India have named a young 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series in West Indies.

Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead the side, with Ravindra Jadeja being named vice-captain. India will play three ODIs in Trinidad, starting on 22 July.

India have opted to rest several key members of the squad for the ODI series, including regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah among others.

Shekhar Dhawan returns after a while in the wilderness.

Star batter Virat Kohli himself asked for rest from the entire series against the West Indies, including the five T20Is, according to sources in the BCCI. It is also understood that the T20 squad for the tour of West Indies will be announced on July 11, one day after the shortest format series against England concludes. "It was team management's decision to rest Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah for the ODI series along with skipper himself," a senior BCCI source in the know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The five-match T20 series starts on July 29 in Tarouba, Trinidad followed by couple of matches in St Kitts (Aug 1 and 2) and it concludes in Florida on August 6 and 7 respectively.

"However for the T20I series, all others are playing but Kohli has himself asked for a break. He has informed that he will be available for all series after the West Indies tour," the source informed.

It is understood that senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be recalled for the T20 series in the Caribbean and the USA leg.

"Ashwin is very much in the scheme of things and he will be playing the T20 series in the West Indies. Also Washington Sundar is still not fit to play and by the time he gets fit, he will be playing for Lancashire in County Championship and Royal London Cup," he added.

While Kohli will get his break as he has sought but his place in the national T20 squad for the next big international assignment (Asia Cup in Sri Lanka) will depend on his T20 form in the two games that he will play against England beginning on Thursday.

In between, India are expected to play a short T20 series in Zimbabwe and just like in Ireland, a second string team is supposed to travel to the African nation.

KL Rahul is expected to be fit before the Asia Cup but if he recovers in time for the Zimbabwe tour, he will be part of that short series.

"Obviously, the stars will be rested for the Zimbabwe series as it will be followed by Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, home series against Australia and the team then travels to Australia for the World Cup," the source said.

Deepak Chahar, who is recovering from a hamstring and back injury, is expected to be fit for Asia Cup starting August 27.

India have named an 18-member squad for the five-match T20I series against West Indies.

KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav have been named in the side, albeit their participation is subject to their fitness, but Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal are among those missing.

R Ashwin, who last played a T20I in November 2021, has also been added to the squad alongside other spin options like Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja.

Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, who have been rested for the ODI leg of the tour, find a place in the T20I side.

IPL sensation Umran Malik, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson are missing from the list as well. All three were a part of India's squad for the first T20I against England.

However, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has been rewarded after his impressive debut against England in the opening T20I, where he returned 2/18.

Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today named the 13-player squad to face India in the three-match CG United ODI Series in Trinidad.

Lead Selector, The Most Hon. Dr Desmond Haynes said: “As we all know Jason is one of the leading all-round cricketers in the world and we’re happy to have him back in the team. He will be refreshed, re-energized and ready to go and we can expect to see his brilliance on the field as well as meaningful contributions off the field as well.”

Haynes added: “We had a very challenging three matches against Bangladesh in Guyana so we will be looking to rebound when we face India in the conditions in Trinidad. We have seen some growth among some players, but overall we need to regroup and play better against the Indians.”

The ODI team is pretty weak. Only Dhawan, Jadeja and Chahal plays in the best Indian ODI XI.

Gill and Dhawan should open. Then Kishan and Iyer at 3 and 4. Pandya's place will be filled by Hooda. No Venky Iyer either. In bowling department, hopefully Arshdeep gets a go.

Runs and wickets against ODI minnows should not count. Selectors should not consider whatever performances happen against Windies :inti

Stick to things you understand, please. You clearly don't understand anything about cricket :rabada2

You calling every other series meaningless these days shows how much you understand international cricket. Just stick to low quality IPL and don't bother replying in these threads. :inti

I didn't call every other series meaningless. You either don't have a clue or you're just lying now. Or perhaps both.
I'll reply wherever I want. Deal with it . :rabada2

How pathetic they didn't give Umran Malik a chance in WI but gave it to some trundler Arshdeep Singh lol.

Hope this Indian side gets Trashed

Ahead of the three-match ODI series against India starting July 22, West Indies coach Phil Simmons has some simple requests for the Nicholas Pooran-led side - Bat 50 overs and score hundreds. As simple as it may sound, it's not an easy thing to consistently as West Indies have found out in recent times. West Indies have played out 50 overs just six times in 39 innings since the 2019 World Cup.

While most teams thrive at the opportunity of playing in home conditions, West Indies have been struggling big time, losing seven out of their eight ODIs at home this year.

"The main thing is how we bat our 50 overs…we have to bat 50 overs and put our innings together and partnerships together," Simmons told reporters in the pre-series press conference. Somebody has to be looking to score a hundred and hold the team together. Batting-wise that is it," he added.

Simmons, who has been the head coach of the West Indies side since 2019, also said that he is hopeful of "friendly" surfaces that will benefit his side more "than the opposition" team.

"The better wickets we get, the better it will be for our batters and bowlers. The conversation is currently on with the concerned individuals, as always," he said. Simmons, however, does not seem to be too worried about his fielding and bowling departments.

"The bowling and the fielding has been improving daily. We rank ourselves very highly on the fielding," Simmons said.

"The bowling, we had a couple of games on those wickets where, yes, people might say we should have gotten more wickets but the wicket got better every time we fielded because they had put out the second roller on it and it had dried out from earlier in the day.

"So, the bowlers have been doing well and we have to continue restricting and getting wickets - that's the only way we can keep totals low and continue to win games," he added.

West Indies will play three ODIs followed by five T20Is against India. Shikhar Dhawan is leading the ODI outfit minus big stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Bhuvneshwar Kumara and Hardik Pandya. Apart from Kohli and Bumrah, all others will return to the Indian squad for the T20I series starting on July 29.

Bhai, jaane do. Aap ka precious time waste hoga. (Bro, let it go. Your precious time would be wasted).

KL Rahul, senior India opener, has tested positive for COVID-19. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly informed about Rahul after the Board's Apex Council meeting in Mumbai on Thursday. Rahul underwent a surgery recently and had resumed his training at the NCA in Bengaluru. He was named in the T20I squad for the West Indies tour and supposed to take a fitness in a couple of days. With his COVID test returning positive, it remains to be seen whether he will travel to the West Indies or not. The T20I series starts on July 29 in Tadouba.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Senior Selection Panel today named 16 players for the upcoming Goldmedal T20I Cup, powered by Kent Water Purifiers against India and for the three-match T20 International (T20I) Series against New Zealand.

The West Indies and India Men’s teams will go head-to-head in the five-match series, starting Friday 29 July, with the first-ever West Indies Senior Men’s team match to be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. The five-match series runs until Sunday 7 August with games being played in Trinidad, St Kitts and Florida.

The same pool of 16 players will then travel to Jamaica for the three-match T20I Series against New Zealand at Sabina Park that starts from Wednesday 10 August to Sunday 14 August.

An official squad of 13 players will be nominated ahead of each match.

The Selection Panel recalled left-handed batter Shimron Hetmyer. Left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell is recovering from injury and unavailable for selection, while allrounder Fabien Allen is also unavailable for personal reasons.

Lead Selector, The Most Hon Dr Desmond Haynes said: “We welcome back Hetmyer and it is good to see him again in West Indies colours. He will fortify the batting group and with his experience and adaptability we have a ‘finisher’ who can add value and win matches for the team and delight the supporters.”

Haynes added: “Everything we do, we have to take into consideration we have a big tournament coming up later this year, which is the ICC T20 World Cup, so we are planning and gearing up towards that event. It is good to give the players some exposure to the international stage and look to find the right combinations.”

Fans can book their mounds or seated tickets online and in advance at tickets.windiestickets.com or via www.windiescricket.com/tickets without having to travel or queue to print out at home or download to their device. Box offices are also open at the Brian Lara Academy, Trinidad with box offices to open from the 29 July at Warner Park, St Kitts and then from the 3 August in Lauderhill, Florida

This series will be interesting as T20 is probably the best format for West Indies. India surely will have their task cut out. While Rohit is back India is still missing a few first choice players, so hopefully the management will experiment a bit with the combination. Would love to see Bishnoi play a few games and also Hooda get majority of the games. Again India has 3 specialist wicket keepers in the squad, I know all 3 are there for their batting but still this what bit them in their back in 2019 WC.

Keeping was not a reason for loss in 2019 WC. It was due to poor batting and sudden role changing of players.

Sending explosive players and 360 degree players over the crisis man in crisis situation was the reason behind the failure in that game. Not sure why the crisis man didn't showed up himself, maybe he was scared of facing the new bowl so sent young raw players under the fire. :inti

Still it was a weird batting line up with Dinesh Karthik & Rishabh Pant along with Jadeja & Hardik Pandya batting in the top 7. Our batting was top 3 or bust. We should have never had Dinesh Karthik and Pant playing in the same X1. Pant was nowhere ready at that time. India lacked planning and selected random players who were not in the XI even 1 year before the tournament. They dropped players who were playing like Rayudu.

This sort muddled mindset is what causes poor squads and reliance on first choice players more than it should be. This time we will have a poor top 3 and reliance will be more on the middle order.

After days of agonising wait, all members of the Indian and West Indies teams have been officially cleared to travel to the United States of America. They will be playing two T20I games in Florida this weekend.

Thanks to the intervention of the Guyana government, the US Visas for some players and support staff of the two sides could be obtained, albeit at the eleventh hour. Cricbuzz can confirm that it required the efforts of Irfan Ali, the President of Guyana, to get the travel approvals. "It was a timely and influential diplomatic effort by His Excellency," said Ricky Skerritt, the president of Cricket West Indies (CWI), thanking the head of the Guyana government.

As earlier reported, those without the visas were flown to Georgetown in Guyana after the third T20I in St Kitts on Tuesday (August 2) night for interviews at the US Embassy. Among those who attended the interviews were India skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid. There were, in fact, 14 of them from the Indian touring party who did not have the travel approvals.

Others, including Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Ravi Bishnoi, Suryakumar Yadav and Kuldeep Yadav, have reached Miami meanwhile. They will be joined by the rest of the teammates on Thursday night.

"They can fly only tomorrow afternoon. All Visa applications have been approved but passports are not to be returned until this afternoon," Skerritt said, revealing the reason for the delayed travel. "All that the CWI could do has been done. Last night's charter to Miami, for those previously with visas, was at greater financial risk to delay it than to operate it as previously planned," Skerritt further said.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Rohit will be available for the last two games on Saturday and Sunday. The India skipper retired hurt during the team's chase against West Indies in the 3rd T20I in Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts, on Tuesday. He had scored 11 off five balls when he had to leave the field. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the skipper suffered a back spasm. He is now learnt to have recovered. India went on to win the game to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
