Those of us who are desperately hoping that Test cricket has a future will not be encouraged by the insistance by cricket boards on preparing flat, batsman-friendly tracks like this one. The relatively good crowd that turned out for this game was sorely let down.
Sadly, on the rare occasion when a sporting pitch is prepared, the result always seems to consist of a chorus of howls of indignation from the batsmen, who nowadays are spoilt by playing all their cricket on feather-beds, and sometimes even a fine for a "substandard" pitch. No fines are ever dished out for producing flat, dull pitches that produce bore draws, so groundsmen can't be blamed for going for the safe option, can they?
It's up to cricket boards to take the initiative and do something about these pitches. Unfortunately they all seem to be too obsessed with expanding Twenty20 to bother about the future of real cricket.
