Just saw the scorecard for todays match. What are the likes of Rahane, Williamson doing in THE T20 league. Also from the past few matches that I have seen the line ups have not been that good apart from RCB and even they have a very weak bowling attack. The fact that the likes of Warner, Smith, Rabada, Starc etc could not participate this year due to one reason or the other has reduced the quality even more.

It's OK to have one team of TTFs and Friends XI to make up the numbers but I think IPL would be better served if they reduced the number of teams and considered quality over quantity.

IPL will be bigger and better in the coming years Inshallah

On the contrary there should be two more teams Pune and Gujarat, the purpose is not to watch every match, but the people of that region should watch every match of theirs, it's a league and not every team can be very good, except the four making it to final round.

Ah ok, thus my question of quantity over quality. But are the fans ok with losing match after match each season due to poor quality teams or are they just OK to actually have a team. I mean watching mediocre players all the time would get boring after a while. Also would there be much loyalty to the team?

On the contrary this IPL will be the most closely fought IPL .. which means it's going to be better on all metrics..and it couldn't have asked for a better start..

You mean amongst the top few teams. Todays match was anything but closely fought.

Come on..there will be few matches here and there that could go one sided ...that happens in sport but beauty of IPL is that probability of having one sided matches is low due to all teams being evenly matched ..I expect 80-90 percent to be closely fought ones.

Yeah but still just because matches are closely fought does not mean it's quality. I mean if not for the Bravo blitz or the Rahul and ABDV assault these matches would have been one sided affairs too. You can't expect these players to perform everyday.

You would see this kind of one sided game in any tournament. Have we not seen the one sided World Cup games even with matches against two top teams. Even last CT final was one sided. Isn’t it?

Don’t have to generalize. Wait till you see more games like this. Moreover RR is not one of the top teams. Might end up last in the table.

That's precisely why the teams have star studded teams like a good international side. U mentioned Rahane but his team also has Butler, Stokes. There are atleast 3 to 4 players in each team that can win the game on their own, just like good international teams as no one player can perform in all the games.

Don't u think he knows that? He probably enjoyed the Chennai, Mumbai game and expected every game to be that way. He had hot popcorn in his hand and was sad that royals only scored 125 despite Stokes and Butler and blamed it all on Rahane.

Yes..there again lies the uniqueness of IPL..if not bravo or devilliers, they are many top players like Kohli decock Raina Watson Faf Stokes Butler Lynn short etc to play such knocks..it always happens in IPL.
Quality of league is defined by quality of players and the world's best play in IPL..look around there is no other international cricket going around at the same time as IPL as all of the are in India now.

I am not arguing with the quality of IPL but given the sole window of a couple of months and the resources available one can condense the teams to provide lesser but better quality teams.

I was on and off but I did enjoy whatever I saw in the games with Bravo and KL Rahul, (forget which teams they play for) but so far (don't know the rest of the teams or line ups) many of them apart from RCB who probably have the best top 4 atm (but a weak bowling attack) seem to have too many weak links.

That's the idea of capped salaries. No one team can have everything. Hence the auctions are a big deal so that teams choose wisely. SRH has a good bowling unit and a weaker batting line up. RCB has a killer batting line up with weaker pace bowling. Mumbai is weak on spinners and Chennai is weaker on pacers. The pitches in Chennai, delhi are slow and take turn. Kolkata and Hyderabad offer pace. The teams and pitches are as diverse as India with strong local loyalty. Makes great viewing as any team can beat the other. Add to that the Crazy supporters in the stadium and online, Glitz of Bollywood and no other cricket elsewhere.

When Joe Root doesn't have a buyer , you should know that they need more teams. A lot of current international players along with retired ones can't find a spot. India is huge and they can actually afford a couple more teams in IPL

I personally think that Root is much better than Vijay, Rahane etc, hell even Williamson but probably could not make it due to the foreign players quota or some bad planning during the auctions.

I get your point but unfortunately there might be couple more teams added to IPL in the next couple of years..there is pressure on BCCI to approve teams from Kerala and Gujarat as they are willing to pay in excess of 300 million dollars each to BCCI to own a team...Kerala is the only South Indian state to not have an IPL team and Gujarat is also one of India's richest and advanced states..so they are lobbying hard...
I personally feel just one more team can be added..it could have all players missing out currently like...Smith Warner starc root amla Mathews kedar rabada kusal perera santner Coulter nile etc...If Pakistan players are included there could easily be 10 teams..

Vijay and Rahane are Indian players. Rahane actually has a good record in IPL and suits their style of play with an anchor role. If teams don't see a foreign players fitting their scheme, they won't touch a player no matter how big he is. That's why you see big money splurged on some random auusie guy and a player like root being ignored. Williamson is in the team because SRH always had a strong bowling lineup and Hyderabad always produced bowling wickets. He provides solidarity in the order if the wickets tumble on bowling pitches.

Loyalty would be there, if they retain same players, aka CSK MI SRH RCB..plus teams have to grow on their own ..over time..not buy and win.

Every league has good or bad teams.

Just look at the EPL (widely regarded as the best league in football). For every Manchester City, Manchester United, or Liverpool, you also have West Brom, Southampton, and Stoke.

So after one of the clinical bowling performances where SRH restricted a team consisting of Butler , Stokes , Short etc , here comes the new one ; " Quantity over quality".

Conveniently forgetting every league will be this way. Bravo !!

Just because bowlers are taking wickets and you have low scoring games doesn't mean one league is superior to the other. Just look at the scores of IPL in 2009 (In SA) and 2014 (UAE) and you will get the answer. The pitches in India are flat for shorter formats and any bowler bowling in these conditions is bound to get hit around. Also teams getting bowled out cheaper doesn't mean anything. RR had Buttler, Short and Stokes in their line up.

The problem is that it is neither quantity or quality.

Just a giant billboard with a few bakras falling for the myth that it is cricket.

League cricket is defined by big name players, big celebrities associated with it, and the glamour. In other words, pure entertainment. Anyone looking for quality cricket would much rather watch International cricket.

That being said, no league can come close to the quality of cricket that the IPL provides simply because the best International players play in it.

More games = more money = Does anything else matter?

Watching the match yesterday, I was awestruck with the bowling quality on show. An attack of Rashid Khan, Shakib, Bhuvi and Stanlake is probably twice as good as Pakistan's. Wouldn't you agree DeadBall?

LOL don't you get tired repeating this year after year yet rushing to all IPL threads? Folks like yourself have been talking of IPL's failure for long, while it continues to grow into a bigger and better brand. Keep trying

Edited for accuracy.

I actually feel that the IPL could accomodate two more sides, especially now that it has a separate window to itself. The only problem them becomes the length, which might be too much to handle. Keep in mind the quality of players who haven't got an IPL contract right now and it becomes clear.

Definitely. So many good players especially the foreign players are unable to get a chance right now. Maybe the mix needs to change to 6 Indian players and 5 foreign players in each side

That ways 60 Indian players and 50 foreign players will play, currently that number is 56 Indian players and 32 foreign players. It will only further improve the quality of cricket. As for more number of matches, we can always have a few more double headers.

As long as Top T20 team i.e Pakistan's players are not added , IPL can never be called the superior.FACT.
As far as quantity is concerned, why not have more teams and more matches = more money

Completely agreed. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that if BCCI had been a bit smarter, they could have made the IPL literally the only cricket league that would even matter. Add two more teams, make it 6/5 instead of 7/4 in the player mix, un-ban Pakistanis, and more importantly share a tiny piece of the pie.

Now the last thing might sound ridiculous but hear me out. Even a tiny piece of the IPL pie (10% is around 250mil) would have been wonderful money going into the joint sharing pool. And that could be use to establish the IPL's preeminence complete; it's a small price to pay for quasi-monopoly. You wouldn't have had the PSL, the Global T20, the new SPL or whatever if all the boards had something to gain from the IPL apart from the players. And that would just have pushed the brand value up even more as it would have guaranteed that the Pakistani, Sri Lankan, South African markets would practically be captive markets for you in terms of television rights.

It's all anathema for some people, as it involves the IPL actually recognizing that foreign players are what makes it so special, and the importance of other countries. But if the IPL had been a bit more magnanimous, they would have won hearts, and won pockets even more in a truly permanent way.

They did try revensue sharing of sorts with the CLT20 which was commercially a complete disaster from day 1. There is not enough appetite for two T20 leagues in India yet.

For longer league, again BCCI tried having 10 teams in 2011 but that led to to many issues - financial irregularity and mismanagement due to the power struggle within BCCI. But now with a more professional setup running BCCI, I am sure it will consider a 10 team league. Star Sports will back such a move as well.

And a few problems also...

Protesters burned merchandise and jostled with police outside a cricket stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, demanding Indian Premier League matches be cancelled as the southern city reels from a water crisis.

Hundreds of demonstrators, some wearing black t-shirts and waving black balloons, gathered near the venue shouting slogans before Chennai Super Kings' match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Police tried to force protesters on to buses outside the stadium in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

The drought-prone state has witnessed mounting protests in recent weeks over a disputed accord with neighbouring Karnataka on how to share water from the key Cauvery river, a hot-button issue in southern India.

“We want all seven IPL matches in Chennai to be cancelled until our demands are met. We will also ask the spectators to boycott the match,” said one protester sporting a black T-shirt.

The state government had recommended IPL games be moved out of Chennai because of the protests but said they would provide security if they went ahead.

“Around 4,000 police personnel will stand guard around the ground. We have covered all bases to make sure that nothing goes wrong,” a Tamil Nadu police spokesman told AFP.

The Chennai stadium is scheduled to host the IPL matches between April 10 and May 20.

The Super Kings have also told the sellout crowd that they will not be allowed to take mobile phones, bags or other electronic devices into the ground.

Some state politicians and activists have lashed out at the Board of Control for Cricket in India for holding IPL matches in the state at a time when sentiments were running high.

Tamil cinema superstar Rajinikanth has also weighed in on the controversy, urging fans to support the protesters.

“If they (organisers) don't cancel the matches, at least they should allow players and spectators to wear black badges,” he said.

This should be easier than moving the matches. :genius
