India bowling icon named ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year

Producing his best-ever annual haul in the red-ball format, Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been crowned as the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024.

Bumrah was the standout bowler in the world in 2024, excelling in both home and away conditions and proving a key contributor in keeping India in contention in the ICC World Test Championship standings.

Marking his return to the longest format in late 2023 following a long absence owing to a back injury, Bumrah amassed an incredible wicket tally and set multiple records.

The right-arm quick was instrumental in home conditions as India registered series wins against England and Bangladesh, and he also rose to the occasion in away conditions in South Africa and Australia.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Test record in 2024: 71 wickets from 13 matches

Bumrah was far and away the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket in 2024, topping the charts with 71, well clear of second-placed Gus Atkinson of England (52 in 11).

He sent down an eye-watering 357 overs in the format, but maintained a phenomenal average of 2.96, breaking the mold in a quick-scoring era of the Test game.

His average across the year was a ridiculous 14.92, and he ended 2024 with an annual strike rate of just 30.1.

Bumrah’s 71-wicket haul makes him just the fourth India bowler to take more than 70 Test wickets in a calendar year, following in the footsteps of Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev.

Across Test history, none of the 17 bowlers to have taken 70+ wickets in a calendar year did so at an average as low as Bumrah’s.

Bumrah’s incredible 2024 haul began during India’s memorable Test win in Cape Town against South Africa, where the pace spearhead was on target with eight wickets across the two innings as India pinned down the Proteas by eight wickets.

Bumrah then went on to bag 19 wickets during the five-Test marathon at home against England, as the hosts prevailed with a 4-1 margin.

However, the seasoned pacer delivered his magnum opus in the high-stakes Border-Gavaskar Series in Australia, where he finished with an incredible 32 wickets from five Tests and was named Player of the Series.

It was during the series Down Under that Bumrah crossed the 200 Test wickets milestone, becoming the 12th Indian bowler to do so.

The 31-year-old set a unique record while achieving the feat, becoming the only bowler in Test history with a minimum of 200 dismissals to have an average less than 20 (19.4).

Memorable performance

Among an enviable list of displays, Bumrah’s best in Tests came in the series opener against Australia in Perth.

As the visitors started without full-time skipper Rohit Sharma, Bumrah assumed command of the team and led from the front in a famous win.

With Australia having folded India out for 150 on the opening day, Bumrah wreaked havoc with the ball against the hosts, finishing with a five-wicket haul to wrestle a comeback thanks to figures of 5/30.

After India set up a mammoth total of 534 for the hosts, Bumrah returned with three more wickets under his belt to cap off a monumental 295-run win, taking 3/42 as Australia suffered their first loss at the venue.

Many Many congratulations to Jasprit Bumrah. He is without question the greatest current cricketer in the world , arguably the greatest ever fast bowler and without a doubt a Top 5 fast bowlers to ever play the game. Bumrah made test cricket interesting. He rose to the occasions during the toughest battles. This regard is richly deserved.

GOAT Vibes :bumrah

Congrats to Bumrah, deserved it but don't know why I got reminded of this quote:

A journalist asked Ancelotti: "City controlled the ball for 90 minutes, and the possession rate was more than 70%."
Ancelotti: "They can take the ball home with them. I took Madrid To Semifinal

Indians to win ICC Test Cricketer Of The Year:

2004 - Rahul Dravid
2009 - Gautam Gambhir
2010 - Virender Sehwag
2016 - Ravichandran Ashwin
2018 - Virat Kohli
2024 - Jasprit Bumrah
They careers all went downhill from there after being ranked No. 1 in that year. This does not bode well.

This is the only award Root could have won too.

Shouldn't be any question about Cricketer of the Year, which belongs to Bumrah.

Why do you think Ashwin's career went down hill. He has the highest wickets in 3 combined test championship.
He was fully exposed as a home pitch bully soon after. Not even that, he was useless on flat pitches like Chennai vs Eng, and was outbowled by Lyon in his home BGT.

What after. He won in 2016. He had one bad series and retired. He was one of the main reason India won MCG test.

He reached the zenith of his career in 2016. He was being talked about as being amongst the greats. The subsequent years fully dispelled that of that notion.

Yes he had the occasional success here and there as did others (Dravid in Eng 2011 a big exception). But even his most succesful moment couldn't yield a single fifer. He peaked.

What do you mean didn't yield single fifer

Even in ashwin's so called match winning performances (Adelaide, MCG), he didn't get one fifer let alone run through a side. Kuldeep has more fifers than him in SENA as does the Lord Thakur.

So others shouldn't take wickets so that Ashwin cn take fifer. They say fifer is equivalent to 100 in batting. Pants 89, 97 Adelaide useless because they are not 100s. I would prefer a bowler dismissing Smith 3 times over a bowler cleaning up tail with a fifer.

Steyn - 2008
Johnson - 2014
Cummins - 2019
Bumrah - 2024

Only 4 pacers to win ICC test cricketer of the year award.

Jadeja took a rubbish 5 for in south Africa 2014 as dhoni has not trusted his pacers.kohli was good till 21 Adelaide. He scored 76 in pink ball test and got run out.

That was the only test where India played at DUrban. Only track that helps a spinner. South Africa deliberately gave us grassy pitch which won't wear off till 6th day or 7th day. SA is the biggest pitch manipulator among SENA countries.

Adelaide in 20 bgt too.chennai 21 , 24.24 eng series 4th test after his mother illness .
ya. also had a period of side strain. Only places where he was a sure starter was Srilanka, West Indies, Bangladesh where he has excpetional numbers.

Congrats!
Well deserved. He crushed the competition. Their wasn't anyone close to him as a test cricketer this year. Despite that one NZ test series which hampered him a little bit.

What a bowler and easily india's best ever produced.

Until he gets tested, I refuse to call him the best Indian bowler.

There is an asterisk mark over his records currently.

Quality wise, he is right up there with Marshall and McGrath. Only question against him is his durability. That will decide whether he ends up in top 5 test bowlers or top 10.

Well deserved award... Congrats to Bumrah. He was fantastic in 2024. Has been fantastic for years now

Bumrah has been named Cricketer of the Year 2024 🐐

Congratulations to him.
The greatest cricketer in the world today.

Bumrah deserved that award but is India gonna miss him in case he misses the Champions trophy or not???? maybe they want him to not play this event and be ready for the upcoming series against England?

Bumrah reflects on stellar 2024 and being crowned ICC Men’s Cricketer Of The Year

Recipient of Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy opens up on his historic run for India across all formats, the return of fellow pace compatriot Mohammed Shami, and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah capped off a remarkable 2024 by receiving his ICC Awards and Team of The Year caps in Dubai on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was named the ICC Men’s Cricketer Of The Year, ICC Men’s Test Player Of The Year and was inducted in the ICC Men’s Test Team Of The Year and ICC T20I Team Of The Year.

“It feels really good,” Bumrah said after receiving his ICC Awards.

“As a child, I'd seen some of my childhood heroes win this (Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy) award. Always a privilege when you get such an honour.”

Featuring across 21 matches (Tests and T20Is) in 2024, Bumrah snapped 86 wickets for India - 71 of which came in the longest format. The right-arm quick was also an integral member of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad.

Recapping the year gone by, Bumrah added, “The T20 World Cup which we won is always going to be special and will be there in my mind.

“Obviously, a lot of learnings in my mind in the year as well. We played a lot of Test cricket, we got to know a lot of different experiences, so yeah, I'm very happy and hopefully better things will follow.”

The premium pacer received his ICC honours ahead of India’s much-anticipated Champions Trophy fixture against Pakistan.

While Bumrah was ruled out of the India squad owing to a back injury he sustained on the tour of Australia earlier this year, the pacer opened up on the return of his fellow pace compatriot, Mohammed Shami.

The 34-year-old marked his return from a long-term injury and was a star in India’s opening win against Bangladesh, claiming a five-wicket haul.

“I'm really happy for him. Obviously he's had an injury struggle for so long. It takes a toll. But he's been very happy and very positive,” Bumrah said.

“Looks good, he has the skill obviously, that will never go anywhere. The more he plays, the more confidence will come, and hopefully, he'll help the team go further.”

Bumrah also expressed his excitement over the return of the Champions Trophy.

“The atmosphere is brilliant. The excitement...this tournament is coming after a long time so the buzz is there," he added.

“The start has been good, hopefully the matches will get even better and the competition will be even fierce.”
