The England and Wales Cricket Board says it is "disappointed and sorry" a used pitch will be played on for the one-off Test between England and India.

The pitch that will be used at the County Ground in Bristol has already had 39 overs of men's Twenty20 cricket played on it on Friday night.

England captain Heather Knight said the situation was "unfortunate".

"It is not ideal and we would much rather be on a fresh one," Knight told BBC Sport.

The four-day red-ball match begins on Wednesday.

England found out about the situation last week and tried to get the pitch changed, but it was too late to prepare a fresh one.

"We know that England Women deserve a fresh wicket and we are sorry that we were unable to provide that in this instance," an ECB spokesperson said.

"With the Test only being added to the calendar in mid-April, coupled with the lack of available first class grounds, we knew a fresh TV pitch was going to be a challenge.

"We accept that this issue shouldn't have arisen and we will make sure it doesn't happen in the future."

What is the future of women's Test cricket?

While a used pitch may encourage more turn as the game goes on, it could also have the opposite effect.

The pitch could flatten out and slow down, thereby making it difficult to force a result.

It is unlikely that a men's Test would be played on a used pitch and women's Tests have often been criticised for being dull in the past, with pitches cited as part of the issue.

"We're confident we've got the team to be able to take 20 wickets and score the runs to win a Test match," Knight said.

"We can moan about it later - we've just got to play what's in front of us, we can't use it as a negative or an excuse or frustration."

England have not played a Test against anyone other than Australia since 2014, while India have not played the format for six years.

India won their last meeting at Wormsley by six wickets.

"Each one of us is desperate to be that player who will put in the [game-changing] performance," Knight said.

England's series against India will follow the same format as the points-based Women's Ashes, with four points on offer for the winner of the Test and two each if it is drawn.

The Test will be followed by three one-day internationals and three Twenty20s, each worth three points.

While England have played three Tests in the past six years, they have struggled against Australia, drawing twice and losing in Canterbury in 2015.

"It's a real challenge, and that is what is so great about Test match cricket," Knight, who will captain England for the 100th time, said.

"We play so much white-ball cricket that to train for something slightly different, and a different challenge that we only get every couple of years, is really nice.

"A bit of variety makes things fun."

England have never beaten India on home soil but 11 of their 15-player squad have Test experience, compared with eight of the tourists' party.

Shafali Verma, who is the top-ranked T20 batter in the world, could make her debut at the top of the order for India.

However, captain Mithali Raj - one of seven players who featured in the victory over England in 2014 - does not want to overburden her young team-mates.

"It's been seven years since the last Test and most of the players played predominantly white-ball cricket in those years," she added.

"We don't want to burden young players with expectations. We just want them to play their game and enjoy it."

Shafali can keep audience engaged while she is batting: Tendulkar

Shafali Verma's sheer talent and audacious stroke-play can keep fans engaged till she's at the crease, said the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, wishing the teenage sensation all the luck ahead of her much-anticipated Test debut against England on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old Shafali, who has taken the women's cricket by storm with her towering sixes, has made Tendulkar revisit his debut as a prodigious 16-year-old when he had batted manfully against Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

"When we were in Australia to support Fund Raising Game for the Bushfires, that time, I had met Shafali and we had spoken briefly. I told her that "I like the way you bat and express yourself while playing your shots. I told her to keep working hard," Tendulkar told PTI on Tuesday.

Tendulkar is confident that Shafali will shine when she makes her Test debut in the one-off Test against England starting on Wednesday.

"Just like any other 17-year-old, you could see enthusiasm and bubbling energy. I am very happy that she's progressed and doing well for India. She will be one of the key members of not Indian but world cricket because she has the skill and ability to attract attention and keep audience engaged when she is batting."

England 6 down now, Indian spinners bowling marvellously. Some brilliant catching in the slips as well.

Heather Knight played superbly for her 95, pity she couldn't convert it into a century.

It also helps that pitch is used and dry.

Need to keep them below 300. Batting last here vs English spinners would be quite difficult.

Been impressed by the drift that Sneh Rana's getting with her off-breaks. Classical finger spin.

Reckon England already have a competitive score given the conditions.

Toss was important. Both sides have good spinners.

Still possible to recover this test if our ladies manage parity in first inning.

England close on 269-6, after Knight scores 95 on her 100th appearance as captain

Beaumont (66), Sciver (42) & Winfield-Hill (35) in the runs but hosts slip from 230-2 as Rana returns 3-77

Knight saved the day for England. England spinners likely to be brought on early when India starts later in the day.

India suffered a dramatic late collapse as England fought back after an audacious 96 from teenage debutant Shafali Verma lit up the second day of the one-off Test in Bristol.

The tourists had been cruising at 167-0 before Verma was caught chasing the boundary that would have brought her a century.

From then, India folded, losing 5-16 to end the day on 187-5, trailing the hosts by 209 runs.

England had earlier declared on 396-9, led by an unbeaten 74 from Sophia Dunkley.

Verma, 17, hit 13 fours and two sixes as she produced the highest score by an Indian woman on Test debut to frustrate England's bowlers.

She and fellow opener Smriti Mandhana, who made a classy 76, looked to have batted England out of contention but after Verma had hoisted Kate Cross to mid-on, the match swung in the hosts' favour.

India looked scrambled, with skipper Heather Knight taking 2-1 off six overs to put England in prime position in this Test which has two days left to run.

Despite having never played a Test together - Verma was just 10 when India last played a red-ball match - the India openers combined gloriously in Bristol.

Verma, the top-ranked T20 batter in the world, played the way she knows how: hard. A seaming delivery from Nat Sciver was flayed effortlessly for six, while premier bowler Katherine Brunt saw a full delivery clattered back over her head.

Accompanied by Mandhana, a classical player with a stunning cover drive, she flayed England's attack around the ground. Verma celebrated her half-century with an abashed wave of the bat, preferring to let her shot-making tell the story.

Her only emotion came when she toe-ended Cross to mid-on, with the opener throwing back her head in anguish as she left.

"This partnership could be huge for women's cricket in India," said former India seamer Snehal Pradhan on Test Match Special.

"I've already seen a lot of people on my social media who don't normally talk about women's cricket, calling for others to turn on the television to watch these two wonderful players."

England were visibly lifted by Verma's dismissal. Mandhana began to struggle to rotate the strike before lofting Sciver to mid-off, Shikha Pandey chipped a catch back to Knight while captain Mithali Raj was pinned lbw on review by Sophie Ecclestone.

The fielders crowded around the bat and turned up the noise as Poonam Raut fell lbw. England almost claimed another wicket, with Harmanpreet Kaur given out lbw to Ecclestone, but a review showed a clear inside edge.

It was a frenetic end to another absorbing day's play.

Dunkley stars alongside Shrubsole fireworks
England put themselves in a strong position with the bat, led by Dunkley, who showed real maturity on her Test debut.

After losing Katherine Brunt to the second over of the day, Dunkley shared a 56-run partnership with Sophie Ecclestone as she moved England beyond the 300 mark.

She was dropped by Deepti Sharma in her follow-through on 27 and then given out on 46, lbw to Sneh Rana, but the decision was overturned on review, before a glance down to fine leg took her to an assured half-century.

Dunkley's off-side game was particularly strong as she struck nine fours, and her partnership with Anya Shrubsole helped England accelerate towards a declaration.

The pair smacked 70 runs in 10 overs, Shrubsole striking a towering six over long-on, before Heather Knight waved her players in after Shrubsole was bowled by Rana.

It was a flurry that epitomised England's positive mindset, but one that was almost instantly matched by Verma and Mandhana's controlled and calculated counter-attack.

The collapse was thanks to the negative attitude of Raut and Mythali Raj. You cannot just look to survive when the openers have laid such a good platform.

Shefali Varma and Mandana were a treat to watch. Reminded me of Ganguly and Sehwag.

Shefali is a beast.

Our expericed batters really lost the plot. At least deepti contunues to raise her game every time team is under pressure. MVP.

Rain likely saved us but cant rule out another collapse tommorow. :(

Rain plays spoilsport as the final session in Bristol is washed out.

India will start day four on 83/1, with Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma at the crease.

Good to see women's cricket progressing.
Never understood why fan adulation is so less for the women's cricket as compared to Men's.

Because its like watch Kohli bowl to Chahal

I've grown to enjoy watching women's cricket way more than I could have imagined four or so years ago. I have particularly been taken by seeing the likes of Sneh Rana and Sophie Ecclestone try out subtle variations in flight and length with their finger-spin during this match, it's been classical old-school spin bowling.

India 83-1 and 231 trail England 396-9 dec by 82 runs

England Women were frustrated by a combination of rain and Shafali Verma on day three of the LV= Insurance Test.

India trail by 82 runs going into the final day, having been asked to follow on, with 108 overs due to be bowled tomorrow.

Earlier Sophie Ecclestone had taken 4-88 to close the visitors’ first innings on 231.

We have a handy lead here.

130* and counting.

Top knock from Sneh. But we had back to back middle order collapses in both innings which is a worrying sign.

Really good fightback from the Indian women. I thought they were gone for all money when I saw them 8 down with not much of a lead.

The experienced players like Harman and Mithali should be disappointed in their performance.

What experience?

They play one test per five year!!!

Still they could have hanged around longer. Noobs saved us big time.

This test is being played in worse light than the one for which the players went off in Southampton. Does it mean the women cricketers have better eyesight? Sure the pace of the bowling is slower, but then again the umpires at the WTC final didn't seem to ask Williamson to take off his fast bowlers.

The test ends in a draw, magnificent fightback by the Indians. It was genuinely one of the best women's tests that I have watched.

Excellent fightback. Especially all the youngsters. But to force a run chase, India need bowling firepower which is missing.

good batting can save a test, only good bowling can win it. Indian girls need to start focussing on this aspect.

England Women vs India Women: Eyes On Shafali Verma As Focus Shifts To ODIs After One-Off Test

After the one-off Test, India women will take on England women in a three-match ODI series beginning June 27 at Bristol.Asian News InternationalUpdated: June 26, 2021 12:58 PM ISTRead Time: 2 min

India women will take on England women in a three-match ODI seriesFocus will be on Shafali Verma after brilliant performances in the TestThe one-off Test between the two teams had ended in a draw
Sneh Rana and Taniya Bhatia played memorable knocks in the one-off Test against England to help India walk away with a draw, and the increased self-belief and confidence will stand Mithali Raj's side in good stead when they take on England in the upcoming three-match ODI series.

The three ODIs will begin on Sunday and this would provide a chance for India to narrow down on the players who would be suitable for the women's 50-over World Cup set to be played next year. Earlier this year, the Indian side lost the limited-overs series (both ODIs and T20Is) against South Africa and this showed how the side needs to up their game.

Smriti Mandhana has been able to provide good starts at the top with a good strike rate, but once she is dismissed, the middle-order has struggled to score runs at a brisk pace and this has resulted in India not being able to post a total of more than the 250-run mark.

However, Shafali Verma has now found a place in the ODI setup and she has the potential to set the stage on fire. Even if she stays for 15 overs at the crease, the side would have around 70-80 runs on the board.

The last series against South Africa is proof enough of how the Indian side needs to reinvent their batting in the middle-order and the runs need to come at a brisk pace.

Punam Raut has already reinvented her game and the series against South Africa showed how the number-three has worked on her game to increase her strike rate.

Off late, Harmanpreet Kaur and Mithali Raj have not given consistent performances in the 50-over format, and the earlier the duo gets their mojo back, the better it would be for the Indian side.

The ODI series against South Africa saw the Indian attack not being able to defend scores of 230-240, but the attack needs to bring their A-game against this strong England line-up.

Shikha Pandey has made her way back into the squad and along with Jhulan Goswami, she will form a stellar partnership.

Radha Yadav, Poonam Yadav, and Sneh Rana are quality spinners and these three are capable of spinning a web around the English line-up.

It is safe to say that this series against England will help India gauge their preparation for next year's World Cup.

IND W vs ENG W, 1st ODI: England's top order made short work of the 202 target as unbeaten fifties from Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver gave the host an eight-wicket win against India in Bristol on Sunday.

England's top order made short work of the 202 target as unbeaten fifties from Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver gave the host an eight-wicket win against India in Bristol on Sunday.

England reached home with 91 balls to spare as Beaumont and Sciver's unbeaten 119-run stand smothered a listless Indian attack.

Earlier, Skipper Mithali Raj led from the front with a patient 72. She shared two crucial partnerships — 56 runs with Punam Raut (32) and 65 with Deepti Sharma (30) — to take India to a modest total.

India lost both openers cheaply. Shafali Verma made 15 on her ODI debut. She miscued a Katherine Brunt (2/35) delivery to Anya Shrubsole at mid-on in the fifth over.

HIGHLIGHTS| India W vs England W, 1st ODI Live Score: ENG: 86/2: Beaumont dealing in boundaries, Bisht removes Knight

Smriti Mandhana (10) fell soon after, with Shrubsole (2/33) going through her defence. Punam and Mithali then resurrected the innings. Just when the partnership was starting to flourish, Punam handed a simple catch to Sophie Ecclestone off Kate Cross.

India vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur's (1) didn't trouble the scorers.

Mithali notched up her fifty in 95 balls with a four off Shrubsole. She found runs hard to come by at the start of her innings. But after Deepti's dismissal, she changed gears and hit three boundaries in an over, slicing and lofting Shrubsole to amass 15 off the 44th.

Ecclestone eventually got rid of Mithali in the 46th over as India slumped to 180 for 6.

Shikha Pandey (3) and Jhulan Goswami (1) remained unbeaten to help India get past the 200-run mark.

England Women are on course to win the second limited overs match at Taunton against India Women, as chasing 222, England Women are 213/5, needing nine runs off four overs.

Conditions haven't been that conducive for white ball cricket.

England Women win by 5 wickets. Sophia Dunkley top scores with 73 not out to guide her team to victory after being reduced to 4/92 at one stage.

England Women lead the series 6-2 on points (2 points each for the drawn test, 4 points to England Women for the two ODI wins).

ENGW 219 (47) CRR: 4.66
Innings Break

Match reduced to 47 overs due to rain.
INDW need to chase 220 runs to win.

India Women 2/71 after 17 overs, need another 149 off 30 overs. Pitch is slow, so chasing isn't at all easy. England Women are favourites for mine.

Mithali Raj goes past Charlotte Edwards to become the highest run-scorer across formats.

She now has 10277 runs across the three formats.

India Women are 4 down now, req run-rate steadily climbing. 4/131 after 33, need 89 runs from 14 overs. England are probably going to win comfortably from here.

It's funny, but I find women's white ball cricket way more interesting than the modern-day equivalents for men. It's probably because the women are playing a brand of cricket which was popular two decades ago in the men's game, and bowlers are still more likely to be match-winners than batters. Modern-day white ball cricket has become squalid because it's too skewed towards the bat.

India Women need 48 runs off 7 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Mithali Raj has just reached a half-century and is key to the chase. It's getting tight.

India Women win by 4 wickets, Mithali Raj finishes 75 not out. Brilliant innings and a great chase on a difficult pitch.

England Women lead 6-4 on points.

India Women won a tense final Royal London International at Worcester by four wickets.

Mithali Raj's unbeaten 75 took her side home to see the ODI series end 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

The multi-format series sits at 6-4 with the final three matches - the Vitality IT20 series - due to get underway in Northampton on Friday July 9.

India Women won the second Vitality IT20 at Hove to leave the multi-format series delicately poised at 8-6 to England going into the final match at Chelmsford.

England limited the visitors to 148-4 from their 20 overs, a good fightback after Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana had got their side off to a quick start, but despite being 106-2 in the 14th over of their reply Heather Knight’s team fell eight runs short.

The third Vitality IT20 will be played on Wednesday.

Really proud of the women. They are playing great cricket.

One of the girls seemed to have taken a stunner of a catch. It was all over the news

India have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against England in the second women’s T20I in Hove.
Phil Whitticase of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Harmanpreet Kaur’s side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Kaur pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Ian Blackwell and Paul Baldwin, third umpire Sue Redfern and fourth umpire Tim Robinson leveled the charge.
