'I always wear colourful clothes - now I don't': Iranians tell BBC about fear of security checkpoint searches

Iranians in the country's capital have been telling the BBC about the security checkpoints around the city, where many people are being stopped and searched.

One man in his twenties, who has been providing internet access amid the blackout in the country, tells the BBC of his fear while passing through one in a taxi.

"What I do as a job is considered a crime in Islamic Republic," he explains. "I was really worried, because I had my laptop and phone with me."

"They had stopped cars. But luckily, they didn't search the car that I was in," he says.

Another man, also in his twenties, lays out his strategy for getting through a checkpoint: "I started saying things like 'thanks for your hard work' and that sort of thing.. as if they were genuinely putting in a lot of effort and I appreciated it."

The authorities let him go afterwards.

"I always wear colourful clothes. But now I don’t," says a woman, also in her twenties. "I’m afraid of their patrols, worried that if I wear something too bright it might annoy them."

Effie Defrin, a spokesperson for the Israeli military, has given a televised briefing.

During it, he says the Israeli military still has "thousands" of targets to hit in Iran.

Defrin's quoted by Reuters news agency as saying: "We are identifying new targets every day."

Further translation from Reuters cites him as saying the Israeli military will "continue to strike in Iran and against Hezbollah until we remove the threats and achieve the objectives of the operation".

I am hearing the same reports from the same sources that Iran has almost run out of missile launchers, yet they are still firing missiles. .

Both Turkiye and Saudi have now independently investigated the origin source of projectiles that landed into their territory. Both have concluded that they came from Iran. Iran’s central govt and armed forces have denied their role in this. IRGC has not. You can see where the problem lies.

It is similar to Pakistan, the Pakistani government can say anything but the statement of the Pakistani military establishment is more important because they have ruled the country, not the government.

Religion has very little importance in my life. I am not Hinduvta..I hate people who use religion to hurt others...I don't agree with rss bajrang dal etc but I also know that they are not equivalent to what Islamic terrorists do. I am anti religion and that includes all religion...I am spiritual and couldn't care less about religion. That makes Islam not congruent with me because religion is central to most Muslims. Anyhow I know most Iranians don't think positively about India but I am impartial to them...and treat them as an individual. I do know that India has a good working relationship with them and then never harmed India. So I have no ill will towards them. Israel and Iran are rivals and Iran started this by sponsoring Hamas and hezbollah. Now Israel hit back hard and started a war that was not needed. On that I agree with you and on the same page.
But Israel is an ally of India. Irrespective of religion I know that when times are tough..Israel will stand beside India. Iran will be neutral. So India should be neutral but if there is assistance needed non militarily that would be provided by India.

As President Donald Trump continues to urge countries to assist with the escalating crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, he reportedly issued a warning to NATO on Sunday, saying it will be “very bad” for the global alliance if they do not respond or comply.

“If there’s no response or if it’s a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO,” he reportedly told the Financial Times in a phone interview.

The president has spent the weekend insisting that because other countries, particularly Europe and China, are dependent on the oil that flows through the Strait, they should be responsible for assisting with the escalating oil crisis.

“It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the Strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there,” Trump said.

The president also floated postponing his trip to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which a White House official previously told ABC is currently scheduled for March 31 to April 2. He did not say how long he may delay the trip.

Trump told the FT that he would “like to know” if China would help with unblocking the Strait of Hormuz before the summit takes place.

The minister highlighted the recent passage of two Indian-flagged vessels, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, as a practical success of this diplomatic strategy.

The tankers, carrying approximately 92,712 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), are currently en route to the Indian ports of Mundra and Kandla.

NATO has traditionally been an extension of US foreign policy and worked hand in hand in almost all areas. US interests were in most cases the interests of all the NATO countries.

Trump created an unnecessary wedge, for no real reason, openly taunted and threatened his allies and went over and above them to try and please Russia, the very country that NATO was set up to engage with!

Now he's realising the importance of the alliance to the Americans!

This is now a war of attrition.

Its about who can cause maximum financial damage to the other party and what's their limit to sustain it.

US is burning billions of dollars worth of weapons right now.
