Indian Wrestlers Allege Sexual Harassment

How can Modi ji or BJP alter the weighing scale in Olympics that is going on in Paris? LOL
Look who is back after June 4. :kp

If your Modi Ji can stop wars in other countries, then anything is possible for him. He could most probably also convince cats and dogs to be best friends. 😆 :inti

Its only prove that BJP leaders are behind his disqualification .they can't digest the success

It seems you have no clue about weight cutting for professional sports.

Blaming this on BJP is the stupidest argument one can make.

Weight cutting for professional sports is the most difficult task in any professional sport and can lead to severe health issues.

Many athletes from various sports including boxing, MMA, wrestling, weightlifting have in past been hospitalised due to weight cutting.

The reason why it’s difficult is because every athlete wants to be the biggest in their weight class as it gives them an advantage. So an athlete let’s say is 6 feet height, their normal weight will be 75+ kg however in 75+ kg they won’t have an advantage. However if they cut their weight to less than 68 kg they will have advantage over some other athletes who might not be that height.

Weight cutting requires losing water weight before the fight.

It might be due to incompetence of coaching staff or due to her physical limitations during this fight that she missed the weight but blaming it on a political party is laughable.

This is how shameless andh bhakt is celebrating disqualified of Her .

This is just a normal example .there are thousands of Bhakt who are celebrating it .

And this is exactly the reason why things are so divisive and polarised in India and probably won’t improve in our lifetime.

People have 0 clue about what goes on in sports and chime in with their opinions based on their political affiliations.

One set of people blame the ruling government.

The others mock the athlete or spread lies about partying/drinks before match just because she’s stood up for justice against the ruling government in the past.

People don’t have any empathy left for the struggles and hard work the athlete put in to get to the finals.

Indians fans expect athletes to win medals in sports but do the fans actually deserve the medals?

Standing with the wrestlers against a known criminal.

Unlike most people I don’t have any affiliation or love for any specific politician/political party and have the gall to call a spade a spade.

In this scenario, blaming BJP for missing weight or blaming the athlete for missing weight is both ridiculous and laughable.

You are comparing apples to oranges.

The only thing the criminal and his ilk could have done in this case was to pressurise the athlete to compete in the lower 50kg weight class instead of her usual weight class, before the olympics begun.

Her not making weight before the final has 0 connection with any conspiracy.

It is just a part of an athlete’s struggle.

More than her disqualification, I am celebrating that piddis and chamchas who were showing arrogance, as if they owned the medal and it doesn't belong to anyone else, were left like khisiyani billis.

I am guilty of celebration. Always good to see their arrogance brought crashing down.

I am being respectful.

I haven’t interacted much with @Devadwal before but I have had various interactions with @Bhaag Viru Bhaag and even though we might agree on some points or disagree on others, we still hold mutual respect.

I am just pointing out facts about difficulties of an athletes life and the influence of politics on peoples opinions resulting in divisive and polarisation in mindset at a subconscious level.

Vinish Phogat ousted from Olympic final as her weight gained by 100 gms. India alliance and opposition parties are responsible for it because they provoked these athletes to stage agitation and waisted almost 6 months of their practice. These athletes were innocent, but India alliances used them for their political gain. If vinish used these 6 month on weight management, she could have win gold medal today

I can only speak for myself. I'm bitterly disappointed. I wish I could meet her in person and console her.

This is problem with BJP supporters .they don't know the real situation and what was happened first

Read how were indian athelete were molested and sexuality harassed by Bjp goons ..

If they( Modi) take the action against those who molested them but instead they take action against athletes

Becouse election was around the corner and modi was worried about vote bank more than athletes .

But the FIR was filed in the matter and case was pending before Indian Court. There was no need to stage agitation at the instigation of India alliance leaders. Poor athletes wasn’t know that India alliance using them as pawns for their political gain.

India is not banana republic, facist or monarch to take action on the agitation sponsored by India alliance

Partisan politics has ruined people

Protest is not a scary word , this is normal in any functioning democracy. What was Anna Hazare doing in his demonstrations, protests happened after Nirbhaya case too. Smriti Irani and other BJP MPs were protesting with cylinders to protest price rise. When there is a government you dont agree with at the centre, you will appreciate the value of dissent and protests in democracy

Only thing is that they shouldnt get too violent and transcend into riots and destruction

Agitation for 6 months wasn’t required.. I can 1-2 days agitation was ok, but these athletes were provoked and instigated by opposition parties for their political mileage. Anna Hazare isn’t athlete, he is a socialist having history of uposhan/ agitation. This comparison is useless.

Also vinish is good wrestler, this Olympic isn’t her 1st Olympic she is participating since 2012 and therefore she is very well aware about Olympics rule.

Vinish ouster from Olympics is due to no practice for 6 months during agitation and living with bad company of opposition leaders

Just saw the news on tv. She was overweight by 100 grams. What a failure by the support staff. She needs to take a bit of responsibilty too. Not sure what they are feeding her.

Small margins and all the effort went in vain.

India's Vinesh Phogat announces retirement after Olympics heartbreak

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement from the sport, a day after she was disqualified for failing the weigh-in at the Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old was set to face the US's Sarah Hildebrandt in the finals for the 50kg freestyle category on Wednesday.

A win would have made her the first female athlete from India to win an Olympic gold medal in any event.

But on the morning of the contest, Phogat weighed in a few grams above the 50kg limit and was removed from the draw.

In a heartfelt post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the wrestler said she no longer had the strength to carry on.

"Wrestling won and I lost. My dreams are shattered," she wrote.

"Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all. I am sorry."

A three-time Olympian, Phogat has won three Commonwealth Games golds, two World Championships bronze medals and one Asian Games gold medal.

In 2021, she was also crowned the Asian Champion.

Earlier this week, she became the first female Indian wrestler to reach an Olympic final - a feat which would have guaranteed her at least a silver medal if it wasn't for her disqualification. Sakshi Malik, the only other female wrestler to win an Olympic medal for India, had clinched a bronze at Rio 2016.

Phogat's performance also included one of the biggest upsets at the Games so far, after she beat reigning world champion Yui Susaki from Japan to progress to the quarter-finals.

"Vinesh Phogat is India's biggest, bravest, boldest Olympian. We are lucky to have her," wrote sports writer Sharda Ugra in ESPN after she defeated Susaki.

Phogat had reportedly starved herself for a week and spent hours in the sauna to cut weight for the contest. In the previous two Olympics, she had competed in the 53kg category. This was her first outing in the 50kg category - and the wrestler reportedly struggled to meet the weight requirement during her Olympic qualifiers as well.

Phogat has appealed against her disqualification from the Olympic finals to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), seeking to be awarded a joint silver medal.

This is not the first time Phogat has suffered a setback at the Olympic Games.

At Rio 2016, she had been a favourite for the medal until she dislocated her right knee midway through the quarter-final bout. Pictures of her stretched on the mat and writhing in pain had broken hearts in India.

After Tokyo 2021, the wrestler said she went into near depression amid unfair criticism for her performance after she was knocked out in the second round of the contest.

"I was alone... Everyone outside is treating me like I am a dead thing," she had written in an editorial in the Indian Express newspaper months after the game.

"I don’t know when I will return," she had said.

"Maybe I won’t. I feel I was better off with that broken leg [at Rio 2016]. I had something to correct. Now my body is not broken, but I’m truly broken.”

She did return - "one more shot," as she called it - and went on to win a bronze at the World Championships in 2022.

Phogat, who belongs to a family of international female wrestlers, is also a vocal critic of the sexist attitudes towards women in sports.

Last year, she became the face of a months-long protest by wrestlers against their federation chief Brij Bhushan Singh who was accused of sexually harassing female athletes - a charge he denies.

The row made headlines globally, especially after the police detained Phogat and other wrestlers during a demonstration.

Dramatic images showing her being dragged by officers and being loaded in a police van had caused international outrage.

In 2021, she told BBC Sport how she faced sexist remarks growing up and overcame gender stereotypes to forge a successful career as a professional athlete.

On Thursday, fans said Phogat might be done with wrestling but her legacy and contribution to the sport would live on forever.

Meanwhile, India's run at the Paris Olympics faced another setback after wrestler Antim Panghal was charged with violating disciplinary rules, after she tried to "smuggle" her sister into the Olympic Games Village.

Her sister reportedly used Antim's accreditation to enter the premises but was detained by the police.

Panghal and her entire contingent will now be deported from Paris.

CAS pushes Vinesh Phogat's silver medal case date again; check new time and date

Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has pushed the date for Vinesh Phogat's silver medal case for the third time. The development came minutes before everyone was expecting that they would fially hear the much-awaited verdict on the Indian wrestler's case. Everyone wants to know if Vinesh Phogat will be awarded a silver medal after a heartbreaking disqualification from the Paris Olympics gold medal match. She was 100 grams overweight from the sanctioned limit on the morning of the final which eventually cost her a shot at gold. Earlier CAS extended its decision deadline and said they will announce its ruling on August 13, 2024. However, it will be done on August 16.

Vinesh Phogat's Petition For Silver In Olympics 2024 Dismissed By Court Of Arbitration For Sport

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's petition for joint silver medal in Olympics 2024 has been dismissed by Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The operative part of the order is out, while the detailed order will come later. "The application filed by VInesh Phogat on 7 August 2024 is dismissed," the CAS said in its initial order on Wednesday. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified on the morning of the women's 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit. During the weigh-in, she was found to be 100 grams over the limit.

Following her disqualification, Phogat requested CAS, an international body established in 1984 to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration, on August 7 to award her a joint silver medal.

After the plea was rejected, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment at the decision of the Sole Arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to dismiss wrestler Vinesh Phogat's application against the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

India responds after star Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s medal appeal is rejected

The Indian Olympic Association has expressed “shock and disappointment” after a court dismissed an appeal from star wrestler Vinesh Phogat over her Paris Olympics disqualification.

The star wrestler had filed a plea before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to be considered for a shared silver medal after she was disqualified on the morning of her gold medal fight.

She was slated to lock horns with Sarah Hildebrandt of the US on 7 August in the 50kg weights category, but lost her bid after she was found to be 100g overweight on the morning of the match.

Her appeal at CAS was twice delayed before India’s hopes of a seventh Paris medal were dashed on Wednesday, as the ad-hoc division of the CAS rejected her appeal.

In a strongly-worded statement responding to the decision, the Indian Olympic Association said: "The operative part of the 14 August decision, which dismisses Vinesh’s application to be awarded a shared silver medal women’s 50 kg category at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, has significant implications for her in particular and the sporting community at large."

“The marginal discrepancy of 100 grams” raises serious questions about ambiguous rules and their interpretation, the body said, as it sought a “deeper examination” of the regulations.

Such “inhuman regulations” put undue “physiological and psychological stresses” on athletes, the association claimed, adding: “It is a stark reminder of the need for more equitable and reasonable standards that prioritize athletes’ well-being.”

The Indian sporting body said it was providing ongoing support to Phogat and exploring further legal options, though it was unclear what those might be.
A day after her disqualification last week, Phogat announced that she was retiring from the sport. In a post written in Hindi, she said: “My courage is broken, I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling, 2001-2024.”

Members of the Indian sporting fraternity have come out in support of Phogat, expressing their dismay at the CAS verdict.

"It’s disappointing but we can’t do anything about that," said Indian field hockey player PR Sreejesh, who helped his team win a second consecutive Olympic bronze medal in Paris.

"I believe your medal was snatched away in this darkness. You are shining like a diamond in the whole world today," said fellow wrestler and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, who had joined Phogat last year in long sit-in protests demanding an investigation of sexual harassment allegations against former Indian wrestling federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

National wrestling coach Virendra Dahiya called the CAS decision "unfortunate".

"It is very unfortunate and a jolt for us. We were very hopeful that the decision would be in our favour. But it is unfortunate for Indian wrestling and the country," he said.

"Gain Cheap Popularity": Vinesh Phogat's Husband Blasts Claims Of Rs 16 Crore-Plus Cash Prize After Olympics 2024

From the high of becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to enter an Olympics final to the low of getting disqualified for being 100 gram overweight on the morning of the gold medal bout.

Vinesh Phogat has seen a lot in the last fortnight. From the high of becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to enter an Olympics final to the low of getting disqualified for being 100 gram overweight on the morning of the gold medal bout, Vinesh has seen a lot. Her appeal for a shared silver medal was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) too. The support and adulation for Vinesh has not been short though. From the time she landed in India from Paris, Vinesh has been showered with love wherever she has gone. There have been announcements of cash prize too. However, her husband Somvir Rathee has claimed that few organisations have made the false claims of giving her cash prize of ober Rs 16 crore.

"Vinesh Phogat has not received any money from the following organizations, businessmen, companies and parties. All of you are our well-wishers, please do not spread false news. This will not only harm us but will also harm social values. This is just a means to gain cheap popularity," Rathee wrote in a post on X.

Celebrated wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Saturday received a grand welcome on her return to the country with hundreds of supporters gathering outside the IGI airport, showing immense solidarity with her.

Stars such as Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and panchayat leaders received Vinesh, who endured a heartbreaking exit at the Paris Olympics where she was disqualified for being overweight on the day of her 50kg final.

Heavily garlanded, Vinesh stood in an open Jeep and thanked all the supporters. Congress leader Deepender Hooda accompanied Vinesh and offered her sweets.

"I thank the entire country for support," she said, her hands folded in humility.

There was a thick security cover as Vinesh, who was found 100 grams overweight at the Olympics, landed in the national capital.

Vinesh's caravan left for her native village Balali in Haryana and on the way she met her supporters, positioned at different spots. Hooda presented a mace, a 'symbol of victory' to Vinesh, who got emotional and was consoled by her husband Somvir.

Rules 'Draconian', No illegal Act By Vinesh Phogat: Court of Arbitration for Sport On Olympic Disqualification

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said that it is an athlete's responsibility to stay within the weight limit but also called the consequences of failing the weigh-in on the second day 'draconian' while giving the reasons for rejecting Vinesh Phogat's appeal. Vinesh qualified for the 50kg freestyle gold medal match after victories over Yui Susaki, Oksana Livach and Yusneylys Guzman Lopez but the Indian wrestler was disqualified for being overweight. The United World Wrestling (UWW) rules stated that any wrestler who fails to make weight is completely disqualified and her appeal was also rejected by CAS.

".....the Sole Arbitrator has concluded that the Applicant, of her own free will, entered into the 50 kg wrestling category and well knew that this required her to maintain a weight for competition below 50 kg."

"Article 7 of the Rules provides, relevantly, that each contestant is deemed to be taking part of her own free will and is responsible for herself and is entitled to compete in only one weight category, the one corresponding to her weight at the time of the official weigh-in," the detailed CAS order stated.

"The Applicant is an experienced wrestler who had previously competed under the Rules. There is no evidence to the contrary, or any evidence by the Athlete that she did not understand the weight requirements."

"She voluntarily entered the 50 kg category and, from the evidence, undertook a regime to keep within that weight limit. Her evidence was that she did not have sufficient time to complete a weight loss program, not that she somehow found it interfered with her bodily rights."

"The consequences of the failed second weigh-in, which do not arise from any illegal or wrongful act on the part of the Applicant are, in the opinion of the Sole Arbitrator, draconian."

"A consequence of elimination without ranking from the round for which the Athlete was found ineligible, having been eligible for the rounds for which she competed, would seem to be a fairer solution. "

The gold was claimed by American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.

"Was Seated On His Bed": Sakshi Malik On Sexual Harassment By Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

The 2016 Rio Olympics medallist Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik has unfolded some of the most heartwrenching chapters of her career in her memoir, Witness. Malik, who quit the sport a few months ago, made an explosive claim, alleging former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment. In her autobiography, the wrestler spoke of an incident from the 2012 Asian Junior Championship in Almaty (Kazakhstan) where the then wrestling body chief, Brij Bhushan, tried to harass her in his hotel room sexually.

A report in the Times of India, highlighting excerpts from her book, said that she was sent to Brij Bushan's hotel room on the pretext of speaking to her parents on the phone. But, what happened later became one of the most traumatic incidents of her life.

"Singh connected me to my parents. It seemed harmless. When I spoke to them telling them about my match and my medal, I remember thinking that perhaps nothing unsavoury might happen after all. But right after I ended the call, he tried to molest me while I was seated on his bed. I pushed him off and started to cry."

Sakshi further alleged, "He stepped back after that. I think he realised that I wasn't going to go along with what he wanted. He started saying that he had put his arms around me 'papa jaise' (as a father would). But I knew that was not what it was. I ran out of his room all the way back to mine, weeping."

It isn't the first time that the wrestler had to face such sexual trauma in her life. She narrated another incident from her childhood where one of her tuition teachers touched her inappropriately.

"I had been molested in my childhood too, but for a long time, I could not tell my family about it as I thought it was my fault. My tuition teacher used to harass me. He would call me over to his place for classes at odd times and sometimes tried to touch me. I was scared to go for my tuition classes but I could never tell my mom. This continued for a long time and I kept quiet about it," she wrote in the book. Malik, later, told her mother about this incident.

"My mother supported me not just during the incident with the tuition teacher but also when Singh started pursuing me. I tried to forget about what had happened at Almaty. That's what my parents advised me to do too. They told me to focus on my training and competition. It doesn't seem like much today, but I was grateful that I was allowed to continue to train, at least."
