Often times you'll see that there are negative views on immortality, that it's against nature, the natural process of life, that you'll see all your loved ones die, and always have a hole inside of you. That you'll just end up as a cold person wishing for death to swallow you whole.

But what if...

Hypothetically, if you became immortal, there would be more to life than loving other people, if you put love aside there is a whole new aspect to living thousands of years that you'd see.

Now imagine living to see the first planets colonized, seeing our first contact with Aliens, seeing if your favourite cricket team will ever rule like the Aussies or West Indies one did, heck if cricket is even alive, seeing new technology, progresses in medicine.

And from there my fear takes over. I do not want to die because I want to experience all of those things. None of us will ever get to experience those things.

As a wise man once said: "we were born too late to explore the Earth, and too early to explore space"

Immortality can be achieved through your legacy and what you leave to this earth. It can be the values you teach your kids, your career achievements or contributions to society.

In cricket, Don Bradman died 16 years ago but here we are still talking about him. Richie Benaud and Tony Cozier died recently but people still copy their mannerisms and remember their voice. In the field of politics, you can look at Jinnah who died 69 years ago yet we still discuss his life and what he stood for. Edhi built a long-lasting organisation that'll forever be associated with his name.

Now obviously not many of us will reach those heights. But you can still be remembered by people for serving your community or a cause you care about.

Humanity is like a relay race, we run our bit of the course before passing on the baton from one generation to another while we have our enternal rest. Just try to have a good time while you're still here.

If everyone will be immortal then no one will be

(think about it for a second)

If everyone is immortal then everyone is immortal... Big fail on your part trying to sound deep...

I didn't expect a people like you to have the requisite brain power to understand what I meant. If everyone is immortal, then their children will be immortal too and so on and so forth. Meaning the human population will explode and the per capita resources will diminish. The world is already unable to sustain the present human population and if everyone is immortal the human population will have multiple fold increase. Global warming will go in hyper drive and eventually Earth will not remain fit for human occupation.

Yes that’s why people in West don’t have enough kids and people in east have 10 kids despite living for 50 years.... Not to mention you obviously don’t understand difference between immortal and invulnerable...

According to ancient chinese believes a lack of sexual activity is the key to long life, youthfulness and possibly immortality. So there you have it guys, the answer to the age old quest and it's simple!

I rather chose mortality over such an immortality.

I've been immoral for as long as I can remember, and I plan on continuing to be so until the day I die.

The examples you gave all put me in a mere spectator position. A passive bystander cheering on as things around him unfold. It didn't convince me to long for immortality.

Instead of longing for immortality just so that I might witness all the great achievements of mankind, I would rather do something productive to the best of my capabilities that might help humanity to progress in whatever field I am working in, no matter how minuscule my contributions might be.

You are fascinated by space travel and space in general? Me too. Unlike you I am not at all saddened by the fact that I might not get to witness the colonizing of Mars, even though I am pretty young and who knows perhaps I might end up buying a property on Mars in next 20 years. Still I am not all too hyped up about the end goal.

Who am I kidding? I would love to shake an Aliens hand, if they have one. But instead of getting depressed over missing out on the good stuff I am more focused on understanding the way we might get to the end goal.

Instead of hoping to witness us colonizing other planets, I try to look up at the current progress and read about it. I try to understand why it is taking so long and what issues are holding us back. Instead of hoping for the end goal I focus on the process and find it much more fulfilling.

I am not an expert on space or anything but just reading about it, thinking about it and trying to come up with my own answers to the problems in what ever way I can, gives me so much satisfaction that I don't care about immortality. I don't care about missing out on first alien contact.

That's what I would suggest you, just focus on the process. See the beauty of it. Try to be part of the process in whatever way you can. Think harder, ask and answer. We are lucky. It's the century of information sharing. All the current information of humanity is just a few finger tips away. There is no secret which only a handful of the privileged have access to. It doesn't even have to be a formal scientific book. Just look up some YouTube videos on the matter. Let the mysteries and challenges of the journey fascinate you. Quantum mechanics, artificial intelligence, robotics there is so much going on to think about and try to make sense of it. So many issues to resolve.

Enjoy the journey for the journey is always much more enjoyable then arriving at the destination.

We the modern people would not have been able to build spacecrafts without the help and selfless contributions of the ancient people. Hence for me it's so beautiful to know and realize that the fruits of our labour might not be ready to harvest in our life time. Just like we could enjoy the fruit of generation before us likewise the seed we are sowing now, the fields we are planting today, their fruits aren't ours to eat, it's for those who will come after us and it's beautiful the way it is. We can't just enjoy the riches of those before us and contribute nothing, we must too leave some riches for those who are to come after us.

There is no need to be depressed, change your perspective and enjoy the journey or you would miss out on the fun part. Existence in itself is beautiful, life on its own is fascinating enough and we don't have to experience all the great things to feel amazing. The time we are living now is the best time.

If we were born earlier at time when there was still much to be discovered on Earth. We would have been most probably some peasants working for some privileged landlord who hadn't seen anything outside of our town and died an early death. It would not have been some fantasy world where we all would have been some adventurers setting sail to any part of the world and discover the earth.

For me the glass is always half full and I am content with it.

Haha, dude wrong thread!

Being immoral and being immortal are two different things.

Immortality implies living forever!, and not just thousands, or millions, or billions of years.

Additionally,

First of all, unless the process of aging is also suspended/stopped, who wants to end up having a 500, or a 5000, or a 50,000 year old body? (And if it is stopped/suspended, at what age? Teenage? in your 20's? 30's?)

Secondly, close your eyes for a moment and mentally envisage infinity. Immortality means living for infinity. What a horrible thought. Worse than even the concept of living forever in heaven or hell.

Having a body that old would kinda defeat the purpose because then you wouldn't be able to see or comprehend anything. Was thinking your current state.

Someone 30+ will probably want the body they had in their mid 20's. Whilst someone in their 20's may think that their likely looks in their early 30's (ie still relatively young, but with a touch of maturity) would be more preferable. As for someone in their teens, or 40+, "your current state" may not be that attractive considering the aforementioned alternatives. :trump

Haha, dude wrong thread!

Being immoral and being immortal are two different things.

Oh.

So you're saying there is an immorality thread? Could you bump it? I need to post on it. Thanks!

I find it quite depressing that when Mankind will gain enough knowledge to explore space, make human civilization exists on other planets, or even come out with new technology, i wont be there.

Or the fact that Pakistan ends up becoming a liberal open minded country.

But the problem with immortality is that even you suffer from depression, then life could be hard. Its not that easy to stay happy all the time, thus, Death is needed

Whats interesting to see is that many in this thread think death is needed, which makes you question (if you believe in heaven) that what would life in heaven be like.
Syed1 points out the economic problems that could be faced, wont such problems exist in Heaven?

Reminds me of the book Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice on which the Tom Cruise & Brad Pitt movie was based. The vampire Louis who is being interviewed after living for over 200 years has become tired of immortality and of all the pain and suffering to which he had to bear witness. The loneliness and suffering of that character through the ages is so mournful and chilling and has been written so beautifully. All my childhood desires to live forever took a back seat after reading that novel.

Also, the ending scene in the movie The Green Mile, where the Tom Hanks character has been granted immortality by John Coffey along with the mice is quite heart-rending as well. Watching all his friends and loved ones die while he still lives takes a toll on him. Another poignant example of the pitfalls of immortality.

Pretty much this. Less cliche version of life is too short.

Now imagine being diagnosed with ALS or being cut into half in an accident or falling in a deep well far away from civilization. How would immorality feel then?

This post rings a bell to this video I watched recently:
