Farokh Engineer has called for the bilateral cricketing ties between India and Pakistan to be restored saying the rise of Imran Khan to the post of Prime Minister could pave the way for the two neighbours to start a dialogue.

The bilateral cricket ties between the two nations have been suspended since the Mumbai attacks of 2008. The teams only face each other in major international tournaments. Moreover, since the terrorist attacks on Sri Lanka cricket team in 2009, international teams have refused to tour Pakistan on security grounds.

This has forced Pakistan to play their ‘home’ matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“Imran Khan, he is the prime minister now. Hopefully India and Pakistan will start a dialogue,” Engineer said at the inaugural Ranji Memorial Public Conversation in London earlier this week. “They should be playing Test cricket against each other because it will do Pakistan cricket, their economy, a world of good. But you hear about border skirmishes and this and that. They’ve got to have dialogue.”

Imran Khan, regarded as one of the greatest allrounders who led Pakistan to World Cup triumph in 1992, became the PM earlier this year. Engineer, a wicketkeeper-batsman who played 46 Tests and five ODIs for India between 1961 and 1975, said the political leaders of the two nations hold the key for the two famous rivals to start playing cricket on a regular basis.

“Unfortunately, the Indian government controls the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) or they (the BCCI) have been using that as an excuse. As a cricketer, I would love India to play Pakistan or vice versa. But it is a question of convincing the political leaders,” he said.

He continued, “Basically we are the same people. Both countries have extremely talented cricketers and I, for one, would love to see that happen but unfortunately the brakes are on,”

Farokh Engineer was my boyhood hero.

I have never, ever loved a cricketer as much as him.

It’s why I’m baffled when people accuse me of being anti-India!

What nonsense. I have never heard anyone call Farokh Engineer anti Indian.

Most of us want Indo-Pak sporting ties to resume. But the rabid Hindutva extremists in power and media hawks won't allow it to happen even if our sporting federations/boards give a green signal.

Just curious, what did you find special in him?

How it feels when somebody kills your brother and sister and your friend play crciket with the same people.
It feel betrated. India stop playing cricket after mumbai attack and it is the decision of congress to not to play cricket with pakistan. Once trust will build b/w the nation everything will resume. We refuse not only in cricket but in many field to cooperate with pakistan bcz of that terrorism thing.

He was everything that I hoped that MS Dhoni would become.

He was a thrilling aggressive batsman in an era of boring accumulators.

But he was also an ATG with the gloves: he was absolutely impeccable against the four man spin attack of Bedi, Chandrasekhar, Prasanna and Venkataraghavan - a leggie, a leftie and two totally different offies.

And at Lancashire he kept to good quicks like Peter Lever and Ken Higgs and was faultless.

I’d put him second only to Gilchrist in history as an attacking wicketkeeper-batsman.

He good enough to be the wicket keeper for the "Rest of the World" team that played matches against England in 1970 and against Australia in 1971-72.

With all the respect, but that's the same as saying I have a black friend I cant be rasict (just using it as an example).

I just checked this guys profile on cricbuzz, his str rate according to cricbuzz is 138 in test matches(2600+runs). Is this true or a mistake of cricbuzz ? If it is true than he was surely special.

He's right....

I'm just amazed how fun names can get in the subcontinent. Seriously "Farokh Engineer". Just incredible.

He was known for aggressive batting, though not sure about 138 SR. Cricinfo does not have an SR, so I am reluctant to accept the 138 Sr as fact. I reckon his SR would have been 60-70, which was pretty good for his era.

Whenever I see a list of Indian all time Test XI, I am surprised to see Farokh Engineer not considered for any of them. I reckon, the WK spot for an Indian XI is between Farokh Engineer and MS Dhoni. There is a difference of 7 points between MS (38 avg) and Engineer (31 avg), but Engineer also opened that batting for a majority of his career, especially when playing abroad.

Also, Engineer kept to the spin quartet, so his keeping skills were at least as good as, if not better than MS's.

Its a difficult one to choose and I have previously chosen MS over Engineer. But if asked right now, I would go with Engineer over MS in an Indian all time XI for Tests.

Yeah was also gonna comment on that. What a cool name.

On topic, Pakistan India Test match series would be something special but no chance of that happening.

Fun Fact - Farokh Engineer's father was a Doctor, and was thus referred to as Dr. Engineer.

Yes as if Manmohan Singh and congi govt allowing regular Indo-Pak matches. Do you realize why we are not playing regular cricket? Between 2004-2008 there were regular matches. Then one evening Lashkar decided to kill 200 innocent people in Mumbai and the master mind is still roaming freely in Pak. So if anything, blame your govt for not acting against the perpetrators. It has nothing to do with Hindutva or Modi.

We can not play Cricket with India at all seeing the current state of affairs. Never saw Engineer live or much off him at all. Wicket keeping is one thing that is difficult to judge when it comes to being the best. If you take most catches then are a good keeper for sure, if you score runs like a Gilchrist then much better then a tail end keeper like Farooque. Best keeper from that era was Rodney Marsh or Alan Knot.

Farookh was a Parsi & I have seen them using family title with professional names - Engineer, Contractor (Nari), Surti (Rusi), Marchant, Dukanwala, Mistri...

Brilliant cricketer, probably 2nd WK in history who could make a Test side as specialist bat (Les Ames was first). He was among first few south Asian cricketers to play professionally in Counties. Before MS, he was actually my WK for AT Indian ODI team. Engineer could have been among the highest paid cricketers in modern era for PLs & SLs. He charged down even young DK Lillee as opener!!!

Unlikely to happen.

Forget the politics, acrimony between BCCI and PCB with PCB dragging BCCI to courts rules out any series for a few years now.

Who would you choose between Engineer and MS in the Indian All time Test XI?
