Former captain Rahul Dravid will coach the Indian limited-overs team on their tour of Sri Lanka in July as current head coach Ravi Shastri will be busy with Virat Kohli's Test side in England during that time.

Team India will be heading to Sri Lanka to play a series of 3 T20Is from 22nd, 24th and 27th July. The squad, which is expected to be selected later this month, will need a support staff for the tour as the current crop of coaches will be in England at the time where Kohli's team will be taking on Joe Root's side in a series of 5 Tests from August 4.

Dravid, who had been the batting consultant for the Indian senior team on their tour to England in 2014, is the current head of cricket operations at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He also monitors the progress of the India A and U-19 teams.

Senior players like Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are expected to headline a young Indian team in the limited-overs series in the island nation and will get to work again with Dravid, who has coached most of the current crop of youngsters during his stint as India A and U-19 coach.

Incidentally, the Indian team last won a Test series (1-0) in England under Dravid's captaincy back in 2007. Dravid led India to victory in the 2nd Test in Nottingham while the other two matches they drew at the Lord's and The Oval in London to clinch the Pataudi Trophy. Australian great Greg Chappell was India's coach back then.

The current Indian Test squad will be quarantining in Mumbai for 14 days before leaving for their England tour. They will first face New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship from June 18 at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton before beginning their preparations for the Test series against England.

England will host India in the five-match series in Nottingham, London, Leeds and Manchester between August 4 and September 14

For the second time in the history of Indian cricket, two national teams will be on foreign tours at the same time. While the Test team led by Virat Kohli will be in the UK for the World Test Championship final and the five-match Test series against England, India's white-ball team will tour Sri Lanka.

Since both Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be in the UK, the Men in Blue will have a new captain for the Sri Lanka series. The names of Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya have been making rounds for few weeks now. Shreyas Iyer will also be a strong contender if he is fit.

While the fans are anxiously waiting for the BCCI's announcement regarding the same, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has made his pick. Speaking on his youtube channel, Kaneria named Sanju Samson as his captaincy pick. He backed his case by saying that Samson should be the next captain in line.

"Shikhar Dhawan is likely to get India's captaincy in Sri Lanka. Not Shaw, Samson… but Dhawan. But if it were up to me, I would have to go with Samson. We should be ready, that in future, if Virat is willing to step down as captain, then he should be the next in line. We have to be ready that if Kohli isn't around, we need to groom someone. So I would go with Samson but Dhawan remains a strong contender," Kaneria said.

Samson, who has 83 runs in 7 T20Is, was dropped following his below-par performance in Australia. He only managed 48 runs in 3 T20Is in Australia and was dropped for the home T20Is series against England. The absence of senior players could definitely open the doors for his comeback but he isn't a captaincy candidate.

Samson has captained Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kerala in senior cricket. Under him, RR were placed at the 5th spot in IPL 2021, which was suspended earlier this month. Dhawan, who is likely to lead Team India, is a two-time vice-captain while Pandya has captained India A once. India tour Sri Lanka for a white-ball series in July.

Team India To Undergo 14-Day Quarantine In Mumbai Ahead Of Sri Lanka Tour: Report

India's white ball squad, led by Shikhar Dhawan, will quarantine in Mumbai from June 14 to 28 and undergo six RT-PCR tests on alternate days before flying off to Colombo for the six-match series against Sri Lanka, starting on July 13. It is understood that all the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that will be followed by the Lanka-bound squad will be same as those of the first team currently in the United Kingdom for the World Test Championship final and five-match series against England.

"All the rules will be same like we followed in England. The outstation players will come by charter flight and some fly business class of commercial airline," a BCCI source privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"They will do seven days of room quarantine and then can meet in common areas inside the bio-bubble. The players will do gym sessions in staggered manner."

While the three-match ODI series starts on July 13, it is expected that Indian team will have match simulation practice (situational training) after individual sessions, following three days of room quarantine at the team hotel in Colombo.

"It will be just like what's happening in England. Match situations will be created and that's how the intra-squad training will be held.

"You can't have your main players get out off the first ball and not bat again or bat for the whole innings. Everyone needs training so it won't be practice games as such," the source said.

The Indian teams over the years have always stayed at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo.

Is'nt shreyas Iyer selected? i thought he was a shoe in for being captain....
and looking at the long time big pic why SD as captain when he has no chance to lead India in place of VK....
even manish pandey has an outside chance....
any ways...am most intrested in seeing Varun - hope he fires - a different type of bowler...

Shikhar Dhawan and Rahul Dravid all smiles ahead of Sri Lanka tour: 'Say hello to India's captain and coach'

Shikhar Dhawan and Rahul Dravid will be India's stand-in captain and coach, respectively, on the Sri Lanka tour with Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the vice-captain.

hikhar Dhawan and Rahul Dravid are breaking the internet after posing for a picture together as India's official captain and coach for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour.

Dhawan will be leading a new-look Indian team in the 6 white-ball games in Colombo while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named his deputy. Former skipper Dravid will coach the young cricketers on the tour which comprises of 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is from July 13 to 25.

"Say hello to #TeamIndia's captain & coach for the Sri Lanka tour. We are excited. Are you?" the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Dravid, speaking to reporters in a virtual press conference, said a lot of the players will be looking to cement their position in the Indian team by performing well in Sri Lanka.

"For sure, a lot of players are looking forward to cement their places in the ICC T20 World Cup. There will be a few players who are pushing for places. But the key focus in the two sessions that we had so far, has been on winning the series. That is going to be our primary objective.

"But hopefully, people will get some opportunities to put in some good performances in the course of winning the series and knock doors of selectors,” Rahul Dravid said.

“These are only 3 T20 games before the T20 World Cup. The selectors and management will have an idea by now about what they’re looking for.

"There is the IPL before the WC. In that sense, there may be 2-3 places the management and selectors might want to fill. So, it will give them a few more options. There might be a few odd spots to be filled,” the former India captain said.

I remember seeing Dhawan captaining an IPL team in Champions League way back in 2012 or 2013, his tactics were atrocious to say the least. From what i remember, he was introducing his best bowler Mishra after the 10th over and wouldn't use his full quota while bowling with part timers in the first 10.

'This second-string Indian team coming here is an insult to Sri Lanka cricket': Arjuna Ranatunga slams SLC

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga said a ‘second-string’ coming to the island for a limited-overs series is an ‘insult’ to their cricket.

Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain, slammed the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board for agreeing to host a ‘second-string Indian team’ minus the likes of regular skipper Virat Kohli, vice-captain Rohit Sharma. The former Sri Lanka captain said the ‘second-string’ coming to the island for a limited-overs series is an ‘insult’ to their cricket.

"This is a second-string Indian team and their coming here is an insult on our cricket. I blame the current administration for agreeing to play with them due to television marketing needs," Ranatunga, a government minister until two years ago, told reporters at his residence as reported by news agency PTI.

India, for the first time, decided to prepare two different teams for different formats to play at the same time in different parts of the world. While the Indian Test side led by Virat Kohli is currently in England preparing for the five-match Test series against the hosts, an Indian limited-overs side led by senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan is in Sri Lanka to play three ODIs and as many T20Is.

Apart from Kohli and Rohit, the other big-ticket Indian cricketers who are not a part of the Sri Lanka tour are Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant – all of them are with the Indian Test side in England.

The Dhawan-led Indian side, however, has limited-overs regulars like Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav along with a few fresh faces like Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chetan Sakariya.

"India sent their best team to England and sent a weaker side to play here. I blame our board for that," added the legendary batsman, who led Sri Lanka to the 1996 ODI world title.

The visiting team has just completed its compulsory quarantine and would play the home team in the first ODI on July 13.

India's National Cricket Academy chief and celebrated former captain Rahul Dravid is the head coach for the tour as regular head coach Ravi Shastri is in England with the Test side.

Ranatunga also spoke about the current poor run of the Lankan team in the international arena.

Sri Lanka lost their fifth T20 series in a row when they went down 3-0 to England last month.

They were also forced to send back three senior players from the ongoing tour of England for breaching bio-bubble protocol.

Ranatunga said the lack of discipline was also the fault of the administration and when he was at the helm, he did not allow any misconduct.

He demanded the overhauling of the local administration and advocated the appointment of an interim committee to manage Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

Ranatunga was the head of an interim committee politically appointed in 2007-08.

Bowling is pretty weak for ODIs. Sakariya and Deepak Chahar are more T20 specialists. They should have picked one of Avesh or Prasidh for this series too.

Big development as Sri Lankan selector declare, ‘we may pick second string side for India series’

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is in a fix. If the embarrassing thrashing at the hands of England wasn’t enough, now a new problem involving their team is staring them. The Indian team led by Shikhar Dhawan is already in Colombo – but with less than 10 days to the series, Sri Lanka cricket selectors have not been able to pick their squad because of an issue of pending contract signing. According to the reports coming in from Sri Lanka Cricket headquarters, if after arrival from England on 5th June, Kusal Perera led team doesn’t sign central contracts, selectors will pick second-string team to play the 3 match ODI & T20 series against India.

According to a report by Sri Lankan newspaper Daily FT, Chairman of Selectors Pramodya Wickramasinghe has declared that if the players say they cannot sign the contract before the Indian series, the next option left to him and his selectors is to pick players from the 39 contracted players – who are not part of the team currently in England.

“These players are currently practising and playing matches and we will consider them for selection for the Indian series. We have still not selected the squad for the series with India, we will do that after Sunday’s third and final ODI against England,” said Wickramasinghe.

Sri Lanka Cricketers are yet to sign the national contracts offered by the board. Even the team currently on tour of England signed just voluntary declaration forms. It was decided that during the England tour the contentious contract issue will be sorted which till date is pending. SLC has now announced that no voluntary declaration forms will be accepted in the future – which clearly means either players tow the lines of SLC or they will not be picked for the squad for the India series.

“The Executive Committee on the advice of the Technical and Advisory Committee will have to decide whether the players will have to sign a tour contract. Probably that is the only option left because we are not going ahead with voluntary declaration forms anymore,” said CEO of SLC – Ashley de Silva.

The players currently after humiliating performance are on a sticky wicket. But the report claims like the England tour, players are most most likely to adopt the same stance for the Indian series as well and they may not sign the contracts.

SLC made a press announcement made on Thursday that they have signed 39 players on contract categories of ‘Senior’, ‘A’ team and Emerging Squad. These players have been training in the separate groups in Dambulla and Colombo and they stay available for selection for the upcoming tours.

The interesting part is neither test team captain Dimuth Karunaratne or Angelo Matthews or any other big name is part of the list. All of these top players along with players in England have refused to sign contracts and are not part of these camps.

So now the big question is what stance the SLC is going to take if the contract issue is not resolved before the Indian series? Would they play a second-string Sri Lanka team against an Indian side ? Answer for now is most likely yes – but the situation may change on 5th June when the Sri Lankan team arrives from England.

This series is like a banana peel for the visiting Indian team. Imagine losing to this current Sri Lankan lot,
Indian fans will not hear the end of it.

Interesting to see what the BCCI does with Shaw after the team management's request to call him up for the test series in England.

It's a no-brainer decision but after Kapil Dev's public criticism of the request, it's probably likely other ex-cricketers will jump on the bandwagon to criticize Shastri.

The Sri Lankan team touring England is one of the worst for a long time.It looks like the players have lost confidence.££

^^ Second string? As if their first string team is beating top teams left, right and center. :))) :inti

Actually the second string side would have been better placed to play New Zealand than our so-called first side.

^^ Second string? As if their first string team is beating top teams left, right and center. :))) :inti

Lol. Exactly what I thought too.
Srilanka doesn't have any string team at all right now.

I am just wondering the troll India would face if it loses to Srilanka on this tour.

To me, Kapil seems right. It just shows the lack of trust management has in selected players sent to England.

If management rates Shaw this much higher, he should have been sent to England with team only.

Shaw should be part of the LOI series Vs Sri Lanka. He can singlehandedly win us one ODI and one T20 match alone. Without Shaw, we have a good chance of losing to the Sri Lankan team, especially in ODIs because not just Kohli and Rohit, we are also missing the fascinating trio of KL, Pant and Pandya( handicapped with bowl).

In tests in England, Shaw won't do zilch vs Anderson and his boys and it is unlikely that he will start from 1st test so let him play LOIs and cement his spot in World T20s.

I will be very surprise if sl manages to even win one match. They are in for a nightmare. At best sl can hope for few good individual performances.

Suryakumar Yadav reveals how Team India felt about Arjuna Ranatunga's 'second-string side' comment

"We are just here to have some fun, enjoy this series and take a lot of positives from here,” Suryakumar Yadav said in a virtual press conference from Colombo on Tuesday when asked about the team management’s reaction to Ranatunga’s comment.

In what can be termed as the first response from the Indian team in Sri Lanka to the 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga’s ‘second-string side’ comment on the Shikhar Dhawan-led team, batsman Suryakumar Yadav said the players are not really thinking about that and instead are preparing for what he thinks is going to be an interesting series.

Ranatunga had said that BCCI’s decision to send a ‘second-string Indian side’ minus the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit, Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Sri Lanka Cricket agreeing to host them is an ‘insult’ to the Lankan cricket.

“Not really (we don’t talk about that). Everyone is completely focussed. The way the practice sessions are going, the way the game went yesterday, it’s going according to plan and we are really excited for the challenge. We are not thinking about that (this being a second-string side). We are just here to have some fun, enjoy this series and take a lot of positives from here,” Suryakumar Yadav said in a virtual press conference from Colombo on Tuesday when asked about the team management’s reaction to Ranatunga’s comment.

Due to travel restrictions and the quarantine rules in place, BCCI had decided to field two different Indian sides to play in Sri Lanka and England. All the Test regulars are currently in England, preparing for the five-match series against the host while Shikhar Dhawan was named captain and Rahul Dravid the head coach for the limited-overs series in Sri Lanka.

“Two teams playing together… I think that’s the first time (something like this) is happening. I was very excited about it when I got to know,” said Suryakumar.

India are slated to play three ODIs starting from July 13 followed by three T20Is against Sri Lanka, which will be their last limited-overs fixtures before the T20 World Cup in October and November.

Asked about the Sri Lankan conditions, Suryakumar, who might start at No.3 in the first ODI, said the fact that the Indian team landed in Sri Lanka well in advance, will make it easier for the players.

“We have played in these conditions before like for example, we play in Mumbai, we play in Chennai, where the humidity is high. Most importantly, we have come here 15-20 days before the tournament, so think it’ll be good. We played a game also yesterday. The wicket was pretty good, I hope it stays that way but if there are slow wickets, we are going to take time, apply ourselves and see. It’ll be a good challenge,” he said.

All six matches will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

“It’ll be the same for both the teams. Once you get to know about the conditions, you can plan accordingly based on the pitch conditions, ground dimensions,” said Suryakumar.

India v Srilanka is one the most boring Bilateral matches ever now a days. Its just such an over kill. There should be a rule that you can only play against each other once every two years or something.

It's not as bad as it was same time a decade ago.

That used to happen 8-9 years ago. We hardly play against each other these days. :inti

Never liked this Ranatunga guy especially after they won in 1996 world cup. Hope this Indian team gives Sri Lanka a big phainta and Pandya brothers torture them just like Pathan brothers last time they played together. :inti

Imagine if India loses to Srilanka and Pakistan to England.

Lol. Which one will be trolled more?

‘Don't think hosts can complain’: Brad Hogg says India squad in Sri Lanka ‘would challenge all full-strength teams’

Brad Hogg feels that the Indian squad in Sri Lanka is capable enough to challenge any full-strength team across the world.

Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has thrown his weight behind the Shikhar Dhawan-led Team India which is scheduled to take on Sri Lanka in a limited-overs series, beginning from next week. With the regular players being in England for a 5-match Test series, the BCCI named a mix of young and experienced players to travel to the island nation to play 3 ODIs and as many T20Is.

However, former Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga found it ‘insulting’ that the nation’s cricket board agreed to host a ‘second-string’ Indian side. The statement caused quite a stir in the cricketing fraternity as several former players have already voiced their opinions against it.

Meanwhile, Hogg took to Twitter and spoke lauded the strength of the Team which will be coached by former Indian captain Rahul Dravid. The former cricketer feels that the Indian squad in Sri Lanka is capable enough to challenge any full-strength team across the world.

“Looking at the India squad in Sri Lanka, I don't think the hosts can complain. It's a line up that would challenge all full strength teams at the moment #INDvSL,” Hogg Tweeted.

In another tweet, Hogg predicted the result of the upcoming series. He said, "Sri Lanka are having a few issues. India will win both series. Rahul Dravid to disciplined to not have the squad in the right frame of mind."

While the Indian contingent is preparing well for the upcoming challenge, the hosts will enter the series following a disastrous tour of England. The Lankans failed to win a single game in the tour, losing the T20Is 3-0 and the ODI series 2-0. The final Enland vs Sri Lanka ODI in Bristol was washed out due to rain.

They would look to get over a forgettable tour when they take the field against India on July 13 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo

https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/dont-think-hosts-can-complain-brad-hogg-says-india-squad-in-sri-lanka-would-challenge-all-full-strength-teams-101625646215009.html

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has been at the receiving end of a lot of flak since calling India's touring side as 'second string'. While former Indian cricketers and pundits have disagreed with Ranatunga, the 1996 World Cup-winning captain hasn't found support back home too.

The legendary Aravinda De Silva, who played a key role in Rantunga lifting the trophy in 96, also disagrees with his former captain. During an interaction before the start of the limited overs series, de Silva stressed that Indian cricket has so much depth that the team selected for the Sri Lanka tour can not be termed a "second-string" side, as claimed by his former teammate Arjuna Ranatunga.

An Indian team packed with youngsters under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan is in Sri Lanka for a white-ball tour, starting with a three-match ODI series from July 13.

The senior players under Virat Kohli were named for the World Test Championship Final against New Zealand and the subsequent five-Test series against England.

World Cup-winning former captain Ranatunga had slammed the country's cricket board for agreeing to host a second string Indian team, saying that it is nothing short of an 'insult'

"India has got (an) enormous amount of talent going around at the moment and there is no way you call any side a second string," De Silva said during a virtual group interaction.

"If you look at the current way of handling players, looking at current situation(s) world-wide, there is a rotation (of players) all over the world and these players being in a bubble has become very challenging for some of these youngsters, it is not easy," added De Silva.

"….it is very important to keep their minds occupied, maybe it will come to a stage where rotating some of these players, even some of the officials to that extent, because they are put in some of these bubbles has taken the toll on some of these youngsters and officials.

"So, I guess, this method might be something for the future. Even if you send a second string team or third team string, it is not a third string team, it is a rotational sort of (arrangement)," he added.

"…I guess I won't blame anyone for changing squads and sending different squads on various tours, that I guess is going to be the future,” said 55-year-old De Silva, who has played 93 Tests.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had also responded to Ranatunga by saying: "Out of the 20-member India squad, 14 players have represented India across all formats or in some form and not a second-string team as claimed."

De Silva said that the current Sri Lankan team needs balance.

"They need to give the balance sorted out in the national team as soon as possible," he said, adding that balance was one of the hallmarks of the 1996 Sri Lankan team that lifted the World Cup.

"The English tour really showed us where we are at this juncture. It is certainly not a young team. It is quite an experienced team. It is lot to do with the balance of the team, that is where, I felt the combinations we had in those sort of conditions weren't the best,” he elaborated.

Angelo Matthews, the senior-most among current players, pulled out of the upcoming series against India, citing personal reasons, but De Silva wasn't pleased with his decision.

"It is a pity if he (Angelo Matthews) has decided to quit at this stage, because I see him as a guy who contributed a lot to Sri Lanka cricket," he said.

The Data Analyst of the Sri Lanka National Team, G. T. Niroshan, has tested positive for Covid 19.

He was found to be positive, following a PCR Test carried out among the National Players, Coaches, and Support Staff yesterday, following the identification of Grant Flower as Covid Positive.

Niroshan is now undergoing due medical protocols.

India vs Sri Lanka series pushed back due to Covid cases in Sri Lanka camp

The limited-overs series between India and Sri Lanka has been postponed due to Covid-19 cases in the home team's camp. Sri Lanka's batting coach Grant Flower and data analyst G T Niroshan had tested positive for Covid-19 upon their return from their tour to England. The cases have forced Sri Lanka Cricket to extend the quarantine period of the Sri Lanka players from the stipulated three days.

This has in turn pushed back the start of the series to another date. The first ODI will now start on July 17 instead of July 13.

"Yes, the series will now start from 17th of July instead of 13th. The decision was taken in consultation with SLC keeping the safety and security of players in mind," a senior BCCI official told PTI, confirming the development.

As per the original schedule, the series was to start with the ODI leg on July 13, followed by matches on July 16 and July 19. The T20I games were scheduled for July 22, July 24 and July 27.

"The Data Analyst of the Sri Lanka National Team, G. T. Niroshan, has tested positive for Covid 19," Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement.

"He was found to be positive, following a PCR Test carried out among the National Players, Coaches, and Support Staff yesterday, following the identification of Grant Flower as Covid Positive.

While Niroshan's confirmation was given on Friday, Sri Lanka's batting coach Flower tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, 48 hours after the squad's arrival from England.

All the other players who are quarantining have also been tested.

Before testing negative, Sri Lanka's squad had faced an anxious wait for the results of their PCR tests on returning home, following a COVID-19 outbreak in the England squad after the final match of their tour in Bristol on Sunday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has agreed to the request of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to reschedule the forthcoming three ODI and the three T-20i matches but at the same time has demanded the Sri Lankan team be transferred to some other hotel.

According to highly placed sources, the demand was not from the team but was put forward by its board-Indian cricket board- immediately on learning that one more support staff of the host team-GT Niroshan (computer analyst) is Covid-19 positive following batting coach Grant Flower.

Forget second string even a fourth or fifth string Indian side would probably give these hacks a real hiding. I would honestly be surprised if SL mange to compete this series that in itself would be a minor miracle.

India’s series against Sri Lanka is rocked by multiple Covid-19 cases, even before the start of the first match. Hosts’ batting coach Grant Flower and performance analyst GT Niroshan had tested positive for the virus, that had put the series in jeopardy. But now BCCI secretary Jay Shah has come forward and said that the series will kick off on July 18.

“The India-Sri Lanka ODI series will start on July 18 due to coronavirus cases in Sri Lanka camp,” Jay Shah told ANI.

As per Sri Lanka’s Daily FT, SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva said that “in the event that there are more positive cases leading up to the first ODI on 17 July, they were preparing to field an alternate team from the squads that are practising in Dambulla and in Colombo and are in a bio-bubble.”

Meanwhile, there are reports surfacing which suggest that another Lankan player has tested positive. ‘Newswire.lk’ quoted Sri Lankan sources as saying that batsman Sandun Weerakkodi has tested positive for COVID. According to the report in the website, Weerakkodi was with the 15 senior cricketers who were training here while staying at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

The report further stated that Weerakkodi, along with Bhanuka Rajapaksa and several other cricketers, were sent to Dambulla on Friday night to play practice matches ahead of the India series.

The squad staying at Cinnamon Grand also includes Asela Guneratne, Angelo Perera and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and all of them will now have to undergo quarantine.

On the other hand, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Hardik Pandya can make it to the team as a pure batsman. “Hardik proved himself in Australia that he is perfectly capable of playing in the team as a pure batter, there is no doubt now that he can do that,” Manjrekar said during a virtual interaction. I am also reading reports that he has started bowling as well. His bowling, all the more-better for India. He has shown that he has the ability to walk into the team as a pure batter in white-ball cricket,” added Manjrekar.

What is the point of this series? It was only scheduled to generate revenue for SLCB but aparently likes of Ranatunga are not happy with our squad. Just cancel it and send Shaw, Bhuvi & Pandya to England to join the test team.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in consultation with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to reschedule the dates of the ODI and T20I series.

The move is aimed at providing more time for the Sri Lanka National Players and the Support Staff to complete required health protocols before getting onto the field, following the detection of two members (Batting Coach and Data Analyst) of the National Squad as Covid Positive.

Accordingly, the series which was to start on the 13th July 2021, will now be held, as per the, below schedule.

Commenting on the changed schedule, Mr. Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary, BCCI, said: “We understand that circumstances are extraordinary, but the BCCI would like to extend its full support to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) during these tough times for the smooth conduct of the upcoming series. Our medical team is in constant touch with the team of doctors at SLC and together following all safety protocols that will help the series to get underway. We are confident that both nations will put up a spirited show in the days to come and we are in for some exciting cricket.”

Commenting on the BCCI’s cooperation in this regard, Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket said: ‘We are grateful for the BCCI for understanding the situation and agreeing to cooperate with us at this moment of time, as it has done on numerous occasions, during our long-standing relationship.’

Now a player from the alternative Sri Lankan squad has tested positive.

I doubt this series can go ahead.

Some sources say it is alternate player from Sri Lankan squad and staying in a different hotel so don't think this will affect the series.

Another Lankan Player Tests Positive for Covid-19 Ahead of Series

A Sri Lankan player in one of the two bio-bubbles has tested positive for COVID-19 as the virus outbreak continued to rock the home team ahead of its limited-overs series against India. The group of players are training separately even as the virus outbreak forced a postponement of the series by four days after the home team’s batting coach Grant Flower and data analyst G T Niroshan have contracted the virus.

Ind vs SL: Sri Lanka players test negative in latest RT-PCR tests ahead of India series

The entire Sri Lankan first team, including senior players Kusal Perera, Dushmantha Chameera and Dhananjaya de Silva, have all returned negative in their latest RT-PCR tests ahead of the limited overs series against India.

The tests were conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

It is now expected that the players would be allowed to enter the bio-bubble by Monday as they complete a week-long hard quarantine after their arrival from the United Kingdom.

After batting coach Grant Flower and data analyst G T Niroshan, along with another player in a separate bio-bubble, tested positive for COVID-19, the series that was originally scheduled to start on July 13 was pushed back by five days.

"Normally, the moment we get any positive result we announce. There has been another round of RT-PCR tests conducted yesterday and the results were supposed to come today. We only get the results if there is any positive cases," a source in SLC told PTI.

"Since we haven't got any positive report, which we normally receive by mid day, it can be presumed that all players have tested negative," he added.

As far as its revised training itinerary is concerned, it is understood that the Sri Lankan team will be practising at the Khettarama (R Premadas Stadium) here, since the Indians are training at the Singhalese Sports Club ground (SSC).

"If all goes well, the UK-returned players would be able to come out of their hard quarantine (room isolation) and enter the bio-bubble. The robust testing is expected to continue as per norms (every third or fifth day)," he informed.

Once the players get to enter the bio-bubble, they can at least meet each other in their rooms and also start using the gymnasium in a staggered manner.

The outdoor training and skills session (net practice) is also expected to start in the next 48 hours.

Asked about the health status of batting coach Flower and analyst Niroshan, both of whom have tested positive on return from the UK, the source said that there hasn't been any deterioration in their health or medical parameters.

"Grant and Niroshan are at an isolation facility as per protocols. Both are asymptomatic and doing fine as of now. There hasn't been any deterioration of health as per our knowledge. They will complete their stipulated isolation period," he said.

The official is confident that there won't be any more hiccups before the opening ODI on July 18.

One of Sri Lanka's most explosive batsmen Kusal Perera doubtful for India series: Report

In what is set multiply the headaches of an already depleted Sri Lanka side, Kusal Perera did not take part in the practice sessions on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury.

Amid rumours of Kusal Perera being replaced as the Sri Lanka captain for the India series by Dasun Shanaka, reports have now emerged that the former might not even play the limited-overs fixtures due to an injury. In what is set multiply the headaches of an already depleted Sri Lanka side, Perera did not take part in the practice sessions on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury.

The left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman reportedly hurt his shoulder during the England tour but he decided to play through it as he was the captain and one of the most experienced players on tour.

“Medical staff have given an injection to him so he didn’t practice with the team yesterday and today. We have to take a call tomorrow, but it’s not looking good” an SLC official told NewsWire.

With the first ODI slated to begin from July 18, it looks unlikely that Perera will feature in that contest in Colombo.

If the hander does not manage to regain full fitness in time, then Sri Lanka’s batting will suffer a major blow. They are already without Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka, and Niroshan Dickwella – all three were suspended due to a bio-bubble breach in England.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board is yet to name the squad for the India series and confirm Shanaka as the captain but it is likely that Perera will be sacked as captain irrespective of his fitness.

Sri Lanka lost all the matches in the England tour under Perera’s captaincy.

Sri Lanka will host India in three ODIs and as many T20Is. The series was slated to begin on July 13 but was postponed to the 18th due to Covid-19 cases in the Sri Lankan camp. The hosts batting coach, and data analyst had tested positive for the virus and are in isolation.

Sri Lanka’s head coach Micky Arthur and bowling coach Chaminda Vaas meanwhile joined the practice sessions after completing their quarantine.

Sri Lanka going Bad to worse to " Don't have a word to describe it "

Nevermind....I did my own research and found out that FoodXP (Sky Channel 712) will broadcast this series in UK.

FoodXP? :))

- 2021 will be the 37th consecutive year in which India and Sri Lanka would face off in at least a game in international cricket. The last time the two sides did not play against each other in a calendar year was way back in 1983.

- Sri Lanka and India have played against each in 159 ODIs - the most between any two sides.

- A win by a margin of 3-0, 2-0 or 2-1 will give India 93 wins in ODIs against Sri Lanka - the most for a team against an opponent.

Now a player from the alternative Sri Lankan squad has tested positive.

I doubt this series can go ahead.

Sri Lanka board is hungry to make some money and BCCI loves to make some money and get leverage from boards. They will make it happen. Even if the School teams of both sides have to be selected, it will be done.

All I can do is yawn.

I don't recognize a single Sri Lankan player these days.

Sri Lanka cricket board set to make big financial gains amid India series

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the governing body of the game in the island nation, is set to make big gains financially from the white ball series against India staring here on July 13.

"We had initially finalised to host three matches. But after some negotiations with the Indian cricket board, we managed to increase the matches to six which will enable us to raise an additional US 6 million dollars in revenue," SLC president Shammi Silva was quoted as saying in the Daily Star newspaper.

The report also said that the Sri Lankan board stands to earn US 12 million dollars from the six-match series.

"SLC will be able to provide a large income to the country with Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa's vision of building a strong economy through sports," Silva, 60, said.

"We missed out on several tours as scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet we did not reduce the monthly salaries and allowances of our cricketers," Silva said on how the COVID-19 pandemic affected Sri Lankan cricket finances.

"None of their facilities were deducted either. In the face of this situation the cricketers should give out their best display to the country."

True but this series is interesting from a different perspective. We have an ODI team that is more or less settled but few key spots. Like a no.4, a pace AR and our spin combination.

Not the best opponent to judge them against but we won't get many opportunities to do this.

Also hope Ranatunga didn't watch the game, else uffff. That must have a hurt.

I today wanted sri lanka to do good so this series can be interesting, i was looking for some special players and from their side and no dice. Abysmall side of a team, looked worse than Zimbabwe. If Zimbabwe can win a series in Srilanka with Malinga mathews karunaratan they can definetly white wash this team.

Whats the hype with Hasaranga ? He didnt look special, arnold was making it sound like he was the next murali. Just turns the ball 1 inch to the left and one inch to the right, nothing special.

Should India field a C team in the dead rubber 3rs ODI vs Sri Lanka

Not sure if Arjuna Ranatunga will appreciate that but I believe some of the other boys must be given the opportunity to have a ball out there in the middle.

The series is done.

It's over.

Rahul Dravid has done it.

We should play this team..

Padikkal
Shaw
SKY (C)
Gaikwad/Rana
Kishan (WK)
Hardik
Gautham
R Chahar
Varun
Saini
Sakaria

But we'll most probably see Dhawan playing and maybe 1-2 changes.

Sri Lanka have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the second ODI in Colombo on Tuesday.

Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka’s side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.12.2 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, Sri Lanka will lose one point from their points tally during the Super League.

Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Lyndon Hannibal, third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella leveled the charge.
