Immigration: No visas for low-skilled workers, government says

FRom that article:

What about lower-paid sectors?

The government said it would not introduce a route for lower-skilled/lower-paid workers, urging businesses to "adapt and adjust" to the end of free movement between EU countries and the UK.

Instead, it said the 3.2 million EU citizens who have applied to stay in the UK could help meet labour demands.

But bodies representing farming, catering and nursing are warning that it will be hard to recruit staff under the new system.

The Royal College of Nursing said the proposals would "not meet the health and care needs of the population".

National Farmers' Union president Minette Batters raised "serious concerns" about the "failure to recognise British food and farming's needs".

And the Food and Drink Federation spoke of concerns about bakers, meat processors and workers making food like cheese and pasta not qualifying under the new system.

However, the government pointed to a quadrupling of the scheme for seasonal workers in agriculture to 10,000, as well as "youth mobility arrangements", allowing 20,000 young people to come to the UK each year.

Maybe Priti Patel will roll her sleeves up and do some apple picking in the summer to help British farmers out.

Listening on the radio how a young English lady working in hospitality and barely earns £20k is not considered a skilled worker... she leads a team comprised largely of employees from Europe and around the world...

When asked why do they not employ local Brits she said because 99.9pct of applicants are from outside of the UK and that the English just don’t want these low paid jobs...

Here’s the irony, she lives and works in a town that voted to exit

I expect that there will be compromises with regard to nurses. Likely they will be squeezed in as a shortage profession. Actually, according to the points system, they will qualify if the starting salary for the job is above £25,600. It's the low-skilled HCA (health care assistants) posts that will go unfilled leading to a lot of elderly care homes, nursing homes and hospitals in the districts suffering severe staffing shortages or even closing.

As for agriculture, I will experience a not inconsiderable degree of schadenfreude as the fruit & veg start to rot in fields of those counties that overwhelmingly voted to leave.

They're gonna have to pay for the consequences of their decision now

Great move. UK right now needs scientists, doctors, Engineers,Professors. These are the immigrants who aid in nation building and a better society than the type of immigrants who only see world from a religious prism. They add no value. They can stay where they are.

Great move,Hatsoff to Priti Patel.

Watch wages go up and companies go bust.
For the hard pressed elderly, care homes will be out of reach.

The whole fruit farming and care home industries were built around European immigration.

Almost 4 years on and I am yet o be convinced that leaving was the right thing to do.

Only a prized plonker would say what you just said.

Use a brain cell and explain how your so called scientists, doctors, engineers and professors were being kept out in the first place????? These highly skilled professionals will go where the money is right and where the top universities are and London/England has always attracted these people.

He's a lost cause now

Well, those doctors, engineers and professors will need nurses and care home workers as well. Not to mention, plumbers, builders, carpenters, and farm labourers. Otherwise we could end up like a third world dump where nobody wants to do the dirty work and you have open sewage in the streets.

Those people who look at the world "from a religious prism" are the ones who do the natives' dirty work so think twice before you speak

So what’s your point? A points system opens up
more pathways to such folk. How is that bad? More is good in this case.

Chain migration based on lineage, Family based or whatever (not pointing to any demographic) only gives opportunities for a lot of bad apples to get through. A lot of bad apples have already gotten through based on the kind of news that comes out of Britain these days.

This is a step in the right direction.

You're talking nonsense and I haven't got the time or the inclination to have a discussion with someone who either has no idea what he is talking about or is hiding some other agenda.

Irony is he is UK based going off his comments in the Debbie Abrahams thread. A loyal Brit who hero worships a religious bigot called Amit Shah. Somewhat ironic given his comments about religious tinge earlier in the thread.

Crazy isn't it?
The guy is a disgrace and his religious comment was actually racist.

Priti Patel is an evil witch. How she is even allowed to a politician baffles me when she was caught having unauthorised meetings with Israel. She was lucky that was only dismissed IMO and should have been prosecuted.

It may be surprising for some but many (infact most) native British people earn a living thats close to this salary threshold of 30k £ per anum. The other day i was travelling in London tube and there was an advert for Metropolitan police recruitment with salaries starting from 28-30k

This is meagre in a city like London and will only allow bare survival. Even white collar jobs like teaching etc isnt any better. Most people in the UK only survive due to the social system in place.

I don’t know where you got the loyal Brit part but there is a whole world out there outside of Britain.

As a guy who is a beneficiary of an immigration policy where skillsets and the criteria of being a good citizen is valued, I totally agree with this.

For your benefit being a good citizen means, paying your taxes, staying out of trouble and in agreement with the constitution of the country where I am living.

My culture, religion, cuisine, mother tounge etc are of course important to me but as long as they don’t interfere with the above mentioned criteria I don’t see a problem.

Not integrating has nothing to with education levels and income, working class Hispanics are much better integrated in America and liked by most people compared to "high skilled" indians with graduate degrees.

Why is that for my benefit? Are you saying only Indian immigrants are capable of doing those things? You don't need to tell me how to be a good citizen, I'm obviously a better one than you just by dint of not having a but but ding ding accent.

She can in life radio this morning and said that 8m people from between the ages of 16 to 60 are out of work and companies can develop their skills and utilise them.

What a complete numpty... how can a minister be allowed to spout such rubbish?!

Firstly 2 million are students, then you have 1.5m who retired early, another couple of million who are disabled and many who just don’t want to bath old people or sweep the streets...

I suppose Priti could persuade Boris to abolish welfare benefits. Then the native Brits would have to get off their backsides and unblock the drains of high flying Indian immigrant toilets.

The average salary in London is £36K, while for whole Uk it is £29K. However, even on 36K it would be pretty much impossible to live anywhere in inner london unless you flat-share.
The threshold salary in order to get 20 points for immigration visa is £25,600.

Sure I have an accent a thick Indian one at that, but thank god my education and professional skills have enough value to compensate for that.

What’s the point of having an attractive accent if it adds no value rather a nuisance value

Looks like the irony of mocking an immigrant accent is lost on an outstanding citizen such as yourself lol

Priti Patel won't be "persuading" anybody. She is vicious but stupid - that's why Dom Cummings has placed her in the home office; so she can do what she is told by her masters. And then take the rap when things fall apart as a result of these moronic policies.

£30K starting salary is not meager considering the benefits police officers receive.

Not to mention building walls to hide slums!

A radio host just exposed how her parents wouldn't even be here under her proposed changes, ergo she herself wouldn't be either.

Not seen a worst minister than PeePee in a long time.

What benefits? A free london travel card?

Cost of everything has sky rocketed in last 3-4 years. 30k £ is not enough esp. in London.

London allowance.
Upto £4K per annum tax free I think... not entirely sure though

^^^
Also we’ve had low inflation and stagnant house prices since 2016, that’s almost four years.
So although house prices are out of reach for most, the actually cost of living including rent has remains stagnant.

Won’t be long though before cost of living starts to go up

Racist PM doesn't want immigrants who cant speak English and to keep his far right mates happy.

This will hurt the UK badly.

Low inflation? Check your grocery shopping again. My weekly trip to morissons cost a little fortune more now. So does a full tank of fuel.

Also today in news they were saying that House prices are on the rise again. Previously the housing market may ve been stagnant due to Brexshit uncertainty.

I’m not saying it hasn’t gone up but it’s at a very low pace.
Rents have certainly stagnated...

Anyway, it could get a whole lot worse now that Brexit is in its final throw...

We’re literally standing in the edge of a cliff....

Such a weak argument. The immigration rules were different back in the day. The UK invited citizens from the Commonwealth to settle in the UK - this after WW2.

Time have changed now, and if you or the radio host know anything about the UK, it is the law in this country works on precedence.

Go ask a UK born citizen who is married to a non-UK (non-EU) spouse. British born citizens must prove they are not a burden to society when their spouse settles by providing evidence of income etc. Go ask a non-EU citizen what they have to provide just to settle in the UK for work.

The new immigration laws are not a touch on non-EU immigration laws. It's just the remoaners like to think the UK government have propped up new immigration laws since Brexit. Wrong, these laws have always been in place except now the law is extended to EU nationals.

My message : deal with it EU citizens, every other non-EU citizen has had to.

The way inflation is calculated is flawed. Mortgage/rent payments used to be included; but these have long since been removed when measuring inflation.

Factor in the cost of rent/mortgages and we are looking a double-digit inflation growth which means rates would be much higher.

We were already off a cliff, long before Brexit.

You, I, and almost everyone I know in London, know for a fact London is a bubble and it will burst.

There is a reason why more and more Londoners are bailing and shifting outside of London, towards the North.

I was born and raised in London for almost 50 years, and I can safely say London has become a cesspit.

Every country needs high skilled immigrants. Low skilled immigrants add very little value to the country.

Also, most western nations already have enough bumpkins to do low paid menial jobs.

Exactly. I mean immigration policies are not based around how many plumbers, carpenters or gardeners a country needs. No disrespect to those professions but what they need is top notch educators, scientists ,a lot of doctors, entrepreneurs and engineers to prop up the infrastructure, education, economy, scientific development and healthcare systems.

There are various ways to source and get people for labor jobs, you don’t need to start issuing green cards for it.

The Arab countries in fact don’t even let anyone become citizens unless you are an ethnic arab. Obviously claiming ancestry from invaders doesn’t count. There are a lot of laborers from the sub continent who make a living there. For the other top of the chain professionals they pay top $ even though the no citizenship policy applies to them as well.

You are assuming all religious people are uneducated which is not the case.

There are many religious people who are doctors, engineers, lawyers etc.

Of course they are. What makes you think I am against religion, that includes Islam?

However yes I do have a problem against uneducated super-religious types who add no value, live off of welfare, create nuisance value and are easily prone to radical activities. These types have been a menace pretty much everywhere in the world so even if it were a honest blue collar guy unfortunately he will have to face the brunt in the interest of national security this is the right policy.

This lady has the guts to make unpopular changes for the long term benefit. The world needs more of these rather than the usual in action and unnecessary pandering

What's the Indians hating on low skilled workers?
Don't forget your people are slaving away in the UAE for the sheikhs too

Rather than developing and encouraging its own people (esp. young generation) British government is coming out with another point based immigration system. That too with a Salary threshold of 25,600£
At this low pay scale, i wonder what kind of ‘skilled’ migrants they will attract. This will flood the market with cheap labour in mid level professional jobs but i dont really see it attracting the brightest minds. Do we need that kind of immigration? (when the British middle class is already squeezed).

In Uk there are plenty of Universities producing 1000s of local graduates every year but no jobs for these young people. There is not much industry left either, so not sure what kind of future the British government is planning for its own people?

Without proper investment in research, infrastructure and fundamental overhaul of Britain’s economy, i dont see a bright future for the country.

Not just indians but there are a lot of blue collar workers from the Subcontinent and the sheiks have found a way to make it work without an immigration system in place for non residents

However they are not a democracy or a country built on immigrants so they can pay top $$$ to the best brains out there.

The west needs the brains to sustain what they have built, so they need top of the chain professionals.

I mean anyone can claim to be a blue collar worker and get in a visa but no one can lie about being a doctor or a PhD in say economics. That’s why allowing anyone into the country is a security risk.

I am not hating on them and don’t think what they do is easy but it is just easier to allow qualified professionals.

There are plenty of uneducated non religious types who add no value, leech on the system, and our prone to radical activities. Check out how many homicides are committed by gang members here in US. Not fair to blame "religious types" only. IN fact these non religious types, who are in gangs have killed way more than the religious types ever have.

London, for me, continues to be the finest , most diverse & exciting city in the world. The only challenger is NY. If you really imagine London to be a cesspit them I fear your horizons are extremely narrow.
Having said that, we have, sadly, sold up here and moved to Edinburgh to be near our only child for half the year. The rest of the year - the cold, dark & miserable half of it , we will be living in warmer, sunnier parts. Thus, we have fulfilled the promise we made to ourselves & left Brexitard little england behind to open a new chapter in our lives.

And I am not a little surprised to see you defending the vicious, Modi - loving, (not-so Pritti) Patel, an utter imbecile who is totally unfit for any sort of work that might require intelligence, thought or a sense of humanity; let alone such an high office of state.

When was the last time you lived in London? The train/tube performances are some of the worst and most expensive in the world. Areas from Waterloo to Mayfair are riddled with homeless people. Oh the houses are built like lego brick sets; minimal concrete and the rest made of partitions and gypsum boards. Retail stores closing left right and centre only to be replaced with either a pound store or coffee shop. Then there's crime, drop in quality of education (more children per class), and of course the cost of living and stress on the NHS. I could go on and on.

Yeah London is diverse no doubt but don't judge a city based on a Zone 1 to 6 travelcard use.

As for being a fan of Priti Patel. I actually don't care. You need to wipe your tears and realise the so called immigration laws announced this week are simply an extension of existing immigration laws, in that what was applicable to non-EU, is now applicable to EU citizens.

A fair and just immigration policy applicable to all people from all countries. You of all people should be supporting equality! :)

Why are they giving extra points for PhD but not for Masters or even Bachelors? If they are giving 20 points for PhDs, the least they could do is give 10 points for masters.

Lived in london from 1966 till spring last year.

Homeless people numbers have risen in every large city due to tory economic policies and will get worse. They are (mostly) the victims of our conscienceless society - and using terms like riddled (infested - according to Mr Trump) or cesspit is a typical right-wing attempt at demonisation.

The education provided by the state schools in London (especially in areas with high immigrant numbers) significantly outstrip that provided in the sticks - inspite of large classes. My own son went to a fantastic one in Lewisham and moved onto Edinburgh Uni to study STEM.

I personally know how stressed the NHS is everywhere - again deliberate tory policy to drive privatisation. Despite that the finest hospitals in the country are the 6 - 7 great University hospitals in central London (Hammersmith, UCL, St Thomas', Kings' etc). If I wasn't living right next to Edinburgh Royal infirmary, I would get myself admitted to Kings' or Tommy's - by hook or crook -if I had a serious condition.

Retail stores are closing because of internet shopping everywhere.

But yes, London is very expensive.

I'm no economist, but I have read plenty that London generates 22 percent of the whole of the UK economy. you can call it a cesspit if you like, but you can't argue with the figures. You have to work damn hard in London to make it worthwhile, those who move out of the city tend to be the more well off who can afford the sky high prices of outer London.

I admit I'm not a fan of the city itself, unless I am just doing a trip there, but I'm still glad it's there. It's a fantastic place to spend a few days if only due to the diversity and buzz of the place. I can't imagine what it would look like if you stripped out all the foreigners who make up a large part of the workforce.

I am not arguing with the numbers, but London is a rat race, and if you are looking for quality of life, then London is not it. IMO of course!

Mass Immigration means more votes for Left and Far Left political parties. It happens all around the world.

Anyone who opposes brainless mass immigration is a racist. This is one of the primary reasons why I do not like Left politics anymore. They have gone bonkers in the past couple of decades.

True as Indians and Indian immigrants who mostly go through immigration as skilled professionals we can appreciate such policies where merit is honored.

Mass immigration happens from mostly war torn areas like Syria,Iraq etc or for persecuted minorities and ethnic groups in radical countries.

The former category vote on merit or have a logic behind whom the pick and the latter purely on emotion, so they are usually easy to manipulate for the left parties by throwing them a bone.

Most mass Indian immigration abroad was not skilled professionals, that is a relatively new concept. Certainly the majority of the Indian immigrants to Britain came with few qualifications, and like Pakistanis and Bangladeshis usually started businesses, or saved up until they could.

Indian emigrants have a history of finding their way into every corner of the world, from England to the West Indies, that all happened far before the current move towards the points system. FYI, there will be plenty of professionals from countries beyond India who are already qualifying for the same jobs ( engineering and accounting) Indians will be competing for. I already mentioned in a previous thread that three members of my cousin's family in Pakistan have done just that, one is already in the US, another is headed there, and the third one has been here for three years.

Top firms generally want the best talent, they aren't simple minded enough to limit their potential according to tabloid headlines.

Now i understand why Indians are FOUR times more likely to vote for the tories than ANY other ethnic minority

Judge by his posts that what actually is the mental calibre of these ‘highly skilled’ Indians!
They are very skilled in ‘working the system’ with every possible loophole, one can think of. Notorious for H1B fraud and will Try to do the same with UK points system. Some indeed are good & competent individuals but the vast majority is dubious.

Pritti Patel must be aware of all this but still trying to open the gates for high skilled Professionals, valued at 25k £ threshold.

Indians are like the human form of Sunshine. They bring light and happiness wherever they go. Hope others learn from us and try to be like us.

They learned a long time ago. Cab drivers have moved on from Pakistanis to east Europeans and Africans who don't understand a word of English but know how to use Google maps. Tomorrow their kids will be the professionals to follow the road of rags to riches.
