India has registered a strong protest over the US approving a proposed military sale worth $125 million for Pakistan’s F-16 combat jet fleet, calling in the American envoy in New Delhi to convey its “grave concern”.

Days after the meeting between Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and US President Donald Trump, the Pentagon announced on July 26 that the state department had approved the proposed deal for “24/7 end-use monitoring” of the F-16s.

“We have taken up the matter with the US ambassador in Delhi, as well as with the US government in Washington through our ambassador. We have expressed grave concern over US military assistance to Pakistan,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told a regular news briefing on Thursday.

People familiar with developments said the US envoy was called in to the external affairs ministry for lodging a strong protest.

In response, Kumar said, the US side had informed India the “proposed sale does not indicate any change in the US policy of maintaining a freeze in military assistance to Pakistan”.

“The US has publicly stated the proposed sale is intended to enable the US to continue technical and logistics support services to assist in the oversight of the operations of F-16 aircraft in Pakistan’s inventory,” he said.

Trump snapped military and security aid for Pakistan in January last year after accusing Islamabad of resorting to “lies and deceit” in return for billions of dollars of assistance over the past two decades.

However, the warmth displayed by Trump during his first meeting with Khan last month and the US reliance on Pakistan’s support for pushing forward talks with the Afghan Taliban had led observers to conclude that Washington might resume military aid for Islamabad.

The Pentagon statement announcing the proposed sale had said it was cleared after Pakistan requested a “continuation of technical support services; US Government and contractor technical and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics support to assist in the oversight” of the F-16s. It had added that the proposed sale “will not alter the basic military balance in the region”.

That is odd, india buys Russian weapons even though U.S doesn't like it. So why protest at this?

How idiotic is this statement from india’s spokesman: why would the US assure India that military aid to Pakistan has been not been resumed. It was frozen due to Afghanistan related issues and had nothing to do with India in the first place

Yes ofc ,the one and only def comes up

Modi should bow down, serve his master tea, allow him to take plaudits for ending the Kashmir issue, and not buy Russian military equipment, and then Trump might decide not to sell Pakistan the add ons.

Pak isn't going to pay for it this is part of the US technical assistance and was on hold after US suspended our AID last year.

Instead of worrying about anyone else's air force the Indian government should concentrate on bringing their own air force into the 21st century. Time to replace those MiG-21 flying coffins instead of whining about what Pakistan are doing with their F16s.

the moment pakistan got his hands on nuclear weapons, whatever india does in terms of its military it is neutralized.

Pakistan still lost the Kargil misadventure. Having nuclear weapons did not change the outcome one bit.

Pakistan still holds 6 peaks. This Indian troll is at it relentlessly. Either this nonsense or the OBL nonsense, he posts nothing else. Fittay moo maaro iiska yaar

lol @ Indians, why the heck do they even care about this ? Pakistan at least had the decency to not be a drama queen when US just recently approved a package of 690 Million for the C-17 aircrafts for India...

From the outside looking in, it feels like India's claim of isolating Pakistan has irked other nations. There's been a considerable uptick in assistance ever since.

It would be laughable for Pakistan to protest this. The trajectory for US to India weapons sales is only going to go up. Even if Pakistan were completely solvent, we would never be able to match the sales potential of India. Thankfully for Pakistan, India’s worst enemies to these sales are HAL etc.

I don’t think so. It’s basically a combination of lucky breaks for Pakistan. Trump’s election and the mature response to Balakot tree massacre and the optics of Imran’s visit to the US.

Why are they worried when they can easily down our F-16s with their rusty MiG-21s. :fawad

$125 million in military aid is a drop in the bucket for the US, considering what it gives to other allies. Also this technology was long overdue for Pakistan only it was blocked due to certain US politicians getting kickbacks from certain anti-Pakistan groups.

India has no right to object, it’s not any of its business. Does Pakistan object object when India buys billions of dollars worth of defense armaments from Israel, Russia, the US etc.? No, Pakistan doesn’t. Previously Pakistan was ruled by corrupt despots like Sharif and company who made under the table, backroom deals with Indian business entities for their own personal greed. Which is exactly why one didn’t hear much protest against Indian arms purchases or flagrant human rights violations in Kashmir while Sharif was in power.

In contrast Imran Khan’s government will and should certainly raise loud objections regarding India’s massive military spending and heavy militarization in Kashmir while completely ignoring any semblance of human rights in that part of India.
