The death toll following the derailment of a train in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state has reached at least 115, with more than 150 injured, police say.

Fourteen carriages of the Indore-Patna Express derailed just after 03:00 local time on Sunday (21:30 GMT Saturday) near the city of Kanpur.

Rescuers are still trying to reach the injured and recover the dead from the twisted carriages.

The cause of the crash near the village of Pukhrayan is not yet known.

However, the Times of India quoted sources as saying a fracture in the track could have been to blame.

The death toll has been rising steadily all day and is expected to increase further.

Krishna Keshav, who was travelling on the train, told the BBC: "We woke with a jolt at around 3am. Several coaches were derailed, everybody was in shock. I saw several bodies and injured people."

Most of the victims were located in two carriages near the engine which overturned and were badly damaged.

By late Sunday afternoon, rescue workers were still using heavy machinery to try to reach survivors.

Senior railway official Pratap Rai told Reuters: "We are using every tactic to save lives but it's very difficult to cut the metal carriages."

The BBC's Sanjoy Majumder, in Delhi, says rescuers brought out two children alive on Sunday morning, raising cheers from onlookers.

One passenger whose carriage did not derail told the Associated Press the train was going at normal speed. It stopped suddenly, said Satish Kumar, then restarted shortly before the crash.

Passenger Ruby Gupta, 20, was travelling to Azamagarh to be married on 1 December.

She told the Times of India that most of the people travelling with her had been found but that her father was still missing.

She said: "I cannot find my father and I have been looking everywhere for him. I have a fractured arm and my sisters have also sustained injuries."

Many anxious relatives gathered at the station in Indore, where the train began its journey, holding pictures of loved ones, the Times said.

Compensation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Anguished beyond words on the loss of lives due to the derailing of the Patna-Indore express. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.

"Prayers with those injured in the tragic train accident."

Mr Modi said he had spoken to Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu, who was "personally monitoring the situation closely".

On his own Twitter account, Mr Prabhu warned that "strictest possible action will be taken against those who could be responsible for accident".

He said an investigation into the crash would begin immediately and compensation would be paid to "unfortunate passengers who died and to injured".

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that India's National Disaster Response Force was overseeing the rescue efforts.

Kanpur is a major railway junction and hundreds of trains pass through it every day.

Train accidents are fairly common in India, where much of the railway equipment is out of date. An accident in Uttar Pradesh in March last year killed 39 people and injured 150.

Last year, the government announced investments of $137bn (£111bn) over five years to modernise and expand the railways.

Some news sites are reporting much higher number.
At least 63 people were killed and over 100 others injured on Sunday when 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna express train derailed near Pukhrayan area in Kanpur Dehat district, with railways officials saying the number of casualties could rise.

Sad news. Condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

RIP. The tracks look out of place and too old in the pictures posted on CNN.

Sad
So many of these incidents occur in subcontinent every week where dozens die and the people are just statistics in history

Railways is a mode of transportation favoured by the poor and will always be neglected by the ruling elites. Swanky new airports come up every year but no effort is made to overhaul the crumbling rail network.

Inna lillah e Wa inna eleh e rajeoon.

Very Sad.

May Allah give patience to the ones who lost their loved ones and grant health to the injured. Aameen.

Every year we have a couple of these major incidents with Railways. Usually happens in the UP/Bihar/Bengal area. Nothing seems to change. People forget it in no time. Its like they have accepted this as part of their lives.

Really I want to appreciate pak people condolences. I thought they will compare Indian railways with pak railways. They make fun on this worst situation. But they showed their maturity. Really this elite people neglecting railway transport. And simply compensating a few thousands to death and injured persons. And settling the things. In India there is no value for poor and middle class people. It is just matter of throwing a few thousands.

I don't know what gives you the impression that people would make fun of massive loss of innocent lives. Unfortunately these have become so common in our part of the world, Pakistan has had many in recent months as well, people just move on and forget about it as most victims are poor/middle class people.

RIP.

Modi blames Pakistan for deadly rail crash in Uttar Pradesh

NEW DELHI: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi blamed a deadly train crash that killed 148 people last November on Pakistan as he campaigned for a key state election on Friday.

Narendra Modi claimed police had found evidence of sabotage in the disaster last November, when a crowded passenger train derailed in northern Uttar Pradesh (UP) state, linking it to Pakistan. Police have not corroborated that claim, made at a rally ahead of the latest stage of voting for a new government in UP — India’s most populous state and a hotly contested political prize.

“A rail accident happened in Kanpur and some people were arrested after that,” Modi said at an election rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district. “The police found that it was a conspiracy hatched across the border,” he added, in an apparent reference to rival Pakistan. “If people who will help the conspirators are elected from here, will Gonda be safe, will the nation be safe?”

Indian politicians have a long history of using rivalry with Pakistan to stoke nationalist sentiments ahead of elections. The prime minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing a tough challenge in UP from the ruling Samajwadi Party in an election many see as a test of his popularity halfway through his first term.

The state, with a voting population equal to that of Brazil is key to Modi’s own political future as well as his party’s as India inches towards the next general election in 2019.

Three suspects arrested over a failed bid to blow up a rail track in Bihar state in December confessed to working for an agent who had also ordered them to target the train in Kanpur. Police later said they found no evidence to back the suspects’ claims.

People were arrested from Nepal. One of them had ran away to Dubai and was extradited by Dubai to Nepal and then Extradited to India.

Dont know where Tribune Found That there was no evidence as at least two other countries were involved in arrest of suspects.

So when Modi says “The police found that it was a conspiracy hatched across the border,”, is he referring to Nepal?

The consipracy was surely hatched in Nepal. As 2 nepalese citizens were arrested and extradited.Modi normally names Pakistan as Pakistan in his speeches,he didnt do it here.

The Nepalis don't like India from what I've heard.

The Madhesis who are 45% of nepalese population are considered of Indian origin. The opposition to India is limited to the Kathamndu Valley whose elite have exploited the Madhesis for centuries. They hate the Indian support or the Madhesis.
