But lost one test in WI also one in UAE - Twice in last one year.

Ind lost to WI in test in 2002 i.e. 15 years back !

Listen no need to bitter about the total demolition in the CT final .....OKAY? Loosing to SL ain't gonna help either

well you lost to them in t20.. shame.. Pak whitewashed them 3-0, 3-0

Enjoy the victory in T20 cricket, we will be happy with No. 1 Test Ranking and without embarrassing defeats to WI and ZIM lately unlike Pak.

5 ODI matches wit SL ? OMG, seems like Rohit and Kohli's morales are really low !

Oh here we go again! Give the cricketers some freaking break you greedy BCCI

BCCI to appoint new coach before Sri Lanka Tour

India will tour SL for three tests, 5 ODI's and One T20I after WI tour.

You're playing in England next summer for 5 Tests, touring South Africa in Jan-Feb 2018 and touring Australia in the winter of 2018.

Will keep an eye out for this - was a good series in 2015.

The Test venues include Galle and Kandy which usually produce good pitches and for interesting matches.

Looks like some people haven't learned anything following the CT.

They just cant help but keep running their mouths.

:afaq

Let's see how it ends up this time....

India need to try Kuldeep in the tests and ODI's . I heard Pant is in the squad, could give him a shot too . !

Sure ... Let's see how it will fare in upcoming tours for both teams :19:

TIme to test youngsters and see who has got it in them to succeed in tougher tours like SA.

Kuldeep, Pant must be tried. Otherwsie, this will be the most useless tour ever.

SLankans will come hard at Indians... :murali

After Geeli Maachis ( Wet Match Box ) insult ; I expect our SLankan brethren to give them hard fight :sanga

Who are the SL supporters at PP? Are people annoyed with Sehwag in Sri Lanka?

You're playing in England next summer for 5 Tests, touring South Africa in Jan-Feb 2018 and touring Australia in the winter of 2018.

And these toured were penciled in long ago. People who think India is somehow scared of playing in these countries need to look at stats / facts: India is the only Asian team to tour these "difficult" places regularly over the past 10-15 years and in the coming years. These countries in fact don't bother establishing regular cadence of tours with other Asian teams (you should ask them why).

If India had avoided playing here (like a few others do -- wink, wink!), we'd have never lost our #1 ranking in Tests.

Wow that is alot of cricket. Hopefully Pakistan can also get some games in summer.

What's more embarrassing is on a daily basis you are on a Pakistani website... talk about obsession

Indian squad reaches West Indies, without coach

NEW DELHI: India, after finishing runners-up in the ICC Champions Trophy, arrived in the West Indies for five ODIs and the only T20 International starting on June 23.

The Indian team have included chinaman Kuldeep Yadav and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant while opener Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for this tour.

India ended as the runners-up in the recently-concluded Champions Trophy after suffering a defeat by 180 runs at the hands of arch-rivals Pakistan.

On the other hand, West Indies failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy as they were not among the top eight ODI teams as per ICC rankings on Sept 30, 2015.

Earlier, West Indies drew the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan 1-1 at home. They lost the first match by 64 runs after Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan bagged a record 7-18 in the match. The hosts later won the second match and the third was called off due to rain.

Who will televise this here in UK? No one is showing Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe here but that's understandable as it's only Zimbabwe (although the series has been fairly entertaining) but India will attract a bigger audience. Is anyone showing it here in UK then? Last year Eurosport showed Sri Lanka vs Australia so I am hopeful

India Tour Of Sri Lanka || Test Squad Announced

Squad: Virat Kohli (C), Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhinav Mukund.

Rohit Sharma returns to the squad. Karun Nair and Jayanth Yadav dropped.

When was the last time either of those teams won a world tournament?

:salute

India did win the one before the latest one, I mean CT. Anyways, it's a tournament the ICC has been thinking of scrapping since the last few years, a tournament that has very little prestige much like the World T20 Tournament.

Regardless, what has that got to do with you being the 6th ranked Test and ODI team?

KL Rahul Ruled Out Of The First Test Due To Viral Fever

Injury-prone India opener KL Rahul has been ruled out of the first Test starting July 26 against Sri Lanka due to viral fever, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) release. "The BCCI medical team confirms that opening batsman Mr. KL Rahul is presently down with viral fever. There are no major health concerns and he is making rapid progress, much to the satisfaction of the medical team," the release said.

"As a precautionary measure, Mr. KL Rahul is advised further rest and hence will not be available for selection for the first Test match against Sri Lanka, which starts on July 26 at Galle," the release added.
Rahul scored a fine half century in a tour match in Colombo, his first competitive game in close to four months due to an injury lay-off. He is now down with fever and did not travel with the team from Colombo. He also missed Monday's practice session here. Now, Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund are likely to open for India.

The team's other regular opener, Murali Vijay, too pulled out of the series at the last minute saying he had not fully recovered from a wrist injury.

After making a solid 54 against Sri Lanka Board President's XI in Moratuwa last week, Rahul had said that he was nervous about his fitness.

"You know that you are physically fit and you have done everything that you can, worked really hard, you are feeling stronger, you are feeling fitter," Rahul told bcci.tv.

"But the mind always tells you what if it happens again, what if you have to go through the same grind for three months, what if your shoulder is not ready, what if you [have] come back early?"
The Karnataka batsman had just come out of a four-month long break after he injured his shoulder during the four-match series against Australia.

Hosts Announce Squad for First Test

Sri Lanka announced their squad for the first Test match against India. Rangana Herath will lead the team in absence of Dinesh Chandimal, who has been ruled out due to Pneumonia.

Dhanajaya De Silva returns to the team, taking place of Chandimal. Seamer Nuwan Pradeep has also returned to the squad but there has been a surprised inclusion of uncapped left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara.

The 30-year-old has not played any international cricket but is an experienced campaigner in first class cricket, he has 558 first-class wickets at an average of 19.85, and is among the top three wicket-takers in the Premier League Tournament.

De Silva was always expected to make a comeback after Chandimal was ruled out. Pradeep comes into the team in place of Dushmantha Chameera.

Meanwhile for India, opener Shikhar Dhawan is set to replace Murali Vijay in the upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka in the Island Nation. Vijay has complained of pain in his wrist while playing a preparatory match. The same wrist injury had troubled him during the last Test series against Australia at home.

Sri Lanka: Rangana Herath (C), Upul Tharanga, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Asela Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella, Dhananjaya de Silva, Danushka Gunathilaka, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Malinda Pushpakumara, Nuwan Pradeep

Basically 2 more debutants for Sri Lanka. One actually played last year in a Test match and only bowled 12 balls and the match wasn't abandoned. Talk about giving chances to young youngsters..... :danish

Don't remember India drawing a series in England last time they toured

For anyone interested, this series will be broadcasted exclusively on Sony MAX for UK and Europe viewers. Shame for me as I don't have this channel and feel this will be a close series in all 3 formats. Predictions

Test Series drawn 1-1
ODI Series: SL 2-3 India
T20: India to win

The Aussies are going to be touring Bangladesh; South Africa are touring England. Care to explain how India can play them at the moment?

Expecting a good test series. Sri Lanka batting is decent, worried about there bowling other than Herath it doesn't seem potent enough.

KL Rahul out of 1st Test due to viral fever.

Is this guy ever fit? So much talent and cannot stay fit.

I think India is going smash the hell outta Srilanka. Srilanka has absolutely no chance against the best test team in the world.

Herath is used to getting 15 wickets per match alone. prob is for that SL has to give India Turners

Sri Lanka had a more stable team in 2015 yet still lost 1-2 to India. I expect India to win this series given Sri Lanka just about managed to overcome Zimbabwe and drew with Bangladesh at home earlier this year.

Gunaratne out of action for 6-8 weeks

Asela Gunaratne, who suffered a thumb fracture on day one of the first Test between Sri Lanka and India in Galle, has been ruled out of the entire tour, the island's cricket board said today.

Gunaratne had "sustained an intra articular comminuted fracture to his left thumb," SLC said in a statement and announced the all-rounder had undergone "reconstructive surgery in Colombo last evening."

"Medical experts have indicated Gunaratne will be out of action for a minimum of 6-8 weeks, and will be returned to full mobility under a strictly managed rehabilitation regime over the period."

Gunaratne sustained the injury when he dropped Shikhar Dhawan at second slip off the bowling of Lahiru Kumara in the 14th over.

Dhawan was on 31 runs when Gunaratne dropped the catch and he eventually went on to score his fifth Test ton.

India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: What type of pitch will Sri Lanka prepare?

In first test, Sri Lankan Captain R. Herath asked curators to prepared 'Batting Pitch' against India. He expected his team to outbat India just like they did against Zim. I must say a total misjudgement from Sri Lankan management, providing India a batting pitch is asking for trouble and end result is for everyone to see.
Now, Herath and co. are left with lot to wonder for their second test that starts next week. What will be their strategy to stop rampage Indian team? What pitch will they want to prepare for second test?

Will Sri Lanka prepare Green Wicket in second test match like they did in 2015 series against India? On greenish wicket i would still think India will outbowl Sri Lanka just like they did two years ago.

I think Sri Lanka's best chance to beat India is if they prepare 'rank turner'. As Australia showed us earlier in the year, Indian team is vulnerable too on a rank turner against decent spinners, Sri Lanka could try to do something similar. :smith

What do you guys think what is the best pitch condition to beat this Indian team? And what will be the starting 11 look like from both teams?

Sri Lanka are expecting to welcome back skipper Dinesh Chandimal for the second Test against India, a helpful boost for the hosts after India completed a comprehensive victory in Galle on Saturday. Chandimal took over from Angelo Mathews as Test skipper earlier this month but missed the first Test after he was hospitalised due to pneumonia.

Veteran Rangana Herath, who himself is hopeful of playing the second Test after suffering a finger injury in Galle, was confident of Chandimal's return in Colombo this week. "There's no confirmation, but I expect him to play the next game," Herath said. There was bad news, however, for batsman Asela Gunaratne, who will be out for up to two months after breaking his finger on the opening morning of the first Test.

Herath, who bowled just nine overs in India's second innings and didn't bat on Saturday, was hopeful without being certain that he would play the second Test. "We had an x-ray yesterday," he said. "It doesn't show any fracture. "But I had a fracture three years ago in the same area and that's the reason there's a bit of swelling and soreness. Hopefully over the next few days it will get better." While the injuries to Herath and Gunaratne no doubt hurt the hosts in Galle, the stand-in skipper lamented how India were able to dominate the match from the opening session.

"We are a better team than this, we certainly are," the veteran said. "I felt that it was after a long time a team score 600 runs against us. We should have bowled better. "The other point is most of our batsmen got closer to three figures and got out, whereas the Indian batters made big hundreds. "That was a big difference too in the game. That's an area that we need to work on moving forward."

India's win helped them extend their lead at the top of the ICC's Test rankings and they could grab a lead of up to 15 rankings points if results go their way over the coming weeks. Victory to England over South Africa at The Oval in the coming days would extend India's lead over the Proteas to 11 points and a 3-0 series sweep would put Virat Kohli's side even further ahead of the chasing pack.

Sri Lanka is a nothing team at the moment. Not surprising to see them being taken apart by a good Indian side.

SL struggled to beat Zimbabwe at home - that truly shows their plight currently. Their batting has weakened significantly and the talent seems to have dried up. Indian beating them up isn't a big deal to be honest. Surprisingly their captaincy is changing hands like the 90's Pakistan captaincy, which is very unlike SL of past.

Looks like Herath has been ruled out of the third Test with a back injury.

Good for him. He was totally ineffective and was thrashed in the first 2 Tests. He can concentrate on the next series and take rest for now.

Yuvraj Singh dropped for Sri Lanka ODIs, Manish Pandey recalled

NEW DELHI: Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Shardul Thakur have been included in India's ODI and T20I squads in place of the rested R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami, but the big news is that Yuvraj Singh has been dropped for Manish Pandey. Yuvraj has lost his place having tallied 109 runs in his last six ODI innings.

Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah also expectedly return for the limited-overs series in Sri Lanka starting August 20, having been rested for the recent tour of the West Indies, as does KL Rahul who missed the Champions Trophy in June on account of injury. The 25-year-old batsman has not featured in an ODI since January, but on return to the Test side has produced scores of 57 and 85.

Yuvraj, 35, began India's campaign at the Champions Trophy in June with a match-winning 53 off 32 balls against Pakistan but his form trailed off thereafter, with scores of 7, 23* and 22. He played in three of five ODIs in the West Indies, managing 57 runs in 75 balls with a highest of 39.

Pandey's recall has come on the back of a strong one-day triangular series for India A in South Africa, which the side won: scores of 55, 41*, 86*, 93* and 32* to be named Player of the Series. The 27-year-old was last in the Indian setup in January for the home ODI and T20I series with England. He played two of the T20Is, scoring 3 and 30, but last featured in an ODI in October 2016. Named in India's Champions Trophy squad, Pandey returned to India because of an injury that flared up.

With Rohit back - and named vice-captain - it is likely that Ajinkya Rahane, Man of the Series in India's ODI series win in the West Indies, will slot back into the middle order where he last batted during the tour of Australia in January 2016. However, he will vie for a spot with Pandey, Rahul and Kedar Jadhav. In the West Indies, playing his first internationals since 2014, Karthik scored 2 and 50* in two ODIs and top-scored with 48 off 29 deliveries in the one-off T20I.

Left-arm spinner Axar returns to the Indian team for the first time since October 2016, when he played the last of his 30 ODIs. Axar, 23, is already in Sri Lanka with the Test team, as replacement for the suspended Jadeja. From that India A squad, the legspinner Chahal has also won a recall. In four matches, he claimed four wickets and a fine economy rate of 4.37. The uncapped Mumbai pace bowler Thakur was the leading wicket-taker for India A in South Africa with nine from four matches, conceding runs at just 4.34 per over.

From India's previous ODI assignment, the tour of the West Indies in June-July, the other players to be dropped are the 19-year-old Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik. Karthik had replaced Pandey in India's Champions Trophy squad and then for the trip to the West Indies, where he scored 2, 50* and 48.

Ashwin, Jadeja and Shami and Umesh Yadav have been rested keeping an eye on home series against Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka followed by India's tour of South Africa in the new year. Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav's eight wickets in his first ODI series - in the West Indies, which India won 3-1 - left quite an impression on Kohli, and at 22 he finds himself leading the team's spin attack. With Shami rested, the pace-bowling quotient comprises Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Thakur.

The ODIs will be played on August 20, 24, 27, 31 and September 3, and the T20I on September 6. This is the first time that Kohli will lead India in a limited-overs contest in the country.

India last played ODIs in Sri Lanka in 2012, when MS Dhoni's team won a five-match series 4-1. Dating back to 2005, India have only lost one ODI series in Sri Lanka, a tri-series held in 2010; they won series in 2008 and 2009 (twice) and then five years ago.

Squad: Virat Kohl (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma (v/c), KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur

Ranatunga slams Sri Lanka board over whitewash

Colombo - Former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga blamed Sri Lanka's cricket board on Tuesday for the squad's crushing three-Test series whitewash on home soil against India.

Ranatunga said Sri Lanka's XI could not be faulted for the humiliating 3-0 drubbing described by skipper Dinesh Chandimal as the worst series of his career, but squared the blame entirely with management.

"Sri Lanka cricket is going through the worst period," Ranatunga told reporters in Colombo.

"You can't blame only the players, they are demoralised. It is the fault of the management."

The comprehensive series defeat compounded woes for a side beset by injury woes and leadership changes.

Ranatunga renewed calls for Sri Lanka Cricket chief Thilanga Sumathipala to be sacked, and urged the International Cricket Council to investigate management at the board.

Last week, Ranatunga, 53, told AFP there was no "proper discipline" in the national side, which has suffered a string of humiliating home defeats in recent months.

"We don't have selectors with a backbone," Ranatunga said, referring to the panel headed by Sanath Jayasuriya, a former teammate of Ranatunga's 1996 World Cup-winning side.

Ranatunga has accused Sumathipala of involvement in gambling - a charge which would preclude him from a board position at Sri Lanka Cricket - and urged the ICC to investigate. Sumathipala has vehemently denied the allegations.

Sumathipala told AFP last week that Ranatunga was leading a smear campaign against him in a bid to wrest leadership of the board for himself.

"Every time the game is affected at the middle, Sri Lanka cricketers are not performing to the expectation, we hear this kind of noise coming from the same quarter," Sumathipala said.

Since retiring from the game, Ranatunga has entered politics and was an unelected cricket administrator in 2008.

Last month he demanded an investigation into Sri Lanka's 2011 World Cup loss to India, which was marred by allegations of match-fixing.

I hope India break 444 record in one of the ODIs. Do you think they can?

I still don't like out odi team and odi captaincy of Kohli. Don't think they will go past 400 in any of the games. Our openers will play safe for 15 overs. They will win the series tho mainly due to sl team being crap, especially in Odis.

Indian openers play as if its still 1980s play safe
I really wish we could get aggressive openers perhaps push KL Rahul to open with Dhawan and push Rohit down the order.

Openers are good. But our captain and his strategy is what I don't like. Openers are capable of going after bowlers during power play.

The same Rohit who scored 250+ as an opener?

The same Rohit who scored 250+ as an opener?

Rohit once settled he can take apart any attack on his day, but we all know those days are rare and in event like worldcup you cant plan based on luck. Id personally take KL Rahul over Rohit anyday.
Rohit can do late order hitting

Sri Lanka has 'too many cooks', admits Pothas

DAMBULLA: Sri Lanka’s cricket coach Nick Pothas has blamed outside interference for a string of poor performances, saying frequent changes to the selection line-up had made his job “very difficult”.

Pothas hit out after Sri Lanka, who suffered a 3-0 Test whitewash at home last week, went down to India by nine wickets in the first of five one-day internationals in Dambulla on Sunday.

“You do get angry — to say ‘too many cooks’ is probably accurate,” the former wicketkeeper-batsman told reporters in Dambulla. “You get frustrated. Am I angry with the players? Absolutely not. The players work as hard as anyone can ask of them. They’ve been superb. Support staff have been out of this world. Brilliant. They work endless hours with planning and helping the boys. You can’t fault anyone within that changing room.”

Sri Lanka’s woeful run has continued since their first-round exit in the eight-team Champions Trophy in June followed by an embarrassing 3-2 ODI loss to minnows Zimbabwe at home.

The Sanath Jayasuriya-led selection committee has fielded 40 players in ODIs since taking over in May last year.

Pothas, who took up coaching duties after Graham Ford quit mid-contract end of June, said there had been too many changes.

“When you get consistency within a team of players, you will see improvements in performance,” said the 43-year-old. “When we’re getting new players every game, it gets very difficult from a confidence point of view. From the player’s point of view it’s very difficult. It’s difficult for us — the coaching staff — to create a strategy.”

There have been reports of a power struggle emerging after 1996 World Cup hero Asanka Gurusinha was appointed manager.

The result of the current series apart, Sri Lanka need to win at least two of the five games to gain a direct entry into the 2019 World Cup in England.

Sri Lanka government set up crisis panel to arrest cricket's rapid decline in the country

Colombo: Alarmed by the Sri Lankan cricket team's rapid decline in recent times, the government is setting up a crisis panel to address the concerns plaguing the former world champions.

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said on Wednesday he is to set up a special four-member panel consisting of senior officials who would convene a seminar within the next fortnight to look into the poor performance.

Sri Lanka's national team is having a bad run since 2014, with the retirement of greats such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan.

They have lost their number one ranking in T20 while sliding badly in the Test and ODI tables.

This panel would involve former players, captains, former selectors, coaches, international experts, provincial cricket organisations and media.

They would discuss the poor showing by the national team and look to identify the problem areas, Jayasekera told reporters.

Since 2014, Sri Lanka lost home series twice to India, including the recent 0-3 Test whitewash in addition to defeats against Pakistan, Zimbabwe in the ODIs and the first-ever Test loss to Bangladesh.

Most recently, a section of the crowd unleashed its anger on the players after the team's nine-wicket thrashing by India in the first ODI, chanting 'no to politics, give us our cricket back'.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) management has come under fire for interference in team selections.

These 2 Teams are a total mismatch! But what can the Indians do? They are playing with cards that are dealt to them! I am sure, if the roles were reversed, SLs would lay into the Indians too. In any sport, when you play against a Team, you either teach a lesson or learn one yourself .... well .... the SLs have learned a lot, I guess!

In late 90s and early 00s Lankans were our nemesis. I still remember the defeat in 1996 SF against them. Also under Ganguly, we lost few finals(tri series/asia cup) against them. It was like we just couldn't overcome them when we really need to. They also knock us out in 2007.

But under Dhoni, we changed our luck and started handing them defeats(sweet payback). Now under Kohli, we are literally toying with them. I just feel sad to see them struggling so bad.

Even Indian A team would thump this Sri Lankan team.
Agree with you "Total Mismatch"

Dinesh Chandimal out of the series with broken finger

When things go wrong, it looks like the entire world has turned against you. I do sympathize with the SL team and fans - injuries after injuries and luck not going their way. Chin up folks...these times would not last forever..

Sri Lankan selection committee headed by Sanath Jayasuriya resigns

The Sri Lankan selection committee, headed by Sanath Jayasuriya, has resigned in the wake of the team’s disastrous showing in the ODI series that followed the 0-3 Test whitewash against India and a loss to Zimbabwe.

Along with the former batsman, Ranjith Madurasinghe, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Asanka Gurusinha and Eric Upashantha have also resigned, according to a notification from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Sports.

As per a Sri Lanka Cricket official, the board has ‘not officially accepted’ this resignation as on Tuesday evening. Until that confirmation comes through, they will continue to be in office.

Even after this acceptance of resignation, it is understood that they will be in office until the end of the Indian tour on September 6, when the visitors play their last match of the trip, which is a solitary T20I match in the capital.

Surprisingly, this selection committee had been given a six-month extension to their tenure in May. It is still unclear how this further affects the position of Gurusinha who is also the Sri Lankan team manager and was added to the selection committee in April this year.

Sri Lankan cricket has been on a downward curve for quite some time now. Earlier in the year, they failed to beat Bangladesh at home across series in any of the formats.

Then, they were knocked out of the Champions Trophy in England from semi-final contention by Pakistan, even if that wasn’t a disappointing result on the whole.

However, a 3-2 defeat at home to Zimbabwe in ODIs, followed by 3-0 whitewash at the hands of India in the Test series, and now already surrendering the five-match ODI series 3-0 has meant that the selectors have bowed to increasing pressure.

The talk is that Kapudera opted to bat instead of bowl despite teammates and selectors ordering him to bowl. Can SL_Fan confirm ?

Lasith Malinga appointed captain for 4th ODI
Veteran takes over for fourth ODI against India to be Sri Lanka's fifth captain in the past seven games as selection panel quits en masse

Veteran quick Lasith Malinga will captain Sri Lanka in the fourth ODI against India on Thursday, his team's fifth captain in just seven games of what has been a horror campaign for the home side.

Sri Lanka confirmed on Wednesday that Malinga would captain the team in Colombo this week, two months after he was fined and handed a suspended ban for comments he made after the ICC Champions Trophy in June.

The latest captaincy shift comes as Sri Lanka's selection panel released a lengthy statement confirming they had resigned following a horror stretch that has seen them win just four of their past 15 matches across all formats.

Malinga's elevation to the captaincy comes after Chamara Kapugedara, who led the side in the third ODI on Sunday, was ruled out for the rest of the series due to a back injury.

Kapugedara had been named captain after regular ODI skipper Upul Tharanga was banned following an over-rate offence in the second match of the series.

The hosts had also used two captains in the preceding Test series, which they lost 3-0; veteran spinner Rangana Herath filled in for skipper Denesh Chandimal in the first Test before Chandimal returned for the final two matches of the series.

Having suffered an embarrassing ODI series loss to Zimbabwe in July that saw Angelo Mathews quit the captaincy, then narrowly avoiding a Test defeat, and with India holding an unbeaten record on this current tour, national selectors confirmed on Wednesday that they have decided to step down.

In announcing their resignation, the selection panel – comprising of former players Sanath Jayasuriya, Asanka Gurusinha, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Eric Upashantha and Ranjith Madurusinghe – said the recent crowd violence from fans angry with the recent results contributed to their decision.

"We wish to state this decision is made in the best interest of the game, which is being damaged and hindered by undue criticism and false allegations instigated by interested parties with malicious intent," a statement read.

"This instigation has led to a public outcry, which in both the short and long term is damaging the present and the future of the game by demoralizing the players and creating an unfair, untrue and hurtful image of the team, the coaching staff, the selectors, and the administration.

"The heartbreaking incidents of unruly behaviour we witnessed at Pallakelle last Sunday were the last straw for us, and we feel that it will serve this sport we love better if we step down, rather than allow the influence of these dark elements to poison the minds of our people who have always been the greatest supporters in the world, and damage not only this great sport, but the reputation of our country, our people and our proud culture.

"We leave with tears in eyes, but with our heads held high as we know that Sri Lanka Cricket is working to a very defined and strategic plan, building from the foundation upwards, and as with all masterpieces, the results take time to show."

In June, Malinga was banned for a year (suspended for six months) and fined 50 per cent of his next ODI match fee after he hit back at a claim by sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara that the Sri Lanka team was unfit.

Following Sri Lanka’s Champions Trophy group-stage exit, Jayasekara said the team’s poor fielding display throughout the tournament was due to substandard fitness and their "big bellies".

Malinga’s responded to the minister’s comments, saying: "I don’t care about criticism from those who are simply warming chairs. What does a monkey know about a parrot’s nesting hollow? This is like a monkey getting into a parrot’s nest and talking about it."
