Indo-Canadians rally against gang violence in Calgary

Hundreds of Calgarians gathered at Nelson Mandela High School on Sunday, voicing their concerns about a perceived rise in drug trafficking and gang violence in the Indo-Canadian community.

Since April, four men from that community have been killed in three different attacks.

In April, 25-year-old Jasdeep Singh and 22-year-old Japneet Malhi were shot and killed outside a restaurant in the northwest community of Balmoral.

Bikramjit Dhindsa, 49, was found dead in his Hamptons home on Sunday, May 12.

Two days later, 23-year-old Rishabh Saini was killed in Taradale. He was found suffering from a gunshot wound in a car that had crashed into a parked vehicle.

Calgary police say the victims all appear to be targeted, and officers have been looking into possible connections between the homicides.

“These are three homicides that have occurred within the Indo-Canadian community here in Calgary,” Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm said. “We would be remiss if we weren’t looking at the possibility that they were linked.”

Harcharan Parhar with Sikh Versa International said the Punjabi community is concerned about the latest string of attacks.

He said parents in Calgary’s northeast are worried that their kids are getting exposed to gang activity at an early age.

Parhar added that he thinks not enough is being done from a police perspective.

“Everybody knows drugs are [being sold] over there,” said Parhar. “We never see the police handle the situation.”

Community leaders are also waiting for arrests to be made in connection to the four homicides, saying they feel there has been a lack of communication between the community and authorities.

“We feel there are so many deaths happening and police never arrest any persons,” said Parhar. “Maybe they’re doing something behind the scenes but we are not seeing results.”

Sunday’s march ended at the Saddletowne police station, where a memorandum was handed to a member of the Calgary police.

The message: more needs to be done to stop teens from getting involved in drugs and gangs.

Parhar said his community will continue to do their own community outreach programs, working to educate students about the dangers of gang life.

Heard about it in the news. Northeast Calgary is exactly how Brampton/Malton was in the GTA when I was growing up. Infact lots of prallel to NE Calgary and Burnaby as well.

The unfortunate part is that the City of Calgary has NE in its low priorities, maybe because of its multiculturalism. In the last 10 years I have seen situation and area go from bad to worse. It has a lot of potential and city needs to invent in it and take care of this area. This has the capability of becoming a real estate cash cow like Mississauga is in the GTA.

Again, unfortunate events going on. Also, Hamptons is a fantastic community in NW. Shocked to hear somethin like that happened there.

And it's only going to get worse. Their population is going to rise to about 1.5 billion within the year 2050 with no end or control in site.

As far as I'm concerned, they created their bed, they should have to lie in it. They shouldnt be allowed to immigrate their way out of the problem and create a global sausagefest for other countries. Because it is mostly their men who immigrate due to a skewed gender ratio.

Their parents and governments gave zero ****s about trying to build a prosperous country and infrastructure for their progeny to thrive in so they wouldn't have to leave.

The Chinese are the same, but to a lesser extent. And at least they have tried to do something to get their population growth under control. They don't believe they can dump their excess humanity onto other countries.

Tamils in Canada are almost entirely from Sri Lanka, most of whom migrated during civil war. And when I saw majority, I mean like over 95% of the Tamils are Sri Lankan and that is a conservative estimate, should be more like 99%. They do have a problem with gang violence. Unless you start believing that Muralitharan, Angelo Mathews, Arnold etc are Indians, you can't lump the Canadian Tamils with us.

You’re right. There’s this Dravidian thing that unites all Tamils. It’s nothing but inferiority complex. ‘Tamil Eelam’ concept of Sri Lankan Tamils still have support of many Tamils outside Sri Lanka. They will never accept any of this.

I have read jewel's posts and from his language it is quite clear he is British born so ethnicity will be secondary. He is reflecting the current British mood against immigrants flooding into western countries and upsetting the indigenous local culture. This is nothing more than true integration and I for one will echo his sentiments. India is no country torn by war, and in fact is a rising superpower, so there should be no reason for Indians to emigrate.

Are Pakistanis integrating well into Western countries? Should we not ask an Indian British person if he has a problem with too many Pakistani Brits then?
Just because someone types like a local doesn't mean they've integrated.
People emigrate for many reasons, war is not the only reason, so saying that Indians shouldn't immigrate because India is not wartorn is asinine.

Precisely. As you can see on that video, there is a large section of English society which doesn't want more foreign culture disturbing the local landscape. How many Indian faces can you see in that crowd? Any ideas why none of the well integrated Indians are taking part?

Indians in UK (2011) - 1451,000

India's population (2017) - 1339 Million
Bangladesh's Population (2017) - 165 Million

India's population is 8x Bangladesh's, but Indians are just 3x in UK.

There are only 433,000 Chinese in UK, less than Bangladeshi's despite having 8 times more total population.

Question about Calgary

I have some questions for people living in Alberta.

I am planning to purchase a townhouse/apartment in Calgary and move there. My reason is too much property cost in Ontario. In Calgary, I can afford to make out right purchase after selling some property back home.

First , question is is it better to move there straightaway or give the property on rent and move there after a couple of years.

Second, some years back I had an accident, so I stopped driving. So, I would like to know, how is public transport in Calgary currently?
