"OTTAWA—Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan’s visit to his native India this week has run into controversy after one of the country’s political leaders accused him of being a Sikh nationalist.

Amarinder Singh, the top elected official in India’s Punjab province, where Sajjan was born, made the explosive accusation in an interview on Indian TV in advance of Sajjan’s trip.

In the interview, Singh expressed anger over not being allowed to speak at political rallies in Canada last year before calling Sajjan and the other Sikh members of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet “Khalistanis.”

“I’m not going to meet him,” Singh said. “There are five ministers who are Khalistanis and I am not interested in meeting any Khalistanis.”

The Khalistani movement is comprised of Sikhs who want to create an independent homeland and became synonymous with a wave of violence that swept across India in the 1980s.

Authorities believe Khalistani extremists were also responsible for the Air India bombing, the worst terrorist attack in Canadian history, which killed 329 people in 1985

Indian authorities have since cracked down on the more violent Khalistani groups inside the country, but warned that the separatists continue to enjoy support in Canada and other places.

Sajjan’s spokeswoman, Renee Filiatrault, refused to be drawn into a war of words with Singh on Tuesday, saying the defence minister’s trip was intended to strengthen ties between Canada and India.

“Minister Sajjan is a proud Canadian, with a lifetime of service to Canada,” Filiatrault said in an email, adding: “He is not scheduled to meet with any representatives from the Punjab government.”

Sikh groups in Canada and India expressed shock and anger at Singh’s comment, with some accusing him of being undiplomatic and others accusing him of trying to distract attention from Punjab’s economic problems.

Some noted that other senior Indian leaders, including Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, met Sajjan during the Canadian minister’s visit, indicating they don’t believe he is a Khalistani sympathizer.

Gurpatwant Pannun, senior counsel for the Toronto-based Sikhs for Justice, said the furor appears to have arisen because Singh was prevented from speaking at political rallies in Canada last year.

While Singh did not say during the TV interview why he wasn’t allowed to speak, Pannun said his group raised the issue with the Liberal government in April 2016.

“To get support from the Sikh diaspora and collect funds, these leaders go to the United States and Canada,” Pannun said, whose group wants a peaceful referendum on an independent Khalistan.

“But we found out there is a political law that you cannot address political gatherings. So we wrote to the foreign affairs minister.”

Indian media have reported that the Canadian government warned Singh against attending the rallies."

Could be true. There are many Khalistani Sikh's living in Canada.

Inshah Allah Khalistan will get independence right after Kashmir, Sikhs deserve it.

All the oppressed communities/groups in India deserve their own homeland and live with dignity.

Sikhs though are the most patriotic citizens of india.Pakistan has had the first hand experience of dealing with them in 1971,99 or kargil war.

The ones you label "oppressed" live a far more free and affluent life than any ethnic group in Pakistan.

Is the Indian army only made up of Sikhs? What about the Hindus, Christians and Muslims in India's armed forces? I always find this Hindutva idea that Sikhs are the sword arm of the Hindu nation a slightly bizarre one. It seems more of a fanciful myth rather than based on reality.

Amarinder Singh is sulking because the Canadians refused him permission to visit their soil for politicking and fund raising. Also 100s of NRI Punjabis from Canada flew to India to campaign for the Aam Admi Party during the recent assembly elections.

Moreover, the Ontario legislative assembly recently passed a motion describing the 1984 anti- Sikh riots as a genocide. This is embarrassing for the Congress high command which Amarinder is part of.

Although it could be true but Captain is being a fool here, diplomacy is the need of the time with so much Indo Canadian trade and people movement something most Canadian politicians of South Asian descent understand.

Similar to their Punjabi youtubers who no more sprout their agenda.
At the end of day its all about money and trade,If india can keep up then these issues will remain low irrespective of what Ontario says.

Well Sikhs are heavily represented in the army not denying that.Perhaps that has got to do with their martial culture developed by Guru Gobind Singh ji to defend and protect their dharma against the hostile elements of that time(yup them bad moslems). But seeing how their young generation is composed mostly of crack heads and wannabe idiots whose sole aim in life is to settle in Cannadda and build huge kothis in countryside we would see more and more Sikhs less inclined to join the forces compared to their ancestors.

1984 Sikh riots were a genocide.Period.I was once watching a documentary interviewing an elderly woman survivor of the riots and how her sons and husband were butchered and set alight in daylight and she could do nothing but watch them meet their end . Brought tears to my eyes.

Congress has a lot of blood on its hands during the Sikh riots and the emergency. But since Sangh/RSS is the flavour in vogue now, they pretend all innocent .

It's been 33 years since the riots we as a country need to look forward and not let politicians bring up something which happened 3 decades ago to divide the society and votes..

in my time in north america i found the khalistan movement alive and kicking among the young sikhs there

It is but its still not the level of UK ,where they sell t-shirts with Khalistan and what not and Indians should be wary of British coz they can use it against us,luckily we also have a high number of other Indians there restricting it off.

Canada was similar and defn the Canadian gov sponsored it too before they blew up their own ppl, luckily its majorly political only in UK and their hatred is on diff level.

I have been to a Gurudwara here in the UK to attend a friend's marriage - in the one I went to, they have frescoes of Bindrawale on the walls. Seem to a remember an incident where a group here tried to attack one the Indian Army men responsible for the attack on the Golden Temple too.

In Ottawa I've seen a few Sikh temples with ''1984, never forgotten'' banners. But I think this sentiment is only present in NRI Sikhs.

They openly sell pictures of Bhindrawale here in Amritsar too.A sort of legend has been developed around him portraying him as a martyr for sikh cause and a saint.Morons.

Bhindranewale and stuff that happened IIRC is there in Amritsar temple as well ,that is not the issue i wouldn't forget if something like that happened to my community as well example partition.

The issue is only separate country inspite of 35% Hindus and 5%Jains being there in Punjab and that dream is mostly a NRI thing.

Most NRI young Sikhs keep forgetting that Amritsar is not the only holy place, its distributed throughout India from Maharashtra to Bihar and not to forget Hemkund Sahib(awesomely peaceful place ) in Uttrakhand.

Also Sikh population is distributed across India now, there is a GURU NANAK college and Punjab association in Chennai of all places.

I respect the Canadian defense minister for his very good behavior inspite of captain's foolishness, he is someone who has been groomed to exceed in politics, lets see how far he goes.

Dunno why Captain is acting so unwelcomely towards Harjit Sajjan here.He has impressed me so far as a leader and has taken some really good decisions to mitigate the damage done by Akalis and BJP over the years. One would have expected a bit maturity from a cm of his stature considering the other guy is a defence minister of a first world country and a source of pride for Sikhs and other Indians.Heard even Siromani Akali dal are honoring him as well in the temple premises.Should have kept the politics aside.

Had a question to ask you, and apologies to all for wrecking the thread.

Going to be heading to Jaipur soon with a group of friends to attend a wedding. Seem to recall that thats where you are from (sorry if I am wrong!)

If so, are you able recommend any tailors or places that we can buy some suitable attire. E.g. Bandhgala, etc.

Can't find much online about menswear places in Jaipur. Only places which I have come across are Manyavar, and FabIndia - which I would like to avoid if possible. Any help/advice you have would be appreciated. Thanks :)

There are loads of good quality shops around Jhotwara and Khatipura area too.But if you have time I would suggest visiting Jodhpur. They have some of the best show rooms in Rajasthan when it comes to the Rajput attires such as breaches, hunter shirts etc and not to mention the finely embroidered jootis. You can visit the famous Mehrangarh fort too where parts of dark knight rises were shot.
Sorry mods for derailing the thread lmao.

We have a sight seeing tour which our friend has arranged. Will visit Jodhpur, but only for a day. So not much time in case things need to be altered, etc.

Have also been suggested Diwan Saheb, and Jodhpur Tailors (both in Jaipur) just now by someone else. So hopefully will have enough places to get something. Thanks for your help though.

And yes, sorry to everyone again for spoiling the thread.

What is the name of the documentary ??

Harjit Singh has maintained a classy approach so far. Punjab CM is acting like a typical paindu here, something that adds to the stereotype.

Its a bbc documentary. Can be found easily on youtube.

One of my maternal uncle burnt alive along with the bike, terrible times sad thing is his mom and dad are still alive and very old, luckily they had another son to help them.

Mob violence is a terrible thing, as a country we are nowhere close to getting rid of it.N o one seems to care as well.

Bro where do you live ? The Canadian dream punjabi is very much alive. I can assure you that :)))

I saw the documentary. Horrific scenes post murder of Indira Ghandhi. So many men burnt alive and killed in Delhi, and rest of India. Counts in just Delhi was 5000 men. And that was the official number. I was unaware all this while was happened in the aftermath of Golden Temple attack and Indira Ghandhi murder. The Documentary shed some light on it.

To be honest, Sikh community is one of the most cherished communities in Canada. They are friendly, and nice neighbours. They would help you all the time and would go to extreme to support you in your causes. I can't believe this happened to Sikh community.

Yes it hurts a lot to watch that; or hear anything about that from our elders in punjab. It was not a riot; it was a genocide in delhi .

Even if he is India really has nothing to fear from the dead horse that is Khalistan. There will never be a Khalistan or Sikh homeland on earth. The Sikh's should accept it now instead of embarrassing themselves like their Bhindranwale did all those years. He ended up being killed for nothing.

Wasn't one Mr Bachchan accused of inciting riots in delhi. ?

We learned from that blunder I guess. As soon as news of Rajiv's assasination by LTTE in Tamil Nadu broke out, the first thing the centre did was to send a huge number of forces to all the Areas of delhi with significant Tamil Population, that prevented a repeat of what happened to the Sikhs.

Just so everyone is aware, the Sikh Community in Calgary were praising Jarnel Singh and criticizing the Indian govt., and the ones of the past, during the annual Stampede Parade. Funny thing, they were speaking in Punjabi while going through the parade, and people couldn't understand, except me.

Yes many sikhs hate amitabh for that. I have heard that amitabh on national tv doorshan said something like khoon ka badla khoon( Blood on Blood ); Its not on recording i guess. But people watched tv on that day do remember this.
Though amitabh wrote letter to akal takhth amritsar defending himself that he didnt say anything that cud have incited those riots. Its was not riots actually in delhi. It was well planned mass murder. Amitabh mother was a sikh too . just for your info.
Rajiv gandhi did worst in my opinion. he said "Some riots took place in the country following the murder of Indira Ji. We know the people were angry and for a few days it seems India had been shaken. But, when a might tree falls, it is only natural that the earth around it shakes indira gandhi murder."
