Hema dances on the glass, he turns to the girl and say "Would you do that for me?" and she tells him to F off. :91:

Yes..Incredible Incredible Film. Kamal Haasan , incredible incredible actor we all know...but his directorials were even more Genious. Along with Heyram, if you get the movie with Subtitles...Watch his Tamil movie Called

"Virumandi" (2004)

See this 20 Part Analysys of Heyram..if you are interested.

problem with kamal hassan is that he is too full of himself and the movie is all about him, overshadowing the story. Movies become vanity vehicles to showcase how many different roles he can act in. At least Rajnikanth has a better voice..not a quivering grainy voice like hassan.

I agree with you from the Late 2000's, it has turned out like that....but that can be termed as the twilight of his career. But he wasnt like this for the majority of his career...Yes, there were Movies like Abhay (2000) which can be self Indulgent. But movies like Chachi 420(1997), Michael Madana Kama raju(1991), Appuraja(1992), Anbe Sivam(2003), SwathiMuthyam(1984), Guna(1991)....even though you see him in "abnormal" characters....it was in sync with the story...it was always movie over himself.

Lately, with the decreasing creativity after 30 years of working...and some self indulgence...he has kind of become a caricature...especially gimmicks like Dasavatharam.

It is important to remember how greatly he tread the path of extreme stardom and Creativity and art for three decades in south industries where hero worship takes out the actor from the star....which happened with great actors like Rajnikanth and Chiranjeevi...who did great work in the 80s...but with growing stardom stuck to their star vehicles unlike Kamal who managed art and finances very well.

Thanks for the response naveen garu, but if you are going to agree with me, I am not going to engage you anymore.

The Apu Trilogy by Ray followed by Bandit Queen by Shehkar Kapoor...maybe Rudaali too if there is room for another movie. Short of that, unfortunately none of the Indian movies have contributed much to the world of serious cinema. Despite being the biggest and loudest movie industry in the world, it has generally failed in creating a unique interpretation and influence on the art of the moving picture.

Upon more thought, missed mentioning two other gems, Parinda by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Ray's Shatranj ke Khilari.

Haha, what a classic film! Conversely, this movie should be shown to a native subcontinental audience. :)))

"Silsila" the classic from the 1980's. Th west will be able to relate to a a story based on an extramarital affair:danish.

"English Venglish" would be another one to teach the American's that non English speakers are not stupid:fizz Throw in the subcontinents Rambo "Maula Jatt" as well;-)

I read recently that the film is no longer considered suitable viewing because the main characters were an older man Bob, sleeping with two school age babysitters. In today's world it would be called grooming, not to mention paedophilia.

I think they were final year schoolgirls, so probably at the age of consent but yeah, it's not really suitable viewing for all.

I really don't watch Indian movies it seems. I can hardly recognise 3,4 movies names here

But gangs of wasseypur seems to be a huge hit here so might have to give it a go skmetime

The cast of gangs of wasseypur isn't that famous. I don't know them. Why didn't they become mainstream since they had such a hit movie with two further sequels?

They didn't become mainstream, I searched for them on Netflix, Sky and Amazon Prime, no luck. There are lots of Indian movies available on Netflix as well, seems like that one isn't really a popular choice.

I have seen them on YouTube

I would recommended

Maine pyar Kiya
Chahat
Kacche daage
Ek ajnabee

Finally someone who has watched Ray.

Have you watched Agantuk?

Wasn't a commercial success, also Nawaz became a big hit after that movie and even Tigmanshu not sure what you on about,it launched so many careers.

^^^ Gangs was a commercial success for its budget and niche audience it creates too !!

Even Richa Chadda became famous after Gangs...along with Nawaz and Tigmanshu Dhulia ( but he was famous as director of paan singh tomar by then )

Try Anurag Kashyap's movies(except Bombay Velvet),you might like them.

I am yet to watch Gangs. I wanted to watch when it first came out but for some reason none of the Indian stores in our area carried the DVD. Its yet to come out on Netflix as far as I know but it is on iTunes. I'm a bit hesitant while reading the description of the movie which describes it as an amalgamation of Godfather and One upon a time in the West, two movies I dearly love. It makes me a wonder why do I need to see an Indian version of the same story or style of movie. Granted, I love Sholay so it may be entertaining to watch if nothing else. Hopefully soon...I will write my review and let you guys know.

"Mr India" and "Qayamat se Qayamat Tak" are good ones as well. I watch little Bollywood folks compared to all you experts above who seem to invest a lot of time in it!:afridi One Indian film I really enjoyed is "In Custody". It is not a Bollywood movie but would come under parallel cinema. It is about an ageing and frustrated Urdu poet on his last legs played by the late Shashi Kapoor who is writing a book. If anyone has seen it then do let me know. Shabana Azmi and Om Puri complete the cast. Now these are what I call real actors. You get a feel of the real India, the old India when watching it.

After going though this thread I watched the GOW, it’s a very good movie, definitely top tier for Indian cinema. It’s a crime drama, direction, culture, story line, language in the movie was not just Indian but very specific to that area. They did a very good job in telling the story. Brutal and rawness in their life and culture was portrayed in HBO style, normally you don’t associate that with Indian movies.

Cast of movie was also again strong actors, not good looking one. That’s why they are not famous like the Khans and Bachans. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is probably one of the best actor ATM in Indian cinema, his acting in always very natural to the role and evolves so well within the movie.

Thanks guys for recommending this, I would definitely recommend GOW to others. I will look into some other recommendations in this thread, when get a time :)

^ BTW: GOW is available on YouTube for free. I could not find elsewhere, print was reasonable, but not HD.

Mainstreams movies are rarely good ones. Look at avengers and marvel billions of dollar franchise. They are the most junk movies out there, yet infinity war has already made billion dollar in two weeks. Whole world is getting dummer by day, well marvel is MD of movies, after watching marvel movies, I can get a sense why religion is popular 🙄🙄

Nasiruldin shah, Om puri were never popular actors of their time, because they were not good looking and glamorous, Same is true with airframe Khan and NS. Desis have sense of insecurity about looks, they cannot see pass that. Katerina Kaif is most famous actoress of her time, main reason is she looks more western than Indian, it’s not just looks, she actually had mixed genes 🙃

You should not go by popular choice in general for movies any where in the world. Atleast in west Oscar movies are generally good quality.

I must admit, I don't see the attraction of Katrina Kaif, I have no idea why she is popular. Lots of Pakistani girls look like that in the UK, you seen one, you've seen them all.

It's not a must to try, GOW his other movies like Dev D, Ugly you can try them, the reason for GOW is probably the rawness of the film with some great background score and music.
It's defn not like GODFATHER and OUTIW.

Am not really much of a crier but was sobbing like a child during AppuRaja and Anjali (1990)(by Mani Ratnam). Was only 13 when I watched the movies though.

Yeah, both of the heartbreakers ! Kamal has a bunch of thoose....Mahanadi (1993) was one more of those.

I bought Gangs of Wasseypur on Blu Ray since the print online anywhere is not good enough and the subtitles are awful

So on the first Sunday I showed them Gangs of Wasseypur 1. Everyone has to rate the movie out of 10 after. It got two 10s, two 8s, a 7.5 and a 7. The average scores for movies shown are usually much lower. Everyone loved it

Will show them part 2 next week

Those ratings cant be taken seriously. After all the trouble you took to show them the movie, the least they could do was to politely patronise you. The one who gave 7 was being the most honest.

Captain Saheb

If you will keep a request, please watch Gangs of Wasseypur. And review it.

Thanks.

Some of my Canadian friends and I meet up every weekend to watch a movie. Everyone gets their own month where they pick a movie for each weekend to show everyone else. May is my month and I thought I'd show some Bollywood with subtitles of course.

Figured it shouldn't be too hard to pick 4 since most Bollywood movies are garbage. However selecting 4 is harder than I thought. 3 I think I have decided upon are

Dil Chahta Hai
Gangs of Wasseypur
Gangs of Wasseypur 2

Some others I thought about were 3 idiots, Black Friday, Ship of Theseus, Anand, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, Devdas, Company, Rangeela. Thought about Lagaan and while it is an excellent movie, I feel it delves very deep into Indian culture and it probably wouldn't be as enjoyable if you don't know cricket. Same with Swades

These people are actual intellectual/avid film watchers so please no Varun Dhawan/Alia Bhatt trash

Show them a Satyajit Ray Movie.

Thats a tough question. Lagaan.. obviously. Bhagat ingh (any movie based on him) I am a Pakistani and a huge fan of Bhagat singh
sholay
karma

some oldies there.. i dont watch too many indian movies anymore.

For me definitely these three:

1) 3 Idiots - has pretty much everything, nice plot, comedy, drama, etc.

2) Bajrangi bhaijaan - again nice plot, comedy and a bit of action too - And a proven hit with some of my foreigner friends!

3) Dangaal - true story, women empowerment - so foreigner women will like it.

4) Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara - just a fun filled movie. Nice entertainment.

My recommendations -

1. Black Friday (Epic stuff!)
2. Gangs of Wasseypur (both parts)
3. 3 Idiots (all my Chinese friends have seen it & love the movie)
4. Satya

Now I feel obligated. Apparently it is available on Youtube so I shall watch it there. You can be assured that I will give it the review which will strike a cord with the aam Timepass members. Deadball and saadibaba will give you the highly nuanced breakdown with every emotion and camera angle analysed, but from me you will get the Joe Punter view, albeit delivered with a know all perspective. Stay tuned, I will try and get to it this week.

Please don’t watch the one on YouTube. Quality is awful. Try to download it in HD but it’ll be difficult to get well translated subtitles

Why do you need subtitles? Is it in one of the south Indian languages? I don't really watch pirates so downloading an HD version is going to be a problem. I watch movies on a 4k 65" screen, don't particularly want to download a film to watch it on a laptop.

It’s not an south movie, it’s mainly Urdu then any other language. Story revolves around Muslim families(Qureshi and Pathans), so local language was Urdu centric as well.

Should be okay without subtitles then.

aliasaad1998 ,Anurag's series

Its his second btw, he did one with Amitabh but not that high budget and as expected it flopped coz storyline Indian public is not used to anymore.

You will get 1080 quality on pirated.

I will probably watch a snippet of the film on Youtube even if it is poor quality just to get an idea of it. If it's good enough it will end up on some major streaming service somewhere. Who knows, if I'm struck with the idea this is a film I must see, I could even buy a blu ray dvd version. Although that's not going to happen.

Man not one recommendation on ”Kahaani” I guess nobody likes thrillers these days. The ending twist will blow you’re mind.

Netflix has some brilliant Marathi movies like Killa , Court and Sairat for anyone interested in non Bollywood quality cinema.

Don't overthink things. Download it, set a couple of hours aside, watch it, and get on with life.

Mods can move those posts to the cinephiles thread if they feel it is appropriate. That is a place where we film connoisseurs can discuss the niceties of these films in deserving details leaving this one free for the yahoos to carry on as they wish.

Did ya see that gangs of NY knockoff?

I saw Gangs of NY ages ago, is the knock off version the Wasseypur film? I haven't seen that yet, still busy discussing it on here.

Yup, that's the one. Gangs of NY was disappointing, putting decaprio and diaz on screen with Day Lewis is just

So watched this movie Mukkabaaz (2017) about a boxer.
Kashyap sent his second unit director Saqib Pandor), to record boxing tournaments on camera and the state tournament shown in the film is recreation of actual tournaments they had recorded on camera. They witnessed a boxing tournament happening under the tent and without an audience because their own space was occupied by something else and other boxers who sit and watch them. He also realized that after attending an actual boxing tournament in north India that there was no audience apart from people in power who decide which boxer should represent the state, and who will not. Kashyap then told Singh to train himself and he started training in Mumbai. Kashyap told him not to do the "filmi training" but to become a hardcore boxer. There are no boxing choreographers, action directors in the film. Singh was trained for a year to play the boxer's role by a coach, Anudeep Singh, who was coaching people for free and runs a garage for money. He told Kashyap that he wanted to be a boxer but he could not play. These stories were also used for the research of the film. Singh did not disclose that he was preparing for a role in film to his coach

Awesome movie. Made me wonder how many athletes are wasted to 'caste system' (in India) and corruption (in both India/Pakistan).

8.5/10. Top movie from a top director.

Again Anurag Kashyap, looks like cinema lovers outside India don't even try other directors' movies, btw the Mukkabaz lead was Danish in GANGS of wasseypur.

Loved the song though by Divine and Nucleya painthra.

Guide (tragedy)
Pyaasa (drama)
Andaz Apna Apna(Comedy)
Any decent SRK movie(romance)

Good choice ,Pyaasa was originally to star Dilip Kumar but apparently he didn't turn up for shoot and Guru Dutt took on himself, worked wonders for him I would say.

Guide is probably great film too, i.would recommend Kagaz Ke phool as well.

Was alright, fell a bit flat after a good beginning. Not as good as Gangs Of Wasseypur, Ugly, etc. I would give it a 6.5 to 7.

Try Johnny Gaddar and Ek haseena thi. Both are psychological thrillers directed by a guy who used to be a ram gopal verma associate.

Kagaz ke phool is the Macbeth of Bollywood, Dutt based it on an Indian directors life (dunno the name), and Dutt himself went through very similar circumstances afterwards and ended up dying prematurely. Him and Madhubala in Bollywood and James Dean in Hollywood were the tragedies of those times

He made Badlapur recently and imo better than those two, that movie was good from start to finish.

GOW is top tier movie. The way director introduces new characters and how easily he develops in a few minutes is Oscar-worthy IMO. Iconic stuff. I'll watch 'Ugly' next.
