I am looking for a new mobile with the usual facilities like Whats app, Skype and Camera. It is not really my subject so struggling to decide which one I should purchase. I don't really know the difference between a I or Smart phone, someone explain!!:rabada2 Any advice would be appreciated.

Buy any Samsung phone. It's like a mini computer. Too many obstacles with iPhones.

Is the one you are recommending an I or Smart phone? Does it have all the facilities I have stated?

I phone is the smartest phone

I phone is the smartest phone
And you pay an additional hefty price tag, over and above its direct like-for-like competitors models, just for having the Apple logo.

iPhone does not classify under smartphone. It is a pretty dumb phone. Heck its 2019 and you can't run two apps at the same time on it. Android phones have had that for a good 5 years.

Not to forget no fast charge

Apple also used to have the best camera but now it's been blown away by the Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy Note

Whats an Android phone?

Iphone costs more coz of Apple logo? How much more? What is the cheapest and best phone for my requirements pf whats app, video chat, camera etc?

samsung is not even on the same level as iphone, they might be abit more expensive but its worth it, its not like samsung is cheap anyway and iphones last for years, samsungs are disposable, they start lagging after a few months and become extrmly slow after a year.

What's your budget for it ? From where you are gonna buy it?

Your needs are basic so both the phones suits you. IPhones runs Apple's ios operating system and is made by apple only compared to that android phones runs on google's Android operating system and made by various companies such as Samsung , LG , sony , motorola , oppo , vivo etc. So you have plenty of choices in android smartphone category - you can go for value for money products or premium products.

IPhone lacks some killer features like fast charging , memory expanding ability, plenty of restrictions in other areas like file management, also lack of 3.5 mm audio jack ( for using earphones & audio peripherals) , still stuck on Apple's property lighting connector for charging instead of embracing industry standard usb tybe c connectors.

Since your needs are basic I would advise to go for value for money android phone Instead of buying overpriced apple phone which doesn't worth it's price tag in my opinion.

Seriously bro; not to be rude but have you been living under a rock? This is basic stuff. As in, an iPhone is a smart phone :s

Get an Android phone, I would endorse a Samsung. Better tech then the IPhone and significantly cheaper.

Smart phone is just a generic term for a phone that has many functions that a computer would have essentially (i.e applications, internet browsing, email, etc...).

An Iphone is a smart phone. The term iphone just means it is manufactured by Apple and runs Apple's operating system on it.

Other popular smart phones are called android phones, which run on an operating system called android. These phones are manufactured by a lot of companies including Samsung, LG, Huawei, etc...

The mechanics of iphones and android phones are essentially the same.

If you want to keep things streamlined and basic, go for the iphone. I find people that are not so tech savvy love iphones.

Those who are more tech savvy and like customization, may choose to go with android phones.

I hope that explains things to you, even though this seems like a troll thread as even 70 year olds have smart phones these days.

iPhones will last 4 years, samsun gwill become slow in a year. Pay now more and enjopy 4 years or pay less now and chnage phones every year

Got my first iPhone a couple of weeks ago, iPhone XS Max 64 GB. Excellent phone, no complaints. But honestly speaking, it's simply not worth it in India or Pakistan considering the price. People in those 2 countries should rather opt for Galaxy Note 9 if they want a premium flagship smartphone.

One thing that definitely goes in favor of iPhones are their OS updates. Android flagships provide just 2 updates, and you would get those updates a few months after Google releases those new Android versions.

Apple released iOS 12 in September of last year, and it supports even iPhone 5s which was released in 2013. That's 5 years back, and it's simply insane.

Not by Galaxy Note. Not like iPhone XS/XS Max's camera is vastly superior, in fact it's just marginally superior than Note 9's camera. Google Pixel 2's camera which was released in 2017 was marginally better than iPhone X's camera.

Last year's Pixel 3's camera was however rated 101 marks by DXOMark while iPhone XS Max's camera was rated 104.

Fast charging has been available in all models since iPhone 8. Although the fast charging brick isn't supplied in the box.

Not true, had my Samsung 7 Edge since it came out about 3 years ago and it's still lightning fast. Might have been true of the older models. In fact I wish it would slow down, I'm looking for an excuse to buy a new phone, I'm bored with this one, but frustratingly it still works like new.

I like the face recognition feature which the iphone brought out, not sure if any Android models have that yet. Otherwise all these phones do pretty much the same thing, and nowadays look the same as well.

If one wants to get value for price, iPhone has the worst. Especially for third world countries.

One plus 6t currently will be the best among price, features and reliability.

If you just want a phone for browsing, little bit of gaming etc. Then xiaomi, asus and hwaei will be the best among $200 category.

Motorola is perhaps the most under powered phone in this segment.

Apple already admitted of slowing down their device intentionally with their updates.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/28...e-battery-replacement-price-slow-down-apology

They faced lawsuit regarding intentionally slowing down and had to compensate consumers.

Don't be a blind fan boy.

I think this issue has been overblown, and I have noticed that non-iPhone users have made a bigger deal about than iPhone users.

I used the iPhone 6 for four years and updated the software immediately after every release. I didn't experience any dip in performance, and neither did anyone in my family who all used the same model for years. I upgraded to the iPhone X not because my old phone was giving me problems, but because I wanted to.

Regardless of Apple's evil intentions, any iPhone model is more than good enough for 3-4 years. Yes the performance of the battery deteriorates, but that is how they work - no battery will give you the same performance after a few years.

The iPhone, and Apple products in general, have become status symbols and that is why Apple charge the additional hefty price tag. Whether it is the right thing to do or not is a different debate, but they deserve credit for establishing the premium brand image in the minds of the consumer. They must have done something right to be where they are today.

Other brands have tried hard but have failed to displace Apple as a status symbol, and it is highly unlikely to change in the future.

Agreed,I do not know mush of technical things but I think I am enjoying iphone more even battery goes down after an year or so.

As an android user, the main issue I believe is the price (where people does take a shot at Apple). The chip of iPhone is one of the fastest and even snapdragon 845 will lose against it. But most people wont be using that much of resource extensive application anyway. So value for money comes in. Especially in third world countries where an iPhone may cross even 100000 INR. where as in just 35k, you can buy one plus which will be more than enough for most people.

Hence, if a beginner user will ask, what's the smart phone to buy, I'll simply ask to avoid iPhone. Specially when most people in the third world countries won't earn more than 50k per month.

My colleague bought an iPhone taking a loan from a bank. But when it comes to transfer a file, she will send me first in mail, and then ask me to copy it to her usb drive from my phone. Ofcourse in iPhone you can directly copy. But she's so much used to android that she finds it hard to adapt. I still scold her to this day.

It shows how much people are trying hard to maintain a "status". With the premium price, Apple brought the notion of "standard of living". With insecure people in desi society, it does more harm than good.

sorry mate it is true, samsung fans always say that, but when they switch from samsung to iphone its like going from the atari to the pc, the difference is night and day.

I have had many samsungs, htc, sony ericsons etc. they dont last more than 5 months before they start slowing down, i gave my iphone 5 to my cosin in pak years ago and its still running like its new, that is the different between iphone and samsung or any other phone.

Samsung, except the flagship, rest are useless. It has worst devices to develop custom roms and optimization is horrible.

Xiaomi last year crossed Samsung in India dethroning it.

If you want best Android experience, people should always go for Android one phones. And if you are a bit tech savy, install AOSP (android open source project) roms. You will be surprised to see the speed in the same handset.

Loan to get an iPhone?

My goodness.

Whats the OP's budget? Are you going for used or brand new?

If you just use those apps then you can use any android phone in your budget but check the reviews first. I buy iphones as my family uses this brand and it is easy looking for chargers in the home and car.

Also I personally feel their warranty is quite good in the UK.

Would recommend going for iPhone. Android users around me always seem to be facing some or the other issue with their phones.

I purchased an iPhone 4s in 2012 and it still works decently. Right now I'm using an iPhone 6 that I purchased in late-2014 and it still works well. I got the battery replaced under the scheme though.

That's like someone saying I still drive a 98 Corolla but I just had the engine replaced, no biggie :yk

For starters the "Android users" around you could be anyone from a $1000 Samsung or Google phone to a $100-200 Xiaomi phone, so it is unfair to clump all Androids together.

I have Google Pixel 2XL, had it 1.5 years and absolutely zero issues so far. Best phone I ever had. Although the lack of headphone jack does get annoying.

True. Apple must be commended. I am a huge fan of companies that can brand & market well.

But there comes a point when you can't market your way out of every obstacle.

8 years back, people would laugh if anyone called Samsung or any other model as a serious competior to Apple. At that time, people would argue as to how Apple was a fundamentally better phone (let alone a status symbol).

Now the game has changed. Now very few argue about Apple being a fundamentally better phone. The arguments are all all about durability (which other models are catching up) and status symbol (which other models quite haven't but opinions are slowly changing).

Apple has to pull up their socks or things are going to be very different in 10 years. Or maybe 15.

----

Now Mac laptops are a totally different thing. Their quality and durability makes them the best choice for most people. It may not be a hot product anymore but it's going to take a LONGGGG time before Mac is dethroned by its opponents (not talking about market share here but you get the point).

The new Huawei smartphones are very very good. The Mate 20 Pro for example is a phenomenal handset.

Which phones have the best camera?

Can anyone list them out in order?

At the moment it’s probably:

1. Huawei Mate 20 Pro;
2. Google Pixel 3;
3. Samsung Galaxy Note 9;
4. iPhone XS;
5. Samsung Galaxy S9.

However there’s not much between them - they are all really good - and unless you are very keen photographer you probably won’t notice the difference.

If you are an avid gamer like me and spend a few hours gaming everyday even on mobile, an iPhone will perform much better than any android phone out there. If you are in the uk you can try out the latest iPhone with the latest android for a months trial and the difference in quality is clearly palpable

I have actually when it comes it such things. Such things have never been my forte! As it happens purchased a Galaxy Samsung today:sarf2

recently got a deal of Samsung Galaxy S9 brand new for 210$ (price was 360$ but got a 150$ gift card from Walmart)

At the moment it’s probably:

1. Huawei Mate 20 Pro;
2. Google Pixel 3;
3. Samsung Galaxy Note 9;
4. iPhone XS;
5. Samsung Galaxy S9.

Thanks a lot man.

How is the camera on One Plus phones?

Thanks a lot man.

How is the camera on One Plus phones?

I used one plus 5. Good camera.

If you want the best performance, look for gcam flash file in xda forums for the respective device. You will be surprised at the details of stock camera and gcam. Especially in low light. If you want good pictures, gcam is definitely a must. It's a bit hard to install and make it work though.

Apple products are only 'elite' and 'premium' in certain parts of the world. In most of the others it is regarded as quite mainstream and bought by anyone regardless of their fiduciary situation. It is similar to Bose in that sense though pound for pound i would consider Bose products to be superior to Apple.

It is not about whether it is mainstream or not. Regardless of where you live, you can always buy a smartphone with the same features (or better) as the iPhone for a lower price, but yet people still buy iPhones.

The biggest reason is the exclusivity that Apple emphasises on. If you want to use the iOS, you have to buy the iPhone, and since every iPhone has a premium feel in terms of its finish and form factor, and because of the stability and fluidity of the iOS (which matter more to the average user, i.e. the majority, than specs), they have been able to position itself as a luxury brand within the the smartphone universe.

They have not compromised on quality by selling their software to every Tom, Dick & Harry, allowing even the low quality, laggy phones worth 5k to run Android.

It is not a question of right or wrong, but rather a case of two distinct business strategies. Google's strategy of diluting Android has given them a market share of over 80%, but the downside has been that their flagship phone is nowhere near as prominent as the iPhone simply because Android users are flooded with options.

Furthermore, you might get a bad impression of Android if you use it on a cheap phone, but that is never a risk with Apple because all of their phones are of pristine quality.

Apple's strategy has resulted in a premium brand image and intense brand loyalty compromising of users who value the exclusivity, but the downside of course has been the low market share.

If you don't care about camera then this 160euros ( Xiaomi A2 Lite https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_a2_lite_(redmi_6_pro)-9247.php ) smartphone is better than all these 900euros iphones/samsungs combined. Clean latest android, good battery and quality/price advantage.

My bro has this and it works like a charm. Camera is good outdoors.

This is my current handset. In india it is known as redmi 6 pro. Camera isn't good but rest, awesome.

With 4000 mah battery, this one goes for two days even after heavy use. And it has two sim + dedicated SD.

Just head online, zero in on a device for INR 15,000 (convert to currency of your choice), purchase that, use it for 12 - 18 months, rinse and repeat.

For people's info.... the latest iPhone has been one of the worst performing in Apple's history, the company's revenues are severely down. Tim Cook, Apple CEO, told investors at the start of the year (or late last year) that Apple will more than likely miss revenue targets this year. Apple stock is down from its peak of around $230 in October 2018 to $150 now. At this time last year Apple stock was at $180, quite a drop!

I guess the sheeple are waking up.

Using iphone XR for 2 months , its just a decent phone at best . Battery lasts for long , good camera ...thats about it .

you can filter it further to Huawei phones , mostly in 8-12K range . Real value for money phones

I'm not a Samsung fan, I've only ever had one, and it's 3 yrs old now and running fine. I'm assuming the slowdown issues you are talking about are with older models, and iphones from back then had the same, they weren't designed to handle the newer versions of the OS which get released periodically. iphones have definitely been superior for a long time, but there's not that much difference these days, even their designs have started looking very similar to other brands, once they had a very distinctive look.Smartphones are all pretty generic these days, only fans of a particular brand will tend to insist that their model is the only one which can ever be best for ever and ever.

That is what the XR is intended to be, just a decent phone, aimed at people who want more color options and the Face ID. It is basically a redesigned iPhone 8/8 Plus.

You should have opted for the X.

There is a logical reason for it. The iPhone XS is not an upgrade on the X except for the camera, so most people who already have the X did not have any reason to upgrade unless they take a lot of pictures.

Similarly, people who had the previous models have opted to update to the X rather than the XS, because the superior camera is not a big enough factor for the jump in price.

Next year is not going to be much different either, because according to reports, they are set for a big release in 2020, much like the iPhone X in 2017.

Apple at the moment is going through the same transition it did during 2014-2016, where they made minimal changes since they were setting up for the iPhone X release.

It’s not about Apple users moving on (or sheeple if you like) to other brands; it is simply not the right year to upgrade to the latest model.

Well said bro! And if (Godforbid :yk) the screen breaks or something then you can always buy a new one, can't do that with an iphone/samsung/insert overpriced brand.

Instead of using stock camera app, download a different one (more than 1m downloads and 4.5+ rating). It will improve photos' quality.

PS: did you check the Redmi pro 7?

Apple is shamelessly greedy, there is no doubt about it.

IBM effectively created the PC / Laptop world as it is today (yes other brands/models existed prior to the arrival of the IBM PC, but it was the letters I.B.M. emblazoned on it which made the corporate world opt for it even though it was more expensive, and not as powerful, than what was already established on the market at the time). Now it doesn't even exist as a PC/Laptop brand name. IBM sold it's PC business to Lenovo over a decade ago.

As for IBM itself, at one time it was more than 3 times the size of all the other IT related companies in the entire world put together. And now? Other than those working on large scale corporate mainframe systems, there's not many who've even seen a current model IBM computer. And how often is IBM spoken of in discussions about the largest technology companies around?

In the world of technology, 'status symbols' rise and fall with regularity. Buyers buying Apple products are paying a premium for the Apple logo just as the corporate world used to do for the letters I.B.M.

Anyone paying hefty smart phone price tags just to have a slightly 'better' camera would be far better off buying a mid-range phone and buying a decent camera with the money saved.

Apple is shamelessly greedy, there is no doubt about it.

I dislike Apple, their brand, their phones, their constant misuse of the trust of their loyal fanbase, but BUT, I have invested a big chunk of my money with them :ashwin

It's not my fault they are making money by making fool out of people, I just want a tiny share of the pie. :afridi

Honor v20 with 48 MP camera trumps all. It is going to be launched in USA in a few days.

Moto g6 play and one plus 6t are also quite good.

No need to spend money on iPhone or Samsung. They are just not worth the price.

You're proving my argument. It can be picked up by anyone and it is in the developed world. No one over there considers apple anywhere close to a 'lifestyle' brand because it is in the main quite a mainstream device. This started not with the iphone but with the iPod, most erstwhile users who were loyal to it despite the fact that there were cheaper and arguably better mp3 players still swore by it and shifted to the iphone in 2007. I wouldn't quite call apple the bmw or mercedes of smartphones if you could even make that analogy because of how similar the parts sourcing for all the ecosystems are and that frankly, the build quality of even cheaper android smartphones has really.improved recently. The current iphone iterations even look a lot like many of the Chinese phones for crying out loud to even speak of premium feel.and build.quality.

Which smartphone is the best in terms of taking photos/videos?

Just keep in mind if you go with android, you cant use the phone and charge the phone at the same time. While with Iphone you can.. I might trigger all the samsung users but thats just how it is

Not sure that's right, I have never come across it. Maybe because I very rarely need to charge the phone, I just drop it onto the wireless charger every night and it's good for a full day's use the next day.

Incidentally, does iphone have anything similar to swype technology for text input? I will probably be upgrading at some point, but I don't think I could go back to tapping out every message.

Just head online, zero in on a device for INR 15,000 (convert to currency of your choice), purchase that, use it for 12 - 18 months, rinse and repeat.

Nailed it.

The gap between a budget phone and a premium phone today is as thin as its ever been. In short, an INR 15k phone in 2019 is the same phone you probably paid INR 60K 2 years ago.

Let's be honest. Who are we trying to fool? Throwing all that hard earned cash on a premium phone in 2019 only goes to show how insecure a lot of us really are that we wan't to be recognized by the phone we own when a budget phone pretty much covers everything we really need.

Yes, the top of the line iPhones, Mate Pros, Galaxies, Pixels etc are all amazing devices but in an industry that's outdoing itself month by month.

If that money is really worth something to you there are better ways to spend it.

Bro try it yourself. Lets say if you're playing a game on your android phone, while charging, the battery goes down not up because the software is stronger than the battery charging. It gets really frustrating. This is a well known issue.

You do realize that what you talked here isn't an android issue but that of a charger which isn't capable of fast charging? Or unable to provide the mobile with high amp current?

Which models? Can you mention them?

I used one plus 5. Good camera.

If you want the best performance, look for gcam flash file in xda forums for the respective device. You will be surprised at the details of stock camera and gcam. Especially in low light. If you want good pictures, gcam is definitely a must. It's a bit hard to install and make it work though.

Thanks a ton guys.

I have the cheapest phone in my family.

Redmi Note 3.

I love it.

But camera sucks. :(

Photos and videos create memories that last a lifetime and a budget phone gives a crappy/so-so experience reg that which is why I am thinking of buying a mid tier or high end phone.

Moreover, if you are going to buy a phone every year, it would cost the same as iPhone or Samsung (high end) over a 5 year period.

Tho, I must say my Redmi is working well for 3 years now (just have to change battery every 1.5 years).
