Imran Khan, former prime minister of Pakistan, is convinced the army is afraid of the elections because he would win

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has told BBC HARDtalk the military is petrified of an election, which is expected to take place later this year.

He alleged that "fascists" are leading the country into the "dark ages".

Mr Khan was elected in 2018, ruled for just under four years, and was then ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote last year.

Observers say a big reason was him falling out of favour with the powerful military.

Pakistan's military has for decades held a firm grip over how the country is run.

Mr Khan claims that his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is "the only party that was not created by military dictators", even though many critics argue that Mr Khan had the backing of the army during his rise to power.

He alleges that this is why there has been a campaign to dismantle it.

In the last few months, the party has seen significant defections, and arrests of key members. But Mr Khan insists it is intact.

"How come, despite the establishment openly going against us, trying to dismantle us, how come after we are out of government, we won 30 out of 37 by-elections?" he said in an interview with the BBC's Stephen Sackur.

He said the establishment had hoped that his removal from power would weaken his party. "Normally, it happens when you're out of power for quite a while. But instead, what happened was the party's popularity kept growing," Mr Khan said.

"They have tried everything. They have put 10,000 people in jail, including women and peaceful protesters. And worse, they have tortured people," he said, adding that if the party was not "finished" as his detractors claimed, the authorities would have announced the date of the election.
Mr Khan's supporters view him as a political outsider untouched by corruption, and have accused the military of engineering his removal from office - allegations that the army denies.

The former prime minister has been mired in legal problems since leaving power.

His team say he faces almost 200 charges including sedition, terrorism and abetting murder which see him shuttling between his tightly guarded home and the courts.
Mr Khan's arrest in May sparked nationwide protests that led to at least eight deaths

The strength of his popularity was displayed when he was arrested from inside a court in May, sparking nationwide protests.

Thousands of his supporters marched through the streets, tearing through military buildings across Pakistan and setting some on fire Many, including members of Mr Khan's own party, have blamed him for crossing a red line and encouraging the violence.

However, the former international cricket star-turned-politician denies involvement in the arson cases, and said those cases need to be investigated separately.

"What did you think the supporters would do when they saw the army, the commander, was picking me up from there? Was there not going to be a protest?" he said.

Mr Khan has insisted that it was the military who incited the violence by sending soldiers instead of police officers to arrest him.
Speaking to the BBC from his two-storey mansion in Lahore, Mr Khan, who positions himself as a reformist, said: "The fact is that the country is on the brink of a major disaster. We are heading [into] what I feel like are the dark ages.

"The only solution to Pakistan is free and fair elections. That's the only way we will get out of this mess," he added.

A series of laws have been discussed in parliament over the last few months, many of which critics say are designed to make it more difficult for Mr Khan and his party to run in the election, if not prevent them from doing so entirely.

One of the bills tabled recommends three-year jail terms for anyone found guilty of disclosing the identity of an army intelligence officer.

This comes amid growing criticism by Mr Khan of the military and intelligence officers. He is the first politician to have publicly named senior intelligence officers, accusing them of conspiring against him.

"Unfortunately, the country has been taken over by fascists, and they are petrified of elections. The reason why I'm suffering is because they know that [in the] elections, we would win hands down. And because of that, they're dismantling a democracy," he said.

Some realities i have accepted.

-true democracy never existed in pakistan
-establishment will always exist to control state
-establishment decides who wins election
-whether its imran, nawaz or zardari, the establishment will decide who will come.

Only thing i hope for is that there is no coalition and economic reforms can be taken.

It looks like PPP will be returning to power

Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Friday said he was ready to endure imprisonment even for 1,000 years and continue to stay incarcerated for his country, according to a media report.

Khan, 70, was sentenced to three years in jail by a sessions court on August 5 for hiding proceeds from the sale of state gifts (Toshakhana). He is currently incarcerated in Attock Jail in Punjab province.

A division bench, comprising IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, will take up the hearing next Tuesday (August 22).

Speaking to reporters on Friday after meeting Khan in Attock jail, Umiar Niazi, a member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf chief's legal team, said the former prime minister was in "good health, although he had grown a beard," The Express Tribune newspaper reported.

“He [Imran] was provided with a mirror and shaving kit today,” the lawyer said.

Niazi asserted that among a team of six, only he was granted permission to meet Khan.

The lawyer expressed his intention to file a contempt of court petition against the "jailer's conduct" for denying the legal team access to the former premier, despite possessing court orders.

“I do not care about not being given facilities [in jail]. It does not matter even if I am kept in jail for 1,000 years, but I am ready for it because [one has to] make sacrifices for freedom,” Niazi quoted Khan as saying.

Khan is facing more than 140 cases across the country and faces charges like terrorism, violence, blasphemy, corruption and murder since his ouster in April 2022.

The lawyer confirmed that the Federal Investigation Agency questioned Khan in Attock jail regarding the cipher (confidential diplomatic cable) issue on Wednesday, during which the former premier reiterated his previous stance.

He said Khan also spoke about the “disappearance” of his nephew Barrister Hassaan Khan Niazi, the report said.

The Lahore High Court directed authorities to produce Hassaan before the court by August 18 with regard to a plea seeking his recovery and an inquiry against officials over his “illegal detention”.

Meanwhile, police have informed the Lahore High Court on Friday that Hassaan Niazi, Khan's nephew and his focal person on legal affairs, has been handed over to a military court for trial.

In a police report submitted to the court, Hassaan will be investigated and tried by the military after he was named as the prime suspect in the case pertaining to the Jinnah House attack in Lahore, which was triggered after Khan was arrested in Islamabad on May 9.

3,600 data entry operators to help ROs in next elections
In Election Commission Wednesday decided to provide services of as many as 3,600 Data Entry Operators (DEOs) to Returning Officers (ROs) for the upcoming general election
ISLAMABAD: In a significant step, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday decided to provide services of as many as 3,600 Data Entry Operators (DEOs) to Returning Officers (ROs) for the upcoming general election.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s Media Coordination and Outreach Wing, the commission has allowed the services of 3,600 data entry operators for returning officers during the upcoming general elections, enabling them to get all kinds of support during the election. Moreover, a comprehensive training programme has been organized to enhance the capacity of these employees. The training is being conducted in 16 different cities of Pakistan from September 4 to 16.

The purpose of this training, the Election Commission statement pointed out, is to bring more transparency to the election process and complete the work on time.

For effective and comprehensive monitoring of this training, the Election Commission has also developed an advanced monitoring system. About 25 senior officers of the commission will supervise this training drill.

Already, the decision to acquire services of data entry operators comes in the backdrop of Election Commission’s already announced result compilation system (RCS), which was approved by the commission after having witnessed its mock trial some two weeks back.

The electoral body had a controversial experience of the result transmission system (RTS) in the 2018 general election that had collapsed, leading to criticism from almost all political parties and other segments of the society.

I believe the entire system is apprehensive about the elections due to their past misconduct.

It is not good to attribute blame solely to one institution.

UNITED NATIONS: The United States will continue to support credible elections in Pakistan that are free of violence and allow people to decide who rules them, says Elizabeth Horst, the US Deputy Secretary of State Responsible for Pakistan.

Addressing a seminar at One UN Plaza, Ms Horst also urged Pakistan to continue to implement the reforms suggested by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as that’s the only way to stabilise its ailing economy.

Ms Horst, Ambassador Robin Raphel, a former State Department official, and other scholars made these remarks while addressing a day-long seminar on “Exploring the Pillars of Democracy: US-Pakistan Relations”.

It was a side event of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly and its proceedings were made available to Dawn.

On one hand USA showing support to the Pakistan General Elections, and on the other they are exerting pressure on Pakistan through the IMF.

I dont know what are their true intentions regarding Pakistan.

Elections are the requirement, not free and fair election but elections taking place is, the western power can't be seen supporting dictators.

PTI, PPP demand exact date for polls
PTI says ECP shouldn’t hide behind technicalities; PPP seeks level-playing field for all

he Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Saturday urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to announce the exact date for the upcoming general elections without any delay.

PPP while demanding a level-playing field for all the political parties has also urged the ECP to announce the date and election schedule as per the Constitution while the PTI insisted that the ECP should play its constitutional role to ensure holding polls within the constitutionally mandated period of 90 days.

The demand came just days after the ECP announced that elections would be held in the last week of January as the delimitation process would be completed by Nov 30, followed by a 54-day election programme period before the general elections.

Apparently, the eagerly awaited announcement cleared the fog of political ambiguity and rekindled hopes for a resurgence of political and economic stability but despite clearing the air about polls’ timing, the ECP did not announce the exact elections date, leaving room for speculation.

Therefore, a PTI spokesperson urged the ECP to shun the useless practice of hiding behind the technicalities to avoid the announcement of a cut-off date for the general elections.

The PTI official also criticised the ECP for its dilly-dallying tactics to announce a specific poll date, demanding of the electoral body to avoid deviating from the Constitution.

In a statement, the PTI leader said that the ECP, through its officials, was trying to use technical reasons as an excuse to avoid announcement of the exact elections date, adding that the system of Pakistan was built on the foundations of democracy. Hence, he said, the ECP should focus on exercising its constitutional duty to conduct fair and transparent elections within the constitutionally defined framework.

ECP plans to rig polls through executive officers: PTI

ISLAMABAD: PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Sunday alleged that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was planning to appoint Grade-17 and 18 officers from the Executive, with less than one year in their retirement, as district returning officers (DROs) and AROs.

“This is a clear and blatant attempt to rig the upcoming general election on February 08. These very officers will be given a carrot of being looked after if they comply with the instructions of rigging, failing which, they will be shown the stick of retirement with no fringe benefits; a vast majority of these officers will take the option of being rewarded for executing rigging,” he alleged on X.

Omar said Pakistan was being pushed down a path from which democracy will never recover.

“We are heading into very dark days ahead as plans of pre-poll rigging and outright rigging the February 08, 2024 elections become apparent,” he wrote.
