After biopics including Mary Kom, Dangal, Gold, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story were appreciated by audience and critics alike, Bollywood is set to receive yet another story based on India's shining Tennis star Sania Mirza and her inspiring story. After Ronnie Screwvala's last release Uri: The Surgical Strike was a hit at the box-office, he is set to make the biopic of India's ace lawn tennis player and present it on the big screen.

After the producer successfully negotiated for months and bagged the rights to make to film, fans are waiting to watch the remarkable story of the struggle, the highs, and the lows that Sania faced on her journey to become one of the best tennis players' in the world. The athlete was quoted by Mumbai Mirror as saying,

"It’s excitement combined with nervousness—a ‘butterfly in your stomach’ feeling—when you are about to let your life story out to the world. It’s what I felt when my biography was written and I feel exactly the same when my journey is going to be presented on the big screen. I know it’s in good hands with an astute producer like Ronnie (Screwvala), who’s known for telling stories impactfully. I am so excited to partner with him and his team at RSVP and honestly can’t wait for it to go on floors."

Sania, who is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, is the winner of six Grand Slam titles.

On the other hand, Ronnie's production house RSVP delivered back-to-back hits with Kedarnath starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Uri: The Surgical Strike. While Kedarnath went on to collect over Rs 66.52 crore, the Vicky Kaushal starrer collected a total of Rs 197.88 crore at the box-office.

One of the best tennis players in the world? Ok

There's one on Saina Nehwal coming too. Too many biopics imo.

I've watched PST, MK, BMB, Dangal, and MSD and liked a few.

Sania was a pioneer for women tennis in India. Besides it's Bollywood , so yeah.

Sania is one of the most accomplished Indian woman post independence.

It really baffles me why she gets such undue hate. Is it because she is Muslim or married to a Pakistani? The funnier thing is how some Indians try to prop up other Indian women active in mickey mouse sports like badminton in order to offset sania’s achievements.

Sania isn't hated. She has always been loved and admired in my country. There was this phase when she did get bad publicity due to her decision of marrying a Pakistani, I won't deny it. But it was for a short period. Sania is one of the biggest female icons in India.

To be fair it must be uncomfortable for Indians to see one of their premier female sports stars marrying a Pakistan cricketer. It wasn't a big deal in past years, you used to get Indian film actresses falling for Pak cricketers and everyone thought it was cute. Obviously relations are a lot more hostile now and these relationships burn more patriots up as a result.

Not sure where you got that hate thing from. Sania is incredibly loved and admired for her achievements throughout the country. Don't form your opinions based on the views of a few online Indians.
And while Badminton might seem mickey mouse sport to you , it's extremely popular in India and East/South East Asia and is quite competitive as well. What Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu achieved is by no means a small feat and therefore rightly deserve all the praise that come their way.

Exactly. It's unfair when people form their opinion based on online comments from a few worthless trolls. Sania has been so admired and loved here, we Indians know it.

Sania was an accomplished Indian sport woman but that’s about it...

After a bright start to her career - she faded away quite badly. Especially in the singles game whilst most critics and the public do not consider the doubles game to be as lucrative or prestigious. Still kudos to her for doing well in the doubles game.

However - she was down and dusted by 2009/10 when she began to lose form and gain weight. She had a good career by desi standards and rightfully was a pioneer for women’s tennis but many do feel she could have done much better.

The mickey mouse sport woman has a brand value equal to Kohli, not in India, but China.

Funny how Pakistanis talk up a gilli-danda level sport like squash and look down upon Badminton. :))

On topic, Sania was a pioneer, a top 30 singles player at her peak.

Nothing exceptional, but for an Asian woman, she did set an example and the biopic is well deserved.

Good money, will the woman endorse the Chinese company's products in India or China? Why Chinese companies investing in Indian badminton players, are these players household names in China?

Both. Someone like Kidambi Srikanth who isn't even as famous in his home country has an INR 35 crore Chinese endorsement too, that's more than most Indian Cricketers would even dream of.

These badminton players are some of the most recognized athletes in Asia, something South Asian Cricket fans don't really understand yet.

I dont care she married a Pakistani. Good for her. Her life. My problem is with her status as a sports icon. I believe she was mediocre in the sports that she played. Doubles or mixed doubles are glorified exhibition matches for me.

And i don't know why Pak posters get riled up when somebody is criticising a person who incidentally happened to be a Muslim. I don't know how they took to themselves as the defenders of Islam people . I will criticise people regardless of religion.

I think Pakistani opinions are reinforced by hostile relations in cricket. Since BCCI has followed a hardline political approach encouraged by the Indian govt, it seems like the trolls have official backing. Bilateral cricket series and opening of the IPL to Pakistan players would go a long way towards depriving the trolls the oxygen they thrive in.

Malik should only agree to a Pakistani actor to play him, that would give an oppurtunity to a Pakistani actor and also end bollywoods ban on Pakistani actors.

Are we now having biopics for every mediocrity?

Sure, doubles tennis players aren't quite as highly skilled as singles. But she was a pioneer and did get to the top rankings in doubles. That's not a minor achievement.

Progress always happens incrementally. Tendulkar's path to greatness was paved in no small measure by Gavaskar. Just like Imran made it easier for Wasim. Sania Mirza should be respected for achieving world-class level success in a very competitive sport.

But wait, why let obvious facts stop you from going off on an edgy whinge. :yk2

The reason for your undermining Sania ? Shoaib or her religion ? How come every Indians is not proud of her.

Yeah. It is Pakistan against the world. That is the only drama you guys can play.

This!

Saina & Sindhu have scaled far greater heights in sports than Sania ever did. However I've nothing against Sania too who did her best. However the only Tennis she was champ at was women's doubles which hardly anyone takes seriously. Not her fault though.

Aptly written.

Shoaib Malik should play himself, has an on screen persona, good looks (Mash Allah and no homo), articulated himself well, and will have great on screen chemistry with his wife.

So they are exhibition matches how many have you played in and how many grand slams have you won?

Don't think he will have a say in it

Hain?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a grandslam winner here to grace the forum with his /her presence.

Whoever they will pick up will look nothing like a Pakistani and may end up saying "Asalam O Alaikom" with "adab" like gesture whole movie. It is sad to see our next door neighbours still having no idea how Pakistanis look like and almost always fail to play one on screen.

What does a Pakistani look like?

I hope they give Malik's role to Johnny lever :asif :yk

Badminton is a more global and high profile sport than cricket, micket mouse sport will be kabaddi, squash or hockey. The Malaysian player Lee Chong Wei is worth more than Kohli. Lin Dan is the greatest Chinese sports icon active. Had Sania won grand slams in singles she would have been India's greatest female athlete but we don't take doubles success seriously, won enough of it and besides the best players skip it so it holds less value. Sania won't be among our top 5 female athletes in the last 15 years. No hate, just that the hype can get crazy sometimes for someone who hasn't even won an Olympic medal. And can't believe you brought the Muslim angle, any idea about her endorsements in India?

I have never warmed up to people like Sania Mirza and the spoilt Bollywood/Kollywood/Tollywood and cricket brats. No matter what these stars achieve, humility is important. That is why I respect Rahul Dravid and Mary Kom so much.

Sania Mirza’s ‘unacceptable’ demands to be chief guest in MP government sports awards include chartered plane, expensive make-up kit

India seems to be making biopics on every average performer. Lets face it even most Indians have no interest her at all. I could see why a movie on Tendulkar was made with him being the greatest batsman ever but Sania?? You gotta be kiddin me!!. Amitabh Bachchan deserves a biopic much more then she does for sure. Ranbir Kapoor would make a good Shoaib however it's highly unlikely he'd want to do a second lead here. Watched Azharuddin's biopic where in the end he tells the viewers to decide themselves if he's a cheat or not. Yes you are!:inti Sania appears greedy and full of herself as if she's a real great like Serena Williams, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf or Martina Navratalova.

Tell me about it !!! We mostly suck at sports and except a few non-global sports we have no international standing. So all these average sportsperson are hyped up and pampered like no tomorrow, in most of the countries such average performers won't even get a second look on the streets. They must consider themselves lucky that they get so much attention, endorsements, movies, books, ads because frankly their on-field achievements don't warrant this OTT celebration. They get more arrogant because of this, look at how Sania insulted a legend like Hingis who basically carried her in the doubles even though she was an aged hobbyist that time. At least winning an Olympic medal like Mary Kom, Sindhu, Saina, Sakshi would have made her a female icon but Sania failed there. We have such low standards.

Dont really watch Bollywood much so won't comment on the movie aspect .

However for people who are undermining Sania Mirza are probably post 2000 born kids.. When Sania burst into the scene she was the first women from India to be successful in a global sport.. We had PT USHA and Mary Kom while PT USHA was very famous Mary koms popularity came later on..

In addition to that a lot of Indians found Sania good looking as well so that's another reason for her popularity.. Sania was the blueprint for Saina and PV Sindhu and others.. She did well for herself and had a pretty decent career.

When i said all these i was accused of being a hater just because she married a Pakistani or she is a Muslim. Lucky you.

Say what you will about her achievements but she is a high profile celebrity and is well known in at least india and pakistan if not other countries too but at least in these two countries everyone knows her so i can understand why making a biopic on her.

What's next? A biopic on Ashok Dinda?
The lack of creativity in mainstream Bollywood is appalling.

From Twitter.

Sania was hyped in India due to her Religion. She is a mediocre player.

I rate Malik the Cricketer more than Sania the Tennis player. The Biopic should be on Malik :malik

Lol at Pakistanis trying to pull the Muslim or Pakistani card with Sania.

She has earned more than her due in fame and wealth from the Indian public and remains a popular figure.

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have achieved far more than her in tennis doubles, yet don't have her presence here. Singles career in tennis has always mattered more, not just in India but around the world.

Vicarious pride as usual.

Mickey Mouse it seems :))

Might as well get Malik to play it himself. The guy smacked the wickets with his own bat. That's like the biggest lol in cricket history.

I bet Malik will be better at acting than cricket.. especially he can’t be any worse than scoring runs in seaming conditions. Haha..

Who watches these films? A mediocre tennis player and a below mediocre cricketer.. they should do one on Waz and Sushmita Sen.. heard they were a thing back in the 90s ... bet that would be far more interesting!

Yes only singles matters in tennis, among tennis peers the doubles players are seen as singles failures out there trying to make a living. It is below the dignity for top singles players to play doubles, they might do it for Olympics.

Leander has an Olympic bronze in Atlanta Olympics singles, losing to Agassi in SF. He also had a great record in Davis Cup singles besides beating some top players like Sampras and Ivanisevic.

Back in the 70s and 80s Amritraj and Krishnans (father and son) had great singles career but nowhere near the same fame as modern era brats. They used to often reach semi finals of grand slams and Davis Cup finals, beating many top 10 players on the way. Amritraj especially had a great record against some of the ATGs of the sport, including many positive H2Hs and he did all that while battling against Asthma.

Mickey Mouse it seems :))

Can't understand the ignorance here. Badminton is much bigger than kabaddi, billiards, squash, wrestling, field hockey, shooting, archery, sports where South Asians have achieved some level of success.

She is a mediocre player by international standards, but she is the most successful women tennis player from India by some distance, and she is also a huge sporting icon when it comes to Indian women sports in general. Dismissing her achievements because she never excelled at the top level in singles is exhibiting gross misunderstanding of her impact on Indian women sports.

She is definitely worthy of a biopic. An inspirational story.

Sania who?? The Shoaib character will have no more then 20 minutes screen time and rightly so. There are so many who look like him, just grow a beard or stubble and Bob's your uncle!:warner Hollywood does not even produce movies on real legends like Graf and Navratalova says it all.

Will be a great story. A Muslim woman from India winning grandslams is an inspirational story. Despite her success there isn't a single woman, let alone a Muslim woman that is waiting in the wings should tell you how rare Sania's feats are.

Curious as to why there are no similar accomplished muslim women athletes from Pakistan relative to India seems to have accomplished women athletes (let alone muslim women athletes).

Could issues like this be the reason? -- https://tribune.com.pk/article/97340/how-to-give-female-athletes-in-pakistan-a-level-playing-field

Due to conservative cultural norms, women's sport is largely non existent in Pakistan. Just see Afridi's views on women's sports. The other day, I came across the highlights of Indian women's football team vs Pakistan women's team and the scoreline was 18-0 (apparently Bangladesh women defeated Pakistani women 17-0 too). Bear in mind, the state of women sports in our country is barely anything to boast about, so you can imagine the state of women's sports in Pakistan.

That said, there are a few flag bearers like Mahoor Shahzad who participated in the Olympics I think. The Pakistani mixed doubles team (containing Shahzad) played a few years back with an Indian mixed doubles team containing Saina Nehwal and I thought the Pakistani team acquitted themselves well in that game even though they lost.

A mediocre actress should be playing the role of a mediocre player. Sania may be big in India but in the history of Tennis she has achieved nothing, a nobody. Did not even come close to winning a major singles tournament. Shows the difference in class when the American's have not even made one biopic on their great Tennis players and India is making one on their non achiever.

Sania Mirza speaking in an interview:

"Shoaib is exceptional and is so blessed. He really works hard on himself to stay at his best. He is a very good example of a healthy lifestyle. He can definitely in my opinion -- and I have said this to him -- that if you can mentally take the pressure, play for two more years"

"We value and support each other but, in the end, we always go with our gut as we both are professional athletes. We are playing for many years. He has always been supportive and he told me that he's behind this decision"

Sania Mirza's Cryptic Post Amid Rumours Of Divorce From Shoaib Malik

It seems that all is not well between India tennis ace Sania Mirza and Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik. According to Ms Mirza's latest Instagram post, marital trouble seems to be brewing between the high-profile couple. Adding more fuel to the speculations of the rumours of her divorce, Ms Mirza took to her Instagram stories and shared a cryptic post, that has left her fans worried. She wrote, "Where do broken hearts go. To find Allah".

As of now, the exact reason behind their rift it is still unknown. However, a few media reports from Pakistan suggest that Mr Malik allegedly cheated on Sania during one of his TV shows. Pakistani media also reported that the couple have drifted apart and have been living separately for some time now. Rumour mills are abuzz saying that the couple is now only co-parenting son Izhaan. However, neither of the stars has commented anything about it.

In a star-studded wedding, Sania and Shoaib tied the knot in April 2010 and have a four-year-old son son Izhann. The couple recently celebrated the birthday of their son Izhaan Mirza Malik's birthday in Dubai, pictures of which were shared by Mr Malik, and not the tennis star.

This is not the first cryptic post shared by Sania Mirza. A few days back, she shared a picture with her son along with a caption saying, "The moments that get me through the hardest days.''
