India demolishes 500-year-old historic mosque to widen road

The Indian authorities removed a historic mosque, about 500 years old, in the city of Allahabad, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, under the pretext of widening a main road, according to local media.

Activists circulated a video on social media documenting the demolition of a large part of the historic Shahi mosque in the city of Allahabad, under the pretext of widening the public road.

The city police said, in a statement, "The Public Works Department is conducting expansion works for the main road in the Handia area in the city of Prayagraj, and the presence of the mosque – which was built about 5 centuries ago – in its current location hinders this expansion."

Local media reported that the mosque, which was built in the 16th century, was demolished a few days before the judiciary was due to consider a lawsuit calling for stopping the demolition process, after the Supreme Court had earlier rejected a petition to stop its demolition.

It seems like widening road was just an excuse to demolish a mosque.
 
Hundreds of temples and mosques have been demolished to widen roads. This is not restricted to one particular community.
 
This happens regularly in India with all places of worship. If the mosque was indeed 500-years-old as being claimed, its heritage should have perhaps given it some leeway. But India today doesn't seem to care much about preserving traditions or its culture. There's a lot of hot air and lip-service but the ground realties from the BJP is the opposite. And if you want to feel better about this, Varanasi which is one of the holiest places for Hindus and Modi's constituency has seen plenty of historical temples razed in the name of development. There's hardly any coverage of this, but if you google enough, you'll find interviews with priests lamenting this.

Modi did it himself when he was the CM in Gujarat.
 
There are plenty of such places of worship from all religions. Some are very old. More than a hundred or 200 years old or more. Those were not built according to any plans. But they do obstruct the traffic and does not fit into the new city plans and its development.

Anything over 300 years old must be given some consideration before being demolished.

Demolishing illegal structures be it religious or not has been happening for more than 30 years. Infrastructure projects cannot be stopped to appease every community in the country.
 
If the structure is 300-500 years old than they should make concessions. There are other alternatives. However people who are banging on about it here I am sure had no problem with the buddas in Pakistan or the historic structures in Saudi
 
Since its proven that temples are also demolished you will not see a few posters coming back to post here.

Just to widen the discussion, any historical churches or synagogues been demolished lately? Or Buddhist temples or Gurdwaras? For purposes of widening the roads obviously.

It’s a little building in the middle of a poor neighbourhood, see photo . Hardly historic or known like the mosque . Acc to bjp its 300 years old using politics against their rivals . Bit of course you agreed with the bjp policy of bombing children madrassa in Pakistan . I don’t in both .

1. You still haven't answered the question about why the random cutoff of 400.

2. Just fyi, the area where the mosque was demolished, Handia, is also a shabby neighbourhood. And the temple was also historical as it was 300 years old.
Of the few things I support of this government, its getting rid of illegal encroached religious places, be it a mosque or a temple for building required infrastructure.

Do you have any examples of any prominent known large visible historic Hindu temples being demolished ? Your bjp were upset with a supposedly 300 year temple but happy to demolish a 500 year much more prominent mosque ? At least understand your own defence as wenger did at arsenal .

Because no 500 was given as examples if you think both examples are equal importance, pls join current Pakistan government.
 
Good step. The country needs better infrastructure, and whatever comes in between whether temples or mosques need to give away.
 
It all depends upon the intention , if the road was really needed to be widened for traffic safety , nothing wrong with demolishing a mosque which can be built elsewhere .
 

Survey finds mosque in India's Varanasi was built over temple - Hindu petitioner​


The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has found that a 17th century mosque in one of Hinduism's holiest cities was built after destroying a Hindu temple that existed there, a lawyer for Hindu petitioners said, a possible new flashpoint in a decades-long dispute.

Muslim lawyers in the legal case being heard in the city of Varanasi disputed the comments by the lawyer for the Hindu petitioners but did not give details.

The Gyanvapi mosque is in Varanasi, which is also Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency.

Reuters has not seen the full ASI report, copies of which were shared only with the petitioners in the case. The regional office of the ASI in Uttar Pradesh state, where Varanasi is located, declined comment.

The ASI headquarters in New Delhi did not immediately respond to a request for comment on a public holiday. The district court registrar in Varanasi city could not be reached for comment.

"Remnants of the statues of Hindu gods have been found in the basements during the court-ordered survey," Vishnu Shankar Jain, the lawyer representing Hindu petitioners, told reporters on Thursday.

There is no point in witch hunting for Mosques that are built over ancient Hindu structures. It is a dark period of a bygone era.
If you keep digging deep, many more such things will be found and will only lead to chaos.
