Former cricketer Inzamamul Haq has accused the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of causing rift within the Pakistan team by floating the idea of appointing a new Test captain.

Earlier this week, PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said that team management under the supervision of head coach Misbahul Haq will review Azhar Ali’s captaincy before announcing the Test squad against New Zealand.

Inzamam, while speaking on his YouTube channel, said that PCB Chief Executive should have waited till the conclusion of Zimbabwe series to make the aforementioned statement.

"There is a new debate going on regarding Pakistan’s Test captaincy after PCB Chief Executive [Wasim Khan] said that they will review Azhar Ali’s captaincy before announcing the Test squad for New Zealand tour. Such statements can cause rift in the team. Any player who is in contention will start to lobby for himself and that disturbs the team environment. If you wanted to change the captain, you should have announced the change after the Zimbabwe series," said Inzamam.

"These gossips in the media regarding the change in captaincy are not required. Sometimes the board themselves leak such information in the media inorder to gauge the reaction from the media and fans. Board may get an idea about the public sentiment from doing this, but it negatively affects the team. This also disrupts the confidence and unity in the team," he added.

It must be noted that Ali replaced wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed as the skipper in October last year but his meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan, regarding changes in Pakistan’s domestic structure, could be one of the reasons why the PCB is keen on removing him from the role. Azhar had met PM Imran along with head coach Misbhaul Haq and veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, without informing the PCB, which did not go down well with the board’s top brass.

Lobby parades where started by himself Inzi, so he is thinking on his own ideas of the past I guess.

On the contrary inzy Its good to make ensure azhar doesnt get complacent

If hes not gonna score runs, not win games n if hes gonna back his mates like shafq blindly when they dont deserve it then he needs to know there will be consequences to these actions

Wasn't it leaked out during last days of azhar's ODI captaincy tenure that he was going to be replaced that was coincidentally Inzi's tenure as CS. The thing about leaking the info deliberately to measure public's sentiment is a pretty poor tactic though.

Not sure if it really will cause a rift as Azhar will be out of the side completely if removed from the cuptaany.

One hopes Asad Technique follows with him.

He is not talking just about Azhar, though that is one of his points. He also said that if you’re going to remove someone, just appoint the next person immediately.

Instead, the PCB has essentially left it open to public discussion which Inzi argues will make all 3 of Shan, Rizwan, and Babar (and Shadab in limited overs) interested in the captaincy. When one is appointed, the other two will feel they should have gotten it and lead to some mild tension between them.

Inzi is speaking based on his experiences in the 90s — a little bit of an over reaction but if is grounded in truth nonetheless. Why leave it open to public debate for so long? It divides fans and it divides the team. If Babar fails as captain, Shan’s fans will start arguing in his favor and ditto for Rizwan. How does this affect the team’s morale and team dynamics?

Atleast things like grouping and player politics have been curbed to a lot lesser degree after the Oathgate fiasco and subsequent bans. We suffered almost 2 decades due to that mentality.
I do hope such reports are not leaked or not made public unless new appointments have been made already.

If there's one thing that's good about this "achay bachay XI", it is that they won't start rifts within a team. Azhar Ali is the last guy I'd think of when it comes to creating controversies and rifts.

That said, I do agree that it serves no purpose to leak such news to media before an official announcement.

Inzamam still thinks the Pakistan team is the one from the 90s.

Either that, or he's following the ploy to get a role at the PCB like others around him.

He is not talking about Azhar Ali but other young players who are in race of captaincy. If no clear message is given, all players will get ambitious and will try to put down others

To be honest it's not the right time to captain Pak esp in tests...with an inexperience attack and 2 good batters.....it's a risk which could end careers of Shan ...Rizwan

so is inzi worried that this rift will cause pakistan to lose focus and may loose a match or two against Zimbabwe?
Interesting

There arent any major egos in the team like their was in the 90s -00s during inzys time

I can see shafiq making a move to guarantee his place after all the criticism thats come his way recently

But not the likes of babar rizwan masood etc lobbying for captaincy Theyve got decent heads on their shoulders n not big on egos Their focus seems to be on improving their game and contributing towards the team than serving themselves like inzys bunch were
