Young and hopeful Imam-ul-haq is debuting against Sri Lanka today in place of Shehzad.

He will be the second Pakistani player to wear spectacles on the field after Zaheer Abbas, lets see if he can match the former great, or even his uncle Inzi.

He has a list A average of 36 and a strike rate of 74 which are poor for modern standards. Lets hope he does better than this, personally feel that he is an inexperienced shehzad.

All the best. :bhatti

Not a fan of cricketers who make it to the team based on connections and steal someone else's rightful opportunity. I won't be hoping that he does well.

That's fine, but don't disappear when Imam plays a fine innings today. Come right back to this thread and apologize for questioning Chief Selector. :inzi

Decent prospect but picked for the wrong format imo, but lets see how he does although his numbers are not spectacular in List A cricket

Have you seen him bat ? and what is his history playing for pakistan A or U-19 team

I am hoping for the best but Haris deserved the spot ahead of him

His List A stats suggest that the odds are against him. If is unfair to expect him to up his ave. from md-30s and S/R of 74 when facing international quality bowlers.

For a young Pakistani batsman, he is technically very good.

Those stats don't look great but he is only 21, which means that those stats don't tell us much. Not many 21 year olds will have great stats. At his age, potential and room for development count more.

Very impressive Mashallah.I remember when fans dismissed Faheem Ashraf as a trundler and tailender but he surprised every one.I hope that Imam does the same.

Especially for an opener.

Not a single cross-batted shot so far. Gets behind the ball every time, balance is very good as well. Very good basics for a 21 year old.

This is the first time I have watched him and I am surprised that he hasn't been hyped much. His technique should make him stand out from the rest.

Doesn't look any worse than Azhar Ali and he's only 21. Plenty of room to improve and giving youngsters like him a few chances against international teams is how we can accelerate their growth.

Should be selected in the test squad for the next series.

Looks quite good, especially considering the nerves of making a debut, and the very slow wicket

I really like his intent, similar to Fakhar is that regard, just didn't seem to connect as much at the start of the game

Hopefully he isn't dropped for Azhar anytime soon

It's surprising that you don't consider him too slow for this format.

He is making his debut, have to take into account the nerves. Moving forward he obviously has to bat at a SR of 85+.

He would make a solid Test batsman actually.

However now that he been picked for this format he needs and deserves a run of more than a few matches.

Can't keep chopping and changing every few matches.

How tall is he? Looks like he has good reach.

Another young batsmen who isn't assured against spin. We're turning in to England.

He is a future test opener for sure.

Only thing I have noticed today is he has played and missed at a couple wide of off-stump. I will put it down to nerves for now, but something to keep an eye on.

Imam reminds me of myself in terms of looks. The beard and the double-barrel flaring nostrils. :razzaq Hope he permantley replaces Shehzad.

Besides, he's chasing 200, not 300.

30 dots in 46 deliveries is too much though. Time will tell if he is cut for ODIs, but he certainly looks like a good prospect for Tests.

Also missed out on some deliveries on the leg-side early in his innings, but yes have to take debut nerves into consideration.

Is it really as many dots as that?

Seems to have a lot of time when he plays his shots, which is always a good sign.

To be fair, it is turning a fair amount.

Looks a lot better when he uses his feet against the spinners.

Can't believe you're saying this man. He's one of the brightest talents in Pakistan.

Nicely put by Danny Morrison.

Imamul does play a bit like Tom Latham. Nice and compact. Looks to take singles and the occasional boundary.

I too was surprised by this.

Imam's selection is not nepotism. He is a big prospect for Pakistan, especially in tests.

Shan Masood on the other hand...

hogging the strike too much; has played almost double the number of balls than his aggressive partner; thats not good for Pak

Doesn't look like he's selected due to nepotism.

Nothing spectacular that I've seen but nothing wrong either.

Doesn't seem to be out of his class or unable to face bowling at this level at all.

People who say it's nepotism are being unfair. If Inzi was desperate to select his nephew, he would have selected him earlier considering he was the best opener in QEA last season.

Looks like a solid player.

Any day over Sir.Ahmed Shehzad. However, I feel like he is better suitable for test matches but can be made lethal for ODIs with further guidance. He is physically fit and possesses the basic power, also is a clean striker with not so bad technique.

If we can give Ahmed Shehzad so many chances we can do that for Imam too. Imam atleast doesn't look nerveous and can rotate the strike. InshaAllah, he will get better with time. He is only 21, playing at an international level for his country.

Please back him and dont yell " NEPOTISM, Nepotism". He has shown class.

Lol, really dude? You made this comment without even seeing him bat. :))

I think he deserved to be selected but for test cricket. Lets face it, you have to go along way to find openers as terrible as Shan and Sami. So far he has shown that he isnt bad in the ODI but bigger tests await.

I will take a leaf out of your textbook and say that he is not the person you want to select when the total to be chased down is 300+. Already he is below par when it comes to his S/R. I am not sure if you can develop him into a more aggressive player. That comes naturally.

Inzi has played a master stroke by selecting him against a depleted SL side on pitches that he has seen on the domestic circuit. A few good scores and Inzi will have the numbers to back his decision to include him for away series or inclusion in tests.

Well his List A average of 36 didn't inspire any confidence.

True but the sample size is very small so that ought to have fluctuated, anyhow hard to make prediction based on what we've seen when it comes to his prospects in ODI's but he's technically very sound and a prospect we should give some chances at the Test level.

His SR will be a problem if it doesn't improve with time. He needs to strike at 85+.

Very good performance from him. I wouldn't look too much into his SR considering the Lankans have bowled pretty well and the pitch is also very slow and the ball is keeping low. Not the easiest pitch to bat on - evident from FZ's innings under an SR of 100.

Syed1 The most interesting aspect is that IIRC, this lad has the highest ever Under-19 runs. So, has a lot of performances behind him to support his claims of being a good batsman.

He has got a better shot range than i thought but i have doubts over his ability to maintain a strike rate when we are batting first or chasing a big score.

Good on for now, and i said i earlier he was selected for the wrong format, remains to be seen if he be what we want in odis. We cant afford another grafter

Did he break Sami's record of most U-19 runs?

He's bulked-up and looks a lot stronger since I last saw him.

Footwork looks assured and he looks to pick up the length very quickly.

Also looks like he has worked on his strokeplay.

Next time, keep in mind that Inzamam has his job for a reason. Us fans need to stop thinking we know better than the people who are involved in the cricketing set-up.

Someone should tell run scoreboards about the wisdom of these selectors. Because they aren't nearly as kind to Imam as his relatives have been. Anyone who gets selected with a 36 LA average and SR 74, when Sahibzada is plundering runs for fun at SR 100, he enjoyed a good slice of luck. Great for Imam that he rode his luck today, but I fear that in the long run the strong historical correlation between domestic LA performance and international ODI results does not count in his favor.

Thanks. That list isn't inspiring at all, hardly any name there has gone on to excel at the top level. Hopefully Imam will have a better career than his contemporary Sami.
Do you know why Sami hasn't been able to score runs in international cricket like he did in U-19's?

Do you know why Sami hasn't been able to score runs in international cricket like he did in U-19's?

Some players are good for their age group but then they don't progress at the same rate. Sami was good during his teenage years, but he hasn't progressed much in the last few years. In addition, his negative approach doesn't help either.

Doesn't look international material and I think he is not going to play another match for Pakistan in a long time.
