What is it?

The Indian Premier League is the world's biggest - and brashest - domestic cricket tournament, attracting the best players from every top-tier cricket-playing nation.

This weekend, 578 players - including 25 from England and 361 from India - will enter the 11th IPL auction. The salary cap is up by 20 per cent this year and all bar the 18 players already retained by their franchises are available for 182 remaining slots.

In the Ritz-Carlton Hotel auction room in Bangalore, each of the eight sides must choose how to spend what remains of their 80 crore budget - about £9 million - on a minimum of 18, or maximum 25, players (eight overseas, with only four allowed in any match-day XI).

When is it?

Over this weekend, January 27-28. It starts on Saturday at 4am GMT.

What TV channel is it on?

Unfortunately, it's not on any British TV channels. However, if you have access to India's Star Network you're laughing. The TV channels broadcasting the auction live are Star Sports 1, Star Sports 1 Hindi, Star Sports 1 Tamil, Star Sports 1 HD, Star Sports 1 Hindi HD, Star Sports First.

How does it work?

The burden of building a team falls on five or six decision-makers - typically the chairman, chief executive, head and assistant coaches, team manager and analyst - who sit around their franchise table and bid for players.

The big marquee names will be up first, starting with India's Ravi Ashwin. The bidding will be fast and furious and players have set a base price from which the bidding starts.

This year, the process is complicated further by the right-to-match system, allowing each team to match the auction price of between two and four players they had previously owned (depending on how many players they already retained). If a team knows that another side is desperate to retain a particular player, they might be inclined to pay more for them during the auction, hoping the other side then use their right-to-match cards.

Teams have been planning for this moment for eight months, since the end of the last IPL. They even conduct mock auctions to hone their techniques during the day, and map where they think players will end up in each round of the auction.

Agree except for yuvraj.
Rahane, ashwin, dhawan, chahal will fetch bigger deal than yuvraj in my opinion.

Yuvraj, harbhajan are fading forces now. They are still popular among fans but teams will look at them as a utility players not as first pick star players.

Will be keeping an eye on it. Can mods let us know where IPL will be broadcasted in the UK?

I think the IPL will be shown on Sky Sports? I'm not sure if you meant to ask about this draft or the whole IPL though. I don't think the draft will be shown anywhere but I may be wrong.

No not the draft. The actual cricket where can we watch that? Sky sports have a show about the draft but I haven't heard that they are broadcasting the IPL.

I'm pretty sure sky sports have the rights. They have for a few years. Not 100% sure if they are showing it this year but I think they should be.

They had the rights till 2017. If you find out please let me know. I hope it isn't on BT sport.

One lakh rupees, 100,000, is worth about $2000. One crore rupees, 10 million, is worth roughly $200,000. Normally such information would be useful mainly to tourists. This afternoon it will be at the forefront of the minds of cricketers round the world.

The 11th Indian Premier League auction, occurring over the next two days at Bengaluru’s five-star Ritz-Carlton Hotel, will feature more lakhs and crores than ever: salary caps have been swollen by a fifth to $16 million per franchise, and there are more Australians, 55, out of 578 players

With teams set to to undergo complete revamp, this auction promises to be the biggest so far as the biggest cricketing stars from around the world will go under the hammer.

Here's a list of the players retained by the franchises so far: Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (Rs 15 cr), Hardik Pandya (Rs 11 cr), Jasprit Bumrah (Rs 7 cr) Kolkata Knight Riders: Sunil Narine (Rs 8 cr), Andre Russell (Rs 7 cr) Delhi Daredevils: Rishabh Pant (Rs 8 cr), Chris Morris (Rs 7.1 cr), Shreyas Iyer (Rs 7 cr) Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (Rs 17 cr), AB de Villiers (Rs 11 cr), Sarfraz Khan (1.75 cr) Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (Rs 15 cr), Suresh Raina (Rs 11 cr), Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 7 cr) Rajasthan Royals: Steve Smith (Rs 12 cr) Kings XI Punjab: Axar Patel (Rs 6.75 cr) Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner (Rs 12 cr), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Rs 8.5 cr)

The marquee players who will go under the hammer (each having a reserve price of Rs 2 crore): Ravichandran Ashwin Gautam Gambhir Shikhar Dhawan Ajinkya Rahane Harbhajan Singh Yuvraj Singh Chris Gayle Ben Stokes Kane Williamson Glenn Maxwell Joe Root Mitchell Starc Faf du Plessis Dwayne Bravo Kieron Pollard Shakib Al Hasan

The auction will start with the teams bidding for the 16 marquee players. Ashwin, Dhawan, Du Plessis, Gayle, Pollard, Rahane, Starc and Stokes will go under the hammer first. Then the next set of 8 marquee players, which include the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Gambhir, Shakib, Maxwell, Root, Harbhajan, Yuvraj and Williamson.

IPL Auction Number cruncher: 580 players 361 Indian players Minimum squad size - 18 players Maximum squad size - 25 players Maximum number of overseas players in the squad - 8 Minimum squad spend - 60 crores

Expect some aggressive bidding over New Zealand batsman Colin Munro, who caught the attention with a punishing 58-ball unbeaten 109 against India in Rajkot. He became the first batsman to hit three T20 centuries when he smashed a 47-ball hundred against West Indies at Mount Maunganui earlier this year. Expect some intense action when the name of Evin Lewis comes up too. One remembers his blistering T20I hundreds against India - 62-ball unbeaten 125 and 49-ball 100. He came close to another T20I century when he scored a 51-ball 91 against Pakistan in early 2017. Expect some tug of war also on dashing Australian batsman Chris Lynn. It was a surprise that KKR did not retain him, and now they can't even use the Right To Match card for him too, as they already have retained two overseas players in Sunil Narine and Andre Russell.

Let the biggest auction inThe History of Cricket begin 😉😉

Mediocre T20 players like Stokes making bank.

His T20 record is really poor.

Munro, Sodhi and Santner should be sought after, but this is the IPL. Nonet of them don't have a clue how to put a strong squad together.

Wouldn't surprise me if none of sell or go for pennies.

Was player of the year last year, would have gone for higher if there hadn't been a affrey charge looming over his head.

Munro is fine but Sodhi and Satner.

That's what everyone said when that htb
Guptill went unsold last year , his batting once he came as a replacement proved otherwise.

Sodhi and Santner schooled India's batsmen in the T20 WC.

Both are excellent at containing, with Sodhi capable of running through sides.

Both are top 10 in the world for a reason (Ish 1st, Santner 7 IIRC).

Meh, I'd take international performances over domestic rubbish.

Yup stokes is rubbish but then you think sodhi and santner are quality players so we can see how much you know t-20.
Sodhi is the number 1 T20 bowler in the world and Santner is 7th.

Both are infinitely better than Stokes at the international level and domestic.

They will be cannon fodder in india much like
Guptill was. One performance on a square Turner won't change that.

No unbiased expert or fan would agree with that. International t-20 rankings are a joke.

Stokes is rubbish on the international level.

Sodhi and Santner are world class in T20Is, those rankings are deserved. The only reason you think otherwise is because you don't watch them. Both are excellent containing bowlers and are more than capable of outsmarting batsmen.

I'm the harshest critic. We can rely on them to give us 8 good/great overs.

Gayle unsold. Unsold in the IPL, unsold in the PSL. Looks like his T-20 days are numbered now.

Why isn't he selling nowadays? Isn't he still scoring runs and one of the most marketable cricketer in the world?

RCB is not bidding for anyone? Whats going on? I want ABD to win an IPL. Come on! Build a good team!

The IPL trophy will not be worthy unless the Best T20 batsman of all time gets his arms around it

Easy money.

Isn't it funny how these teams pick on which country a player plays for rather than quality.

Stokes (last year) and Maxwell have done squat to justify their paydays.

Stokes avg 32 @ ST of 142 and Econ rate @ 7 with avg of 22 Last year, so they clearly seem to know what they are doing.

Gayle unsold. Unsold in the IPL, unsold in the PSL. Looks like his T-20 days are numbered now.

Do you think PSL not picking him had a role to play in IPL also not picking him? Maybe IPL doesnt want PSL rejects.

Gayle has been an IPL super star while he failed miserable in PSL. PSL's decision in justified but i am not sure about IPL. How did gayle do in last IPL?

What did Stokes do to get 2m the first time around?

His T20I record is worse than Sodhi and Santners, with bat and ball :)))

Gayle was poor in the last two seasons. Was even benched for a few games.

What has that got to do with anything, Pune paid big money for him and he proved he was worth that big money, you think he is a poor player his performances in ipl prove otherwise.

It would have been beneficial if Vettori got RCB to buy Kane.

Kane would learn a lot from Kohli and AB.

Yuvraj Singh sold at base price INR 2 crore to KXIP

I am shocked... finally IPL team have realised his worthlessness...lol.. Most laziest, underperfroming player in IPL history.

His performances on the highest level prove he's not a good T20I player, also suggests the league isn't very good when he tends to play so poorly at the highest level.

Also its funny how you don't rate the world t-20's but are parading santner and sodhi's Int T-20 record.

Punjab conned, I think they only took him because he was cheap and he;s marketable.

2 crores is too much for him. Should have remained unsold.

"Highest Level" Thats big words from someone who doesn't count T-20 WC's as actual big trophies.

Gayle was benched in last IPL. Psl has nothing to do with it. Gayle is over the hill.

Idk how fans can follow these teams, the teams seem to drastically change every year.

Hard to get invested in an evironment like that. Should be like a football where you have contracts and transfers.

I think Stokes is also quite marketable compared to Sodhi and Santner. Lot of franchise owners pushing for more marketable players too.

UV goes to KXIP. Life has come a full circle for him. Hope he finishes off on a high.

IPL follows the american system if we get a sustained no off field issue with franchises in next 5-7 years expect no of retentions to go up.

Indians buy in easily to Aussie and English players. Over pay them big time.

Australians are marketable in india, only the top english players ever get picked, except when someone does something stupid like giving millions to likes of Mills.

Not always, Root was unsold.

You also have to consider that lot of talent scouts for various franchises are from Australia, so its natural they pick lot of Aussies.

In my opinion SRH have gotten bargain buys so far.

They already have
David Warner
Bhuvan... my Man!
Williamson
Dhawan
Shakib

Ish and Santner hacks :)))

Same bowlers ran through India and Australia in India.

Your clearly have never watched them before. Both are class bowlers.

World T-20 had old used tracks that led to excessive spin for them, in IPL you won't get that at any ground except maybe SRH but even that isn't really that helpful to big spin. They will go for 50+ at banglore, mumbai and Dharmashala.

He performed well in odi series against india just before last year's auction.
He was most valuable player last season.
