"Imam-ul-Haq has been a top performer as an opener so he will get opportunities" : Inzamam-ul-Haq

Inzamam speaking on TV during the QeA Trophy final:

"I think that the captain and coach are very close to the team so it's important to take their advice into consideration."

"It wasn't easy for me to leave the Afghanistan job but I wanted to do whatever I can to help my country."

"The door for selection isn't closed for anyone. But if 12 players have performed well in a tournament doesn't mean I can put 12 players in the team. It depends on the team's requirements. For example in past few years, Younis, Misbah and Shafiq have been doing well in the middle-order and now Babar Azam is doing well so it's difficult to introduce someone in the middle order. But no one should be disheartened."

"I am giving first-class cricket a lot of importance. We need to give our performers a chance, as and when it's possible. Performances for A team also count a lot."

(Regarding investment in Ahmed Shehzad) "PCB also invested a lot in me back in the day, does that mean I should be part of the team? It's his performances that are going to be key if he wants to make a comeback."

"Kamran Akmal is doing very well so we are considering him - but Mohammad Rizwan is also there with the team after he gave some great performances in domestic cricket."

"It's important to let a player play in a whole season of domestic cricket when they are returning from a 5-year ban. We should not make selections in haste."

"Imam-ul-Haq has been a top performer as an opener. So he will get opportunities. I have made this clear - if you perform, you will be considered. It's not a difficult decision to make for me as selections are based on performances."

"Every coach and captain has their own thoughts. I have had very positive discussions with Mickey Arthur. But the relationship between a coach and captain is very close. I was captain under Woolmer and I haven't seen practice sessions like the ones we had under him."

"My fight after the Oval Test was not with Shahryar Khan, it was with Darrell Hair."

"Getting a good farewell depends on both sides, the board and the player. Players should leave in the best way. I don't want anyone to feel like they are under pressure to retire. The decisions are up to them."

"I played 5 or 6 series in NZ, the pitches weren't like that previously. They took a chance and Pakistan couldn't cope with the pitches well. It was tough for the batsmen and the bowlers."

"In England, the team went a month before the start of the series which gave them time to adjust from UAE pitches. Unfortunately, the schedule didn't permit that before the NZ series."

"I am not thinking negatively about our team, I'm hopeful that we will do well in Australia. We need to be positive about the team that has been selected."

Absolutely - and he should. Inzi should not worry about any accusations of nepotism etc in this case.

This is a very level headed interview. And in line with his personality.
There were concerns from some quarters about his commitment to the job consider his business and religious preoccupations. But I believe he is doing a fine job. Tougher tests await - usually selectors in Pakistan start blaming captain and coach when results are not coming. I don't think inzi will do that. He is also the right person to have on board to gradually phase out yk and misbah. For better or for worse stature matters a lot in Pakistan

Watch out Inzy, now people will blast you for favouritism towards your nephew.

Anyway, you wait 15 years for some decent openers and suddenly they all come along.

Azhar, Aslam, Imam and a few others. Some depth there.

Only time will tell about Imam, but when I met him a couple of years ago, the young man impressed me with his personality and calmness. He needs to work on his strike rotation but def has a chance.

What a double standard.

I agree, Imam is a very talented player and thoroughly deserves a chance, I liked him when I saw him first time in under 19 WC, I thought he was better than Sami.

But what about the other performing , like Fakhar, Usman, Kamran and why Younis Khan cannot be dropped after so many failure and really bad failure. He is the worst selector we ever had.

He has already said the same for Usman and Kamran (I think?) who have had fantastic seasons.

Younis Khan is a much bigger problem and will be very difficult to move on from, mostly because any hint of a suggestion of him being dropped is likely to result in some sagas. That will not only be Inzi's call anyway.

To put Pakistan cricket back on the right path, these people need to leave and be replaced.

Chairman SH Khan : Too old and physically not fit for job after his recent surgery. Doesn't realize age is a reality for a player, persisting with Misbah and YK

Younis Khan : enough said

Misbah: his time is way up, has nothing much to contribute to Pak cricket, as player and captain

Inzimam: Has no short term and long term plan. No guts to take any positive steps , all he can do is insulting two players, Shehzad and Umar Akmal.

Inzamam and Imam! Damned if you do damned if you dont!

So what do you guys think, Imam has been performing outstandingly whether a first class or list A he is performing and rightfully deserves a chance but if he fails in his debut series, will Inzamam be under scrutiny of favouritism by our pathetic bunch of so called sports journalists!!

Imam looks a great talents and now he is scoring too. He should be fast tracked to national side.

Pakistan need at least 4 - 5 new batters , so that those in the team have pressure to perform.

Not every domestic performer is selector's bhatija. :)

Fakhar Zaman, Tabish khan, Sadaf Hussain, Fawad Alam and other consistent performers should forget playing for Pakistan.

not a double standard... he is talking about openers, only Fakhar is the competition, to note fakhar has got the opportunity in PAK A team deservedly ahead of Imam ul Haq... he has to say and give confidence to the double centurion who hasnt got a chance yet even in A squads.. I look at it this way...
