Imam-ul-Haq took Pakistan’s defeat by Australia to heart at Taunton, admitting he felt “huge disappointment” after getting out tamely just when he thought he was in a position to inspire his side to a famous World Cup win.

Pakistan’s opener looked in fine form and had just reached his 50 in a dangerous-looking partnership with veteran Mohammad Hafeez as his side were 136/2, chasing what seemed a reachable target of 308, when he was dismissed for 53 off 75 balls in soft fashion by Pat Cummins.
From a ball which was short down the leg side, and would have been called a wide had he left it alone, Imam tried to pull but could only glove it to the Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey.

It was a dismissal that transformed the match with three more wickets tumbling quickly and it left Imam so crestfallen that he hung his head and could barely him drag himself away back to the pavilion.
“Obviously, I’m playing well - and this team depends on me and Babar (Azam),” he said. “When Babar got out (for 30), it was then my responsibility and I was going well but it was not a good ball that got me out, the same as I did against the West Indies.
“I knew I’d spent a hell of a lot of time on a tricky wicket so I knew it wouldn't be easy for any new batsman to come in. So it was a huge disappointment because it’s a World Cup stage and if you get set, you really have to make it count if you want to stay in the tournament.
“If I’ve scored 30 in a winning side, that would be great, I’d be very happy. As a pro, if you’re winning matches for your country, that’s the best thing and if you’re not even if you score a fifty, that’s a huge disappointment.”

Despite some late defiance from captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and freewheeling number nine Wahab Riaz, Sarfaraz’s men succumbed by 41 runs and are now in an increasingly precarious position in eighth place.

Asked if it now made the hugely high-pressured match against neighbours India on Sunday at Old Trafford a must-win affair, Imam admitted: “Yes, we’ve had one game rained off which was very important for us - every game now is very important for us, so yes you can say that.

“Obviously, to be part of that kind of game, it’s great. It’s in Manchester, lots of Pakistani fans there - so I’m really excited about it.
“It’s a huge pressure game, obviously. Pakistan and India, there’s a lot of mysteries behind that but we want to just focus on our cricket strengths and how we can get better.”

I can't believe people are calling him selfish. It was obvious that he wanted pak to win the match. It's sad that he got out by a nothing ball.

Bhai Imam ap rehne hi dein.... your days are accounted for anyway as soon as chachu leaves your position in the side will not be guaranteed and soon after you will get the boot.

Seems like the Misbah era is back. Either Babar/Imam tuk tuk till the 40th over or we're bowled out for 200 odd.

He was playing the anchor role well, and he was starting to cut loose. If he stayed for a few more overs we would have won the match. Some of the criticism of him has been down-right disgusting.

What if he doesn't get the boot after his chachu leaves??

Nothing wrong with his innings today apart from the awful dismissal. People will find anything to cry about

Hafeez is also scoring runs. The main culprits are Shoaib and Asif, the likes of Fakhar also need to take a good look at themselves.

That must be the reason the team is losing 90% of matches it plays soft run makers who go missing when the team needs them most.

Wasn't his fault.. Shoaib and Asif should have scored the 40 runs margin we lost to Australia by

Get ready for Azhar Ali v2 to inspire the next generation of Pakistani batsmen.

:inzi2

To stay at the wicket? It'll be a blessing in disguise Afridi already ruined his generation of cricket up and comers

They shouldn't have been playing. One of the reasons we depend on Imam and Babar is because the middle order is made up of people who can barely hold a bat.

Imam and Babar are our 2 most reliable batters. There's no guarantee that Fakhar will come off. Teams know where to howl to him. Don't even need to explain our middle order issues.

Imam today should be disappointed with his dismissal. He was going along nicely. Then gets out to a ball he should have put away. All we needed today was someone to bat through the innings and we would have won. Imam had everything under control. He has got out in that manner before. He really needs to rectify this issue because it is really frustrating when a batter gets out in that manner.

The hate for Imam has got to stop though. He is doing his job which is to bat through the innings. He needs to improve his strike rotation and shot range. But since has had made his international debut he has shown signs of improvement . He also knows how to get centuries when set. We should be looking at others before having a go at Imam. Whether you like it or not , he is here to stay. So you need to hope he improves because we arent producing better batters than him and Babar at the moment.

Misbah saved his side from embarrassment many a times

Seems like Babar, Imam will have to do the same and cut the expensive shots. Need to either quit hooking or improve it.

Misbah was very good with this. He knew his limits and annoyed the hell out of the opposition.

Same goes for Babar. Both have their issues, but they are miles ahead of any other batting candidate simply because they bat according to the bowling and can judge when to play shots mostly. The rest are either dimwits or just technically deficient.

:)))

this team depends on Fakhar Zaman and nobody else.

This guy or Babar never share the onus like Hafeez or Fakhar do. They never play scoring shots. See the likes of Joe Rootor KAne Williamson how they put the whole team burden on their shoulders going for shots. These undeserving players are actually given a free hand by management to consolidate their innings.

Even if Imam had been on the crease when Pakistan crossed 200, we would've still lost the match. this guy would never have scored with a 90 strike rate 100 is further away.

His was a soft dismissal similar to the match against Windies and South Africa, he was unable to play or complete the damn pull shot and the bowl went to the keeper kissing his glove on the way. He has limited ability and technique. Whatever 50s or 100s he makes Pakistan won't win those games.

Great going lad!! wish you best of luck for the rest of the tournament except the match against us:smith

We just have 4 bats:fakhar(inconsistent but important),imam ,babar and hafeez.
Need to drop malik for haris and sarfi shadab and the tailenders can add 100 150 between them on a good day .

I think he is Pakistan’s most sensible batsman in a change, and I hope he personally feels miserable over the next few days about grit get this win

This guy is made of the right stuff, I'm telling you guys, hope he keeps up the hard work

When was the last time he cut loose and won Pakistan a match......

Never...

Well then its time that you and Babar accepted that responsibility and won us some matches please especially since you are well aware that the rest are crap.

Babar issue is he plays too many dot balls. Just watch Smith , Root ,and Williamson. They look for singles from ball 1 and pounce on loose balls.

I am not worried about Babar power game. That may never come but strike rotation shouldn't be beyond on him.

Our middle order is pathetic. These 2 are carrying our batting line up.

Look beyond the vendetta. Who would replace him? Abid Ali? lol

Indeed but we're going to be playing more T20s than ODIs after the World Cup anyway.

Think he is taking this a bit too seriously!

PCB Media should step in and advise him about what he should be saying to the media.

He's not wrong, as soon as he got out yesterday our collapse started.

Agree with every word he said. He and Babar are the most important batsmen in the line up. Amir and Shadab in bowling department similarly.

He is not entirely wrong. Asif and Malik are hogging spots as passengers. Hasan ali is doing what Asif should do.

I really don't understand why Imam gets so much criticism. I wonder if he would have got any criticism had he not been related to Inzi. Imam appears to anchor the innings and yes he should rotate the strike more regular but I feel Pakistan would have folded very quickly had he not played sensibly. TBH Pakistan should have won the game. The whole team needs to be overhauled after this dismal world cup campaign.

Correct.

I criticize Imam for his lack of cricketing strokes, but we can't deny the fact he's one of our more reliable batters.

Babar, Hafeez and Haris are obviously the best, Imam is also a reliable one.

The rest are with not only a low IQ, but very limited in batting ability. Clown-batting, and never confident enough.

It's criminal to drop Haris Sohail as well.

Bhai Imam ap rehne hi dein.... your days are accounted for anyway as soon as chachu leaves your position in the side will not be guaranteed and soon after you will get the boot.

So Imam is not good.

But Sarfraz with his hand gestures and shouting (though lately he has had nothing to shout about and resigned to his fate) , inability to hit a boundary and get the best out of 11 players is a great personality and great for Pakistan.

Someone going at a strike rate of 75 chasing 307 is not playing for the team ... simple his done it too many times takea risk aftee scoring his 50

He right the rest of them are garbage expect when Fakhar when he plays well.

Problem with Harris coming in for Malik is then you have 3 fairly moderate SR players in Imam babar and Harris

Sarfaraz at 6 is useless

I was there to watch it live.

Imam batted well. Looked fairly comfortable against a very good attack.

Babar looked like he was having a net that's how comfortable he looked. But in the end threw his wicket away.

What a cocky and arrogant person he is. His batting average is highly inflated, I won't be surprised if it crashes down to 40 or below soon.

Hafeez can play at 6. Atleast haris will make double digits unlike malik and won't drop catches like asif ali.

i agree completely with him...you have players like Fakhar and Asif who are hacks!!..Then like hafeez and malik who are literally passengers!!! whats left ???

I do like confidence and they both are kids misbah and younis khan never flourished until when they were 30s and that is a fact..no doubt they have a lot on their shoulders unfortunately

He wasn't there when we won the CT. This team is heavily dependent on Fakhar, who is a clutch batsman, no one else comes close.

Somehow it feels that he owns/ runs this batting lineup.

A bit of arrogance in the statement. Also when team depends on you , shouldn't you be batting with a better SR?

Bhai Imam ap rehne hi dein.... your days are accounted for anyway as soon as chachu leaves your position in the side will not be guaranteed and soon after you will get the boot.

I think you wanted to say your days are counted for but even that would've been incorrect. What you should have said instead was "your days are numbered".

Although he's not completely wrong, I've always been saying Imam and Babar are the spines of this batting lineup. But this is too much self-praise and hopefully it doesn't get to his head.

Pakistans batting is dependant on someone deadbatting everything in an era where most batsmen are scoring at more than a run a ball. Looks like imam will replace hafeez/malik as symbol of mediocre performer in team for next 10+ years.

Cockyness comes from fact hes knows even if he doesnt perform he wont be dropped as hes a special selection. He will get his free ride in the team.

Having imam in team wud be like england still using alistair cook in there odi team. Modern era doesnt need anchors or the new ball been blunted.

That's because England have a plethora of talent and have incredible bench strength.

You can't say the same about Pakistan.

He averages 57 in International Cricket, no way is he getting dropped nor should he be getting dropped

Pakistan can't play madarn cricket if they can barely last 25 overs.

Video would have been good of this quote from Imam to gauge the context and tone.

Why can't people read this as him taking RESPONSIBILITY for what happened.
I KNOW .... BECAUAE YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT LIKE THAT

Yeh, let the bat do the talking.

Haters will always hate. The other day Kohli was asked a question about Ribada who called him immature. Kohli responded by saying he wasnt aware. Just showed how much switch off Kohli is as far as what is in the media about him. This is a big lesson for any sportsman who wants to succeed and a big lesson for Imam too.

Unlike YK, at least Imam has performances to back up his ego.

Younis is one of the best test batsmen in history from Pakistan Imam is riding on 3 hundreds against Zimbabwe which have made him a cocky arrogant all time great already in his mind.

He and Hafeez really gave us a good chance yesterday, but sadly we lost wickets just when we appeared to be on track. We are heavily reliant on our top 3, as the lower order is pretty weak, that's why we were bound to struggle after Fakhar threw his wicket away without contributing at all, whereas Babar didn't make his start count.

Eventually, Imam also fell to a soft dismissal just when it looked like he was going to be the one out of our top 3 to stand up, take responsibility, make a substantial contribution and come through in a 300+ chase. I thought he showed the most fight out of our top 3, which is clearly the core of our batting lineup, but couldn't make it count. Promising signs in a high-pressure chase against a top side, but he also needs to learn from his mistakes.

Imam reminds me of Moeen Ali
Cricketing family runs in his blood
Hopefully will do even better nex game

Imam's batting style will never allow pak to win games against the top teams, due to his poor strike rate, it will require someone like hafeez to come in and bat at 130 sr, to make up for imam's inning, for pak to have a chance to win.
If imam is the last bat, then his innings will not win the game for pak, but only minimize the size of the defeat.

Agree with you.

Im getting tired of criticism he and babar get from idiotic ppers. Sorry but they are the two best batsmen in the team. Nobody can do a better job. We hear names like rizwan bandied about, oh bhai , he had a chance and he didnt exactly shower himself with glory. Who else is there? Umar Akmal? really? anybody who mentions him again needs to look in the mirror and wonder what they will be doing in future, because if you think he is a cricketer and your thought process on this issue mirrors other issues you have no chance in life. None..zero..you will remain stupid..

Coming onto the chachu stuff. Nonsense. Name me a player better than him. nd dont give me this bakwaas that the team relies on fakhar. yes we rely on him to give us good starts but imam and babar are its core..if they fail to go beyond 50 we tend to fall short of a good score. Malik has been rubbish since 2004..he is a fraud..a conman who has managed to hoodwink his way through..Asif just lost his daughter and needs to be dropped. he is not mentally fit at the moment. But we dont talk about mental illness in pakistan as its an ego issue.

Yay selector bakwaas chachu bakwaas bund kuro. If you cant suggest "viable" alternatives then shut up..

:)) the usual "name viable" better options excuses in full force..

such pathetic mindset is reason hafeez, malik are still in ODI team and asad/azhar etc.. are still in test team.

Other players arent given a proper go, we persist with failures or nepotism selections etc.. in the team, this is reason pakistan will remain a mediocre international side.

Younis is one of the best test batsmen in history from Pakistan Imam is riding on 3 hundreds against Zimbabwe which have made him a cocky arrogant all time great already in his mind.

If Imam didn't score those hundreds then your excuse would be "oh he couldn't even score against Zimbabwe"

I like the way you conveniently ignore how Imam was the MOTS in the South African series.

Give me your next excuse?

Imam is going to get seriously hurt with his limited technique against the rising delivery & uncle will be responsible.

Sharjeel & imam are both crooks one sold his team for a bit of $$ the other got fast tracked by his uncle where as he is not good enough to be in a sunday league team with a s/r of 75 in this day & age.

Rather have the crook sharjeel in the team.

Imam fans saying that without Imam Pak wouldn't even score 150 brings me back memories of Misbah era where his fans would justify 70SR innings giving the same excuse after Pakistan failed to reach a target for the umteenth time.

There is no place in this day and age for openers to be batting at 70 SR. Go browse every other team and see if they have an opener that bats at 70 SR. I'll wait.

Also a lot is made of Fakhar's "hacking" but have you ever wondered maybe he is getting desperate due to lack of strike rotation by Imam? Last match after two overs Imam was 1(11) and Fakhar was 0(1). The start of the 3rd over Fakhar blocked one and then flailed at the next one getting a top edge, getting dismissed at 0(3) having just faced 3 balls in 3 overs. Now you think had Fakhar been getting the strike regularly he would have been so desperate to dispatch it to the fence?

This team cannot progress till we have chachu ki rani opening the batting for us.

Imam is a mentally strong person. Didn't believe in his abilities when he was piling up runs against Zimbabwe but he had proved many people wrong. Middle order will look much better with Harris Sohail back.
