Misbah Ul Haq in todays media release

Head coach Misbah-ul-Haq: “I want to compliment my players and the management team for their patience, sacrifices and the hardships they have endured to ensure they not only lead the safe resumption of international cricket during the Covid-19 pandemic since the series in England but also try to give their best every time they step on the field.

“Top professional athletes require a certain environment to prepare so that they can perform at the minimum expected levels every time they represent their countries. While we completely respect and understand the New Zealand Government Laws, which have been put in place for the health and safety of their public, there is no denying the fact that the implementation of certain regulations has affected our athletes, both mentally and physically prior to an international series.

Seems an attack on NZC and Health ministry - not sure how well this will go down with the hosts

Bit of a response to NZC and their Health Ministry I guess.

I still feel PCB and some of the testing and the protocols back in Pakistan were partly at fault.

I hear PCB are looking into what went wrong....let's see what that reveals.

Blaming NZL for your own mismanagement , and finding excuses for your preemptive failure on the tour, due to ridiculous selection. You better change the name of emerging players squad from "Sheheen" to " Gidhs' (vulturs) where oldies snatching opportunities from the youngsters.

Had they consulted any qualified doctor in Pakistan prior to leaving for NZL, this corona 19 mess team is going through could have been better handled . But I doubt they did . Is Misbah now being paid for the team doctor also ?

If this is an attack on NZC/ NZ health ministry, it's very weak. Not the least because if you re-read the wording, he's even not up to making a direct counter charge.

Well he cant say anything too direct, but what else could :

"there is no denying the fact that the implementation of certain regulations has affected our athletes, both mentally and physically prior to an international series."

mean?

I might be wrong, but it’s a fairly innocent statement, no? Lots of players and coaches around the world have made similar statements about how the bubbles have taken a mental and physical toll. I suppose it depends on whether he puts emphasis on the “implementation” part of the sentence.

If they had followed the protocol they would have been training by now. Instead of NZ government, who are doing there job, they should look at the idiots who booked commerical flights and then those who were found breaching protocols on arrival.

This is beyond stupid. If you are taking commerical flights, even more so than before you should follow the rules and isolate untill the results come it. Whoever is in charge of the whole sqaud and then the people handling the covid department also need to asked a few questions. The need for isolation should have been explained beyond any doubt.

NZ health people are the ones making sure this tour goes ahead. One transmission event this close to the first match and it's tour over. And can you imagine the embarrassment if our players were somehow responsible for transmitting it to someone in New Zealand?

Could be but this is my understanding

For far too long, Pakistanis have had an inferiority complex and accepted whatever demands have been put on them. About time someone puts on a statement about the mental toll it is taking on the players when the majority of players have tested negatively repeatedly yet have not been given the opportunity to train.

There is no doubt that some Pakistanis breached covid protocols there. That is an issue that should be handled internally by PCB but on the outside, NZ must be told in no uncertain terms that this forced quarantine when majority players have tested negatively repeatedly is not on.

Had the NZers been in Pakistan and were subjected to the same treatment, a ruckus would've been created about the mental wellbeing of their squad.

LAHORE: Former chairman Zaka Ashraf has blasted the current Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) setup for its gross mismanagement which has resulted in the chaotic and troubled situation with the Pakistan team in New Zealand after so many of its players have tested Covid-19 positive there.

“The PCB has the stance the players might have contracted the virus during their travelling from Lahore to Auckland as they were cleared in the local testing process before the departure.

“If it is correct, then the PCB should have been more careful in deciding the travelling plan of the team,” said Zaka in a statement.

“Instead of sending the contingent on direct flights from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Auckland, the PCB selected a route in which the squad stayed at different airports for hours before reaching New Zealand,” Zaka pointed out. “A chartered flight could have been another good solution to avoid any untoward situation in travelling of the squad. I don’t think a chartered flight would have been too expensive for the PCB which is paying millions of rupees salaries to its officials,” Zaka said.

“Are these highly paid officials of the PCB there to create such kind of embarrassment for the Pakistani players due to their unprofessional and irresponsible way of working?” he asked. “The situation is causing no embarrassment for hosts New Zealand but for Pakistan and PCB for its gross mismanagement,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that when Pakistan toured England last summer, the England and Wales Cricket Board had hired chartered flights for Pakistan team and showed professionalism and better management to host three teams one after other, including Pakistan, West Indies and Ireland without any controversy or chaos.

Zaka said that it was not the first time that this cricket board management has made such a blunder and is now desperately going for damage control which exposed their unprofessionalism.

He said all the players and officials should have been tested again after opener Fakhar Zaman was separated from the squad due to fever at the eleventh hour of the departure. “Though the PCB has the claim that Fakhar Zaman was separated from the squad due to fever, a fresh Covid-19 test of the entire squad should have been done, even at the cost of delaying the departure of the team to Auckland,” he contended.

If they went to England on a chartered flight, why not NZ?

Babar more or less said the same thing 2-3 days ago. People find extra reasons to bash Misbah.

Nobody can honestly blame players for succumbing to COVID-19. I just think that it is ridiculous to blame anyone for getting the infection. Protocols are in place for a reason, and they knew the risk when they agreed to this series.

I mean who's bright idea was it to schedule a series when everyone knew there was going to be a COVID surge.

Pakistan knew and should have prepared well for this tour which is very important for the youngsters to put up a good show.

Misbah and his timely staggered statements are just in place when the performances go the way the WI have had so far on tour.

Pakistan has lost 10 days of training to their own refusal to follow the quarantine rules.

Misbah is the team supreme still and its 100% his failure.

So now he is blaming the rules.

This is so bad, not even getting net practice before the series. Misbah has every right to be miffed. I wish that the team channels this anger and injustice into their performance and fights hard when the test series starts.

Quarantine has been lifted they can go out and start training now thankfully!

If they went to England on a chartered flight, why not NZ?

That chartered flight was arranged by ECB, the players who didn't travel with the team at that time due to Covid travelled via normal flights later.

The only foolish & unforgivable act of PCB here is that they made some players(Shaheens) travel on Economy Class while others in Business Class. I really don't get all the hate players are getting, they are certainly not the ones at fault here.

If this is the case shouldnt they be asking for the matches to be delayed by a few days so they have more time to acclimatize and train/practice?

I think they allowing fans to attend they have done that if thier was no fans allowed

Not having full preparation is definitely going to affect us and it is a legitimate excuse . But it is our own fault as we broke protocols.

Need to hit the ground running now - no time to mess about.

Would be great if we can win the T20I series after all that has happened.

I don't think you need much preparation for T20s and some of our players have been playing in PSL anyway .

For a test tour you ideally want some first class matches before the start of the test series. Seems unlikely we will get that in.

We sent 40 players to go play in the times of COVID. Why isn't anyone pointing out this failure?

Did we send 40 people to NZ for a vacation?

Pakistan batsman Shan Masood grateful for cricket tour arrangements in NZ

Pakistan batsman Shan Masood says knowing they had to isolate for only two weeks in New Zealand makes their ongoing cricket tour arrangements far more bearable than when they toured England.

All but one of Pakistan's 53-strong tour party came out of a 14-day managed isolation in Christchurch on Tuesday and headed to Queenstown to prepare for warm-up matches.

In England in June, Pakistan also isolated for 14 days but spent the next six weeks in a bio-secure bubble.

That underlines the difference in levels of Covid-19 infection in New Zealand, where the virus has been controlled and life is practically normal, and England, where the virus is still killing hundreds daily and the country is in tiered lockdowns.

The New Zealand tour of three Twenty20s and two tests starting next week was thrown into doubt when eight of the Pakistan party tested positive for the virus, and some breached the health protocols.

Masood said it was tough for the players to isolate in their hotel rooms, but the players knew once the isolation ended they could ``live like normal people.''

"We collectively accepted this challenge,'' the test opener said in an online video conference on Thursday. "Spending 14 days to yourself, never leaving the room, is not easy, but it's upon the individual to look at everything from a positive slant."

"What helped was knowing that unlike England, there's no bio-secure bubble once we got out of quarantine. So we could live like normal people, and enjoy our life outside of cricket. It was a challenge, but now we're looking ahead."

"We used to talk to each other on video call a lot. We had a little bit of time in fresh air. We just tried to encourage each other to bide the time. The reward we get is not only do we get to play cricket, we also get a normal life away from cricket, and get to roam around freely."

Masood did not believe they will be rusty when the series gets underway.

"What you do for years doesn't disappear in 14 days as a cricketer,'' Masood said.

"There is of course a bit of rustiness. We're professionals and have been playing cricket since the England tour. These two weeks might be a blessing in disguise, in that players might get the extra little bit of rest.''

The test series follows the T20s, starting on Boxing Day. Masood will play in a four-day warm-up match before then.

Misbah speaking to media:

Q: Did Pakistan consider abandoning the tour and going back?

"Look you consider and analyse all aspects of the situation, to see how you can take the team forward, and not just think about playing cricket only"

"You want to give your side the best chance (to perform) and to see how we can prepare best to win the series; These weren't normal situations and circumstances and these weren't ideal scenarios for us"

"As I have said before, as stakeholders of the game, we want cricket to be played; We are doing what we can to make it happen and we are making whatever efforts we can to make this possible, and to make sure cricket happens in New Zealand"

"We sat down and discussed this issue amongst ourselves and also spoke with the Chairman and CE but came to the conclusion that since we have invested so much time by coming for this tour, we will continue the tour and play the best cricket we can; So here we are and I am hopeful that we will play good cricket and do well here"

Auckland [New Zealand], December 11 (ANI): Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq feels his players were "unlucky" to have contracted the coronavirus during their stay in Christchurch and said that the quarantine protocols breaches were "unintentional".

Seven members of the Pakistan touring squad tested positive for coronavirus days after their arrival in New Zealand on November 24.

The former Pakistan skipper admitted that the precautionary COVID guidelines were strict and expressed disappointment in not being able to practice in the last 14 days.

"Due to COVID, rules are very strict in New Zealand and we respect that. And now we have moved out of quarantine after spending 14 days in isolation. We were not able to practice in the last 14 days," Misbah said during a virtual press conference on Friday.

"I think we were a bit unlucky in this regard that we couldn't practice after three days and lost a lot of time due to coronavirus cases but now we are back on the field," he added.

The Pakistan squad was also given a "final warning" by the New Zealand government after some of its players had breached the quarantine protocols.

The Pakistan coach said the breaches were unintentional and called for making up for the time that the touring party has lost due to the coronavirus cases within the camp.

"The breaches were unintentional in the first day and it happened moving luggage here and there. It was a weird situation and New Zealand clarified afterward that Pakistan had followed protocols but never the less the main point is we couldn't practice due to the positive results those 14 days," Misbah said.

"Now we are out of quarantine and trying to make up for the time lost. It's tough to do a work of three weeks in seven days but we are trying to give our best. Want to be in the best shape before December 18 in Auckland," he added.

Pakistan is slated to play three T20Is against New Zealand of which the first game is on December 18 while the ICC World Test Championship fixtures will be held in Mount Maunganui and Christchurch on December 26-30 and January 3-7, respectively.

Pakistan squad for T20Is: Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Faheem Ashraf, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Hussain Talat, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Musa Khan, Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Qadir, and Wahab Riaz. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan considered abandoning its cricket tour of New Zealand while in 14-day quarantine and coach Misbah-ul-Haq says they opted to stay for their fans.

Pakistan made a rocky start to managed isolation when eight of the 53-strong tour party tested positive for the coronavirus upon arrival and, on the first day, players breached the strict health protocols by mingling in corridors and sharing food.

The team was stripped of its allowance to train, issued with a final warning by the New Zealand government and risked being expelled from the country. But there were no more breaches.

“We did discuss (pulling out of the tour) but then finally decided to say no to this option because when you invest this much time on this, then you have got to give it a shot,” Misbah said in an online news conference on Friday.

“Coping in the (COVID-19) situation isn’t easy for anyone, but if we want to keep the game alive and keep it going we have to make this sacrifice for fans sitting at home who want to watch the game and get entertained in this difficult time.”

Pakistan came out of quarantine on Tuesday and players and moved from Christchurch to the resort town o of Queenstown to begin preparing for the first of three Twenty20s against New Zealand next Friday.

Misbah said the time in isolation will not be an excuse if results don’t go their way in the T20s and the two test matches.

“As professionals we are not looking for excuses, because at the end of the day, no matter whatever excuse you make, people consider end results,” he said. “Whatever happened, we can’t do much about it.

“What we can control is catching up with every minute and every moment we couldn’t get in those 14 days.

“You think about how many days we need to prepare, how we are going to prepare, how to lift your team. Obviously these aren’t normal circumstances, what happens here isn’t ideal. But then for the sake of international cricket you want cricket to go on, and being a big stakeholder, we will give our full effort to help cricket overall.”

Misbah believed Pakistan has the pace to match the likes of New Zealand seamers Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult.

“Shaheen (Afridi) and Wahab (Riaz) are quite experienced now. Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain are also progressing with every series so they all are getting into the groove,” Misbah said. “They have the skills, potential, pace and swing -- this package can surprise anyone.

“If New Zealand have Ferguson as their main pacer who clocked around 150 kph, then we have three to four fast bowlers with a similar knack. If they think they can challenge us with pace then they also have to face the same challenge as well. New Zealand are a tough side at home and playing well against West Indies, but they will be challenged and you will get to see good cricket.”

I like this comment from Misbah. The right attitude.

Besides, the enforced break will help Pakistanis regain physical strength - particularly the likes of Shaheen Shah, Babar etc. They have been on the go for far too long without rest.

[Reports] PCB considered pulling out of New Zealand tour but chose not to

This is what I am hearing in the news but it seems like saner heads prevailed.. Especially considering NZ May tour Pakistan next year.

Reason being flouted around is mental stress and deprivation from training - until recently.

Oh please mental health from 10 days from isolation :)) that's nothing and so easy.

Anyways glad sanity prevailed. Hopefully the rest will do our players good.

staying in one room for 10 days. You should try it.

If I have a computer and some.video games, yeah I can do it pretty easily lol.

No, you can do that because you know that if you wanted to, you could go to your living room, kitchen etc

When you know you cannot step out of a room then that is a different matter and has psychological consequences.

Pakistan players competed with fatigued bodies and minds: Misbah

Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq is not disappointed with the performance of his team on the ongoing tour of New Zealand, saying his players competed with fatigued body and mind.

Pakistan lost the T20 series before the 101-run defeat in the first Test.

“People have to understand that we have been through a very tough time in New Zealand. After 14-days of total quarantine for the players to still perform like they did in the T20 series and Test match with fatigued bodies and mindset,” Misbah said in an interview.

“There are a lot of positives for us on this tour.”

The former captain stressed that it had been very tough for the players to remain in total quarantine where they couldn’t even exercise properly.

“But the players put all that behind them and had only six days to prepare for the T20 series including the travelling and all. I think we performed competitively in the T20 series and if not for some mistakes at crucial times like our fielding and top order failure we could even have won the T20 series,” Misbah said.

He said injury issues to Babar Azam, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan had also hit the team but it remained competitive.

“The plus points for have been the performance of Rizwan the way he has taken responsibility even as captain and batsman. The way Fawad Alam has come to the front and played so well and the way Faheem Ashraf has come back strongly. These are all positives for us.”

Misbah said he was happy that the team remained competitive and resilient throughout the first test and unluckily lost the match in the final session with a few overs to go.

“If you remember we had also come close to winning a Test in England and now the way we lost the first test in New Zealand, I think it is a matter of time before we can start winning consistently.”

Misbah said the emergence of young players was a big plus for Pakistan cricket and they would all get better with exposure and grooming.

“Players like Abdullah Shafiq, Haider, Khushdil, Hasnain, Haris Rauf etc are a very good lot and some have already performed well but they will only get better with time.”

sorry misbah, you are not captain, you are coach.

These are the statements you can make as a captain, but not as a coach.

Losing T20, no big deal. Losing oneday, not a biggie.

But when we are losing test with you as the coach, than its a problem.

I wonder why India did not come out with such claims after losing first test?

Misbah before t20 series: I will not use the quarantine period as an excuse
Misbah after the series: it's the quarantine that has fatigued the players. it's the quarantine that didn't give enough time to practice. it's the quarantine that has been so hard that we can't win

Unbelievable man this guy.

If the players were unable to train properly for 14 days in isolation, they should have obtained sufficient rest. Fatigue should not be a problem here

While we are not a top team atm by any stretch of the imagination, but what I can guarantee you is that we are not half as bad as we are made to look because of this guy and Waqar.

I wonder why India did not come out with such claims after losing first test?

This is the mentality Misbah brings to the team which explains why we are habitual losers these days. Remember how meekly Misbah conceded defeat to India in the 2015 WC? This is the level of fight that Pakistan have now instilled in all our performances.

Misbah is a career loser, his first instinct is to have an excuse ready

“If you remember we had also come close to winning a Test in England and now the way we lost the first test in New Zealand, I think it is a matter of time before we can start winning consistently.”

Wow, look how he's twisted the narrative to suit him.

An honest man would concede that we bowled and batted absolutely terribly on the whole against NZ and were saved from total scoreboard humiliation by 3 one-off individual performances across two innings.

Then he's bragging because he 'nearly won in England' lol. Again, if Misbah had any self respect he would mention how he failed to prepare the bowlers for Woakes which actually cost us the game from a winning position.

Misbah seems desperate to me tbh. Has no actual successes so needs to add masala to whatever he can scrape from the barrel.

They are much more professional.

To think, a lot of Indians have been away from home and family since August.. constantly living in this bubble... travelled to Aus immediately after a gruelling quarantine and IPL in the desert.. underwent quarantine again and had to endure an extremely packed tour schedule thus far. Losing key players and yet put up with it.

I think Pakistan would do good to learn a thing or two from their neighbours and look at their cricket. This whingeing only makes them look pathetic especially when compared with equally disadvantaged Indians across the ditch

Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq: “We tried to benefit from the resumption of Test cricket in Pakistan by inducting youngsters as they not only bring a fresh breath of air, but are determined to do well. I think we have done well from this aspect as there remains a high level of energy amongst these players despite being unable to carry the momentum following clinical wins against Bangladesh earlier this year and then Zimbabwe in the last quarter of the year.

“We have given opportunities to the youngsters in international cricket as well as with Pakistan Shaheens and I remain confident that the side and the youngsters, including as a few outstanding domestic performers we have earmarked, have a lot of potential to be become future leaders in the sport.

“From a personal point of view, the biggest disappointment of 2020 was the tour of England, where we let victory at Old Trafford slip out of our grasps. Then, rain thwarted our chances of going 1-0 up in the series but I am glad we then bounced back strongly in the third match to level the T20I series.

“New Zealand was slightly different and the 14-day quarantine, where we couldn’t even hold physical training sessions, hampered our Test preparations. That put a lot of pressure on the boys and resulted in a few injuries.

“We won the third T20I, though I feel we could have won one of the opening two matches but lost too many wickets in the first match and then dropped a few crucial catches in the second. In the first Test and without Babar Azam and Shadab Khan, we fought gallantly and hard till the end that earned the team a lot of praise, which satisfies me and my fellow coaches.

“As we head into 2021, I would like to reflect on the positives and learn from mistakes in 2020 so that we can improve as a unit. A lot of cricket has to be played in the next year, which will not only require consistent performance but also top-notch fitness. But with a larger pool of young and talented cricketers available, I am hopeful we will do better by converting strong performances into positive results.”

Who are the youngsters he’s talking about? The only real inductions have been Rizwan and Naseem Shah?

Wow, look how he's twisted the narrative to suit him.

An honest man would concede that we bowled and batted absolutely terribly on the whole against NZ and were saved from total scoreboard humiliation by 3 one-off individual performances across two innings.

Then he's bragging because he 'nearly won in England' lol. Again, if Misbah had any self respect he would mention how he failed to prepare the bowlers for Woakes which actually cost us the game from a winning position.

Misbah seems desperate to me tbh. Has no actual successes so needs to add masala to whatever he can scrape from the barrel.

Could’ve not said it any better than this.

More topi, drama comments from the leech.
Who does he think he is fooling?

This guy is a coward by nature.
And you are absolutely right. A wise and brave man will concede it openly and look into his short comings.
If you are not ready to accept your short comings, how are you gonna fix them?
Everytime he opens his mouth, he spins up some super pathetic philosophical bovine excrement as if he knows it all and don’t wanna improve on anything.
