Indian batsmen on UAE pitches - what can we learn?

For years, we have lamented the lack of flair and stroke-play in our batting on the nature of UAE wickets that are supposedly not conductive to flamboyant batting.

However, over the last two years, Indian batsmen have showed that it is more due to the lack of skill of Pakistani batsmen than the pitches.

In the 2018 Asia Cup, Rohit and Dhawan smoked a full-strength Pakistani bowling attack and played the type of shots that our batsmen cannot even play in their dreams.

In the ongoing IPL, we have seen the likes of KL Rahul, Samson, Agarwal, Gill, Shaw and of course Rohit showcase incredible power-hitting and grace.

The other day, it was really hard to believe that KL Rahul was batting on a Dubai wicket when he smashed 132 in 69 balls.

Samson has hit 16 sixes in two innings on pitches that are supposedly not suited to T20 cricket. He has made batting on UAE pitches look like a piece of cake.

Granted that Sharjah is better than Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but it is still mighty impressive.

What is even more remarkable is that most of these young Indian batsmen are playing in the UAE for the first time and they have taken no time to adjust to wickets that are very different to India’s.

Our fans are quick to blame the so-called poor bowling but it is actually the supreme standard of batting than the quality of bowling on show here.

PSL bowlers who have created the illusion that PSL bowling standard is high will be taken to these cleaners by these brilliant batsmen.

So far, Kohli is pretty much the only Indian batsmen who has not looked good, but it is definitely down to poor form in general rather than failing to adjust to the pitches.

Good points, Mamoon. It's strange to see the lack of power hitters in Pakistan team since Anwar and Aamer retired.

Yea the same PSL where nobodies hit sixes for fun.

Asif Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Anwar Ali, Shadab Khan, Sohaib Maqsood, and Sohail Akhtar have played crazy innings, but they are failures with the bat in T20Is.

Also let’s compare bowling attacks

Delhi- Rabada, Axar, Nortje, Avesh, Mishra
Islamabad- Steyn, Rumman, Musa, Shadab, Zafar

Mumbai- Boult, Pattinson, Bumrah, Pandya, Pollard
Karachi- Amir, Imad, Umaid, Jordan, Arshad

Bangalore- Steyn, Umesh, Saini, Dube, Chahal
Lahore- Shaheen, Samit, Dilbar, Haris, Hafeez

Chennai- Charan, Curran, Hazelwood, Chawla, Jadeja
Peshawar- Hasan, Wahab, Yasir, Rahat, Khan

Hyderabad- Kumar, Khaleel, Rashid, Nabi, Sharma
Quetta- Naseem, Sohail, Mills, Hasnain, Nawaz

As you can see the IPL bowlers are absolute garbage besides Bumrah, Rashid and Nabi who aren’t allowed in Pakistan.

Comparison should be Asia cup 2018 and not IPL vs PSL w.r.t UAE pitches.

What is this ? I don't see any argument except a bunch of names stacked up against each other. BBL and BPL bowlers are better than PSL lineups.

I can nitpick on every team you listed there but as a sample let’s start with this, how does Karachi have a stronger bowling line up than Mumbai :))

I love the way you pick one random team and compare it with another random team. For e.g., why not compare Mumbai with Quetta? :)). All opinions aside, this is a very unique way of presenting an argument.

Our selection for the Asia Cup in 2018 was an absolute disaster, we did not pick proper full time spinners at all. I am really glad Mickey finally got shown the door, he had fooled everyone long enough

The skill level of these Indian batsmen is just insane. Forget Pakistan, even foreign batsmen don't hold a candle against these Indians. It's just remarkable how fearless and confident these young batsmen are.

And let's ignore Samson, Gill, even a guy like Nitish Rana of KKR would be a guaranteed all- format player for Pakistan. And this guy might probably never play for India.

Also this delusion that people have that PSL bowlers are great, will be evaporated soon. If PSL have these Indian batsmen and some leading batsmen like Buttler, Bairstow, Pooran, we will all see the likes of Umaid Asif and Sameen Gul being taken to the cleaners.

It might sting but the only reason people hype up Pakistani bowling is because they want something in order to bring a substandard quality league up so to make a comparison with the IPL. Hence you see guys like Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja raving about PSL. Deep down inside, everybody knows that there really is no comparison.

However, just want to say that PCB has done the best it can. PSL is indeed incredible given the level of quality that Pakistan cricket possesses at the moment. You can't really do much. You can't make a Fiat run like a Ferrari. The only thing you can do is to ensure you are the best Fiat out there, which I believe PCB has managed to done.

Amir and Imad are just too deadly as an opening bowling pair.

This is a fantastic and well balanced post. Forget all the banter, the biggest story Pakistan can sell about the PSL is not exactly the cricket but the way the people responsible managed to get a league up and running to a point where they brought it back to their home country amidst all the adversities. Now that right there is a heart warming story.

Hard to argue against this. My goodness, PSL bowling is really mind boggling good.

May be Amir is a threat with a new ball but you think guys like Rohit,Kohli,Rahul,Pandya etc will have sleepless nights over Imad lol and I am only talking about Indian players and not the foreign superstars that too on IPL pitches.

Harsh but truth. We play expired players like Samit Patel, Ramdin in PSL who atleast won't find a place in any league.

Great post as expected.

I actually forgot about N. Rana, who is probably better then all our batsmen except Babar, and might never play for India. Incredible.

There is so much to learn from how India develops batsmen. However, we prefer to live in denial and claim that these batsmen are scoring runs because they are somehow not facing world beaters like Umaid Asif, Dilbar, Irfan Khan, Shinwari, Sameen, Rauf, Hasnain, Arshad etc.

I would actually argue that if you take a bunch of students from two different countries i.e. Country A and Country B. If Country A invests $100 million on their students but Country B purses are constrained and they at best can only invest $10,000. 10/10 Country A students should be able to demolish Country B students

Looks like you didn’t think through before posting this, after reading this post i am even more confident that ipls bowling standards are better.

Apart from Quetta and Lahore to an extent, dont see anything in those PSL attacks.

What do you see in quetta's bowling attack?
Naseem is unproven,he has literally done nothing ,mills?,hasnain again hasnt done anything in internationals .
Same goes for lahore -the only bowler who can be rated is shaheen

Iam sick of the SRH bowling line up tbh, so the Quetta one seems attacking enough for me. I see top potential in Hasnain and Naseem, so thats why rated them.
Lahore vs RCB is a close one. Both teams have spray guns and one top bowler each in Shaheen and Chahal.

This is one of the greatest own goals we have ever seen on PP. You have literally proved that IPL franchises have better bowling attacks.
