Is IPL getting boring and losing its charm?

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar launched a scathing attack regarding the availability of overseas players in the Indian Premier League (IPL), questioning both their commitment and their fitness claims. While players like Mitchell Starc and Matheesha Pathirana have faced delayed starts due to injury concerns, Kolkata Knight Riders' record signing Mitchell Starc and RCB's Cameron Green have faced scrutiny over workload management. Gavaskar urged the BCCI to intervene, suggesting that stricter rules should be in place for players who do not commit fully to their designated roles. In his column for Sportstar, the legendary cricketer remarked that bowling four overs a match can hardly be called "demanding."

"To suggest that the franchise was 'informed before' is not a great excuse. And 'informed before' is how much before the opening day of the tournament? Playing for the country is paramount and comes before franchise cricket, but don't the franchises-who open not just their wallets but also their hearts to players and often their families-deserve full commitment?"

"It is also worth remembering that a bowler can bowl only four overs in a match. If they have bowled a similar number of deliveries in practice without issue, what is stopping them from doing so in the game? As a bowler, you are expected to bowl 56 overs across 14 league games over two months and, if your team reaches the final, perhaps another two or three games and 12 more overs. C'mon, for a generation that keeps talking about how fit they are, that's no load at all. Four overs in a match-and not even in one stretch-is too much for the body? Man, if the body is that fragile, then it's best to give it two more months' rest, isn't it?" he wrote.

While Cricket Australia previously instructed its players to manage their workloads, Gavaskar remained unconvinced. He argued that foreign boards benefit financially from IPL contracts and insisted that cricketers should show more accountability, considering the significant investment made by franchises.

"The IPL has been a cash cow not just for overseas players but for their Boards too. Does the average Indian fan know that Cricket Boards get 10% of the fee a player from their country is bought for? It is not clear whether the BCCI or the franchise pays this commission for issuing the No Objection Certificate."

"No other T20 league in the world pays a single dime to the Boards of overseas players. Not even The Hundred. Since four out of six teams [in other global leagues] have Indian owners, why not milk the cash cow?" he added.

Yes senior cricket where India have mauled Pakistan 4 consecutive years with not a single defeat.

If you think the overall record of 88-82 or whatever it is on the back of dinosaur era wins in useless bilaterals make up for the abject humiliation that Pakistan are currently through, then you guys will keep getting thrashed due to your minnow complex.

And lol at 25 year old Suryavanshi...he's an U19 WC champ. Have some respect...your age fudging uncle's will do good to tie his shoelaces.
Useless bilaterals according to whom? No Pak-Ind match was ever useless. Revisionism from little Inds who cannot accept our historical superiority. Even the 88-81 looks closer than it is because of Ind lead in T20. In the 2 premier formats, the gap is much much bigger 85-67 or something like that. Pak also lead in finals. You will never bridge that gap so you find new ways to cope.
So now U19 matters again after crying about senior cricket? He got owned in the final against us by the way.

IPL is best league and people's are enjoying the biggest cricketing carnival in the World.

Yes padosi are getting hurting after seeing IPL success where matches are happening with jam packed stadium.

While in PSL crowds are not allowed die to security theat .lol

:klopp :kp

Yeah I'm pretty sure you remember everything from the 3rd useless ODI in the useless Coca cola cup of 1995 without looking at the cricinfo scorecard.

Definitely a very very important game that is remembered by everyone. :yk

It's not even about the crowds.

The quality of cricket is abysmal. Just saw a clip yesterday where Old man Peter Siddle was shell shocked after a couple of Pakistani fielders made a meme out of themselves as usual and let out a hilarious overthrow.

It honestly gives second hand embarrassment.

There is a shift happening in IPL without people noticing, this is the probably the first season in IPL where there is a lot of talk around teams rather than Dhonis, Kohlis & Rohits, they are just quietly parts of their teams & doing their jobs.

IPL is not an aberration anymore, it's a permanent fixture in the sporting calendar that people will watch & have a strong loyalty towards.

Fan bases, which used to thrive in the name of Rohitians, Viratians & Thalasons, will soon be replaced by proper team fans, who will want the best for the team, above anything else.

The sporting hatred towards rival franchises was always there but it will only grow, the modern day cricket fan won't worship your idols, even if it is Sachin Tendulkar, and their entire affinity will be to RCB, CSK, KKR or MI.

As soon as franchises realise the concept of Home & Away jerseys, including fan groups & there are proper Fan TV channels, over the next few years, IPL will be unstoppable.

IPL is magic, unlike any other thing cricket has seen, it's a cricketing revolution.

SOme are still stuck with soda bottle cap era? lol Once the cameras were instilled and neutral umpires were instilled things started looking very different. There is a reason why they got pounding in multi nationals like World cups. Benson & Hedges championship. Even now they are doing this in their own league :)
