This is over concerns cheerfulness could lead to a perception of lax security and a threat of terror attacks.

The country's Central Industrial Security Force, which is in charge of aviation safety, wants its staff to be "more vigilant than friendly".

They will move from a "broad smile system" to a "sufficient smile system", the Indian Express says.

Officials are said to believe that excessive friendliness puts airports at risk of terrorist attacks.

Ranjan even said the 9/11 attacks had taken place because of "an excessive reliance on passenger-friendly features".

This is not the first time Indian police officers have been told to improve their standards or alter their behaviour:

In July, the Karnataka State Reserve Police told its officers to lose weight or face suspension from service

And in 2004, police in Madhya Pradesh state were paid to grow moustaches because bosses believed it made them command more respect

By contrast, elsewhere in Asia, Nepalese police hired 600 trainers in 2014 to help officers become more friendly.

Is this a satire piece? :)))

How many passengers from "terrorist" countries fly to India anyway? Most of the Brits who go there are usually hippy stoners wanting access to cheap living and dope.

Indian airport police are the grumpiest people you can find in India. If anything, they need to smile a bit.

From my experience, security guards are very rude. They treat you like a pest and want to get rid of you immediately.

Second you on that , I think they are all the same every where..

This must be a joke to read for anyone that have traveled through our airports.

Maybe they are nice to white people who knows.

The ones at Mumbai international airport are very friendly and welcoming. I don’t see why that is a bad thing though

They are nicer to white people especially white ladies for sure. That may get them a visa to Europe or better still the USA:farhat Treat your own people like filth and foreigners like royalty is the order of the day.

Delhi is the only airport where I saw a passenger, white American female in her 50's dressed like some businesswoman or congresswoman, screaming at the security checkpoint police for some reason, who did not ask her to calm down.... and let her pass.

Even in places known for looking up to Caucasians such as in the GCC, screaming at the security personnel will get you a few minutes in a room, with a warning at the very least

Airport security in India is managed by CISF (Central Industrial Security Force)
I have noticed, MOST of CISF personnel deployed at Indian airports are Haryanvi Jatts.
Next time you are at airport security say "bhai ke haal chaal hai" - you will get a broad smile

This is pure and utter garbage. If anything, security personnel should have some level of customer service skills which means being friendly to the general public.

It also reassures the public/passengers because contrary to what the authorities are trying to achieve, appearing all tense at all times shows that danger is imminent. Somebody must be having a laugh, otherwise, some top brass in the CISF have lost the plot.
