Indian tourist raging over McDonalds burger

There are thousands of food outlets in the UK that cater to halal groupies.

Sure , but this gives an Indian tourist the right to whinge and cry after receiving what she is ordered? lol. It’s always the Muslims fault

I agree. All these beef, pork, kosher, halal rules religious folks have are rather funny.

It’s not the rules . She can eat what she likes . The issue here is she is used to Indian McDonald’s prob her local which has no beef burgers . So instead of checking before ordering she is blaming the staff for her own idiocy .

I suspect she told the cashier 'Veg burger' but he misheard it. Her fault for not checking the menu.
True. Surely you would check your receipt especially if you have dietary requirements? Also as a Hindu abroad why even bother with a burger? Why not get some fries, maybe some other sides? Or be very explicit when ordering the veggie option?? Pretty stupid mistake from her.

It was her fault. She ordered the wrong item. Why was she yelling? That cashier was too nice. He should've yelled back. Police should've been called.

She should be banned from Malaysia as she is clearly mentally unstable. :inti

Yeah religious people should know their religions have some absurd rules and be careful themselves when they're eating outside their comfort zones

I'm guessing it was her first time out of India and she couldn't imagine McDonalds would serve a beef burger. That or like @RexRex said, she ordered a veg burger and was misheard. Naive and overly emotional but I wouldn't make fun of her.

A Muslim friend of mine once was served bacon bits in his omelette by mistake. He was upset and stopped eating as soon as he realised but didn't make a huge fuss about it.

She should've done the same but women tend to be more emotional.

Yelling and crying because she ate it by the looks of things..

Yes.

What was she complaining about? I don't understand. She ordered the wrong item (her fault) and she ate it.

I guess she is one of those females who doesn't believe in self-accountability. It is always someone else's fault. :inti

Maybe she ordered it as she always desired a beef burger or Big Mac so took the opportunity only to later feel guilty

Having McDonald’s itself is blasphemy.

Imagine traveling to have McDonald’s when plenty of better local authentic options exist.

Most practising Muslims wouldn't visit them in the early days, that's why they opened their own outlets with the distinctive halal logo. Once they gained trust in the national brands they started using them.

It has happened to me a couple of times in the UK with non halal meat. It is a big deal but we are taught that if we commit an error unknowingly it's not a sin for us so generally the reaction is mainly calm. Once my friend found out his nursery school gave pork by mistake to some Muslim kids - that wasn't a calm conversation from the parents.

And your point around her expectations of Mcdonald outside of India are very valid too. Again, I have seen Muslims from Pakistan and Gulf automatically assume UK McDonald's is hall because they eat it as normal back home.

In this case, given the Hindu strictness around beef I can understand the outpouring of emotion from her. It's misplaced, as it's not the staffs fault, but it's human nature to lash out when feeling helpless.

So like you I can't make fun of her for this. I feel sorry that her religious principles were violated for a McDonald's of all things. Hopefully her experience can help other travelling Hindus avoid such places.

I have seen another video of an Indian male customer shouting angrily at staff in one of these fast food joints, that was actually much worse than this. In that video as well the staff handled it very calmly and sympathetically while the customer was ranting and raving. I think Indians abroad need to learn how to complain with some manners, staff at these outlets won't appreciate being abused, they are only trying to do their job.

Ngl, I kinda miss it.

The smell of the filet o fish.

The freshly made chips dipped into the McFlurry ice cream.

Yeah some subcontinental tourists don't behave too well abroad. Most are pretty scared and mousy though. Too nervous to complain about anything. In awe of all the cleanliness and how things actually work.

The worst though, are you Brits. Rude and obnoxious everywhere you go.

From my understanding McDonald’s did not make the mistake. She ordered a regular item which in India is non-beef and the same item outside of India contains beef. Maybe like a Big Mac or something. I think in India that is chicken.

Yeah. Should also ban all those halal products in Western countries.

That aside, enjoyed her meltdown.
Why ban halal? That isn’t very tolerant of Western Countries then is it. They claim to be liberal democracies and claim to have superior political systems to the rest of the world where freedom of speech and religion is a way of life for them. They won’t be living up to their own principles if they ban halal.

The days of being ignorant about Indians and being unapologetic about it at the same time are gone.

18% of the global population is Indian. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, there will always be plenty of Indians around you. So learn about them and their culture and sensitivities in order to avoid such situations.

McDonalds in Middle East is light-years ahead of Europe and India.

The cult move to the Middle East knowing that the cow is sacrificial but then pull this stunt in another Muslim majority country anyway.

Cult should go eat plant based meat if they want to assimilate and be accepted outside of India.

Not sure about Malyasia but all McDonalds in UK sell burgers containing beef as 'cheese burgers'. This happened to me as well when I first came to UK thinking cheese burger will be veggie with cheese in it. Only when I got the order, I realized it has beef in it. Obviously I didnt made any scene but just saying its confusing, especially someone coming from India. Why just not say Beef burger instead of Cheese burger?

@sweep_shot and other usual suspects acting like fool again just because the lady is Indian.

Going to restaurants esp fast food joints which serve food you can’t have is always tricky.

Only at very high end restaurants as in Michelin Star places they even ask at the very start if you have dietary restrictions.

But at cheap places like McD, they can be very careless, so unfortunately you have to emphasize multiple times that I don’t want x ingredient in there till you get it through their head.

Happened to me at a restaurant where the server brought pork dumplings twice even though I told him at the start to make sure they don’t have pork.

Alhamdullilah Allah gave me the intuition that by just looking at them without having to touch I was like, is this pork? And he said oh my bad went back, came back out, asked him again, and he messed it up again lmao.

3rd try he brought it told me this time it should be fine, but while he stood there we broke apart the dumplings with the fork to make sure it was shrimp and not pork.

Just how it is unfortunately because 99% of the time you will care more about what you’re eating than the person serving the food

The term "burger" implies a beef burger, particularly in American English where the term originated.

You guys love to take offence when a westerner says Naan Bread or Roti Bread.

Now does 'cheese burger' makes sense to you? Cheese Naan, Garlic Naan? Do you say 'Garlic Lahsun Naan Bread'?

Only when it explicitly has a prefix like Chicken, Veggie, Salmon you are supposed to differentiate from standard beef burger.

The cultural understanding is so strong in the US that ordering a "burger with cheese" (a cheeseburger) is universally understood to be a beef patty with cheese, not a cheese-only sandwich.

Also a hamburger and burger are same and interchangeable, No a hamburger does not contain Ham (Pork). The word burger is a shortened form of hamburger, because it originated from the German city of Hamburg, where a minced beef dish called Hamburg steak was developed.

I always do my due diligence, it doesn't take more than a minute to ask ingredients. I always do that at East Asian food places as I don't have cultural understanding or knowledge.

She needs to get over and move on. I was served beef burger before and I are half of it before I realized it had beef. I threw the rest of it away. I was new to US back then and ordered a cheese burger.

For the people saying she should be arrested and apologize, I wonder how they feel if they are accidentally served a Pork sandwich. You will be appalled and no amount of Ghusal will clam down your anger. :dw

That’s how it’s always been. A cheese burger basically means having a slice of cheese on the standard burger which is a beef patty. It’s like saying cheese pizza in America, where you don’t say cheese and tomato pizza as the tomato sauce is a given standard.

I disagree completely with this stance. Restaurants are not going to cater for the local culture and not for international requirements. For example, in the U.K. our drink sizes are much smaller than the US. We aren’t going to change that just because Americans are dominant across the globe and visit the U.K. a lot.

Agreed. I think this is why I often think Pakistanis have actually integrated better than Indians to this country.

Will say though, KFC, McD and Burger King in Malaysia and from rest of south east Asia is the best iteration of these restaurants’ food compared their branches in the rest of the world.

You have menu items with their own regional spin ofc but even the classics items are really good.

If I saw auntie throwing a fit, would’ve kindly offered to take the beef burger off her hands :asghar

The term ‘non veg’ is so confusing. I’ve only ever heard Indians use it. Everywhere else people just say vegetarian or vegan. ‘Non veg’ sounds like someone forgot to finish the sentence.

Non Resident Indian?
