INDIANA JONES: The Steven Spielberg film was banned in India because of the film's iconic dinner scene and the portrayal of the country's people.

The crux of the film was that Harrison Ford's character stumbled into a primitive village in India whose children had been stolen.

On top of that, the village's ancient relics - the Sankara Stones - had also been stolen, prompting Indy to venture to a nearby palace to figure out the mystery.

During the inspection of the palace Indy and his sidekicks - Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) and Short Round (Jonathan Ke Quan) - found a hidden temple of cultists worshipping the god Kali with human sacrifices.

Details of these aspects of the film led it to be banned in India permanently.

One of my all time favourite movies!

I thought I'd watch this again because the minister Yogi reminds me of the bad guy.

But it seems its banned in India or has this banned now been lifted?

Amrish Puri deserved an Oscar imo, he done an amazing job.

Do Indians find this movie offensive? If so why?

More to do with ' Kali maa shakti de'

No surprise Speilberg felt this was the weakest of all Indian Jone's movies.

Had its moments.

Isnt this 'Goddess' considered master or death, time etc? The bad guy worships her but does it mean she is bad too?

Raiders of the Lost Ark is better but for pure comedy value this is my favourite.

The movie was great. In fact Amrish Puri was so good in that role that he made a career out of playing the socerer, magician, crazy villian kind roles in the 80’s and was super successful.

The only thing offensive about the movie was back in the day, world was so closed up that a lot of westerners mostly Americans took it like a history or cultural lesson on india than an actual fantasy film. I believe even Spielberg was apologetic about that. That would obviously be offensive to anyone on the receiving end.

It’s like saying what was shown in zero dark thirty is offensive to Muslims. If the takeaway from watching the film is calling Muslims terrorists, it is obviously offensive and wrong.

Same logic here.

Now coming to the film being banned not sure anyone is planning on releasing it in theatres in 2022. If it is on streaming service than it should be available everywhere be it India or Africa , basically any place with the internet:

Hope that answers your question.

I read somewhere that it was banned for the scene at the dinner table. Indian people are shown as eating all sorts of weird things:sm The Hindu Goddess Kaali was misrepresented in the film. She is a demon killer in Hindu theology not a demon Goddess. A force of purity not evil, protector of good people. Most of the film was shot in Sri Lanka not India.

Agree Puri was incredible. His brother also a great actor in East is East esp.

Are the references to the Hindu God(s) offensive in any way?

Can you rent it or purchase this legally in India now?

Google Kali ma pictures, shocking. It's more horror than adventure.

Lost Ark and Last Crusader all the way!

"Temple of Doom" was heaps better then boring "The Crystal Skull" for sure,

I am sure if it is available on iTunes etc/ Amazon etc you can buy it anywhere.

not sure going to a video/ dvd rental store or to buy or rent physical copies exists anymore in most parts of the world.

I don’t see Indiana Jones franchise on any streaming service right now from a quick search at least the ones I subscribe to in the US. Maybe some of our Indian friends living in India can answer.

Yeah misrepresenting any religious figure is offensive to the faithful. I don't think Spielberg would be too chuffed if Bollywood mocked the Jews. He should have done some research on the Hindu faith before generalizing on Kaali or expressing his opinion.

If Congress banned the film in 1984 when it was released then I don't think the RSS would find it any less offensive today that they would allow for it to be aired anywhere. I agree that "Crusade" is brilliant.

Worst Indiana Jones movie

Raiders, Last Crusade were the best

Fun fact, Kate Capshaw who plays Indy’s love interest in Temple of Doom met Steven Spielberg on the set of the film and the two instantly hit it off in a big way, which eventually led to her marrying the great director and becoming the retired actress Kate Spielberg — they have 7 kids!

The 'Goddess' Kali does look dark. Was she represented in a more negative way than she is supposed to be?

Possibly, he has always cried over racism as a child.

Didn’t I already answer that the problem with the movie was not it’s over the top and stereotypical portrayal of India, it was most Americans took that as a history lesson. So I would take whatever was said in the movie for what it is.

Now shouldn’t that answer your question to not look at the film like a history or a cultural lesson.

Not sure what exactly your point is. Your question has been already answered.

Om Puri wasnt related to Amrish Puri

Amrish tho did have a brother the late madan puri who appeared in films in the 60s-80s

Of course movies are not always accurate.

Im interested in the Goddess Kali - Is she a Goddess of Good or Evil?

Ok, thanks for this. :)

...and she even converted to Judaism too! Spielberg is very sensitive about his Jewish background and faith bombarding viewers with so many films that have some Jewish angle. He could do a lot worse then educate himself on other religions and it's peoples sensitives. Among the Hindu faithful Kaali has million's of devotee's. They are not evil people.

This thread is about the movie - leave it about that.

Till a few years ago, the Indian censor board was comprised of the most uptight and **** people in the world. They banned everything that offended their paper thin sensibilities.

A film like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom would have never made it past.

Do you know that there once was a ban on Bollywood music on All India Radio? I kid you not. Indians would have to tune in to Radio Ceylon to hear their own country's songs.

I was alluding to the movie but yes , not here to discuss Hindu theogly esp if it may come across offensive.

What was the reason for Bollywood ban?

Imo if the filmakers use false narrative against a what is considered a holy deity , its understandable there is a ban in a very religous nation.

I don't think the movie aged that well. At the time it was entertaining enough because it was so weird, but on watching it again much later, most of the Indians seemed like cartoon characters. I can see why KKWC might have enjoyed it.

Goddess Kali is the destroyer of evil as per Hindu mythology

In India soldiers invoke Kali before going to war. " Joy Ma Kali " is the war cry of Gurkha regiments in Indian Army / British army

Diwali is the festival of lights in North & West India

But in Eastern India ( Bengal / Assam / Odisha ) - on that day people worship Goddess Kali to ward of evil
