India have named a nearly unchanged squad from their recently concluded T20I series with Sri Lanka for their upcoming series in New Zealand, the only exception being the omission of wicket-keeper Sanju Samson.

Samson played only in the final game of India's 2-0 series win, having a largely quiet game. He affected no dismissals with the gloves, and when tasked with maintaining the momentum built by his side's opening partnership Samson scored a six from his first ball before being dismissed by his second.

The named squad will contest five T20Is against New Zealand, beginning in Auckland on Friday 24 January, and finishing in Tauranga on Sunday 2 February. The squad retains all three players vying for the opener spots ahead of this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup - namely Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul - with India seemingly still deciding on their favoured pair.

SQUAD: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (wk), Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Navdeep Saini, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur

really curious to see how Blundell, seems like a really good prospect.

Wellington Firebirds veteran Hamish Bennett has been recalled to the BLACKCAPS as part of a 14-player squad to face India in five T20s, starting at Eden Park next Friday night.

With regular pacemen Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson still recovering from injury, Bennett is in line to make his first appearance for the national side since 2017.

Selector Gavin Larsen said the call-up was just reward for the 32-year-old’s form and perseverance.

“We’re delighted to have Hamish back in the fold for what will be a huge series against India,” Larsen said.

“Over the past few seasons he’s consistently been one of the top domestic white-ball bowlers and we’ve been impressed how he’s been able to evolve his game.

“We all know he brings good pace and bounce but it’s the clever variations he’s added that make him such a well-rounded T20 bowler.”

Bennett is currently equal-third highest wicket-taker in this season’s Dream11 Super Smash (14 wickets at an average of 18.4) and topped the bowling charts in last season’s Ford Trophy.

Captain Kane Williamson returns to the BLACKCAPS T20 squad after missing the England series in November with a hip injury, while Tom Bruce has been recalled for the final two games of the series in a swap-out with Colin de Grandhomme.

Jimmy Neesham, who missed the final two round-robin games of the Dream11 Super Smash with an injured quad muscle, is the only other change from the England series - he will instead play for New Zealand A in three one-dayers against India A next week.

Larsen said it was a busy period ahead across the three formats and the selectors wanted to use their resources to their best advantage.

“The next few weeks will be really intense for our elite male cricketers and we’re fully aware of the challenges ahead. We’re clearly wanting to win the series in front of us while also considering our wider ICC T20 World Cup campaign plan.

“We see both Daryl and Jimmy as important all-rounders in the T20 format. With a travelling squad of just 13 and the need to balance the options for the series, Daryl gets this opportunity against India as a reward for his consistent form for the BLACKCAPS.”

Bruce will get an early look at India in the one-day format next week when he captains the NZ A side against its star-studded counterparts - who boast ten internationals.

He’s joined in the 13-player squad by current BLACKCAPS Test teammates Todd Astle, Glenn Phillips and the in-form Tom Blundell who will keep wickets.

The side also features a first-time call-up for Wellington Firebirds paceman Ollie Newton and a return of Otago Volts T20 captain Jacob Duffy - with both pace-bowlers showing strong form domestically.

KL Rahul’s stupendous white ball form makes him a firm favourite to get his place back in the red ball team even as selectors fret on all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s fitness before picking ODI and Test squads for the New Zealand tour here on Sunday.

Rahul has been India’s most consistent player in T20 and ODIs but he lost his place in the Test squad after the tour of Australia.

But as skipper Virat Kohli said that it’s difficult to leave a player like Rahul from any squad, he has a better chance than fit-again Prithvi Shaw or Subman Gill who was reserve Test openers during home series last season.

The other change in Test squad could be fast-rising Navdeep Saini going as an extra pacer rather than Kuldeep Yadav as the third spinner since only one among Ravichandran Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja will make the playing XI.

Similarly, Indian team management is eagerly waiting for Hardik to become “bowling fit” for white ball matches post back surgery and will be an automatic choice for ODIs if fit.

He had failed the mandatory “bowling workload test” after which his personal trainer S Rajnikanth advised him to pull out of India A’s shadow tour.

In case, Hardik can’t make it, selectors might either look at hitting prowess of Suryakumar Yadav since the ODIs in the Kiwiland will be an extension of T20s in World Cup year.

There is also a possibility that Ajinkya Rahane will be considered due to his better technique compared to Kedar Jadhav who is slowly falling off in pecking order.

“Kedar is certainly not going to play 2023 World Cup and doesn’t even bowl now. Since he is not in T20, no point in carrying him to New Zealand. Possibly Surya or Rahane should be tried,” a BCCI source privy to selection matters said.

When are prithvi Shaw and gill going to get selected??

Hailing KL Rahul’s ability to perform any given role in limited overs cricket, India skipper Virat Kohli more or less confirmed that the Karnataka batsman would continue to keep wickets at least in the first couple of T20Is in New Zealand. Rahul was given the job of keeping the wickets after designated wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant was concussed after being hit on the head in the first ODI against Australia. Rahul, who regularly keeps for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, kept in all three ODIs and did a commendable job behind the stumps.

“It definitely allows us to play an extra batsmen which strengthens our batting massively,” Kohli told reporters after India beat Australia by 7 wickets in the third ODI at Bengaluru to take the three-match series 2-1.

Rishabh Pant was fit to play in the 3rd ODI and he was even seen going through full-fledged drill ahead of the start of the series but India chose to persist with Rahul. India begin their Kiwi tour on January 24 with five Twenty20 matches and Kohli believes Rahul’s dual role will boost their batting.

“We have to persist with it as he has done well. We have to see whether it works, you cannot chop and change. I do not see why we should change this playing XI,” Kohli said.

Kohli also highlighted that India had done this before with Rahul Dravid in the 2003 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

“That is a very important factor as far as the team balance is concerned. If you look at the 2003 World Cup where Rahul (Dravid) bhai (brother) started keeping, the balance became different because you could play an extra batter and guys at the top could really play positive cricket.”

Rahul, a specialist opener, batted at number three in the first ODI, dropped down to five in the second match and returned to open the innings in the final game.

His 80 off 52 balls was key to India posting 340 in the second match and also made 47 in a losing cause in Mumbai.

“He is very open to playing anywhere because he is a proper batsman and can do you good in any format and any position in the game,” said Kohli.

“He won’t go slam bang from ball one but he can do what he did in Rajkot just playing good cricketing shots. So I think solid game plan and understanding of his game is helping (him).”

Pant, who has been slammed by critics for not being consistent as a batsman and with the gloves, is part of India’s T20 squad but Kohli insists India will persist with Rahul for a bit.

“He has come in to that slot and has done well, so we will have to persist with that,” said Kohli.

“You can’t chop and change immediately and create confusion within the group. So we are playing very well unchanged and we did the job again, two back to back wins.”

India leave on Monday for New Zealand, where they will also play three ODIs and three Test matches.

This is important tour for Indians. Prithvi Shaw should replace Dhawan.

BCCI please don't bring rahane for T20s

Let him play atleast 50 to 70 domestic matches.

He has played 20 FC matches in 3 years.

For 50-70 matches it will take another 5 years.

So he should wastes one third of his career in FC?

Dont talk like a murakh.

As usual kaptaan getting in his buddies insteadof whose talented and performing, the tour isn't in india you knucklehead, what wrong has vihari committed to be dropped or replaced by your buddy.

Only the T20 squad is announced. why do you want to see Vihari in that format??
Kohli does NOT have buddies. neither did the captains before him. only Ganguly selected and backed a few players consistently in his captaincy days and made them his 'buddies'.
better give some solid proof about this notion of Kohli selecting his buddies.

However on a brighter side there are also talks of junking Jadhav altogether.

3 Tests and 5 ODI's would have been so much better. Damn T20 format!

So many T20s this year for India is just due to the world cup. Otherwise this slam-bang circus format is meant for juvenile teams like Afg, Ire etc to feel good that they are playing with big boys.

That does not mean that big boys like Aus, Eng, India are not good in this format. Just that they don’t care.

The next ICC event is T20 World Cup, not 50-over World Cup.

Will never happen. It's been 13 years since the format has been played regularly, and yet teams don't take it seriously bar the World T20.

The entire format is a joke!

True, irritating to see so many of them. Anyways with t20 wc coming up I guess it is the right decision though, hope it won't become the norm.

Ha ha

Anyways I will probably just check in once in a while to see how Rahul and our fast bowlers are doing. Bumrah is the champ, excited to see how Saini does on fast bouncy pitches and man the way Shami has been nailing them inswinging Yorkers of late is a sight to behold.

In my opinion, ODI is the most balanced of the format. Test Cricket is the *real* format no doubt, but these days T20 is where big bucks are at.

Look at guy like Pujara who is absolute class, but cant find an IPL contract to save his face.

Problem is Cricket has too many formats and one of them needs a boot. For example, how do you gauge a series where T20, ODI, Test are played? What if a team wins test series but loses both limited overs format?

More like junk food, you won't mind once in a while, but too much of it will ruin your system.

HaHa ... true. The only reason why I watch T20 cricket is because of Kohli. If not for him, I won't watch a single T20 match. Much like how I watched IPL till the time Sachin played. I haven't watched a single edition of IPL since he retired.

New Zealand is up against a “powerhouse” in the visiting Indian cricket team, says former all-rounder Craig McMillan who feels the Black Caps will have to win in two out of three formats to be eligible for at least the “pass marks“.

New Zealand will host India for five Twenty20s, three ODIs and two Tests beginning here on January 24 and the host will be desperate to bounce back from the recent 0-3 Test drubbing at the hands of Australia.

“It’s big. This whole Indian tour is big after what happened in Australia,” McMillan was quoted as saying by Radio Sport's podcast.

“This Indian side are a powerhouse. Doesn’t matter if it’s Tests, ODIs, T20s, they are the real deal so it’s going to be a really intriguing tour. For New Zealand to get a pass mark for this tour they need to win two of the three series.”

The series against India will start with the T20 rubber on Friday and McMillan feels with the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled to be held later this year, it is imperative for New Zealand to win this assignment.

“Five Twenty20s to start and I know it’s not everyone’s favourite format of the game but we’ve got a T20 World Cup later in the year in October in Australia so straight away these five matches become important. Because of the performance in Australia we need to start winning again and get that support back,” he said.

“They’re still trying to find in T20 what our best side is. We’ve just seen the Super Smash and there’s an opportunity for some young guys who performed in that to be given a chance,”McMillan added.

Great to see India playing 5 T20Is series, Though would have liked a 5 match ODI series too..

India vs New Zealand: Virat Kohli identifies key areas of focus during New Zealand series

The Indian team bounced back after a humiliating defeat in the first ODI in Mumbai to clinch the series 2-1 and as per captain Virat Kohli, this will give the side a lot of confidence when they travel to New Zealand. Despite ticking almost the boxes in the last two games, the skipper identified areas which could be worked on when the side takes on New Zealand. “Again, we want to bat well when we bat first and in case we’re defending a low total, we should be able to do that as well. We can’t afford to ease into the series after two games, because then it keeps getting tougher and tougher, so we’ll look to make a mark in the first game that we play,” he said after the match.

India were not very lucky with the tosses as the skipper lost all the three tosses in the series, but he believed that the side spoke about taking out all conditions across all formats.

“We spoke after the World Cup the way we exited, you can’t always look for a situation that should go your way at the toss. If we like chasing as a team, it doesn’t mean we press the panic button if we lose the toss, we’ve to stay composed enough to put in strong performances.

“We’ve literally taken the toss out of context, and we’re as prepared as possible to do something the opposition asks us to do,” he said.

“That’s been the difference, even if we lose the toss, we have the belief that we can play expressive cricket to get results our way. The last six or eight months have been a revelation and the younger guys stepping up is a very good sign for Indian cricket,” the skipper said.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan was Tuesday ruled out of the five-match T20 series in New Zealand due to a shoulder injury he suffered while fielding in the third ODI against Australia in Bengaluru.

“Yes, he has been ruled out of the T20 series. A replacement will be announced soon” a BCCI official said.

Dhawan’s injury troubles have carried into the new year and he did not come out to open during the successful run chase against Australia on Sunday.

The southpaw was taken for an x-ray after he hurt his left shoulder during fielding at the Chinnaswamy Stadim on Sunday. K. L. Rahul came out to bat in his place alongside Rohit Sharma. Dhawan was seen wearing a sling on his left hand.

The 34-year-old Dhawan did not take the field for the entire duration of the Australian innings in the second ODI after a Pat Cummins bouncer hit him on the rib cage while batting.

Dhawan missed the entire limited overs series against West Indies last month.

He also had to pull out of the 2019 World Cup due to a fractured thumb, an injury he suffered against Australia. In the same game, he had scored a match-winning hundred.

Dhawan had scored 96 and 74 in the first two games of the current series against Australia. India won the series 2-1.

While India has named an almost unchaged squad, Misbah on the other hand is chopping and changing 6-7 players every single T20I series.

Our T20 team almost freezed. After T20 world Cup Dhawan will replaced. Remaining most of the players are Young.

Rohit, kohli and Shami will stay in the game for few more years in T20. Alternatively these replacements will be worked out.

Still I have to applaud that India has identified core players and are giving them maximum exposure together to gel with each other before the World T20.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the five-match T20I series and the following three-match ODI series against New Zealand due to the injury he suffered during the third ODI against Australia. Indian team announced wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson as his replacement for the T20I series. Prithvi Shaw, who smashed 100-ball 150 for India A’s second practice game against New Zealand XI at Lincoln on Saturday, received an ODI call-up, in place of Dhawan.

“An MRI of his shoulder was conducted, and the results have confirmed a grade II injury of his acromio-clavicular joint. His hand will be in a sling and he has been advised rest for some time. He will start his active rehab management in the first week of February at the National Cricket Academy,” the BCCI release said.

Dhawan fell awkwardly while diving to save a run during the match in Bengaluru last week on Sunday, and did not come out to bat. He was later seen at the post-match celebrations wearing a sling around his arm.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Sanju Samson as Dhawan’s replacement in the T20I series and Prithvi Shaw for the ODI series,” the release further added. Apart from Shaw replacing Dhawan, no other change were made to the ODI squad that recently clinched the series against Australia 2-1.

Dhawan made a brilliant comeback in the series against Australia as he scored 96 and 74 in the first two matches. He looked in good touch against the Aussie bowlers and this injury could be a big concern for India in the overseas tour. Due to his good show in the recently-concluded series, he gained seven slots to reach 15th position with 170 runs in two innings.

India’s T20I squad: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (VC), Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (WK), Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Navdeep Saini, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur

Kohli has a thing against Gill I suppose, just needs to keep knocking and not get into controversy!

So you support RCB in IPL?

India will easily win the T20I series, NZ are playing a very weak side with all our pacers injured.

The pitches will be extremely flat in the test series with very dry weather right now.

People said the same thing about Rahul and Kohli too, we know how that turned out. Tell me a single example where he came out as a vindictive politician off the field? Hell if anything he is a bit too attached with the youngsters and sometimes that clouds his judgements. I can't seem to think of a reason what could he possibly have against Gill!! In terms of stature and achievements Gill is a nobody compared to him and will do extremely well to accomplish half the things Kohli achieved. If it was Rohit I would have understand but to have a thing against a rookie who is 10 levels below him is just ridiculous. Veteran poster like you shouldn't come up with conspiracy theories like this.

After he was dropped from the New Zealand team for the new year's Test against Australia, fast bowler Tim Southee wants to look past the snub and shift his focus on the upcoming India series, which begins on 24 January.

New Zealand suffered a heavy defeat in the Test series in Australia, losing it 3-0. After playing in the first two matches, Southee was replaced by Matt Henry in the playing XI. He admitted he was disappointed at the time, but aims to continue contributing to the team's cause even when not a part of the XI.

"It's disappointing. You're gutted every time you're left out. It's an absolute dream to play for New Zealand and every time you do miss out it hurts, but you've got to respect the decisions and try to help out and give back to the team, even when you're not playing," he told the reporters ahead of the first T20I.

The 31-year-old had bowled nearly 100 overs across the two Tests in Perth and Melbourne and picked up 12 wickets. New Zealand coach Gary Stead had remarked that the reason behind dropping Southee for the third Test was actually his heavy workload.

"The workload that Tim has had, not just in the last two tests but if you put the last four together, it's somewhere around 200 overs in a short period of time, we felt that Matt would have given us a point of difference," Stead had said.

Now with the India series only a couple of days away, Southee wants to put the Test disappointment behind him and help his team bounce back.

"We had a big chunk of Test cricket and the guys that were in Australia are reasonably experienced guys … they've had tough tours before and they've bounced back and the reason why they've played for a long period of time is they've been able to get through those ups and downs.

"It's about making that adjustment. What's gone is gone and it was very disappointing, the guys would have learnt from it, and now we've got to look forward to the Indian series."

It's an absolute dream to play for NZ and every time you do miss out it hurts, but you've got to respect the decisions.
Tim Southee

Southee played 12 Twenty20 Internationals last year, captaining his side in nine of them in place of Kane Williamson, who was either out rested or injured. Now that the regular captain will take up his duties, Southee wants to help Williamson get back in the groove.

"I enjoy thinking about the game and it makes you think outside of what you're doing," he said of his experience as captain. "I also try to help Kane out as well – it's nice to have those senior guys [helping you] and Ross [Taylor] was good having captained the side in the past.

"It's a different challenge when you captain and it's something I enjoyed, but Kane's doing a great job, so I'll just try to help him out."

New Zealand will play five T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests against India at home. The long tour begins with the first T20I in Auckland on Friday, 24 January.

Looks who's being an idiot,We saw Rohit and Rahul in ODIs,both are slow starters and it's becoming a problem,I would recommend Prithvi Shaw,Mayank Agarwal as an opening partner for Rohit because both are aggressive,Rahul can be opener for T20 which is his best format but not in ODIs.

Iam not telling to drop him,Iam telling that captain needs to fix his actual position which is not opening(unless Rohit is dropped or retire).

When did I tell Rohit has to be dropped?
I said both are slow starters which is a problem,When Rohit,Dhawan started opening, Dhawan started playing aggressive and Rohit holding from one end that's why this opening is successful,We need an aggressive opener from ball one and Rahul takes time to set.

and how do you suppose Kohli can do that without experimenting or trial and error? Rahul hasn't probably played 30 Odis together, so it is still somewhat debatable which position suits him the best, bit of an experiment in jamodis is pretty normal is you ask me. You yourself are not clear about why you are blaming him. Don't be a cynic just for the heck of it.

I want boult back in the test team. I want india to face a full strength n.z team. Hate when key players get Injured.

anyway they only need boult for test. southee and Henry are useless in tests.

hopefully god forbid lockie plays.

If they don't want to open with Rahul then don't make him open. They played him at 3 in the 1st ODI, that didn't work so they played him at 5. Then Kohli started praising him and then in the 3rd ODI when Dhawan got injured he sent Rahul to open again.

If they want Rahul in the middle order then they need to play him at middle order. Not switch him to the opening slot when the position opens itself up and then back to 4/5 when Rohit and Dhawan are both playing. Now that Dhawan is out for the New Zealand series, he'll probably send Rahul to open again. Absolute stupidity. Not only is Kohli screwing up Rahul's mind with the constant changing but it also shows he has no idea what the middle order is and he doesn't want to give anyone a decent run at one fixed slot either. He gave up with the experiment of batting at No. 4 after one match. That's how indecisive and impatient he is.

If we don't experiment in jamodis where do you suppose we do it? In world cups? Rahul isn't opening in Odis, Prithvi Shaw will. If Rahul can't survive this trial and error happening with his spot then he is too snowflake to play international cricket and this is coming from probably his biggest admirer in this forum. He probably played around 30 matches in total, so makes sense to try and find out his best spot through experimenting since he clearly isn't replacing Rohit or Dhawan. I don't give a crap about where he bats in t20.

1st unofficial ODI, India A tour of New Zealand at Lincoln, Jan 22 2020

NZ-A 230-Allout (48.3)

IND-A 231/5 (29.3/50 ov, target 231)

India A won by 5 wickets (with 123 balls remaining)

Looks like Shaw is in red hot form now, So is Gill but unlucky to not get selected in the senior team!.

Which is funny because that's exactly what Kohli did. Experimented with Shankar and Pant at No. 4 in the World Cup even though they hadn't played a single ODI in that position before.

This guy has been experimenting in every match and still hasn't made up his mind even after decent-good performances. Abandoned Kulcha who were doing very well for Jadeja who has already proven to be one dimensional with his bowling and has rarely come off with the bat, dropped Rayudu after one bad series and experimented with three different players at No. 4 during the World Cup, dropped Pant after he had a decent last series after saying people shouldn't chant "Dhoni" at him, Rahul has a good innings at No. 5 then is sent back to open when Dhawan gets injured and might very well open in New Zealand. Our middle order is screwed. Even if he finds the right players for the middle order which he didn't in 2018/19, he'll screw them with his constant shifting and changing of the team.

You're not going to get a settled side by experimenting in every match. Decided who you want for each position and give them a long run at that position. If there's no sense of stability and players are uncertain about their position, we're only going to get what we did in Champions Trophy 2017 and World Cup 2019.

Let's all agree that Kaptaan is a mentally deficient captain.
Whatever limited success we have had is despite his captaincy shenanigans.

Why people are going so hyper here!!

Dhawan is getting aged, so injuries are common at his age.

So next available option should be Rohit and Rahul opening.

If Rohit or Rahul is rested or injured, team will try Shaw. Its all about experiment.

Rahul is good assert to Indian team now. If any pitches which will have 300 + scores, Rahul will good option than Pant.

I am happy with kohli backing the Youngsters and balancing the experienced/Senior players. I see lot of aggression from this team.

Looks like Navdeep Saini is almost confirmed for new Zealand tests replacing Ishant Sharma if he is not fit completely.

Any chances for Bhuvi and Umesh Yadav ??

Not sure about Bhuvi but Umesh chances are there.

Conspiracy theories? He has a thing against Gill and that’s why he is not getting picked imo, didnt say he is threatened by Gill.. hope you see the difference...
Now what he wants Gill to improve upon or be more obedient we don’t know, coz Gill is defn worth persisting.

I agree that Gill is worth persisting but we shouldn't throw ridiculous allegations like Kohli has something against him, Kohli is no tactical genius but his passion towards the game and dedication to his team is unquestionable. I refuse to believe he has a thing against one of the brightest prospects we have. When you are blaming someone you need to provide some sort of evidence to back your claim IMO.

Perhaps the 'Conspiracy Theories' part was poorly constructed by me and didn't mean no insult. You are one of the sanest voices here which is why I was surprised to see such strawman point coming from you.

My expectations from Kohli are higher than say Rahane , Rahul or Rohit. I expect him to do well and create a great team and bench but his selection in batsmen across formats leaves a lot to be desired.
Now we are getting Samson when its time for Gill... there is a delay is selections.

I would always criticize him but what he does matters to me and also what he says(as can be seen in my signature) but Kaptaan sometimes thinks he knows best .. which he doesn’t.

kohli is punjabi
gill is punjabi

don't think they have beef. unless he thinks gill can be better than him?

Would love Rohit and shaw opening with Rahul coming in the middle. Shaw is Sehwag V2.0

Virat - KL Rahul will be keeping for India in the T20 series vs New Zealand starting tomorrow and he will be opening as well along with Rohit Sharma.

Questions will certainly be asked of a struggling team, but the leadership can’t always be judged by results, said India skipper Virat Kohli, putting up a stout defence when asked regarding his under-fire New Zealand counterpart Kane Williamson.

Williamson’s leadership skills came under the scanner following New Zealand’s crushing defeat in the Boxing Day Test against Australia as former skipper Brendon McCullum questioned some of his tactics. New Zealand was drubbed 0-3 in that series.

McCullum said Williamson has gradually lost his love for the role and can quit captaincy in at least the T20 format.

Williamson himself said he was willing to make space for a new leader if New Zealand Cricket (NZC) suggests the same.

“For me it’s always been about what’s best for the team. If those discussions are to eventuate and collectively there’s a thought that it (finding new captain) would be best for the team, then my stance is whatever is right and fits the group. I’m always open to whatever is going to move the team in those directions,” Williamson said.

However, Kohli who leads India in all three formats, said people are sometimes too quick to blame captains for a team’s failure.

“These kinds of things do come up every now and then, whenever you have a setback. I think it's a part of having that responsibility of captaining in all three formats.

"One thing that I have done is I just focus on what I can do for the team and the vision that needs to be there to take the team forward,” said Kohli on the eve of the T20 series-opener.

“I don’t think leadership can always be determined by the results. It’s also about how you can get the team together and get the guys functioning under you as well, which I think Kane has done wonderfully well.

“He has the respect of his team-mates and he has their trust is what I can see, and he’s also a very, very smart cricketer. If a team outplays you, you have to accept it as a collective failure, and not a lack of leadership or captaincy, is what I think.”

Kohli said Williamson should not be forced into a decision and he should have the freedom to make a choice.

“People get onto that side of things too early and sometimes I think it is better to let the individual decide himself. If you have given him the responsibility, I am sure he will decide whether he is good enough for the job any more or not as well,” he said.
