"I'm one of the most senior players around, am experienced enough to help Pak team" : Faisal Iqbal

KARACHI: The retirement of Test legends Younus Khan and Misbahul Haq after the West Indies series has left a gaping hole in the Pakistan middle order, with several names being touted to fill the void.

Karachi’s middle-order batsman Faisal Iqbal has thrown his name among the mix, and is confident of making a surprise comeback into the national fold — despite not donning the whites since January 2010.

Iqbal, despite being 35, still feels he has some years left in him and revealed that he has been working to stay fit.

“I have been working on my fitness and my skills. I know I am fit enough to be in the national team and will be considered if I perform in the upcoming domestic season,” Iqbal told The Express Tribune. “Two experienced players have left the team and a space in the middle-order is open. I am a middle-order batsman and that is where I have been performing well there for some years now.”

Iqbal scored 493 runs in the last Quaid-e-Azam trophy in seven matches. His runs came at a decent but unspectacular average of 37.92 and strike-rate of 52.55 — scoring one century and three half-centuries in 14 innings.

“When an experienced player leaves the team, another senior player should replace him,” he said. “No team in the world can succeed with just young players. There has to be a combination of senior and junior players. I am one of the senior-most players around and am experienced enough to help the side.”

He added that the selection committee is selecting purely on merit, which means he just needs to catch their eye. “I am sure if I perform in the domestic cricket I will get a place in the team. I have been working hard for this and the time has finally come to earn back a place in the team,” he said. “When I was dropped from the team, I was told to keep performing in the domestic circuit and that I will be considered once a slot opens up in the middle-order. Hence, I will be doing my best this season in order to achieve my target of returning to the national side.”

Iqbal added that he has been focusing on four-day and one-day formats rather than the shortest version of the game. “I was not picked for the upcoming national T20 as I have not performed in that format, but in four-day cricket I have been scoring centuries,” he said. “I have been leading Karachi Zebra for the past seven years but since this time around there is only one team from Karachi in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, competition will be even tougher.”

Help???

What is he smoking?

You should say you want to serve ur nation, and here he's talking about helping.

Akmal and Iqbal...

I am certain Faisal is an avid reader of the PP forum, and makes these statements just to wind up the readers.

Soon as I saw the thread title I was eager to see the responses to this given how bad this guy is :)))

Abdullah719 ur dp express my response lolz//

Never rated him but he looked brilliant when he hit that century against India in Karachi, but then was out of sorts against England in the summar, however made a decent half century in the final test. Played number 3 in Australia during the 9-0 trashing when nobody else wanted to.

Chicago Disney world legend needs to be back in the team.. he a senior beauty

honestly i think the same

No one can be this delusional.

How he reconciles reality with his own sense of grandeur is beyond me

I am sure that he is the worst player every to lay 20+ Tests

He bowled well when he played if he can maintain that average then he's well worth another chance.

“When an experienced player leaves the team, another senior player should replace him,” he said.

If that is the case - then there is no one better than Fawad Alam for that spot. He deserves way more than this benchwarmer.

i guess age n no of matches is all that matters when these cricketers talk about experience

Not the fact that u werent any good No Thats conveniently put aside

LOL if a mediocre player wants to make a comeback out of the blue after 7 years just because he is a senior. As if anyone is foolish enough to select a 35 year old player in the team. The only way he can play international cricket again is through sifarish.

Evidentally, all those pics at recreation parks in the U.S. were all part of an elaborate scheme and brilliant plan to sharpen his cricketing skills...I mean it takes courage and absolute foolish moral character for a 35 year old to get his pics taken with characters that 2-3 olds idolize LOL

We must pick him up ASAP, he will show everyone how to laugh in the face of adversity without scoring any runs; who cares about winning and losing and scoring runs, you have to be a hasbeen* senior to display that absolute grit!

*'Hasbeen' category had to be lowered by quite a few notches to include him in that category as well

I like how after reading the thread title you see Abdullah719 's display picture immediately

What really frightens me is that attitude. Im the senior most. Makes you wonder how much does he bully other fellow players with his ego

If the pcb is going out of its way to welcome an unrepentant Salman Butt than we can also expect more of this

So the new trend is every uncle will come out and say I have 5-6 years left in me and am senior & experienced.
What has happened to these uncles lately? First Kami, now Faisal. What next Imran Farhat saying pick me as I am experienced and we have an opening slot?

Multiple "seniors" had better domestic seasons than him.

He wouldn't get picked if Inzi used these criteria of age + first class experience. :))

Respect the elders who command respect, on and off the field. Faisal sadly is neither.

I bet Mohammed Yousaf can make a comeback at this rate and going by his appearence, he seems fitter than both Bara Akmal as well this ParkFan Senior...and he might outscore both of them as well LOL

I have no problem him coming back if he has improved his technique and scoring tons of runs in domestic cricket.

But the problem with Faisal is he always suffers from a victim mentality complex.

If you are scoring runs even these corrupt selectors can not always ignore you. However just saying you ready to comeback means nothing and he should shut his trap and let the bat do the talking.

The only thing he has improved at is making excuses and having an even bigger victim mentality.

Exactly, his numbers don't look that great.

I think it's obvious the ship has sailed for him and he should be realistic rather than being delusional.

Play him in the World XI series as I've said before. Give these TTFs a final goodbye before we discard them forever

It is 10 years too late to ask for a recall. His best bowling days are behind him should now concentrate on becoming an all rounder where he can bat aswell team needs an all rounder.

First Umer and now Faisal Iqbal :))

Pakistani players entertain even in the off season!

Now all we need is for Imran Farhat to throw his hat in the ring and the dream team will be complete.

Everyone has a right to play for Pakistan, he is only 35.

However you should use the right means to be a part of the team, if you are worthy, you should be the best player in domestics and outperform others.

Not because you are the nephew of a Pakistani great

Everyone has a right yes, but by making the bat talk not by giving interviews.
Also if 2 players of same calibre one 35+ senior making comeback after 5 years and other a youngster than surely the youngster should be preferred. You have to be really really good for consideration in that age. Really good!

A player of Faisal Iqbal's class however... deserves to walk straight back into the team. Age is just a number

No I'm not saying this, theoretcially everyone deserves to be in the side... We can both agree he doesn't have the performance for it.. its good to dream again but is he in the merit list? I don't think so

Why not, the guy has dominated two greatest spinners of all time, Warne and Murali in tests in their peak years.

Just wasting his time with all of this trolling. It's not even funny tbh.

Please no!

This guy is worse than Umar Akmal.

Thanks but no thanks - you were a poor player even during your prime and bring no value whatsoever to the team. Stay at home and continue to play domestic cricket or maybe become a coach/adminsitrator.

Dont you guys miss the days of Imran Farhat, Salman Butt Faisal Iqbal, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez spearheading our batting lineup?

Haha please do not remind me of that 2010 tour of England again!

Why not, the guy has dominated two greatest spinners of all time, Warne and Murali in tests in their peak years.

Are those two still playing, how many tests he dominated or rather an innings or two, what were his scores against the two in the subsequent innings later on, has he dominated any 'Phaast Bowlers'...endless questions come to mind?

Not to forget what is his overall average and against good/great teams? If it is less than 35 than you know why he is hated by most Pak fans.

While we're at it we should never forget the deadliest bowling pair we've ever produced, the 2Rs, Rao and Rana with Sami as first change.

This lineup would be perfect if only Yusuf is allowed to captain it though !!

Astonishing how we actually managed to win a few series with those bowlers :maqsood

Faisal vows to make strong comeback

ISLAMABAD - Test discarded Faisal Iqbal has sought justice from PCB chairman Najam Sethi and chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, hoping his fortunes may change now with both Misbah-ul-Haq and Younus Khan bow out from international cricket.

Talking to The Nation, middle order right-handed batsman Faisal said: “I am highly unfortunate to be the nephew of legendry Javed Miandad. I was always given step-motherly treatment and had to face rash attitude at the hands of different quarters, but I never lost hope and kept my entire focus on performing on the field and shut the mouths of critics with a series of superb batting displays.”

He said: “I am the only player in the country, who was 12th man for three consecutive series and total of 8 Test matches in 2012, I was not given a single Test match. I kept on carrying water, sitting on the bench but never complaint. I had staged three comebacks in national team. I accept that during my debut, we had great middle order batsmen like Inzamam, Misbah, Younus, M Yousaf and Asim Kamal while the opportunities were very limited.

“I had scored 9 centuries in domestic cricket and list A from 2011 to 2013, but I was never given opportunity to be in the playing XI and was dropped without any reason and also left out from PCB central contracted players’ list. When I was 12th man, I scored two tons in first class cricket and was number one batsman in 2011 and 2012 domestic seasons, but I became victim of biased policies,”
he added.

He said anyhow it is past now and situation is completely different. “The PCB has a new chairman in shape of Najam Sethi, who undoubtedly is doing a fantastic job for cricket and team. His brainchild Pakistan Super League (PSL) is a all-out success and now he is playing active role in reviving international cricket in Pakistan. It is not a joke to bring world’s elite group of players to Pakistan in shape of World XI. It will surely go a long way in helping Pakistan cricket and boost the youngsters’ careers and provide a life-time opportunity to local fans to witness elite group of players playing in front of them.

“I know the atmosphere of Lahore, which is hosting the three T20 matches, is electrifying, but the cricket fever has taken the entire country. It is a huge success of Sethi and his team and I would love to be part of the green caps on this historic occasion, but my sincere prayers and best wishes are with both the teams. International players have come out with clear message that they support Pakistan and regard feeling of the cricket-mad masses of this country,”
he added.

He said after Younus and Misbah, Pakistan team is in dire need of a senior batsman, who may boost middle order and provide runs and also take juniors with him. “I am sure the time is perfect to make a strong comeback. I can assure the PCB and Inzamam that I will never disappoint them and play to the best of abilities and try to spearhead Pakistan middle order.

“Pakistan team badly needs an experienced campaigner and I am sure the PCB will provide me a fair chance. My aim is to perform in domestic cricket and show my fitness and commitment and leave the rest on the selectors. If they think my consistent performances are enough, they will provide me with a deserving opportunity and it is my promise, if given a chance, I will never disappoint the selectors and the nation,”
Faisal concluded.

This way, all Test innings (for Pak at least) will be over in 1-2 hours and everyone can go home and rest...more time for family, twitter etc.

Everyone wins...now if we can add Umar, Kamran, and Adnan (Akmals), Sohail Tanvir, Anwar Ali, Bhatti, Fisherman Hameed, Riaz Afridi, and last but not least Nasir Jamshed, it will be a world beater XI i.e. Easiest XI to be beaten by everyone including Associates :hafeez2

I think Iqbal is write he must've faced some injustice, however he will never ever be considered now that Miandad is in PCB bad books.
He is right to feel aggrieved after all Misbah was his colleague and PCB chose him to captain the side at 36. Now that Misbah has changed the dynamics of all selection criteria, every other player will also lament about not being selected despite his age.

Think news of Fawad Alam's NCA assignment is spreading thick and fast

Wasn’t the worst to have played for PK. His links to Miandad helped when he was younger but the same association hindered him in a big way later.

I wish he would put his energies in something constructive!

Being a "senior" : to require this valuable and highly sought after skill, all you have to do is, do absolutely nothing and just keep getting older until you are in your mid 30s. Upon which you can proudly use the "I am senior" card and demand anything you please.

What an ungrateful person this guy is

The guy who came in place of him was Ayub Dogar. Ayub Dogar was toping every freaken season. He had a huge amount of runs. Poor guy only played 1 test and left quietly.

Atleast this guy played a few matches. Now its his own fault that he couldnt prove his worth.

Also, if faisal had placed up a performance like AYub Dogar did in domestic then he might have had a case.
