India tour of South Africa (2021/22)

The Series could be 2-1 either way. Many posters are underestimating SA here.

Looking forward to watching it on Boxing Day but quite disappointed that there will be no crowd.

Johannesburg: Former South Africa pacer Allan Donald praised the Indian team, saying that they are a quality side. While expecting a close contest between India and South Africa, Donald also recalled Test captain Virat Kohli’s comments in terms of performing overseas, believing it worked in transforming his team into a formidable side.

“Kohli’s comments a few years ago were that you’ll never be classed as a great side if you don’t win away from home and that has been something he really worked towards. You saw them win in Australia and also reach the WTC (World Test Championship) Final,” said Donald on Cricket South Africa’s official website.

“There is no doubt this is one of the marquee series in the world game and we can look forward to an incredible battle over the summer. This is a quality Indian team that is here. I’m looking forward to it,” added Donald, who played 72 Tests and took 330 wickets for South Africa. Also Read - Proteas Are No Pushovers, But India Has Firepower to Match That: Ravi Shastri

The 55-year-old former pacer, who was a central figure in the 1992/93 series and also played against the Indians on home soil in 1996/97, pointed out that the performance of South Africa’s young and slightly inexperienced batting line-up will be critical in deciding the outcome of the series.

“For me that is where the series will be decided. In the last few seasons, we haven’t scored enough runs and that will be the challenge. If we can put the runs on the board, we undoubtedly have the bowlers who can take 20 wickets. There is a really good balance to our attack, and it will be interesting to watch.”

“Both teams line up really well, both have strong bowling line-ups and that will mean the batting on both sides will be tested. Our batting has lost some key players in the last couple of seasons. There’s no hiding from the fact that it’s a young line-up and they will be tested by the Indian attack.”

The first of the three-match Test series between India and South Africa will start from December 26 at SuperSport Park in Centurion. It will be followed by the second Test at Wanderers in Johannesburg from January 3 to 7 and third Test at Newlands in Cape Town from January 11 to 15.

South Africa Pacer Duanne Names India Batter Who Will Be "Tough" To Bowl At In Test SeriesDuanne Oliver is ready for a battle against none other than Virat Kohli in the three-match India vs South Africa Test series.

Duanne Oliver had actually framed his Test cap with no hopes of a national comeback but after a surprise recall to the South Africa squad, the right-arm seamer is ready for a battle against none other than Virat Kohli. The 29-year-old Oliver, who made his debut in 2017, had 48 wickets from 10 Test matches before he decided on taking the KOLPAK route (which allows overseas players to play county cricket in UK as it was then a part of the European Union) to represent Yorkshire. He harboured hopes of playing for England one day.

However, with Britain exiting European Union, Oliver's hopes were dashed and he was back in his land of birth, playing domestic cricket before being named in the Proteas side for the three Tests against India starting Sunday.

"This will be the biggest series of my career against world class players and it's an exciting challenge. I need to bowl to Virat Kohli. It will be tough but it will also be exciting, probably I will be bowling to one of the top four batters in world cricket," Oliver spoke to Cricket South Africa's media wing.

"For me, it will be like making a statement to them that we are here to compete and are not going to roll over. For me, it's very important to start that first punch," Oliver, whose sudden decision to dump the national team in 2019 had caused quite a stir.

It is understood that his decision to migrate was primarily based on the selection policy where there was mandatory quota for players of colour.

He is now back and believes that he has matured.

"It was a massive surprise as I didnt expect a call up at all. When I came back I felt very welcomed," he said.

But he understands that he has been away from the Proteas dressing room for three years and lot of things have changed since then.

"I haven't been here for three years. So it's a long time and it's special for any person to play for the country. You reconnect those relationships with people you have played three years ago.

"You get to know everyone at a different level. At the end of the day, the job is to keep things simple," Oliver understands that different equations will be at work.

However, what he has achieved as a player for South Africa is a thing of past, he reckoned.

"I think expectation is also quite high but whatever I have achieved three years back is past. I am not trying to look at the past. I am a different person and this is a different squad, so you try to focus on what you want to do as three Test matches are massive." Oliver calls himself a different player.

"I am a different player. Firstly, I am more mature, more grown up now," he said.

Centurion: Indian cricket team’s newly-appointed vice-captain KL Rahul on Friday addressed the media, a couple of days ahead of the first Test match against South Africa at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. From explaining about team’s strategy in the Boxing Day Test to answering about the “very difficult decision” of which batter to pick at No. 5. slot – Rahul showed great maturity in his first media interaction as Team India’s new Test vice-captain. In the absence of injured Rohit Sharma, Rahul is set to don the hat of Virat Kohli’s deputy in the upcoming three-match Test series against the Proteas.

The 29-year-old indicated that the visitors might opt for the “tried and tested” five-bowler strategy in the first Test against South Africa but agreed that the choice between Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer for the number five slot is a tough one. Asked if playing four bowlers, which allows an extra batter in the line-up becomes a workload management problem for the team, Rahul replied in an affirmative. Also Read - SA vs IND: Playing at Home Obviously Gives us Little Bit of an Upper Hand, Says Dean Elgar

“I think more teams have started playing [five bowlers], because, you know, every team wants to pick up 20 wickets, and that’s the only way you can win a Test match,” Rahul said during a virtual media interaction.

“Workload also becomes slightly easier to manage with five bowlers and when you have that kind of quality (in Indian ranks), I think, we might as well use it,” the senior opener made it amply clear that a fourth pacer will play.

Shardul Thakur, because of his superior batting skills holds an advantage over senior pro-Ishant Sharma, it could mean that only one among Iyer, Rahane and Vihari will get a look in.

Rahane ‘Key Member’ of India Test Squad

With a five-bowler combination, it seems likely that Rahane, who averages 19.57 in 12 Tests this year, will be locked in a three-way tussle for the No. 5 slot along with Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari. Iyer recently made a century on Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur, while Vihari warmed up for the series with three back-to-back half-centuries during India A’s tour of South Africa.

“It is a very difficult decision to make obviously. Speaking about Ajinkya, he has been an important member of the Test team, played very, very crucial knocks in his career,” Rahul was waxed eloquent about his senior teammate.

“In the last 15-18 months, if I can think back, his knock in Melbourne was really really crucial; it helped us win a Test match. That partnership with [Cheteshwar] Pujara at Lord’s in the second innings where he got a fifty was really important, and that ended up in us winning the Test match. So he’s been a key player for us in the middle order, and he’s a very, very strong player,” Rahul added.

“Shreyas obviously has taken his chances and got a brilliant hundred (along with a fifty) in Kanpur and he is very exciting. Hanuma has done the same for us, so it’s a tough decision”

It was but only natural that Rahul, as a part of team management, kept cards close to his chest. “We will start having a chat today or tomorrow and you will get to know in a couple of days’ time.”

Nothing Changes After Becoming Vice-Captain

Rahul is the new deputy to Virat Kohli in absence of an injured Rohit Sharma and for him his primary duty is to give the team a good start and if required provide his skipper with technical inputs.

“I have always enjoyed the responsibility and as an opener, we have the responsibility of providing good starts. Now, maybe a bit more involvement with regards to making strategy with the captain. Maybe pass on some more information and take some pressure off Virat,” concluded Rahul.

Its been raining quite heavily in Centurion as stated by ex SA test cricketer, Fannie DeVilliers who lives nearby.

The Proteas will be without superstar wicketkeeper/batsman Quinton de Kock for the second and third Tests against India, but skipper Dean Elgar says family comes first in this team.

De Kock will play in the Boxing Day Test at Centurion, but will be unavailable for the second Test in Johannesburg and the third in Cape Town, with him and his wife expecting the birth of their first child in early January.

Elgar confirmed on Friday that there had been no changes to those plans, and while he acknowledged it was a blow to lose a player of De Kock's obvious ability against such challenging opponents, he pointed to the bigger picture.

"Fortunately and unfortunately, Quinny is not available because of the birth of his child, and rightly so," said Elgar.

"It's the biggest moment for him in his life and you have to respect his duty to be a new dad.

"It's disappointing not to have him around, but in saying that, a new life is coming into the world. We've always respected new fathers or fathers-to-be within our team and family comes first for us."

While De Kock's absence should pave the way for a third Test cap for Kyle Verreynne, Ryan Rickelton is another option with his inclusion in the 21-man squad.

"It might just be another game of cricket, but for a lot of guys around it's a lot more," Elgar said.

Play on Sunday starts at 10:00.

Should be no excuses for india not to win series here, unless their fans start crying about the toss every game like last time.

Should be no excuses for india not to win series here, unless their fans start crying about the toss every game like last time.

What was excuses for Pakistan when this same South Africa team whitewash them on the last tour?

Last time around ABD saved South Africa, coming to bat at 12/3 in Capetown first test and playing a counter attack knock followed by a cameo in second inning to put South Africa to driving seat.

Then in the 2nd test, he scored another counter attacking 80 odd coming to bat at 3/2 and took SA to a match winning total. That series was a great chance for India to win but they messed up with poor selections, captaincy and match winning knocks of ABD.

This time not sure who will save South Africa but one thing is for sure, this Indian batting lineup is even worse than one in the previous tour. Back then the middle order trio were in great form, currently they are more like burden.

NDTV Sports: South Africa vs India: ODI Team Selection Delayed To Get Clear Picture On Captain Rohit Sharma's Fitness Status, Says Report.

The BCCI has decided to delay the selection committee meeting for the ODIs in South Africa till the end of this month to get a clear picture on new white-ball captain Rohit Sharma's left-hamstring injury status. Rohit has been doing his rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) but it could still take some time for the Indian captain to regain full fitness.

"The team selection meeting will happen after the first Test. It could be on December 30 or 31st but the BCCI is yet to take a final call. Rohit is pulling all stops to get fit but hamstring injuries are a bit different from other injuries.

It has been learnt that Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are unavailable for selection. About Rohit, a call will be taken closer to the selection date," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Jadeja and Axar's unavailability has opened the door for R Ashwin to make an ODI comeback after four years.

Earlier, the selection meeting was supposed to be held just after Hazare Trophy but it has been pushed back only to ensure that Rohit gets a chance to pass the fitness test.

In case Rohit is not fit in time for the ODIs, KL Rahul will be leading India for the first time in a bilateral series.

"It could well happen that Rohit is not fit by the time of selection cut-off but then with the first ODI still three weeks away, he could get enough time to be with the team and regain full fitness closer to the date.

“In that case, he can be selected subject to fitness. These are things that chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma needs to check," the official said.

As of now, Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad are the two youngsters who will be part of the ODI squad on the basis of their performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy.

M Shahrukh Khan's name, who has impressed one and all as a finisher during the Hazare Trophy, might come up for discussion.

It needs to be seen whether selectors pick him for this tour or keep him ready for the home series against Sri Lanka and West Indies as a T20 option.

Shikhar Dhawan, the veteran opener despite his poor run of form in the domestic event, might be retained.

KL Rahul has been appointed as Team India's ODI captain in Rohit Sharma's absence. The newly-appointed full-time ODI skipper is out with a hamstring injury and will need some time to recover. Rahul was recently named his deputy in T20Is and was sort of confirmed to take over the role in ODIs too. He will be assisted by Jasprit Bumrah, who has joined the leadership group for the first time.

The selectors have rewarded IPL and domestic cricket performers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Venkatesh Iyer. Ruturaj won the Orange Cap for piling up 635 runs in IPL 2021 and followed up 603 runs in 5 matches of Vijay Hazare Trophy. His tally includes 4 centuries.

The find of the 2nd phase of IPL 2021, Venkatesh also carried his form in domestic cricket and scored 379 runs for Madhya Pradesh in Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also dismissed 9 batsmen in 6 matches. Since there's no Hardik PaKL Rahul will captain the Indian cricket team in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, with white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma being ruled out due to injury. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been named as vice-captain of the team for the three-match series. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Chetan Sharma informed in a virtual press conference on Friday that Rohit is undergoing rehab to recover from his injury. "We decided not to send him because he can work on his muscles. Needs to get 100 percent fit for World Cup. All selectors had a good chat with Rohit," Chetan Sharma said in the press conference.

Rohit was earlier ruled out of the squad for the ongoing Test series against South Africa too. KL Rahul has been deputising in his place in the Tests. The 18-member squad includes senior opening batter Shikhar Dhawan and also has the likes of Ruturaj Gaekwad, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer have been named in the squad and they will form India's strong middle order.

Ravichandran Ashwin has been recalled to the ODI fold after a long time. He will have leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and offie Washington Sundar for company. The pace department will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, who has been given the additional responsibility of being the vice-captain of the team. He has the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj for company. Mohammed Shami has been rested for the series.ndya in the squad, Iyer will the first-choice pace-bowling all-rounder.

Former skipper Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah are among players who have returned to the ODI fold after 9 months. All these players were part of the squad for the Test series against England and had to miss the Sri Lanka tour. They haven't played a 50-over game since March 2021. The three ODIs of the series will be played on January 19, 21 and 23.

Squad: KL Rahul (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaekwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Y Chahal, R Ashwin, W Sundar, J Bumrah (Vice-captain), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj

India fined for slow over-rate in the first Test against South Africa

ndia have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa in the first Test held in Centurion.

Andrew Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after India was one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.11 of the ICC Men’s World Test Championship Playing Conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, India will lose one point from their points tally for this offence.

Captain, Virat Kohli pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

Umpires Marais Erasmus, Adrian Holdstock, Allahudien Paleker and Bongani Jele leveled the charge.

The Proteas have it all to do after a difficult return to Test cricket this past week when they went down to India by 113 runs in the first Betway Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

The three-match Freedom Series is their first taste of red-ball cricket for six months following their mid-year tour to the West Indies.

And they found it difficult to start with on day one when they allowed India to score an imposing 272 for three on the opening day when KL Rahul (123) and Mayank Agarwal (60) lead the way.

Although South Africa did fight back with the ball – they eventually bowled India out for 327 in their first innings – it was their batting that was the biggest disappointment as they could only manage scores of 197 and 191 in their two innings, scores that eventually lead to a first-ever Test loss to India at Centurion.

Former Proteas batsman Hashim Amla, a man with more than 9000 Test runs for his country, believes the outcome of the first Test was a justified one.

“It was a fair result,” he said. “Centurion is notorious for becoming more difficult to bat as the days progress.

“So once India won the toss, batted and scored in excess of 300 it was game on for the Protea batters to match that score at the very least.

“Being 130 runs behind is what really hurt them, and it ended up being the difference.”

South Africa’s bowling attack was without one of their premier pacemen in Anrich Nortje after he was ruled out of the series due to injury.

But Amla felt the bowlers fought back well after that tough opening day.

“Day one, the pitch looked best for batting and credit to the Indians for playing disciplined cricket,” he continued. “It’s obvious when teams come to SA that their batsman talk about leaving well outside off stump and that’s probably were the Proteas let themselves down.

“Not challenging the defence enough. That was day one, but on day two, though, they did extremely well to restrict the Indians to 327. They could have got to 400 plus.”

Amla, a legend of South African cricket having played in 124 Test matches, said he was hardly surprised by how well the Indians bowled in the match.

“They have been a strong unit over the last two years or so,” he explained. “They have more experience collectively and it always makes a huge difference when you have runs on the board to back you up.”

Apart from the way the bowlers fought back, Amla said he enjoyed watching one Proteas batsman in particular.

“The bowlers all had their moments. Lungi (Ngidi), KG (Kagiso Rabada) and the youngster (Marco) Jansen stand out of course,” he says. “However, in a relatively low scoring match I enjoyed watching Temba Bavuma. He always looks like he has time and seldom troubled.”

Looking ahead to the next Test match, Amla acknowledges there is work to do for the South Africans, although he still believes they can bounce back and defend their proud record of having never lost a home series to India.

“There’s certainly a way back but it’s going to take laser-like focus for extended periods and a touch a fortune,” he added.

“Our two best batters in the middle are Temba and Quinton (de Kock). Now that Quinton has opted out of Test cricket, this cripples the batting line-up further and really, now more than ever, it makes it imperative for Temba to bat higher.”

“Be it three or four, allow him time to play a solidifying role as opposed to a recovery one.

“(Captain) Dean (Elgar) and Aiden (Markram) are class players with a pedigree for hundreds and if they get momentum, it would certainly ease the nerves and give much needed confidence for the younger guys.”

The second Betway Test takes place from 03-07 January at Imperial Wanderers in Johannesburg.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is pleased to announce the squad of 17 that will take on India in the three-match, Betway One-Day International (ODI) series in the Western Cape from 19 to 23 January.

Left-arm seamer, Marco Jansen has received his first call-up to the One-Day squad, while Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the series after not recovering sufficiently from his hip injury and is continuing with his rehabilitation.

Wayne Parnell and Zubayr Hamza are retained from the Netherlands ODI tour while Dwaine Pretorius makes a welcome return in the all-rounder arsenal alongside Andile Phehlukwayo and Parnell.

CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang said:

“This is a very exciting group and the Selection Panel and I are eager to see what they will produce.

“For many of our players, it does not get bigger than playing against this powerhouse Indian team and this will be the biggest series of their young lives so far.

“We are looking forward to seeing what they bring to the table and wish Temba (Bavuma) and Mark (Boucher) all the best for the series.”

https://sports.ndtv.com/south-africa-vs-india-2021-22/sa-vs-ind-virat-kohli-ajinkya-rahane-on-the-brink-of-major-milestone-in-tests-2684840

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane are in sight of a major milestone going into the second Test match against South Africa from January 3, slated to be held at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Both Kohli and Rahane could join the elite list of Indian players with 100 catches or more in Test cricket. While Kohli is only two catches away from the 100-catch mark, Rahane needs a solitary catch to complete 100 catches for India in Test cricket.

Only five former India players have completed 100 or more catches in Tests. The list is headed by the former captain and current head coach of the Indian cricket team, Rahul Dravid, with 209 catches. VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammad Azharuddin complete the rest of the top five with 135, 115, 108 and 105 catches, respectively.

Kohli and Rahane could possibly breach the 100-catch landmark in the second Test against South Africa. India currently lead the three-match Test series 1-0 and will look to double their lead as they try to force their way towards their maiden Test series triumph in South Africa.

Talking in a pre-match virtual press conference, coach Dravid lauded Kohli's attitude and work-rate despite the "noise" surrounding him following the ODI captaincy saga.

"He has been a credit to himself and Indian cricket over the last two weeks despite all the noise there has been around him," said Dravid.

"I know there has been a lot of noise on other issues; a little bit outside of the group even leading to this particular Test match. You know, honestly, in terms of keeping the morale high, it's not been very difficult because to be honest it has been led by the skipper himself," Dravid added.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAIN: NO NEED FOR PROTEAS TO PANIC

Proteas captain Dean Elgar has complete faith in his team and is confident that South Africa can bounce back and draw level in the Freedom Series when they face India in the second Betway Test starting at Imperial Wanderers in Johannesburgon Monday.

The hosts lost the opening match by 113 runs at SuperSport Park in Centurion where their batting proved to be a major disappointment, but they are now aiming to right the wrongs of that match, which was their first piece of red-ball action for over six months.

There was some rust in the system too as the South Africans failed to score more than 200 in both their innings. However, they will be aiming for a far better outcome at the ‘Bullring’.

“We’ve had a few very good conversations since the first Test finished,” Elgar said ahead of the game. “The message that we’ve come out with is we don’t need to panic as a unit.

“I still think we’ve got a lot of capable players within the side even if some of them are quite inexperienced, but they also have to take the responsibility. One or two poor innings with the bat does not make them bad cricketers and backing them is an extremely important thing going forward in Test cricket. That’s how you build and grow your Test team.

“With the ball there’s areas to improve on as well and we know we can get better in the second Test. We just need to break things up, go back to basics and work harder when it comes to execution.”

India has never lost a Test at the Wanderers where their five visits have yielded three draws and two wins. This time, though, the South Africans will know that they will have to win in order to keep their prospects of victory in the series alive.

The pitch itself at the famous stadium has usually been bowler-friendly, but Elgar is expecting a better surface for his batsman this time around. Either way, the skipper knows they have to stand up to the Indian attack.

“I think the surface will play a lot better than it has in recent times,” Elgar stated. “They have a new groundsman now in Evan (Flint) and I think he’s been trying to make it more batting friendly or a little bit more of a better cricket wicket that creates better Test cricket.

“But irrespective of how the wicket plays, us as batsmen we have to put our hands up. We have to take more ownership and responsibility of the positions we’ve been given. Hopefully it works that way.

“We’ve been echoing a lot of positivity within the group and one or two innings’ doesn’t make a player a bad cricketer. You’re only one knock away from being in form and there’s plenty of positives to take into the second Test.”

The Proteas will have one enforced change for the game after the retirement of Quinton de Kock from Test cricket, who was in any event unavailable due to the impending birth of his first child.

Kyle Verreynne will start behind the stumps, but a final decision over the starting XI has not yet been made.

“We have been chatting around the possibility of changes,” Elgar added. “Obviously Kyle Verreynne comes in for Quinny, which was already something we were aware of and we’d planned around.

“We haven’t yet made up our minds just yet about what other changes there may be.”

The second Betway Test takes place from 03-07 January at Imperial Wanderers in Johannesburg.

The series is being broadcast live on SuperSport and SABC 3, with live updates on the Official CSA App.

NDTV Sports: 2nd Test: Virat Kohli Misses Out Due To Upper Back Spasm, KL Rahul Captaining India.

India suffered a huge setback before the start of play as captain Virat Kohli was ruled out of the match due to an upper back spasm.

India suffered a massive setback just ahead of the toss for the second Test against South Africa as captain Virat Kohli was ruled out due to an upper back spasm. Opening batter KL Rahul is leading the team in Kohli's absence with India aiming to win their first-ever Test series on South African soil.

Right-hander Hanuma Vihari, who was part of the India A squad for the South Africa tour, has come in as replacement for Kohli in the playing XI. Apart from that there are no other changes in the Indian team from the first Test.

"Unfortunately Virat has had an upper back spasm, the physios are working on him and hopefully he'll recover for the next Test," KL Rahul said at the toss.

The opening batter said that he was "really honoured" and looking forward to captaining the side.

"It is every Indian player's dream to captain his country. Really honoured and looking forward to this challenge. We have had a few good wins here and hopefully we'll look to continue that. Hanuma Vihari comes in place of Virat. Just the one change.

"It was a good Test at Centurion overall. We really performed well as a team and are really excited about this match."

India had won the opening Test in emphatic fashion, beating the hosts by 113 runs at the SuperSport Park in Centurion to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

If India win the second Test in Johannesburg, they will take an unbeatable 2-0 lead, thereby clinching their first-ever series win in South Africa.

In a media release, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah had been appointed vice-captain for the second Test.

“The BCCI medical team will be monitoring him during the course of this Test match. KL Rahul will captain the side in his absence. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain for the 2nd Test," the BCCI release said.

The BCCI also revealed that Shreyas Iyer was not in contention for selection for the playing XI due to a stomach bug.

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has noted the confusion concerning the allocation of hospitality tickets for the South Africa and India series.

Consequently and noting the need to clarify this situation, CSA wishes to emphasise that the decision not to sell tickets for the series was due to the necessity not to compromise the bio-secure environment the teams are playing under. However, CSA is still contractually obligated to issue hospitality tickets to its commercial partners and guests travelling with Team-India.

Therefore, attendance of matches by commercial partners is a contractual commercial deliverable, in pursuance of partner obligations. No hospitality tickets are being sold nor available for sale.

CSA regrets that cricket fans are presently not able to attend matches, owing to the restrictions that have been occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic and very specific conditions of a bio-secure environment. CSA is hopeful that soon fans will be able to attend live matches and enjoy their sport of choice.

CSA further thanks the public for its understanding and for supporting the national team.

Washington Sundar Tests COVID-19 Positive Ahead of ODIs in South Africa

India’s tour of South Africa, 2021-22

Jayant Yadav & Navdeep Saini added to ODI squad for series against South Africa

Team India off-spinner Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa after testing positive for COVID-19 during the camp in Bengaluru. Sundar was supposed to travel to Cape Town with the ODI members on Wednesday and join the rest of the squad ahead of the ODI series starting January 19th.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jayant Yadav as replacement for Sundar.

The Committee also added fast bowler Navdeep Saini to the ODI squad as a back-up for Mohammed Siraj who is still recovering from his hamstring injury that he sustained in the 2nd Test against South Africa in Johannesburg.

India’s ODI squad: KL Rahul (Captain), Jasprit Bumrah (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Md. Siraj, Jayant Yadav, Navdeep Saini.

South Africa's white-ball skipper Temba Bavuma believes that a series win over India in the upcoming three-match ODI rubber will give the home team a "hell lot of confidence" going ahead. The last time India came to South Africa in 2018, they won the six-match series 5-1. It was also their first-ever ODI series win in the Rainbow Nation. "We will have to get things right in the next ODI series against India. I'm not too worried about what happened in that 2018 series. I'm more concerned about establishing our own style of play and implementing our strategy to good effect.

"An ODI series win against India would give us a helluva lot of confidence, and some momentum ahead of the games to follow," Bavuma was quoted as saying by 'Daily Maverick'.

Bavuma, who was a part of the Proteas' triumphant campaign in the just-concluded three-match Test series, feels their campaign in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup helped change perception about South Africa's white-ball squads.

In the mega event in the UAE, South Africa had won four out of their five group matches, only to miss the semi-finals on the basis of net run-rate due to their loss in the tournament opener against Australia.

"Perceptions are changing about this South African white-ball team. In the past, it was said that we lacked the ability to take on spin and that we struggled in overseas conditions. I feel like we proved a lot of people wrong at the T20 World Cup.

"We've just got to keep building towards that next T20 World Cup in Australia, which will require another shift in mindset." He said the ODI squad must look to take heart from the T20 team's showing during the World Cup in the UAE.

"Perhaps we should take heart from what the T20 side has accomplished in recent times. That team didn't place much emphasis on results, but rather on the process.

"We really came to grips with how we wanted to play. There was a lot of energy and intensity, especially with regard to our fielding," he said.

"Then we start to win consistently. Since the beginning of the West Indies series last June, we've won 13 out of 16 T20s. It's something we want to replicate across the formats. If we bring the same energy to our ODI approach, we will build more confidence and momentum, and the big results will come."

Paarl (South Africa) (AFP) – Two deposed captains, Virat Kohli and Quinton de Kock, could play significant roles in a three-match one-day international series between South Africa and India, starting at Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday.

Both former skippers have the potential to be the leading batters for their respective sides.

For Kohli, it will be the first ODI series since Rohit Sharma was named captain by the Indian selectors in December.

Even though Sharma had to withdraw from the series in South Africa because of injury, the captaincy was not returned to Kohli but was passed to KL Rahul.

Kohli, who captained India in 95 ODIs with a 65-27 win-loss ratio, made it clear after India's Test series defeat last week that he could speak about the coming one-day games purely "from a player's point of view".

Kohli, who subsequently stepped down from the Test captaincy, said: "You are obviously very driven and motivated to perform in any match you play for India. As an individual I can definitely say that I am looking forward to the ODI series and I am driven to perform in those ODI games."

De Kock was made South Africa's long-term white-ball captain in February 2020 and was made Test captain for four matches last season. But he did not seem comfortable in the role and a decision was made last March to put Temba Bavuma in charge of the white-ball teams, with Dean Elgar taking over as Test captain.

De Kock, who was already due to miss the last two Tests against India on paternity leave, announced after the first Test last month that he was retiring from Test cricket, although he remained available for limited-overs games.

The series marks De Kock's return to action for the first time since becoming the father of a baby daughter. He fell to two indifferent shots in his final Test match and South Africa will be hoping for a return to the free-flowing, motivated batsman who hit three centuries in successive matches against India eight seasons ago.

The series is not part of the International Cricket Council's World Cup Super League but South Africa in particular will be keen to record their first one-day series win since beating Australia 3-0 in March 2020 before cricket was effectively shut down by the coronavirus pandemic.

Since then, series against India and England have been aborted because of the virus, they have lost against Pakistan and Sri Lanka and have had to share the honours against Ireland and the Netherlands.

One match was lost, one won and another rained off in Ireland and the first match of a series against the Netherlands was washed out and the remaining matches postponed because South Africa was placed on a coronavirus travel "red list".

India won the only two ODI series they played in 2021, at home against England and away against Sri Lanka.

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has welcomed the addition of star batter Quinton de Kock ahead of their three-match ODI series against India.

De Kock, who was already due to miss the last two Tests against India following the birth of his daughter, the shockingly announced after the first Test last month that he was retiring from Test cricket.

The Proteas wicketkeeper batsman remains available for limited-overs formats and this series will mark his return to action as a father for the first time.

Despite the loss of De Kock, the Proteas staged a fighting comeback to seal the Test series, with Kyle Verreynne slotting in as the new keeper.

De Kock makes a welcome return to the Proteas batting line-up after a mixed Test performance and takes his vital position as opening batsman alongside Janneman Malan.

"It's good to see Quinny again, we obviously missed him as the Test team. He has made a decision and it's one that we respect," Bavuma told reporters on Tuesday, ahead of the opening ODI in Paarl on Wednesday.

"Having Quinny within the team has been good. I don't want to put words in his mouth but knowing him, he'll have a point to prove."

De Kock's last ODI outing came in July where he smashed 120 off 91 balls to help steer the Proteas to draw the ODI series 1-1 against Ireland in Dublin.

In this series, De Kock (5 355) has the opportunity to overtake former Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis as the ninth-highest South African ODI run-scorer, requiring 152 runs to eclipse Du Plessis' 5 507 runs.

Proteas coach Mark Boucher had nothing but praise for newcomers Keegan Petersen and Marco Jansen, who starred for South Africa in their 2-1 Test series triumph against world number one, India.

The Proteas will be looking to record their first one-day series win since beating Australia in March 2020.

Bavuma hopes that the Proteas can use their 2-1 Test series win as momentum against India, who defeated South Africa 5-1 at home in 2018.

"It's a different format and different skillset and different type of pressure. But I think from a momentum and confidence point of view that's well within the team," said Bavuma.

"We'd be leaning on that to help inspire the other new guys and get us through the challenges we'd be facing over the next three games."

The first ODI is scheduled to start on Wednesday at 10:30 in Paarl.

CAPE TOWN: Proteas seam bowler, Kagiso Rabada, has been released from the team for the Betway One-Day International (ODI) series against India due to high workloads over a sustained period of time and the need for him to recover prior the outbound Test series against New Zealand next month.

No replacement will be brought in for him as there is an extended squad in place in the Bio-Secure Environment (BSE), but George Linde has been retained from the Test team as an extra spin-bowling option for the series.

I haven't been following SA cricket that much of late especially ODI's, is Janneman Malan still part of the ODI setup? If so, has he kicked on from that Australian series in 2018?

Yeah, he has played 11 games out of 13 played by SA since then. He has scored well with 600 plus runs, but SA has not faced many good ODI sides after Aus.

Great to hear, I can't wait to see him again. He plays proper cricket shots, a bit like Rilee Rossouw (perhaps without as much power)

Disappointed with India's selection.

They had Shaw and Dhawan as openers in the Sri Lanka series but here they have all of a sudden sabogated Shaw and picked Ruturaj. This is lack of clarity in terms of who they want to develop as third opener.

lol leave that selection we ain't pick a genuine allrounder for the odi series i don't know who's gonna bat in no 7 position

The fact that we persisted with Jadeja for so many years should tell us how much a lack of option that position is for us. We just don't have any quality genuine A/R in our team for LOIs.

Thakur or Sundar can be developed for the role

Former India pacer RP Singh has reacted to the decision to rest captain Rohit Sharma for the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa. Rohit had a below-par Indian Premier League season with the bat as Mumbai Indians finished bottom of the IPL points table. He ended the season with 268 runs from 14 matches, failing to score even a single fifty. RP Singh feels that there was no reason for Rohit to take a break for the South Africa series.

"I think he should've played the series. Taking rest or not is his personal thought. It depends on how much fatigue he is experiencing. But I don't think there was a need for a break. He should have played. It's a long series and, remember, he is the captain as well," RP Singh said during an interaction on India TV.

Speaking further on Rohit's poor form, RP Singh highlighted that the 35-year-old has not been consistent in the IPL for the last three-four seasons.

"In the IPL, Rohit hasn't scored over 400 runs in the last few seasons. There are many others who have crossed the 400-run mark. His performances have been inconsistent in the tournament but he used to come up with a couple of match-winning knocks. So, everyone felt the spark in his batting was there. In the shortest format, you need match-winners. Even if they fire in a couple of matches, the team will win those," he added.

In Rohit's absence, KL Rahul will lead Team India against South Africa.

The first T20I will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Thursday, June 9.

IND Vs SA: Dwaine Pretorius Wants To Inculcate MS Dhoni's Calmness And Self-Belief

Preparing for the upcoming T20 series against India, South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius on Monday said he would like to inculcate the legendary MS Dhoni's calmness and self-belief.

The South African made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings this year after joining the franchise for a base price of Rs 50 lakh.

Pretorius played just six matches, scoring 44 runs and claiming six wickets with best bowling figures of 2 for 30.

The limited opportunities notwithstanding, Pretorius said playing alongside Dhoni has been his biggest gain.

"Playing my first IPL was a great experience. It was one of my bucket list items and that too to get the opportunity to play for CSK, one of the most successful franchises. I enjoyed every moment of it. You get a lot of responsibility as a player.

"I really enjoyed playing under Dhoni as well and batting with him, seeing the brand value he has in India just shows how big he is and what he has done for the sport in this country. It was awesome being a part of that," the 33-year-old said.

"The biggest thing that I have learnt from him is how calm he is at the crease, the way he takes the pressure off himself and tries to put it on to the bowler.

"He made me realise that at the death it's actually the bowlers who are under pressure. It was a fresh mindset and also he doesn't get too excited and is always optimistic.

"He believes he can do anything and I am going to try to bring his calmness and self-belief into my game," Pretorius added.

Asked about the series against India, Pretorius said it is a great opportunity for some South African players to cement their places in the national team ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia. It would also be great to know (the strengths and weakness) of the Indian team going into the World Cup.

"A strong performance in this series is key for players keeping the T20 World Cup in mind. India is a strong T20 side and if we do well in this series, we can consider ourselves as strong contender," he said.

"Performances in this series is going to go far to secure a spot in the World Cup.

Pretorius is targeting the series to establish himself as one of the best all-rounders in world cricket.

"You test yourself as a player against some of the best T20 players of the world. Personally, I want to push myself and make a good impact for the team. From a personal note, I want to win the series going into the World Cup.

"I want to establish myself as a leading T20 all-rounder in this series going into the T20 World Cup," he said.

The ICC T20 World Cup will be hosted by Australia from October 16 to November 13.

The five-match T20 series between India and South Africa starts here on Thursday, followed by matches in Cuttack (June 12), Visakhapatnam (June 14), Rajkot (June 17) and Bengaluru (June 19).
