India activist Disha Ravi arrested over farmers' protest 't00lkit'

_116947515_disharavi.jpg

A 22-year-old Indian climate activist has been arrested after sharing a document intended to help farmers protest against new agricultural laws.

Police said Disha Ravi was a "key conspirator" in the "formulation and dissemination" of the document.

The "t00lkit", which suggests ways of helping the farmers, was tweeted by prominent activist Greta Thunberg.

Activists say Ms Ravi's arrest is a clear warning to those who want to show support to anti-government protests.

Tens of thousands of farmers have been protesting for more than two months over the laws, which they say benefit only big corporations.

The new legislation loosens rules around the sale, pricing and storage of farm produce which have protected India's farmers from the free market for decades.

The farmers' protests mark the biggest challenge India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faced. His government has offered to suspend the laws but the farmers want them replaced altogether.
What do we know about Disha Ravi's arrest?

Ms Ravi, one of the founders of the Indian branch of the Fridays for Future climate strike, was arrested by Delhi police.

In a statement posted on social media on Sunday, police said she had "collaborated" to "spread disaffection against the Indian State".

It said she was an editor of the document and had shared it with Swedish climate activist Ms Thunberg.

Officials said Ms Ravi would be held in custody for five days. No formal charges have been announced.

Police have said the tool kit suggested a conspiracy in the run up to a huge rally on 26 January, which saw protesting farmers clash with police.

"The call was to wage economic, social, cultural and regional war against India," Delhi Police Special Commissioner Praveer Ranjan said earlier this month.

"We have registered a case for spreading disaffection against the government of India - it's regarding sedition - and disharmony between groups on religious, social and cultural grounds, and criminal conspiracy to give shape to such a plan," he added.

Jairam Ramesh, a former minister and lawmaker for the opposition Congress party, called Ms Ravi's arrest and detention "completely atrocious".

Hopefully she will have better luck than that of Nodeep Kaur (who is being illegally detained and was sexually assaulted by animals in uniforms).

When it comes to pakistan then become a fascist and wish a french revolution style treatment to the opposition, and when it comes to india become a bleeding heart liberal.

Also meet the new age climate activists who support the demand for burning crops and using ground water for growing crops for profit, at places it is not meant to be grown.

Well we just like anyone anti Modi, just like you like anyone anti Pakistan.

For instance?

The way Pakistan respects and protects Islam. The way Imran is a devout muslim and works for minorities like sikhs and hindus too. In india anyone who says he is a devout hindu will get backlash from the sickulars as they cant wrap their head around being religious and also being kind.

Nuh huh. French Revolution for those who enjoyed cakes when poors starved.

This is like basic decency, I just hope Indian police doesn't scare this poor girl for life.

Then find out if this girl had let go of eating good food as there are poor starving still. She deserves the french treatment then.

Baby steps bro. India is coming from a long way behind to catch Pakistan. I checked to see what this girl's crime was and turns out she "collaberated" to spread dissaffection against the Indian state. Well all that happened for this crime is that she was arrested for her seditious behaviour, compare that with the similar behaviour of Pakistani Malala who was shot in the face for doing the same thing.

Although Malala wasn't shot by the police, she was attacked by a terrorist. Which I suppose makes Indian reaction a bit worse since it was carried out by the state. :13:

But still similar in other....ok never mind.

You are picking the wrong examples for comparison. Dr Shakil Afridi collaborated with the CIA, and even though the ends were right, the means were not, and we rightly arrested for sedition.

For this girl, let the investigation get completed. If she is above board, she will be released. Otherwise she will deserve what is coming for her.

Can you name one devoutly hindu politician who gets bad rep from the left just for being religious?

This guy :))

He's the MP of her area.

He wants techies to not be allowed to work from home. I'm happy with that because most of these techies are rabid BJP supporters. Now enjoy your daily journeys through traffic :)

Something wrong with bangalore, which produces some of the most deranged woke people. Living second hand american lives and delusions of being in a first world country. also failure of the education system, where they feel more connected to the west instead of having roots in dharma.

Meh there are teenagers who fight wars so her age should not be brought into it.

However, what she did was it really seditious? Have only read some snippets here and there about this t***kit and it seemed mostly like a propaganda material at best. No clue, just asking

Cosmopolitan cities produce most of the woke youth. Far left and woke generation are a result of Western influence. India only had left before. Now there are far left who want to create chaos on the streets just to dethrone the rightwing government.

Some day a center left Government will come to power in India.

Created thousands of alt-liberal youth with one action.

Helps when its the older uncle looking politicians on the other side talking about Anti-National stuff.

Almost like a bollywood movie right now, pathetic

They are not created out of thin air. They already were. We just want them to come out in the open.

Had to google what is this tool kit thing. Sounds like some dangerous rootkit thing.

The choice of the girl's pic by the media made me :)) a bit. Smiley, sunny face with a furry looking dog.

They were just liberals or pacifists .. now alt liberal. The push has happened.

Just like how many pacifists got pushed towards hindutva. It is the natural order of things. The more people move to extremes, the more is better for us (us as in the group i am part of).

what group would that be and why? i was always told extremism of any sort is bad.

Couldn't find the actual document. Indian "media" has plagued all results in Google.

My guess, it was an explanation of whole matter for people to easily understand. I won't be surprised if police department didn't even read it before arresting Disha

That's their core.

Off topic but China invading, building villages inside India and they still claiming 'nothing happened' made me understand a lot about this lot.

Farmers Protest In India

Note: This is a document meant to enable anyone unfamiliar with the ongoing farmers protests in India to better understand the situation and make decisions on how to support the farmers based on their own analysis.

As per the agriculture census of 2015-16, the majority of land holdings in India — 86 percent — are small and marginal. They are less than two hectares in size, and these households’ incomes are already below what they spend on consumption expenditure.

These historically marginalised farmers, who were first exploited by feudal landlords and colonisers pre-Independence, and by globalising and liberalizing policies since the 1990s, are the backbone of the Indian economy even today. Despite thousands of suicides caused due to indebtedness and lack of structural support, an absence of solutions to deeply-rooted problems has further been exacerbated by the new farm laws that were passed without any consultation with these farmers who provide for a majority of the Indian population's daily food consumption.

Instead of being supported to become self-reliant and prosperous, a majority of farmers are increasingly being subjected to the control of large corporations and international institutions whose sole focus is profits, and necessarily involves increased exploitation of nature. The same destructive forces that are destroying the planet are the ones taking over the lives of our country's most populous and important demographic, subjecting them to increasing hegemony and repeating similar patterns of privatization being seen across the globe - from the Philippines to Colombia.

This is not just about one country and its oppressed peoples, it's about common people across the world having the opportunity to be self-sufficient, feel secure about providing for their families, and live well.

On their own terms, as any democracy true to its name should facilitate.

If you base your knowledge by a few tweets, you will be at a loss for words. Check the evidence and argument presented in the court which made the judge give custody for 5 days.

When Khalistanis, Pakistanis, pseudo far left liberalists and foreign activists support something in India, its good to know that the Indian govt is opposing it.

She deleted the original *******. And posted a new one.

To coordinate with foreigners, esp supporters of Khalistani separatist movement to target Indian missions and make coordinated violent protests like the one on 26th January is quite like sedition.

Again, I highly doubt anyone actually read the document. Indian administration has gone in full defensive mode. In other words, they have lost it.

t-kit is not the problem. Did you check the arguments presented before the judge who gave judicial custody of 5 days? That should be the main information to be considered.

If someone supports a cause, and some criminals also join and support the cause, doesnt mean that all protestors are criminals by association. The issue is something else.

You do realize what an argument is, right?

For example, let's say court is judging person A because he supposedly swore at person B.

Now, person B's lawyer can say: "Person A is world biggest terrorist and he is planning to summon a black hole to end whole planet, and B tried to stop him and he swore at him". Just because the lawyer said this argument that doesn't make person A automatically culpable.

I'm not the most eloquent around here but hopefully your boomer mind gets it ;)

Focus on facts, not arguments. Post the deleted 'tool kit' here.

What is it exactly you are trying to discuss. Seems like you are dodging a lot of questions including one I asked a while back and never got a reply :)

You can do better at dodging questions. How was it wrong?

There is this old and wise saying "There are no wrong or silly questions"
Go ahead, try again.....

I don't believe in that saying. There are silly questions: like have you stopped beating your wife? Such questions only deserve a royal ignore. Now let us stop the derailment and let the thread be about the arrest of this girl.

How can we continue a discussion when you have alluded to favoring extremist views. If you have not, we are trying to clarify that.
You said and I quote:

"Just like how many pacifists got pushed towards hindutva. It is the natural order of things. The more people move to extremes, the more is better for us (us as in the group i am part of)."

If you are being sarcastic thats a different story, but I would still like to get a clarification on your views towards extremism here.

Extremism is a loaded word, which means different things to different people, and I did not use that word. I talked about people moving to extremes of ideology. centrists or neutrals don't move the wheel, those at extremes do. I was not being sarcastic, I am often serious, but also don't waste my time telling people that I am serious.

So extremism is justified as long as you can move the wheel? Does it matter what direction the wheel is moving towards? And what group are you a part of? I am afraid that needs to be clear before we proceed with this discussion.

thats a cop out. So you are here looking to discuss the detainment of a 20 something compatriot who is an activist, you have yourself alluded to being part of a extremist faction and you want to discuss and possibly support suppression of a certain faction under the pretenses of being seditionists?

How disingenuous is that!

how do you define people moving towards extremes of ideology if not as "extremists"? Anybody care to take a shot at this one?

I don't matter here. What matters is the law. Is any law being violated by her detention? It is normal to get judicial custody of accused for serious charges, and it can only be granted by a judge, which happened here. After the investigating officer builds a case, it is over to judiciary and law will take its own course. If the evidence is weak, she will be let off. Don't know what some people are crying about, when law is being upheld.

how do you define people moving towards extremes of ideology if not as "extremists"? Anybody care to take a shot at this one?

Extreme secularism, extreme piety, extreme loyalty, extreme truthfulness..they are all extremes, but many people think of extremism as something which relates to violence, which is why I said it is a loaded term. There are many beautiful ways of extremism.

Dont sell yourself too short. I think it matters a lot around here what you truly are. It helps better understand one's POV when you know where one truly stands. I think I am starting to get that idea now in your particular case. Most views coming from an extremist corner are garbage and should be taken with a grain of salt no matter how confucius-esque or buddhist they sound.

but surely that was not the context when you said and I quote: "Just like how many pacifists got pushed towards hindutva. It is the natural order of things. The more people move to extremes, the more is better for us (us as in the group i am part of)."
Perhaps it will benefit your cause, if you cut the innuendo, come out of the closet and proclaim what group you truly represent. I think it will help "move the wheel" much faster that way.

I am under oath of secrecy to not divulge anything about the group that I am a part of. What closet? I have always been vocal about where I stand.

so you are sworn to secrecy and yet you spend close to at last a couple of hours a day on these boards discussing your views? That is quite acceptable to your group but you cant say their name? At least tell us what you truly stand for, for those unlucky ones like me whom the enlightenment has evaded all this time. Pretty please!

She has been given warm clothes ( as it is still cold in delhi), books and time to meet her family. Just a matter of 5 days, if she is innocent. short term custody is a good experience for a budding activist.

Disha Ravi and Greta Thunberg should be more worried about stubble burning by these same farmers which chokes up the air during winter. May be Greta moved on from being a Climate activist to political analyst.

maye she is part of an extremist group she is sworn to protect through secrecy but its all for the greater good?

What someone thinks is good holds no meaning in front of the law. Law is clear and she was even aware that she was breaking a law, as her chats reveal.

Kind of like how your posts on PP show affinity for extremism and loyalty to a secret group you are sworn to protect?

If law enforcement arrests me and I am put on trial for breaking any law, I won't be complaining. One should know what they are getting into.

Do you foresee getting arrested in the near future? Is that why you don’t openly share your beliefs because they could be conceived illegal or dangerous to your government?

Or is it because you are trying to avoid a backlash here?

New Delhi: Twenty-two-year-old activist Disha Ravi -- who spent five days in police custody and two days in jail in the ******* case -- did not get bail today. The order was reserved shortly after an hour-long argument between the judge and the Delhi Police, in the middle of which, judge Dharmendra Rana said he "Can't move ahead unless I satisfy my conscience". Later, he reserved the order for Tuesday, which would mean another day in jail for the climate activist.

At the hearing today, the Delhi Police's reasoning about the activists being in league with secessionists and conspiring to cause the violence during the farmers' tractor rally on Republic Day was severely put to test, with the judge dubbing it "conjecture".

Starting with "What is a *******" and whether it was "incriminating in itself", the judge went on to ask a series of tough questions.

"What is the evidence collected by you to show the link between her and the January 26 violence? You have argued about her role in ******* and she in touch with the secessionists," he said.

When the Delhi Police -- represented by Additional Solicitor General SV Raju -- argued that "Conspiracy can be seen only through circumstantial evidences," the judge shot back, "So you don't have any evidence to connect Disha with the January 26 violence?"

To underscore the point, he added, "How do you connect actual violators on January 26 with Disha?"

"In a conspiracy, execution is different and planning is different," the Delhi Police responded, but it failed to satisfy the judge. "Should I presume that there is no direct link now?" he said.

After learning that the perpetrators of violence have been arrested in another case, he said, "Where is the connection between conspiracy and offence? I have still not got the answer".

Appearing for Disha Ravi, counsel Sidharth Agarwal said the 22-year-old from Karnataka has had no contact with any secessionist.

When the judge pointed out, "There can be another element also, enemy's enemy is my friend", Mr Agarwal said, "I must engage with that secessionist to take part in that cause".

There is no evidence to show "she is one, Disha Ravi's lawyer said. "My only chats submitted are with PJF (Poetic Justice Foundation). With so much power, why wasn't that organisation banned yet?" he added.

The only banned organisation in this case is Sikh For Justice, "but even the case of Delhi Police doesn't show any connection between me and them. They say I was in touch with PJF but that's not a banned organisation," her lawyer added.

Questioning the Delhi Police, which had opposed the bail, the lawyer said, "What's the strategy of the Delhi Police here? Three days of judicial custody and then again taking me into police custody... not to find some devices or evidences but to confront me with a co-accused".

The Delhi Police, which arrested Disha Ravi from Bengaluru last Saturday, alleged that she was a key conspirator in the case and prepared and spread the ******* in an attempt to revive a Khalistani group.

The ******* made headlines after it was shared on Twitter by Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg to show support for protesting farmers.

A warrant is out for Nikita Jacob and Shantanu Muluk, who the police said were also involved in creating the "*******"and wanted a social media buzz over the farmers' tractor rally on Republic Day. The two have been granted transit anticipatory bail by Bombay High Court.

Claiming it was found of on a social media handle ahead of violence during the farmers' tractor rally, the police said it indicates a conspiracy behind the events of January 26.

An Indian court has granted bail to a 22-year-old climate activist who was arrested for sharing a document intended to help farmers protesting against new agricultural laws.

Police said Disha Ravi was a "key conspirator" in the "formulation and dissemination" of a protest "*******".

They have accused her of sedition and conspiracy - charges she has denied.

Activists have called her arrest a warning to those who want to show support for anti-government protests.

Tens of thousands of farmers have been protesting for three months against new laws, which they say will benefit only big corporations.

These protests have come to represent one of the biggest challenges faced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Ms Ravi, one of the founders of the Indian branch of the Fridays for Future climate strike, was arrested by Delhi police on 13 February from her home in the southern city of Bangalore.

She was flown to Delhi where she appeared before a magistrate and was remanded in custody.

In a statement posted on social media, police said she had "collaborated" to "spread disaffection against the Indian state".

They said she was an editor of a document - "tool kit" - and had shared it with Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who had tweeted it.

On Saturday, a Delhi court asked the Delhi police whether it had any evidence against Ms Ravi or "are we required to draw inferences and conjectures". The police were opposed to Ms Ravi's bail application.

Her lawyer told the court that "having a difference of opinion does not amount to sedition". He asked the court whether, for example, it would be fair to consider someone who preferred "Kung Fu to yoga" a "Chinese spy" as a result.

Police said the tool kit suggested there was a conspiracy in the run-up to a huge rally on 26 January, which saw protesting farmers clash with the police.

In court, Ms Ravi broke down and told the judge she had merely edited two lines of the document.

But police said she had shared the document with Ms Thunberg and then asked her to remove it after it was "accidentally" leaked.

An Indian climate activist linked to Greta Thunberg said on Saturday she felt “violated” by her arrest last month on sedition charges and her treatment by the media, her first comments on a case that sparked international criticism.

Disha Ravi, a 22-year-old vegan and member of Thunberg’s Fridays for Future movement, was charged in February over an online document about months-long protests by Indian farmers.

Ten days after her arrest and following widespread criticism, a court in India’s capital New Delhi granted her bail, citing “scanty and sketchy evidence” that she was involved in fomenting violence.

“I had coerced myself into believing that the only way I would be able to live through this was by tricking myself into thinking that this wasn’t happening to me,” Ravi said in a statement.

“My actions were pronounced guilty - not in the court of law, but on flat screens.”

Police say the document Ravi created stoked violence on Jan. 26, India’s Republic Day, when some protesting farmers broke free of a planned march and clashed with police.

Angry at new agricultural laws they say benefit large private buyers at the expense of growers, tens of thousands of farmers have been camped on the outskirts of New Delhi since late last year.

Swedish climate activist Thunberg, popstar Rihanna, and U.S. activist Meena Harris, the niece of Vice President Kamala Harris, all tweeted in support of the protests last month, drawing a rebuke from India’s foreign ministry.
