It's never easy to bounce back after suffering a morale-sapping defeat, especially when the turnaround is so short. It was only Sunday when Axar Patel had cleared the ropes for the fifth time, and the faces said it all for the West Indies. They were impressive for most parts in the second ODI but Axar stunned them to a loss in the final over, and it must have been hard one to take.

Another series has now ended in defeat for the hosts but they definitely have a lot of positives to build on in the two games. Their batting unit delivered in unison for starters, something they haven't done in a while. The bowling too has looked good in patches against a batting lineup that still looks strong without some of the first-choice names. Nicholas Pooran would love nothing more than a win now to close out the series and snap their losing streak that has stretched to eight games now.

From an Indian perspective, even though the series is already in the bag, the visitors are not expected to make wholesale changes for this context. Shubman Gill has looked good in both the games, so it's highly unlikely he will be asked to make way for Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order. With Sanju Samson also making a vital fifty in the second ODI, Ishan Kishan may have to wait. With the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Hardik Pandya returning for the T20I series, some of the second choice players to have featured in these two games will hardly treat this contest a dead rubber, considering they will have to keep performing to stay relevant in the setup.

When: West Indies vs India, 3rd ODI, July 27, 9.30 AM local, 7 PM IST

Where: Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad

What to expect: Both teams have scored over 300 in the two games so far. A different strip is expected this time though. The weather forecast suggests that showers could cause frequent interruptions.

Team News

West Indies

With a thin squad, West Indies are unlikely to make any changes to their XI. Jason Holder missed the two games so far with Covid and it is unlikely he would have recovered in time for this encounter.

Probable XI: Shai Hope (WK), Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran (C), Rovman Powell, Akeal Hosein, Romario Shepherd, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, Hayden Walsh

India

Ravindra Jadeja was expected to be fit for this game but will the team management actually drop Axar Patel after his player-of-the-match performance? Jadeja could be preserved for the T20Is but if they decide to play him, he might get a nod ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal. Arshdeep Singh could get a look in as well in place of Avesh Khan who was carted around the other day.

Probable XI: Shikhar Dhawan (C), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Avesh Khan/Arshdeep Singh

What they said:

"It is a fun position to bat at, and I really enjoy it. It is one of the best positions to bat because you go into a very tough situation if the wicket falls in early. You go in and you have to see the new ball and then build your innings. Also if the openers have got into a really good partnership, then you have to go carry forward that momentum, take it on from where they have left and see to it that the run rate is maintained." - Shreyas Iyer on batting at No.3

Squads:

West Indies Squad: Shai Hope(w), Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran(c), Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, Hayden Walsh, Keemo Paul, Jason Holder, Keacy Carty

India Squad: Shikhar Dhawan(c), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson(w), Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad

Nicholas Pooran: The first two games, we were heartbroken. We are motivated today, we need to get over the line. We spoke about batting 50 overs, but we need to be more consistent. We will get to see the result eventually. Holder, Keemo and Carty come in.

Shikhar Dhawan: We will bat first. We will like to post a good score. The best thing is everything is performing, nice to see that. That's a big positive for us, happy with that. I feel that intent is important, but at the same time you need to be smart. Dravid is doing a good job, the more the players will play, the better they will get. We got one change. Prasidh comes in for Avesh Khan.

From BCCI

Ravindra Jadeja was not available for selection for the 3rd ODI since he is still not 100 percent fit.

The medical team will continue to monitor his progress.

Gill is playing selfish cricket. He is clearly looking for a century. Cannot really blame him as he is looking for a place in the ODI team.

Gill can score at a good rate but his last 15 runs have come up run a ball which means he was looking for his century. Poor thinking!

Gill is on 98*.

It is raining again and players are off.

India - 225/3 (36 overs).

Stop start today.

Hopefully WI get a chase of some sort.

No Century for Gill. He could have played some big shots to get to his century considering the weather. But he took the safe route and now he is stuck on 98*.

Gill a standout as India cruise to series sweep over West Indies

Openers Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan hit half centuries as India completed a series sweep over West Indies with an emphatic 119-run victory in a rain-affected clash in Port of Spain.

The rain plays havoc in Port of Spain

There were plenty of delays during India's innings, with the visitors forced to hit out late after a weather break saw the match initially reduced to 40 overs per side.

Another rain delay at the end of the 36th over saw India's innings completed even earlier, with the visitors posting a decent total of 225/3 from their allotted overs.

Opener Shubman Gill was the standout with a career best 98*, while stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan (58) hit his second half-century for the series.

Gill a standout as India's depth is tested

Gill was deservedly named Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his heroics during the tour, with the young right-hander scoring two half centuries and a total of 205 runs from three hits.

It goes to show that India are compiling some good depth in their white-ball squads, with Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur and Yuzvendra Chahal also showing good signs during the three-match series.

Experienced pacer Mohammed Siraj chipped in with two wickets early in West Indies' run chase on Wednesday, while Chahal finished the job by picking up four scalps of his own during an impressive spell.

More woe for West Indies

West Indies' form in 50-over cricket has been surprisingly poor of late, with the Caribbean side now sitting on a nine-match losing streak after consecutive series losses against Pakistan, Bangladesh and now India.

While there were plenty of positive signs in the first two matches of the series against India, the third and final game was completely one-sided as the hosts struggled to match it with their opponents.

Spinner Hayden Walsh picked up two wickets - but conceded 57 runs from his 10 overs - while West Indies' top-order failed to come to grips with India's new-ball bowling attack.

Skipper Nicholas Pooran and right-hander Brandon King each scored 42 in this match, but there were plenty of failures as a disappointing series came to an end for Phil Simmons' side.

More rubbish from West Indies.

Their cricket is going downhill with each passing match.

For me an equal if not a greater standout has been Shreyas Iyer who delivered quality knocks as no 3.

Gill may just be a stopgap in the absence of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. India have sorely lacked a good no 3 after Virat Kohli lost his form.

I hope Iyer continues to play like this against the bigger sides.
