Surprised there isn't a thread on this. The Godi media, which is pretty much now almost all Indian media, have been keeping this down, instead choosing to focus on rubbish news like Pathaan.

There's a reason though - the main accused is a BJP MP and Modiji had promised Vinesh Phogat he would protect her when she aired her issues in a personal meeting several months back. The architect of the beti bachao as usual did nothing leading to the sit-in to draw attention to the scandal.

Veteran Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday, 18 January 2023 alleged that WFI President Brij Bhushan has been involved since many years in sexually exploiting women wrestlers.

Vinesh further claimed that several coaches at the national camp in Lucknow have also exploited women wrestlers.

Several wrestlers also staged a four-hour-long dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Wednesday. Vinesh made a shocking revelation that she was never harassed or exploited, but one of the victims of harassment was present at the dharna.

The 28-year-old also claimed that she had received death threats from officials close to President Brij Bhushan after she shared issues around wrestling in India with PM Narendra Modi after the Tokyo Olympics.

Sakshi Malik, Sarita Mor, Sangeeta Phogat, Anshu Malik, Sonam Malik, Satyawart Malik, Jitendra Kinha, Amit Dhankar, and Sumit Malik were among the 30 wrestlers present at the protest besides Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia.

Mary Kom-Led Panel To Probe #MeToo Charges By Wrestlers: 10 Facts

Sexual harassment allegations against India's wrestling federation chief and some coaches will be probed by a panel including respected former athletes, the Indian Olympics authority said on Friday, as the government scrambled to quell the scandal.

1) The Indian Olympic Association announced a seven-member panel will probe the charges against Mr Singh after an emergency meeting late in the evening. The panel will include noted athletes Mary Kom, Dola Banerjee, Alaknanda Ashok, Yogeshwar Dutt and Sahdev Yadav.

2) The announcement came as some of India's most celebrated wrestlers, who have been on protest for three days, met with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, after the first round of talks last night failed to reach a breakthrough.

3) Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has denied all charges and refused to step down. "If I speak, there will be a tsunami... I am not here because of someone's charity. I have been elected by the people," he told reporters in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda.

4) Minister Anurag Thakur, who dialled Mr Singh and cautioned him against making any statement to media, had met the protesting wrestlers for four hours, between 10 pm and 2 am, without any headway yesterday.

5) Ahead of the second meeting, the wrestlers sent a letter to PT Usha, head of the Indian Olympic body, seeking action against Mr Singh.

6) "Vinesh Phogat was mentally harassed and tortured by the WFI chief after she missed out on an Olympic medal in Tokyo. She almost contemplated suicide," the wrestlers wrote in their letter to Ms Usha, adding that "they fear for their lives".

7) Vinesh Phogat has agreed to reveal the identity of the victims to the Indian Olympic Association committee.

8) Decorated Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik besides Vinesh Phogat and others, have been staging a sit-in protest for the last three days at Jantar Mantar against the WFI president, accusing him of sexual exploitation and intimidation and have demanded that the federation be disbanded.

9) The Sports Ministry has urged the protesters to wait as it sought a response from the federation. The wrestlers' body was asked to file its reply by 3 pm today.

10) Earlier on Wednesday, the centre had made it clear that if the WFI does not respond in the next three days, the sports ministry "will proceed to initiate action against the federation in terms of the provisions of the National Sports Development Code, 2011."

I got to know he is a BJP MP quite late. Very few sources that have bothered to report this, include this bit.
This cretin is a multiple terms sanghi MP. He even helped Dawood and his henchmen during '90s.

Wonder where is feku and his cronies who thunder that they'll get Dawood back in India.

Here is his list of crimes,

Singh is not new to controversy. He was arrested in the mid-1990s under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) for allegedly helping associates of gangster Dawood Ibrahim and spent several months in Tihar jail.

According to his election affidavit, he has four pending cases against him. Charges against him include causing voluntary harm to public servant (section 332 of the Indian Penal Code, or IPC), robbery (section 392), attempt to murder (section 307) and illegal payments in connection with an election (section 171 H).

In 2004, after shifting to Balrampur, Singh was replaced by Ghanshyam Shukla by the BJP as the party’s candidate from Gonda. Shukla was killed in a road accident which, some alleged, was actually “murder”. In an interview to Scroll.in, he said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had called and said “Marwaa diyaa (you had him killed)”.

In his younger days he was reportedly a motorcycle thief, and even part of a liquor mafia in the 1980s.

He was also involved in a gunfight in 1993 and was acquitted by a local Gonda court in December last year in the case. He had been accused of attempting to murder Vinod Kumar Singh, also known as Pandit Singh, a former minister who was once friends with Singh.

"There'll Be Tsunami If...": Wrestling Body Chief Amid Calls To Quit

As wrestlers protesting against alleged sex harassment stayed firm on demands for his resignation, wrestling body chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh today threatened revelations that, he said, would cause a "tsunami".

"If I make a statement, there will be a tsunami. I am not here on anyone's charity. I am an elected representative," Mr Singh said.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief has refused to quit as several celebrated Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik besides Vinesh Phogat, on protest in Delhi for the last two days, accuse him of sexual exploitation and intimidation.

The wrestlers are insistent that Mr Singh be sacked immediately as the wrestling body chief because of the of #MeToo allegations, saying they "fear for their lives".

"There is no question of resigning. I have not spoken with the Prime Minister's Office and Home Minister," Mr Singh said earlier today.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur reportedly summoned Mr Singh and cautioned him against making any statement to media over the worry that it will exacerbate tensions.

Anurag Thakur met with the protesting athletes for four hours until 2 am last night without any resolution.

Today, the wrestlers wrote to PT Usha, head of Indian Olympic body, alleging mental harassment by Mr Singh.

"Vinesh Phogat was mentally harassed and tortured by the WFI chief after she missed out on an Olympic medal in Tokyo. She almost contemplated suicide," the wrestlers wrote, adding that "they fear for their lives".

On Wednesday, the Centre had made it clear that if the WFI does not respond to the allegations in three days, the sports ministry "will proceed to initiate action against the federation in terms of the provisions of the National Sports Development Code, 2011."

Phogat family to is close to BJP with Babita having fought haryana elections on BJP ticket. Once a government is elected they will install their people in every institution be it UPA or NDA. If he is proven guilty dont think he will last for too long in that role.

With such a crime filled record, no wonder he is a sanghi MP.

feku who has opinion on anything and everything, is unsurprisingly mute on this.

As is his wont, Beti bachao beti padhao is just a jumla just like every other thing he utters for consumption of his followers.

This guy (known criminal as the number of cases on him indicate) is WFI prez for more than a decade now! That's insane.

Vinesh Phogat "Was Tortured After Missing Out On Olympic Medal": Athletes

The protesting wrestlers on Friday reached out to Indian Olympic Association (IOA), demanding formation of an enquiry committee to probe the allegations of sexual harassment they have levelled against WFI President, a day after threatening to lodge multiple FIRs against the sports administrator.

In a letter addressed to IOA President PT Usha, the wrestlers said they have been informed by several of their younger colleagues about the sexual harassment they faced at the hands of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The letter has been signed by five wrestlers including Tokyo Olympics medallists Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia.

Rio Games bronze winner Sakshi Malik and World Championship medallists Vinesh Phogat and Deepak Punia have also signed.

The wrestlers reiterated their demand that WFI be disbanded and its President be sacked.

They also demanded that a new committee is formed, in consultation with the wrestlers, to run the affairs of the national federation.

What lies!!!!

This is headlines news on every channel. But few posters want to push their agenda at every chance.

Brij Bhusan Singh was a long time Samajwadi party member and joined BJP only few years back.

The wrestlers instead of lodging a criminal complain that will make sure that the guy is arrested want the govt to disband the association.

The government cannot disband the association without violating the Olympic charter. Thats why they have roped in the IOA and initiated action under POSH act 2013.

He has been sidelined in the BJP years back. His run ins with Yogi Adityanath himself means he has no powerful position inside BJP.

Him being preciously from Samaj wadi explains the silence of opposition as well.

Mess!

He doesn't need SP or BJP to win. His writ runs across 5-6 districts in UP. He is so powerful that in 2011 he defeated a sitting Congress MP and son of a sitting CM, Deepender Hooda to win WFI elections. 2011 Congress was in power.

Him being preciously from Samaj wadi explains the silence of opposition as well.

Mess!
Lol, he won 1 parliamentary election as SP MP (in 2009) and 5 as a sanghi MP!

Not only that, his wife is an office bearer with sanghis.

His son is a sanghi MLA.

What more proof does anyone need to prove that he has sanghi blood in his veins.

Even in '90s when he was helping out Dawood and co, he was a sanghi.

Didn't stop anyone to give him ticket in elections after elections.

And who told you opposition is silent?

They have raised this dastardly issue vehemently. Just that godi media can't see beyond jumlas.

He is part of BJP.. as simple as that. BJP should chuck him out.

He doesn't enjoy much clout in the BJP. But he is nearly undefeatable in his fortress no matter which party he stands from. He has shuttled between SP and BJP.

He has agreed to step aside as both IOA and the government conducts inquiries.

Brij Bhusan Singh was a long time Samajwadi party member and joined BJP only few years back.

Only a few years back you say? He's been a BJP MP since 2014. That's nearly a decade. Pity the sanskari party's washing machine hasn't been able to clean him up. Based on the allegations, he seems to have gotten worse in the last 9 years.

Anyway, the list of BJP members/leaders/MPs harassing or assaulting women is long but the convictions, short.

It starts at the top you see. Modiji as CM using state machinery to spy on the young female architect from Bengaluru who was hired for a government project. Remember that?

Lol at minions trying desperately to distance this criminal from sanghis'.

Despite him not having any 'clout' in sanghis, he himself is a multiple term MP and his family members are office bearers and MLAs.

Figure that!

And it's not a problem with this cretin only

sanghis harassing ladies is not restricted to this creature only. List is endless, starting with their master and his sidekick.

Raised serious questions about BJPs choice of new leaders in that case. They did the same thing in Bengal with TMC goons and got backstabbed.

Maybe they should focus on getting leaders who are educated and have a clean background.

The point I am trying to make is that no media was putting the news out until it was clear that it would not remain silent. And even then the Godi media was trying to not point out the relationship of the accused with BJP.

India's top wrestlers have called off a protest after the head of the sport's national federation reportedly agreed to step aside until claims of sexual harassment against him are investigated.

Dozens of male and female wrestlers, including Olympic and Commonwealth medallists, had announced a boycott of all competitions until Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was removed.

Singh, who is also a member of parliament from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has denied the allegations.

Wrestler Bajrang Punia announced the decision to call off the protest after talks with India's Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday.

"The minister told us that a committee will be formed (to look into the allegations) and it will complete its work in one month," Punia told reporters.

"We are confident that a thorough probe will be conducted."

Thakur said Singh "will step aside" until the investigation is completed within four weeks, the Times of India reported.

The protesting athletes were being led by Vinesh Phogat, a three-time Commonwealth Games champion and one of India's most decorated woman wrestlers.

Phogat has accused Singh of harassing "several young wrestlers" and said that she knew "at least 10 to 20 girls" who had recounted sexual harassment at wrestling camps.

She has said that both girls and boys have come forward to accuse other senior figures in the sport of harassment and bullying.

In a letter to P.T. Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Friday, Phogat and other top athletes said it had taken a lot of courage for them to come forward.

Phogat said that she was "mentally harassed and tortured" by Singh after she failed to win an Olympic medal and "almost contemplated suicide".

Hours after receiving the letter, the IOA announced a seven-member panel to investigate all harassment charges against Singh.

Singh has dismissed the allegations as a political ploy to usurp his position and told media he was "ready to be hanged" if even a single woman wrestler proved the sexual harassment charge.

India is a deeply hierarchical society and Phogat said many wrestlers were intimidated into not coming forward because of their humble origins.

The allegations come months after the coach of the country's national cycling team was sacked following sexual harassment charges.

India's #MeToo movement gathered momentum in 2018 after a Bollywood actress accused a senior actor of sexual harassment.

Soon after, other women came forward with multiple allegations, including against a former government minister, but activists say there has been little fundamental change.

The Wrestling Federation Of India today said that the athletes who have levelled sexual harassment charges against the WFI chief have a hidden agenda.

"The protest is not in the best interest of the Wrestlers nor for the promoting good Wrestling in India, but it has some personal as well as hidden agenda to dislodge the current fairest and strict management of WFI and also by conspiracy to create such adverse atmosphere in public to create undue pressure," the wrestling body said in a letter to the ministry of youth affairs.

"Wrestling Chief To Step Aside Till Probe Over": Minister On #MeToo Charge

BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will step aside from India's wrestling body for four weeks during which an oversight committee will look into allegations of sexual harassment against him, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters Friday.

1) After a meeting that lasted seven hours, Mr Thakur, flanked by some of India's most celebrated wrestlers, in a news conference assured that the government will support the wrestlers at every step of their battle.

2) "An oversight committee will be set up. It will take four weeks to give a report. Any allegation, whether sexual harassment or financial wrongdoing, we will dive deep and investigate them. We will take action after that," Mr Thakur said.

3) After meeting Mr Thakur, the wrestlers called off their protest against alleged sexual harassment and misappropriation of funds.

4) "Till the time the investigation is not complete, a committee will see to the day-to-day working (of the Wrestling Federation of India)...I thank the athletes for speaking to me," Mr Thakur said.

5) Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said the minister has assured he is with the wrestlers at every step. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also always supported our athletes," Mr Punia said.

6) The Indian Olympic Association has also announced a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations against Mr Singh. The panel will have noted athletes Mary Kom, Dola Banerjee, Alaknanda Ashok, Yogeshwar Dutt and Sahdev Yadav as members.

7) Mr Singh has denied the allegations and refused to resign. "If I speak, there will be a tsunami...I am not here because of someone's charity. I have been elected by the people," he told reporters in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda.

8) Earlier, Mr Thakur had dialled Mr Singh and cautioned him against making any statement to the media.

9) Ahead of the meeting on Friday night, the wrestlers had sent a letter to PT Usha, the head of the Indian Olympic body, seeking action against Mr Singh.

10) "Vinesh Phogat was mentally harassed and tortured by the WFI chief after she missed out on an Olympic medal in Tokyo. She almost contemplated suicide," the wrestlers wrote in their letter to Ms Usha, adding "they fear for their lives". Ms Phogat has agreed to reveal the identity of the sexual harassment survivors to the Indian Olympic Association committee.

Wrestling Body's Emergency General Council Meeting In Ayodhya Called Off

The Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) emergency general council meeting, scheduled here for Sunday, was called off after the Sports Ministry directed it to suspend all ongoing activities owing to the various allegations against the sports body and its president.

The ministry on Saturday said it has asked the WFI to suspend "all ongoing activities with immediate effect", including the Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP, the federation president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's stronghold.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been accused of sexually harassing women wrestlers and working like a dictator by some of the country's top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Ravi Dahiya.

The ministry on Saturday also suspended WFI's assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, a fallout of the grapplers' allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the sports body's chief.

It had decided to suspend Mr Tomar, "with immediate effect, to ensure proper functioning of WFI".

On Friday, Mr Sharan's son Prateek had said that his father would issue a statement on the allegations against him after the sports body's meeting.

While the ministry has directed Mr Sharan to stay away from the day-to-day affairs of the WFI, he was present during the wrestling event in Nandini Nagar on Saturday.

Also on Friday, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had announced the formation of an oversight committee to probe the charges levelled by the top wrestlers against Mr Sharan and the WFI.

The ministry is expected to announce the names of its oversight committee members on Sunday.

In a press release on Saturday, the ministry said it "has communicated to the Wrestling Federation of India on Saturday that in view of the Government's decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes against the Federation, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect, unless the Oversight Committee is formally appointed and takes over the day to day functioning of WFI".

"Not Consulted": Top Wrestlers Unhappy With Sports Ministry's New Committee

A day after the sports ministry formed an Oversight Committee, to probe allegations of sexual misconduct against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials and to run the day-to-day affairs of the body, top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia tweeted that they were not consulted before forming the committee. Boxing great Mary Kom was named as the head of the five-member Oversight Committee that will probe the sexual harassment allegations against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The government-appointed committee will also run the day-to-day affairs of WFI for the next one month.

The other members of the panel are Olympic medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former SAI executive director - teams - Radhica Sreeman.

"We were assured that we would be consulted before the Oversight Committee was formed. It is very sad that we were not even consulted before the formation of this committee. Narendramodi amitShah @ianuragthakur," Vinesh Phogat wrote in a tweet.

The announcement of the panel was made by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Monday.

Thakur had decided to form the committee on Saturday following a three-day sit-in protest by some of the country's top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya against the WFI and its chief.

The wrestlers ended their protest after a breakthrough was achieved during a marathon second round of talks with Thakur late on Friday night.

"The WFI president will not discharge his duties and stay away from day-to-day affairs of WFI. The day-to-day working of WFI will be looked after by the Oversight Committee till their mandated duration and it will also probe the serious allegations against WFI and its chief," Thakur said.

"The Oversight Committee will be under the chairmanship of world champion Mary Kom. Along with her, Yogeshwar Dutt, MOC member and Dronacharya awardee Trupti Murgunde, fomer TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former ED Teams, SAI Radica Sreeman will be part of the committee.

"In the next one month, this committee will probe into the sexual allegations and other charges after talking to all parties and submit its report. Till then all the day-to-day decisions and workings of WFI will be taken care of by this committee," he added.

Both May Kom and Yogeshwar are also part of the the seven-member committee formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to probe the allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the WFI chief.

Besides legendary boxer Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, the IOA panel includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav.

The other members of the IOA committee are two advocates -- Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra -- besides former shuttler and IOA joint secretary Alaknanda Ashok, who is its vice chairperson.

The agitating wrestlers, including young Anshu Malik, Sangeeta Phogat and Sonam Malik among others, started the sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday and demanded the sacking of the WFI chief.

The wrestlers also demanded that the WFI be disbanded immediately and a new panel is formed, including grapplers in it.

Top Indian wrestlers who earlier this year protested against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, and other trainers, accusing them of sexually exploiting women wrestlers, are back at Delhi's Jantar Mantar with a fresh police complaint. Seven women wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment complaint against federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at the Connaught Place police station in Central Delhi. A First Information Report based on the complaint is yet to be filed, wrestler Sakshee Malikkh said, adding that they are frustrated that a government panel report on the issue hasn't been made public yet. "We want the report, which has recorded women wrestlers' statement, to be public. It's a sensitive issue, one of the complainants is a minor girl," she said, adding that names of the complainants must not be leaked.

"We won't leave from here until Brij Bhushan is arrested," Bajrang Punia, another top wrestler, said. Vinesh Phogat said they aren't getting any response from the government despite repeated attempts. "We are going to sleep and eat here till we get justice. We have been trying to contact them (Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and other relevant authority) for three months. The members of the committee are not responding to us, sports ministry has also not said anything, they don't even pick up our calls. We have won medals for the country and have put our careers at stake for this," she said.

The Sports Ministry had formed a five-member oversight committee, headed by legendary boxer MC Mary Kom, on January 23 and asked it to submit its findings in one month. Later, it extended the deadline by two weeks and also added Babita Phogat to the probe panel as its sixth member on the insistence of the protesting wrestlers.

The committee submitted its report in the first week of April, but the ministry is yet to make its findings public. However, sources said the wrestlers could not prove the sexual harassment allegations against the WFI boss after several hearings.

The wrestlers had earlier said they did not want to take the legal route because they had faith in the Prime Minister, but had warned of going to the police if the government didn't act. They said they were not satisfied with talks at the Sports Ministry brokered by Olympian Babita Phogat, a member of the BJP and part of the Haryana government. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had also met the wrestlers over the issue, and called the allegations "serious".

The Delhi Commission for Women, a local body that looks after women's issues, has issued a notice to Delhi Police for failing to register an FIR in the matter. The wrestlers had complained to the Commission that they have given a written complaint to the Delhi Police two days back, but their FIR has not been registered so far.

"The complainant has informed the Commission that several women wrestlers including a minor have alleged that the accused person has indulged in the crime of sexual harassment against them during his tenure at the Wrestling Federation of India," DCW chief Swati Maliwal said.

It claimed that the complainant informed the Commission that instead of an FIR being filed in the matter, some of the complainants and their family members have started getting phone calls enquiring about the identities of the complainants from an IPS officer posted in the Sports Ministry.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is a BJP MP, has refuted the charges. "All the sexual harassment allegations are false, and I will commit suicide if they are found to be true," the 66-year-old was earlier quoted as saying by news agency ANI. The federation said that the athletes who have levelled sexual harassment charges against the WFI chief have a hidden agenda.

Awaiting a report by a government panel on the sexual harassment allegations against him, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has said that he will not contest for the president's post in WFI election on May 7 but hinted that he might look for a new role within the federation. He has served three four-year terms as president in a row and according to the Sports Code after completing 12 years as WFI chief, he is ineligible to contest for the top post.

The protest began on January 18 with triple Commonwealth Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat, one of India's most decorated women wrestlers, went public with the charges. Ms Phogat said she never faced such exploitation herself, but claimed many wrestlers were intimidated from coming forward because of their humble backgrounds.

The elite wrestlers had said they weren't satisfied after talks with the government and "won't wrestle another day" till their demands are met. Alleging mismanagement in the functioning of the federation, they demanded a complete overhaul of the federation.

Vinesh Phogat, 28, made the allegations against Mr Singh and trainers at a public protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar, backed by several other top wrestlers like Bajrang Punia, Sakshee Malikkh, Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Punia. "Women wrestlers have been sexually harassed at national camps by coaches and also the WFI president. I know at least 10-20 girls in the national camp who have come and told me their stories," she said, tearing up.

Brij Bhushan earlier this month said it was laughable what the wrestlers said during the government panel hearings.

"I could not stop laughing what these wrestlers were saying. If I had anything inappropriate with Sakshi Malik, then why did she invite me to her wedding. They come to me with their personal matters and also family issues.

"They sit with my son and daughter-in-law and have food together, and now suddenly they are alleging that I have harassed them. If that's the case, why do they come to my home?" The WFI boss said the federation will not have revenge in mind when the issue is sorted.

Wrestlers' Allegations "Serious": Supreme Court Notice To Delhi Police
The court also ordered the redaction of the names of the seven complainant wrestlers from judicial records to suppress identities in the sexual harassment case.

Two days after some top Indian wrestlers resumed their protest against the wrestling federation chief's alleged sexual misconduct, the Supreme Court today issued notice to Delhi Police on the complainants' request seeking an urgent hearing on the petition seeking registration of a police case against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. The court also ordered the redaction of the names of the seven complainant wrestlers from judicial records to suppress identities in the sexual harassment case, and fixed April 28 as the date for a hearing.
Seven women wrestlers had moved the top court alleging non-registration of FIR on their sexual harassment charge.

"There are serious allegations made in the petition by wrestlers who have represented India in international games about sexual harassment meted out to them. The matter requires consideration by this court," a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said. The complaints which were being given in sealed cover shall again be resealed and placed under the petition, the court said.

The wrestlers, protesting at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, had yesterday said that they would remain at the protest site till police file an FIR in the case. They claimed the police had refused to file a case even when they submitted their complaint several days ago.

What do you expect from someone who once produced the Freudian slip, "Beti pathao".
I bet that was not a slip by any yardstick.

Once in a while even the biggest liar of all time speaks what he is really thinking at that point of time.

In any case, remember the snoop gate unleashed at the behest of saheb?

What’s the point of you being a “wrestler” if after a couple of warnings, you can’t pick that piece of pakora smelling Brij guy junk and slam him on a hard floor to break the homes in his rear end?

India's top wrestlers on Friday said they will continue their sit-in protest in New Delhi demanding "immediate arrest" of their federation chief, accused of sexually harassing several female players, despite an assurance of police action.

Here are the 10 latest developments in the case:

“We respect Supreme Court's order, but we don't have faith in Delhi Police. This fight is not for an FIR. This fight is to punish people like him. He needs to be in jail and stripped of his portfolios,” the wrestlers said, after the Delhi Police told the Supreme Court that a case will be filed today against the influential chief of India's wrestling federation, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Among the wrestlers who are protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, are stars like Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia. They had approached the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing into their request seeking a case against Mr Singh, the Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MP. The Supreme Court had issued notice to Delhi Police on the wrestlers' request, alleging no case was registered on their charges.

"There are serious allegations made in the petition by wrestlers who have represented India in international games about sexual harassment meted out to them. The matter requires consideration by this court," said a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
Brij Bhushan Singh, who had denied the sexual misconduct allegations and indicated he will fight fiercely to prove he is innocent, yesterday released a video saying he would wish to embrace death the day he feels helpless.

"Friends, the day I introspect on what I gained or lost, and feel that I no longer have the strength to fight; the day I feel helpless, I would wish for death as I won't be living a life like that. Instead of living such a life, I would wish that death takes me in its embrace," the accused wrestling body chief said in the video.

The protesting wrestlers have also sought time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the charges against his party's MP. "PM Modi sir talks about 'Beti Bachao' and 'Beti Padhao', and listens to everyone's 'Mann Ki Baat'. Can't he listen to our 'mann ki baat'?" Olympian Sakshi Malik said at a recent media interaction, referring to the PM's monthly radio programme.

Indian Olympic Association chief PT Usha has criticised the public protest by the wrestlers. Stating that their protest "amounts to indiscipline", she said they should have waited for the report of a committee that is looking into their charges.

The protesting wrestlers said they were hurt by Ms Usha's statement and that they were looking up to her for support. Asian Games medallist Vinesh Phogat alleged she had even dialled her to discuss the matter, but she did not answer her call, hinting she could be "under some kinds of pressure".

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who had formed the committee to look into the charges, said yesterday the government stands with the players and he himself spoke to the protesters for 12 hours. The committee submitted its report on April 5, but the ministry is yet to make its findings public.

The wrestlers first took to the streets in January with their charges against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and other trainers but withdrew their protest following an assurance by Mr Thakur. They returned to the capital city with fresh protests this week, alleging no action was taken on their charges.

Few things

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is a goon. But that doesn't prove sexual harassment charges.

There is some whisper of caste being involved here. Will not comment on that but will not dismiss it either.

The committee led by MC Mary Kom and Yogeshwar Dutt both Olympic medal winners did an enquiry and found the allegations untrue.

Vinesh phogat was suspended for indiscipline in Tokyo. Sakshi Malik was also suspended before that. Both during the tenure of Singh.

Bajrang punia is married to Sangeeta phogat. Sister of Vinesh.

It's difficult when one's livelihood depends on the profession. They Probably didn't have an employment backup. The rich and powerful do all sorts of horrible stuff in every part of the world.

An idol crumbles: How PT Usha missed the podium again

The nation’s all-time great track star and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha thinks that the Jantar Mantar agitation against wrestling body president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was not good for the country’s image. She also labelled the Olympians taking up the cause of the women wrestlers alleging sexual harassment against Singh, indisciplined.

For someone so conscious about the nation’s global perception, it would be interesting to know how Usha feels about Singh representing Indian wrestling on the world stage. The police complaint by 7 women wrestlers, one of them a minor, isn’t the WFI president’s first brush with the law.

Being booked under TADA for allegedly harbouring Dawood Ibrahim associates in the 90s, Singh’s name figures in several ongoing court cases. Arms act violations and attempt to murder charges are stains that don’t make him a poster boy of the sports administration’s squeaky clean image. A history-sheeter as federation chief – is it a factoid that Indians can proudly flaunt at wrestling halls around the world?

Usha didn’t stop at that. Sounding like a matriarch angered by a family secret getting leaked, she pulled up the wrestlers for taking to the streets and not approaching the IOA. Had she kept herself abreast with the intriguing Wrestlers vs Singh saga, she would have understood the reason for the players’ mistrust in the system and past champions.

P T Usha has been such a letdown as IOA chief. A sellout like Mary Kom. No wonder, feku made them RS MPs.

So the cat is out of the bag.

The 4 wrestlers demand direct entry into olympics and don't want to play the nationals.

This episode also proves how shameless and stooges are our current cricketers. Shame on Sachin too.

Hats off to ex cricketers like Kapil, Bhajji, Sehwag, Pathan. Same with Neeraj Chopra. They all stood up for these wrestlers who dared to stand against the dictator feku.

Such gullible creatures will go to any depth just to defend their beloved feku.

Looks like Deepinder Hooda is trying to become the WFI head. And also trying to make this a Jaat vs Rajput issue for the Haryana elections.

These wrestlers don't want to play nationals and want direct olympics entry. Since Brij Bhushan didn't allow it, they now want a more pliable chief.

The wrestlers are

Vinesh Phogat suspended after her antics in Tokyo.

Her sister Sangeeta Phogat.

Sangeeta's husband Bajrang Punia

And Sakshi Malik who lost out in the trials and didn't go to Tokyo.

Interesting thing is that they all also belong to the same akhara.

Why no one else?

From what I know, noone gets a direct entry into Olympic games. There are international events which hand out those berths and wrestlers attend trials to represent the country at those events.

Attending the national championship may not be a certainty for selection for trials but I doubt even then the likes of Vinesh and Punia would struggle to be top 4 in their categories to qualify for trials considering how good they were just last year

The berths are country specific. The federation decides who will represent the country.

Sakshi Malik was beaten in the national trials and missed out on a Tokyo berth.

These wrestlers don't want to attend national trials but want straight selection to olympics. Vinesh Phogat said this openly to the media.

These wrestlers didn't attend the nationals in dec 2022. WFI announced that results of the nationals will be taken into consideration for Asian games selection.

Jan 2023 the wrestlers start protests.

Btw WFI had dissolved the Deepender Hooda led Haryana federation last year.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh defeated Hooda to become WFI president.

Vinesh Phogat has a history of indiscipline. Read about it.

Olympic medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia on Friday alleged that soon after the Delhi police registered two FIRs against BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India President Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, power supply was cut off from the protest site and the wrestlers were told to end their protest by the police.

“I talked to ACP and he told me that do whatever you can, we will not let food or water come inside. They have cut the power and put up barricades. This is the behaviour of Delhi Police,” said the Tokyo olympic bronze medalist during his instagram live. “Police said that if you want to protest, sleep on the road. What kind of pressure has come on them today, there was no such problem before, this has happened only because of the pressure of the Supreme Court,” he said.

Delhi police finally registered two FIRs against Singh on Friday after intervention from the Supreme Court. However, the wrestlers continued their protest claiming that they did not believe in Delhi police and the police might file a loose FIR. Champion wrestler Vinesh Phogat alleged that Singh might try to influence the investigation if he is not removed from all the posts that he currently holds. She also said that the protests will continue until Singh is put behind the bars. Wrestler Satyawart Kadian, husband of Olympian Sakshi Malik, said that the on-paper fight had just begun with the registration of FIR.

Unsurprisingly vindictive from the Modi government.

Shameful silence from Sachin Tendulkar too. Spent the majority of my life idolizing this guy. Have close to zero respect for him as a person now.

2018 she said she has never been harassed.

2021 she is suspended by WFI for indiscipline in Tokyo.

2022 she refuses to attend the nationals. Wants direct entry to olympics.

Jan 2023 she, her sister, and brother in law start protests.

As per visakha guidelines govt forms a committee with the likes of multiple olympic medalists MC Mary Kom, Olympic medalist Yogeshwar Dutt, Multiple Asian and commonwealth games medalist and IOA chief PT Usha, and two others. No wrestler complaints of sexual harassment to the committee.

The protesters now want FIR, move the Supreme court.

FIR filed and case disposed by supreme court.

Now protesters want that Sharan be arrested. For what? Has he been proven guilty?

I doubt he cares.

Even if you don't respect his achievements, they will not disappear.

From the current cricketers, Virat took a big step when he defended Shami during 2021 wt20 when he was being abused due to his religion. Think the higher powers stopped liking Kohli then. There was an article on CI that Kohli did something none of his predecessors had done. Now there's a section of Indian fans that want Kohli out of t20i team as well.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's Charge Against Anurag Thakur Amid #MeToo Protest
Addressing the media, Olympian Vinesh Phogat said, "It is very difficult to stand against a person who is misusing his power and position for so long."

India's ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who has been protesting at Jantar Mantar with other top grapplers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has said it is tough to stand against a powerful person who is misusing his power and position for a very long time.
The wrestlers are protesting over sexual harassment charges against the WFI chief and demanding his arrest.

Addressing the media, Olympian Vinesh Phogat said yesterday, "It is very difficult to stand against a person who is misusing his power and position for so long."

She revealed that the wrestlers had met an official before they started their protest in Jantar Mantar, for the first time. But, no action was taken.

"Three-four months before we sat at Jantar Mantar, we had met an official, we had told him everything that how women athletes are sexually harassed and mentally tortured when no action was taken, then we sat on Dharna," Vinesh added.

Vinesh Phogat also slammed Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur for not taking any action and suppressing the matter by forming a committee.

"We ended our protest after talking to Union Sports Minister (Anurag Thakur), and all the athletes had told him about the sexual harassment. By forming a committee, he tried to suppress the matter there; no action was taken that time," she said.

Wrestler Bajrang Punia addressed the allegations that they are protesting against new rules introduced for the selection for the Olympics.

"He (Brij Bhusan) is saying that we have made some rules for the Olympics and therefore these athletes are protesting; firstly, this is not about the Olympics, this is against sexual harassment. And if I talk about the Olympics rule; the federation will take trails of athletes coming from the Olympics, whoever they want," he said.

Earlier on Saturday, the WFI chief asserted that if he resigns, it would mean that he has accepted the allegations raised by the wrestlers.

Responding to the WFI chief's remark, Vinesh Phogat said all they wanted was justice.

Delhi Police on Friday registered two FIRs against WFI president Singh over allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation of female wrestlers.

The BJP MP said 90 per cent of Haryana players stand with him while only one wrestling family continues to protest at Jantar Mantar.

Earlier on April 26, the wrestlers held a candle march at Jantar Mantar, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to their 'Mann Ki Baat'.

While talking to the media, wrestler Sakshee Malikkh said, "We urge PM Modi to listen to our Mann Ki Baat. Even Smriti Irani ji is not listening to us. We are trying to show them the light through this candle march."

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday hit out at the BJP-ruled central government after wrestlers alleged that the Delhi Police abused and misbehaved with them, saying the “arrogant” Bharatiya Janata Party wants to run the entire system with “hooliganism”. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo called on the citizens to “not only uproot the BJP but drive them out.”

Shocked and appalled by the boorish behaviour of the Delhi Police towards protesting wrestlers late Wednesday evening, an emotionally distraught star wrestler Vinesh Phogat said they were not criminals and did not deserve such disrespect.

"If you want to kill us, then kill us," a crying Vinesh said during a late-night media interaction.

"Did we win medals for the country to see this day? We have not even eaten our food. Does every man have a right to abuse women? These police men are holding guns, they can kill us," an emotionally drained Vinesh said.

"Where were female police officers? How can the male officers push us like that. We are not criminals. We do not deserve such treatment. The police officer who was drunk hit my brother," the World Championship medallist said.

Reacting to the video of Phogat's media interaction, Kejriwal tweeted" Such misbehaviour with the champion players of the country..? This is very sad and shameful…These people (BJP) just want to run the whole system with hooliganism. They have made a mockery of the entire system.”

"I appeal to all the people in the country...no more...do not tolerate BJP's hooliganism, the time has come to uproot the BJP and chase them away," he wrote in Hindi.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal, who arrived at the Jantar Mantar on Thursday morning to extend support to the aggrieved wrestlers, alleged she was not being allowed to enter the protest site.

“Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik told us they were being tortured, and there were police officers who were drunk and misbehaved with them. I am concerned for their safety. Why is Delhi Police protecting Brij Bhushan? Why is Delhi Police not arresting him?” Swati Maliwal said.

So now that supreme court has disposed off their plea, the wrestlers are saying that their caste Khap panchayat are are above the supreme court and high court and they will obey the khaps only.

The casteist and political agenda is out. This after professional protesters were seen at the site.

It cannot get anymore shameful than this. Right to protest is every Indian’s right. If the olympic players who have brought so much accolades to this country get this treatment, then what about common man/women?

Difficult to watch these

I am not declaring that BJP MP guilty but if women are fighting it out risking everything, I am eager to hear their story. And the people in power should have even more responsibility.

These uncivilized brutes ruling us is a sad state of affair. If things continue this way, not much time before the whole BJP gets into bad light of common people

Modi isn’t Manmohan, it’ll take more than a media frenzy to fire Brij Bhushan

The story of the ongoing wrestlers’ protest is one of dull predictability and political surprise. The manner in which the Centre has reacted to the allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh offers us an insight into the way this government thinks. And, as bizarre as this sounds, an example of why Narendra Modi is regarded by his supporters as a strong Prime Minister.

The predictable elements are clearly on display. Seven wrestlers, including a minor, have accused Singh and other coaches of WFI of sexually harassing them over the years.

Brij Bhushan is not a medal-winning champion, unlike many of those who are protesting. He is a Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj constituency. His tenure at the WFI offers another illustration of the cherished Indian sports tradition, which dictates that all sporting bodies should be run by politicians and their families.

Nor is Brij Bhushan a particularly wholesome character. He has four cases pending against him, including for robbery and attempted murder. In the mid-1990s, he spent several months in jail under TADA for allegedly sheltering members of the Dawood Ibrahim gang. Anyone who has seen the video of him slapping a wrestler on stage will have some idea of what he is like.

As ThePrint’s Political Editor DK Singh pointed out recently, Singh was prosecuted in a case of attempt to murder but acquitted after the court pulled up the investigators for making no effort to collect evidence. Brij Bhushan does not pretend to be a man of peace either. He admitted on camera last year, “I have committed one murder in my life. Whatever people may say, I have committed one murder.”

But here’s the surprising thing: why hasn’t Prime Minister Modi intervened? After all, Modi spends a lot of time talking about his commitment to women. In the 100th edition of Mann Ki Baat (broadcast as the wrestlers were protesting), he bragged about his government’s role in empowering women in “our army or the sports world”. He was either unmindful of the irony or wanted to send a message to the wrestlers.

How can a government whose slogans include “Beti Bachao” (save the daughter) continue to back Brij Bhushan Singh? Is it not embarrassed that its critics are now saying that the slogan should be changed to “Beti Ko Hamare Se Bachao” (save the daughters from us)?

The Delhi Police (which reports to the Centre) refused to even file an FIR against Singh until the Supreme Court intervened. The message that goes out is that as far as the political establishment is concerned, the wrestlers are not victims; they are the enemy.

Many explanations have been offered for the government’s attitude toward the wrestlers. Most focus on Brij Bhushan Singh himself. Not only has he won many elections, he is also said to exert influence in several constituencies. This, apparently, is why the BJP, which is busy assuring the women of Karnataka that it will protect them, will do nothing about Brij Bhushan.

This is probably a valid explanation. But I don’t think that this is all there is to it. Modi knows that one reason why all the charges of corruption and impropriety levelled against the UPA stuck was because Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi sacked people at the slightest provocation. All that media had to do was focus on a story and the person allegedly involved in the scandal would immediately be dropped.

The Congress leadership did this out of some naive belief that people would see the government as being committed to the highest standards of governance.

In fact, the sackings had the opposite effect. People believed that the charges were valid: why else would ministers be sacked? The government made the same sort of mistake with street protests. It gave legitimacy to India Against Corruption, which was, in reality, a small, largely Delhi-focussed media phenomenon, by deputing official delegations to talk to Arvind Kejriwal, thereby acting as midwife to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). When Ramdev came to Delhi, it sent six ministers to the airport in the hope of persuading him to call off his agitation.

As it turned out, very few of the corruption charges led to any successful prosecutions — even after the UPA was defeated and the Modi government took over. And often, the charges did not even involve actual corruption. Shashi Tharoor was sacked on the word of Lalit Modi (how is that for irony?). Natwar Singh saw his ministerial career end in ignominy even though nothing was ever proved against him.

Narendra Modi recognises how stupid and foolish this policy was. Not only did it make the UPA look like a government of scams, it also made Manmohan Singh look weak. It encouraged the media to pick on the government regularly and it also encouraged the subversion of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)’s office, which set out to win publicity by making charges that could not be sustained.

All this worked to Modi’s advantage. Faced with this chaos, voters longed for a strong leader who had an image of having no interest in making money for himself.

The Modi government is determined not to make the same mistake — even when the charges are real and not the creation of a publicity-hungry CAG’s office or a part of a media frenzy.

Early in the life of this government when there were charges against Sushma Swaraj, the media, used to their experience with the UPA, waited for her to be sacked. But nothing happened. She survived and the allegations were forgotten. This has been Modi’s strategy: never listen, never explain, and never give in to agitations.

Only rarely does the government bend to public pressure. It finally gave in to the farmer’s agitation because it was worried about the UP election. It sacked MJ Akbar but he was never a Modi favourite. And there are only a few other occasions when it has acceded to public pressure.

But it is always a shrewd cost-benefit analysis, not the self-righteous, knee-jerk reaction that the UPA believed in.

So it is with the wrestlers. If the BJP feels that their protest will influence the Karnataka election (which it hasn’t so far) or seriously affect Modi’s image, it will act.

Otherwise, Brij Bhushan Singh can ride high. And the wrestlers can sob silently into the wind.
