This is a genuine discussion problem is Capt you are just trying to take a dig here coz your argument with another Pakistani poster.

Anyhow on the topic, can’t believe its Uttrakhand of all states , never expected such a data from that state.

this is indeed very demoralizing that we are in now 21st century but still some human beings are so backward

Dont these guys know that they are killing their society? all the boys born will turn to gay lifestyle when they become adults as there are no girls, and so there will be no kids in future and eventually the whole society will die; this is a horrible future

Ok, being gay is not a life style , you are in 21st century , also on the point in Brazil women outnumber the men but look at amount of homosexuals.

You are living in Canada not some third world
Country to have such regressive views.

If every couple in a village wants boy instead of girl, how will reproduction happen? Both boys and girls are needed.

This has been talked about for decades but nothing is ever done about it.

Kashmir is the worst? Good to see Chattisgarh doing well, its my fav middle state which has seen a lot of industrialization in last 15 years although Raipur is very populated.

South India fares better than North india in almost every aspect. Kudos to them!

The mindset of people from North India/Pakistan seems to be stuck in the 17th century.

Quite demoralising that in this day and age such mentalities still flourish in a modern nation. Imagine growing up in an a village where there are no young girls and just a collection of frustrated teenage boys twiddling their thumbs and other digits?

I recommend reading the article first so you can understand that what happened really isn't that shocking.

They chose a district with over 700 villages, and then specifically picked 132 villages that met the specific condition (with just 216 children over 3 months). That's less than 2 children per village.

The sex ratio is definitely an issue in India, but this is just sensationalization. You can probably find a hundred villages in some district with no boys being born in the last 3 months.

Which Pakistani poster am I having an argument with? I haven't been on here much lately so might have lost the thread on whatever debate you are talking about. This story was in today's Times and I find it sad that we are still talking about it.

All southie and north east states doing good.

Wish these northie states would follow suit.

I read this news a day or two back. Depressing stuff really.

What is the demarcation line which separates North from South?

Somebody overlay this map with map of literacy rate.... I'm sure the states that are green or pink have higher literacy rates.

The pink states have the highest literacy rate but Himachal has hig literacy rate as well but stuck with 107-111

That would be interesting and would certainly support your claim that the news story is just sensationalism. Do you have any examples of villages where no boys have been born in those sort of proportions?

Palestine also has a high male to female birth ratio if I recall correctly. I think I read a study where it was found that more males are born in war time naturally

Doesn't matter.

Atleast the illiterate and poor states are not breeding grounds of "terror" like TN and Kerala.

So that alone cancels everything.

Add in the fact that they vote for progressive parties like BJP makes them far ahead of us dumb southies who bootlick dravidian parties who are more pathetic than even hindi hinterland govts.

Only saving grace in south india is karnataka.

No one in India wants a girl. The fear of paying dowry down the line when she marry's is still rampant in India culture and society. They don't make all these boring saas-bahu drama's for nothing!

For every 100 males 10 of them will have to be bachelors for life.

Good for population control.

They don't have to remain bachelors, section 377 is no more, I remember bollywood celebrities were very happy. Especially coffee with I forget his name...:smith

This is so wrong. The ladies who go for abortion (probably forced to do so), have they forgotton they were born as babygirls themselves?

And what about the long term consequences? Where the hell will the boys find spouses? And women, who already are not safe, will be a bigger target for rape.

The competition among men will be tougher. They will start killing each other also.

When you try to mess with Nature, you will face the consequences accordingly.

It is more of a severe problem in some particular castes/groups. Though caste based surveys are strongly discouraged, they can provide interesting information.

I have seen that in some of the castes, marriage of even lower-middle class girls costs 50 Lakh INR.

In some of the castes, wheels have turned so much that they need to provide bride's father with marriage expenses due to shortage of girls.

This problem is much much bigger than this data shows.

Remember the Indian demographics.

Schedule castes (almost always means lower caste people barring a few exceptions who managed to make a backdoor entry to the schedule) percentage 16.6%

Scheduled tribes 8.6%

Muslims 14.2%

Christians 2.3%

These nearly 42% people have less interest in aborting a female fetus. Because marriages are low cost affairs in these communities. Women from some of the tribes and lower castes are better off than upper caste ones due to being able to make their own decisions.

So these near 42% people + very modern/highly educated/westernized upper-class + smaller progressive Hindu sects + those leftover from progressive states like TN/KL + those from far northeast who have a very different culture. Considering these sets overlap, I will make a very conservative estimate of 60% people who have a boy:girl ratio very close to 1:1 or 100:100 for simplicity.

This makes the situation a great deal worse for that remaining 40% group. Typical middle class Indian from one of the central/northern/middle states.

I have several friends who have grown up with me and are now 40+ (so am I. I am not Rashid Khan) and are still not married. Apart from one, all belong to the same subset.

I agree that it is normal for a westerner to marry this late in life. For an Indian, it is way out of ordinary unless for religious reasons.

Quite demoralising that in this day and age such mentalities still flourish in a modern nation. Imagine growing up in an a village where there are no young girls and just a collection of frustrated teenage boys twiddling their thumbs and other digits?

This thread and numerous others on various websites as well as a veritable media storm has been set off by a blatantly misleading set of statistics. The moment I saw this story, I got the feeling that this is totally wrong and decided to investigate. My predominant reason was that poor villagers in a remote part of Uttarkhand DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO OR MONEY FOR ULTRASOUND TESTS OF INTRA-UTERINE SEX DETERMINATION! So they have no means of selecting female fetuses for abortion.
Here's what I discovered...

There are over 500 villages in this part of Uttarkhand. The reports said 216 boys and no girls were indeed born in the 132 villages between April and June. But officials found 180 girls and no boys were born during the same period in 129 different villages. And to complete the mixed picture, 88 girls and 78 boys were born in another 166 villages.

So, some "genius" decided that they would select just that part which showed the villages with only male births and publish it as clickbait. And, in this era of non-critical news consumers, it worked.

Overall 961 live births were recorded in Uttarkashi between April and June. A total of 479 were girls, while 468 were boys. (The rest were possibly stillborn) This, officials say, corresponds with the district's favourable sex ratio of 1,024 women for 1,000 men, higher than the national average of 933 women per 1,000 men.

So you see, Uttarkashi is one of the places in India which actually has a proper natural sex ratio at birth. The report goes on to add the following - Locals claim there is little history of discrimination between boys and girls in the district, and point to its favourable sex ratio. "Be it girl or boy, we only pray that the child is healthy and happy," Roshni Rawat, a local woman, told the Hindustan Times newspaper.

This data maybe misleading but the problem is very real.

As for ultrasound machines, I have seen too many of them at the shoddiest of places, in remotest of areas.

I have even seen a doctor performing ultrasound scans out of a Maruti van in villages.

Very small towns have gynecs since the proliferation of private medical colleges in 80s.

One medical student told me that donation to land a seat in gynecologist diploma post MBBS is even more than that for a masters degree in other subjects like orthopedics etc.

These topics go beyond point scoring, should be taken seriously regardless

I agree that this problem is very real in that part of the world. The at birth sex ratio of 933 females to 1000 males in India clearly speaks of a terrible problem.
However, this thread is based on a story that is a lie with deliberately misleading statistics. The issue I was addressing is that people (journalists) no longer feel the need to be truthful while propagating such blatant nonsense & others believe them unquestioningly. One needs to be very, very careful with one's news sources.
BTW, there are just 3 ultrasound machines in Uttarkashi - all at government clinics. If you want to you can find the article I quoted in the BBC news website. Click through World, Asia & then India news. It was written by a chap named Soutik Biswas.

Thank-you Bosquanet for exposing browb scoring of fake captains and his cheergirls.
Now see the snakes slithering away from this thread after getting exposed.

This article is by Indian left wing website so it should shut up some of the Indians who can't stop themselves from taking a dig at North Indians.

I guess Uttarakhand is doing well within BJP regime. Keep your pretty Dravidian parties to your highly developed water scarce states only.

Steady on fela. You have barely made a dozen posts and you are making personal attacks on respected contributors to this forum. This data was produced by Indian sources and is being investigated by Indian authorities. Don't shoot the messenger.

Oh and of course, welcome new member! :)

You are partially correct, I might be a new member but I have been following PP since 2011.
I know the posting patterns of posters quite well.

Thank-you for welcoming, appreciate it.

My post had no intent of "exposing" any particular poster. Having been involved with research for most of my career, I have a particular bee in my bonnet over the abuse of statistics and spread of such misinformation. And this particular story just looked so contrived I wondered how anyone could fall for it.

While Uttarakhand has a better than national average male : female ratio of 966 females to 1000 males, that really has nothing to do with the current BJP government. That is the ratio from the 2011 census, long before the BJP came to power.

I find the North Indian vs South Indian fights quite curious, especially on a Pakistani website. I am sure that the Pakistani posters are highly amused. I stay clear since I do not have a stake in such arguments. What I will say is that Uttarakhand is absolutely gorgeous & my wife (who was born in eastern India) has invested in a property there which has the most sublime views of the Garhwal himalayas including Nanda Devi. Someday we hope to shift there for parts of the year.

Fair enough points.
